I've created and updated my Moonlight Raspberry Pi Steam Stream Script here ua-cam.com/video/xK5Nqsl6R1Q/v-deo.html. This script will completely setup Moonlight in Retropie with ease! The video will run through how the script works too. Lastly, I've also just added an option to update the script to the latest version for new options! How awesome is that! It is the first video of yours i watched and what i liked about your video is 1:- Straight Forward 2:- Your Tone 3:- Your Presentation 4:- Your Beard ^_^ Subscribed !
It's always fun and interesting to see how people view themselves versus how others view them. If you paid attention to the narrator and his image on the t-shirt, you'll notice he doesn't quite look like the physically fit smiling charmer on the shirt. He looks more like a guy who spends a lot of time eating biscuits in front of the Pi3 emulator he's set up. In fact, I bet if the dude fell down and got a cut he would bleed sausage gravy all over the place.
It's always funny how people perceive others. Writing comments like they have some insight into the human psyche. Hi, My name is Jonathan and I'm the biscuit eating gravy bleeding narrator :) I have an auto immune disease called sarcoidosis which in my particular case is all through my body like cancer. In fact, they thought I had cancer and told me I was going to die. My wife started helping plan for my funeral. 5 years later and I'm still kicking. The pain I experience ranges for stabbing pains in lungs and liver through to cramping in my hands and feet like arthritis. And just so you know, this is me a few weeks ago ua-cam.com/users/edit?o=U&video_id=Yx2cGGamY2Q You will notice I'm the thinner smiling person I imagined I was on my shirt.
Liked and subscribed because I am so stoked this actually can work. Thanks. Loving this lil RPi3 more and more each day.. Time to 'quad-boot' Rasbian, Retropie, Kodi and Moonlight/Steam ;) :D
Did you try the 60fps setting?, I'm interested in knowing if the Raspberry Pi 3 can handle 60fps streams as the Odroid c2 can handle a 60fps stream supposedly.
Hey man, glad to see the videos are coming up regularly. You might want to adjust your white balance/tone in post a little. You're coming off a little green in the last couple of videos and look like you're coming down with something lol. Keep em up.
The RPI 3 decoding hardware is only capable of decoding a video stream with a resolution of 1080p at around 30 fps. The ODROID C2 might be a better option. It is capable to decode a video stream at a resolution of 4k at around 60 fps.
Moonlight is the software for the Raspberry Pi that allows communication between Steam and the Pi. You wouldn't need moonlight if you were on another PC though :)
This is a bit late and you probably already found the answer. One easy way is to run "moonlight map xbox360.map" and then press the requested buttons on the controller. After that's done you run "moonlight stream -mapping xbox360.map [ip]"
thankyou so mucho for this! ive been hours looking for the solution to the mapping problem on my 360 wireless controller on steam. you are a live savior! :D
im stuck... I got moonligjt installed on librelec.. And I cant seem to find where to remap the xbox 360 controller, any suggestions? eceeything is all screwed up...
It's been a while since I've done this from scratch, but I had a quick look through my notes and had written down the following command. moonlight map xbox.map Not sure if this will work or not. I will look further into it later in the week.
It's all about the software. Steam has the technology built into their SteamOS on the SteamLink. I'm working on a new video that has this working for an AMD card. Hoping it will be done in 1 to 3 videos time :)
Mitch McCann TechWizTime is talking rubbish. It's not about the SteamOS, it's about the Host (PC). Moonlight does use a videostseam that is encoded from a NVIDIA GPU on the PC using NVIDIA's gamestream streaming API and provided for the client on the Network by a software that is from NVIDIA. Steam link does use a different technology. I am not exactly sure which one but there are several options. Option 1: It does encode it in software,. Option 2: It does make use of NVidia's and AMD's encoding hardware but the software that is providing it for clients on the Network is from Valve, not from NVIDIA.
Very nice video mate. Found you when I was looking thru who subscribed to my channel and thought I would check you out. I do want to point out tho that the raspberry pi 3 you linked to in the description is the same price as the steam link. If you have other projects you want to do for the same amount of money then raspberry pi 3 is definitely the way to do, but most end users aren't going to fiddle around with it like we do and probably just want to get the steam link instead. Just my 2 cents.
+Jeff Savage Just to add to the TechWiz reply.. there would be many people out there that already have a Raspberry Pi 3 for other purposes that can stream their steam games without an additional purchase that they probably wouldn't make. And on the other side of the coin.. if you were to purchase the RPi3 for this purpose it would allow for countless alternative uses (Retro gaming, free online streaming, mini pc etc) :]
How much GB needed ? An 8GB micro SD is suffisant ? And is that possible to stream steam without connect a mouse to the Raspberry (except the first installation) ?
If you wrote a script to automatically start moonlight when the OS launching then you should be able to get away with just using a Xbox360 controller. An 8gb SD Card should be okay if you manually install the OS.
DaiShuryo Technus Yes, you can buy a Steam Link from Steam. It isn't dependent on a NVIDIA GPU. At the moment it's summer sale on the steam platform and the Steam Link is available for a bargain.
Just got my Raspberry Pi 3 yesterday, still haven't unboxed it yet though, I've got too much to do for now unfortunately! I'm waiting for a case, power supply and a good fast micro sd
+TechWiz Thanks! Can't wait to see it. I'll subscribe to your channel so that I get notified.. Extra info: I am running 1080p @60fps on my RP2 with overclocked gpu (core_freq=450 and h264_freq=420).. This makes it possible, but it is a tiny little bit delay.. I'm hoping the RP3 can do this out of the box.
I'm not very good with the command line as I'm quite new to Linux. The Rasberry Pi 3 I purchased is my first attempt at it. I've installed the latest version of Raspbian and I've got Kodi up and running as well as moonlight. However my controller button mappings are incorrect. Could you give me some pointers on where to find a way to fix this mapping issue? Although I am not very good at the command line I hope the site makes it quite clear on what to do. Help would be appreciated. Can I run two controllers off the system without issues?
I'm planning some Raspberry Pi videos on my return from Japan which will include some controller mappings. I can't promise when, but they will be in the works :)
I'd just like to mention that after the latest Raspbian update and controller update I didn't need to remap everything. That problem has been resolved, and I have to admit, Nvidia game streaming along with moonlight on my setup, has hardly ANY texture compression that I can see. Beter than steam streaming. As well as being fast and responsive. I'm VERY pleased with the current setup. The only thing not working is the controller rumble feature. But it's not an issue for me, I'll just have better battery life in my controllers.
OK, HOW did you get the Pi to connect to the Nvidea card? HDMI cable? Otherwise veered cooooool. Oh, I dig your Fallout lunch box. Keep up the great stuff - digging' the variety. Thanks for sharing...
Nice video! Something I think many people are wondering right now is how well does Rpi3 emulate n64/psx compared to Rpi2? If you have the time to test I think the view count will be interesting for that video! I've now subscribed =)
+nicoful86 I have messed with this quite a bit. N64 games are hit or miss. docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1Sn3Ks3Xv8cIx3-LGCozVFF7wGLagpVG0csWybnwFHXk/edit#gid=282207345 This is a pretty comprehensive list that will say which games work. Also best to use a wired controller or an external bluetooth adapter, the built in bluetooth causes crashing in emulationstation.
I wouldn't recommend it for games that require precision timing as there is a few millisecond lag but everything else is perfectly fine, I played bioshock infinite though without problem
haha i was an idiot for some reason i thought it was you playing the game from hardware not from streaming so i was confused about how you were able to play such an intensive game on a ras pie.

Great Video! correct me if i'm wrong but i think you need a 650 and above to be able to stream with moon light?
Did you try the 60fps setting?, I'm interested in knowing if the Raspberry Pi 3 can handle 60fps streams as the Odroid c2 can handle a 60fps stream supposedly.
It could, just need good wifi. tested myself on the pi 2.
It can't. The video decoder is not capable to decode at 1080p@60 fps.
Hey man, glad to see the videos are coming up regularly. You might want to adjust your white balance/tone in post a little. You're coming off a little green in the last couple of videos and look like you're coming down with something lol. Keep em up.
You said you tried running it at a caped 30fps, did you ever try higher than that? Because I'd be all on board to get one if it could handle 60.
+TechWiz how did it turn out?
+TechWiz I'd like to know too. I have a pi 3 and I've been looking into trying streaming games to a tv with it.
+TechWiz How did it end up?/
The RPI 3 decoding hardware is only capable of decoding a video stream with a resolution of 1080p at around 30 fps. The ODROID C2 might be a better option. It is capable to decode a video stream at a resolution of 4k at around 60 fps.
Do I need to stream it onto a Tv can't I just play the games like any other gaming PC with a mouse and keyboard in my room
Thank you for this video. I can't wait to get a the new Pi 3. I missed the first batch rollout.
question. why would you need moonlight, if Steam already has built in streaming? is it more efficient, etc?
Moonlight is the software for the Raspberry Pi that allows communication between Steam and the Pi. You wouldn't need moonlight if you were on another PC though :)
Very nice video quality congratulations my friend ^^ i'm lovin' your channel, good setup, good speaking, Well Done !!!
So does moon light act like OBS or xsplit ? For streaming or is it different
Just wandering, since the Raspberry Pi 3 now has a x64 processor, does that mean that you could run the steam client on it?
Do you have the info about remapping keys for the 360 controller? TIA
This is a bit late and you probably already found the answer. One easy way is to run "moonlight map xbox360.map" and then press the requested buttons on the controller. After that's done you run "moonlight stream -mapping xbox360.map [ip]"

Are you going to be doing a full tutorial for this anytime soon?
Hi, have you found a way of remapping the Xbox controller? my dpad is going up/down instead of left right.
I have the same issue. Were you able to resolve this issue? could you point me to a link?
Yes, I posted it on my blog ctran.co.uk under the "triple boot entertainment pi" post
heres where I get confused. A steam link uses an ARM CPU and can have games streamed without a specific GPU so why can't the pi?
It's all about the software. Steam has the technology built into their SteamOS on the SteamLink. I'm working on a new video that has this working for an AMD card. Hoping it will be done in 1 to 3 videos time :)

subscribed for hopefully the upcoming psx and n64 games Retropie video , Please test wave rider and Mario tennis as those suck on pi2
So I need to have Steam and a pc that handle the game beforehand?
correct
What if you have an amd video card?
Unfortunately an AMD card isn't compatible with Moonlight.
Is there an alternative for AMD Card Users?
Also I'm looking for
parsec.tv/ is an alternate for AMD users.

What's the point streaming a game if it's wired, then?
hi how much Gb does raspberry pi 3 have? can i play games on steam? like dota 2
You can stream any game to the Raspberry Pi 3 through Moonlight. You won't be able to run them natively though (meaning without streaming).

Great! I was waiting for this review for a few weeks. But is it capable 1080p on 60fps?
yes
Fuck, i have AMD :'(
F***, it's moonlight. My graphics card is not strong enough.
Fuck my Wi-Fi sucks

What does it mean by stream? I'm confused.
+Cap'n Stingray Gameplay Stream Games from Your PC to your Raspberry Pi 3
Is there any way to 1080 60fps???
I'm streaming at 1080p 60fps 10000k bitrate no problem
Really? How? I only can stream at 30fps and have a great pc and internet :S
Its got nothing to do with your internet connection. It's got everything to do with your network speeds between your pc and pi
funk44 u mean LAN Speed?
yes
so with an AMD grapichs card i can t stream with moonlight...so sad :(
It sucks I know. But who knows what will happen in the future.....
What's the latency like?
I wouldn't recommend it for games that require precision timing as there is a few millisecond lag but everything else is perfectly fine, I played bioshock infinite though without problem
Moonlight works fine on Raspberry Pi 2, skips are very rare. 720p @ 60FPS or 1080p @ 30FPS.
Good to know. I skipped the Pi 2 and just own the B+ and the Pi 3 now :)
nice won !!! my 100 pi project :D
haha i was an idiot for some reason i thought it was you playing the game from hardware not from streaming so i was confused about how you were able to play such an intensive game on a ras pie.

Awesome man
There seems to be too much green in your video. Makes you look super pale and sickly.
For people with AMD cards, use Remotr or Splashtop. Work almost as good.

cool video saddly there isnt an app for linux to linux streaming :/

btw you can get a 64GB off amazon for $20 usd lol
This video was made soooooo long ago. Prices are falling everyday. In 5 years time, you will be able to get a 512GB Micro SD card for $20 :)
haha im just letting you know i got 2 32gb for 10 each on amazon for my pi :D
Jeez you've lost a lot of weight. Congratulations.
do you know what hands on is? not even a tutorial

I'll have to test that out :)
