While the video was well done I think you made a big mistake choosing the 3B over the 3 B + which has dual band 802.11 AC wifi, especially when the 3b + is only a little bit more than the 3b.

    • @dduncane

This was a really strange choice, yeah. There is pretty much no reason to EVER purchase a Pi 3B instead of the B+ at this point, its just that much better. I can confirm that the B+ works great over wifi on the B+, using the 5Ghz band.

You get a significantly better performance out of the B+ which has ac wifi. Also, from my experience with the B+, your stuttering may be due to the way WiFi networks are managed on the Pi, mine were alleviated when I connect using the network BSSID instead of just the SSID.
2.4 GHz is unplayable, B+ would have been a better comparison despite the higher price.

I've been experimenting with the Steam Link app on android and find a lot of the same issues you do, which I put down to my LG K10 not exactly being top of the line. I also tried sideloading the Steam Link app onto my Amazon Fire Stick and while it would work, load games and run them, I was getting that same low-fidelity sense. Why is routing through the USB limit the speed to 35mbits per second? USB speeds are more like 20+ Mbytes/s not mbits...

    • @JeordieEH
      @JeordieEH 5 років тому +1

Well as a usb 2.0 bus consists of 480 Mbit/s, which is roughly 60 Mbytes. Given that it is a serial connection where the upstream and downstream are both shared, the range of 35-40 Mbyte/s is a fairly accurate speed range if the upstream isn't being equally saturated. As for the video he most likely misspoke as people don't give a lot of thought when using those terms quickly to describe something. So good catch.

Great video man - shows that what Valve did was something a little 'more' than your average streamer device. The Steam Controller and Steam Link are the two most incredible pieces of hardware to come out of Valve. Seriously - the SL opened up my entire library for playing with friends and out in the living room, and that is really something! The controller was/is an inventive design (takes a bit of time to get used to) - but that gyro and touchpad combo is a knock-out punch really.
Also, most surprising, playing Rocket League and now Mortal Kombat 11 on the Link are incredibly responsive. Kinda wild/sad that they are discontinuing it.

Also, another point you didn’t mention is that the steam link allows you to stream any game and do basically anything on your PC, not just play games on steam. You can just minimize steam and use your computer like normal, which is great.

    Enjoyed this!
Any (steam) controller testing? I used my steam link to stream from my wired (over powerline adapter) to my wireless steam link and it was a bad experience. Wiring the steam link helped notably.

Does it upscale to 2k or 4K? I still have a steam link but I don’t ever play it. Lol :(

Hey can you make an update when using an 802.11ac dongle on the raspi ?

What about the 2B? I could probably use that over wired and a heat sync to keep it cool.

If you have an ethernet connection anything newer than the Raspberry Pi 2 will work amazing with moonlight-embedded and dualshock controllers.

I just wish you had tried to actually measure the input delay. The info in the bottom left corner only tells half the picture.

So I bought 2 steam links and love them. I have a Pi 3b and mainly use it as a retro pi machine with 2 Wiiu Pro controllers.

man the steam link was the best device that steam ever made!!!! I got 2, one for the regular price when it released and the other on sale when they were discontinuing it.

I was thinking of making a streaming machine from a B+ as I have one lying around. I'm flying across the country in a few months and not taking my desktop, so a Pi would be perfect while at my friend's, I'm just worried about the latency from their house, to my house and back to her.

Steam Home Streaming only works inside the same network, IIRC.

Do you experience crackling sound on the steam link after some playtime, for example 20 minutes? Mine does every time. Quiting the stream and then continue the stream gets back to good sound for again 20-30 minutes. Wondering if this due to my host pc being linux or not. Does the Pi have the same issue? Note that dolby surround streaming with steam link doesn't work with linux due to bugs in steam.

I don't use my Steam link as much as I'd like to, I got it cheap on sale and I run it wired but the pc it connects to is wireless and is pretty old so while it works the delay is a bit annoying for me

the latency when I use steam in home streaming is so bad it's unplayable. Could it be that my router is just terrible?

I bought the steam link, I for the life of me, I can not get the steam link to work. It finds my PC, they are both connected to the same network, but it just will not connect to my pc.

Yes you can. All you do is get a micro USB cable and plug it into the front of the controller and hook it up to your computer

I use my link to play fighting games on the TV. Feels more natural playing with a fight stick than sat at my desktop somehow. I'm not the greatest player and probably wouldn't notice frame differences pros would, but I've also found the lag minimal and not a problem. Just a tip to anyone in the UK, get your steam link from CeX @ £15 instead of paying the inflated ebay prices.

Try it with the raspberry pi 3b+. It has 5ghz WiFi and around 300m/bit lan support

Being in Canada the steamlink was never available for anywhere near as cheap as in the States. I know they were selling for like less then $5 with free shipping down there, while being like $30 up here. So I have this running on a Pi3 B+, which does have 5ghz Wifi, tho I was unimpressed by the wifi performance (I blame my home network and not the Pi for this). I haven't had a chance to get back to it over Ethernet, but I think i just might do that this weekend. Great video, as always!

I actually ended up buying a Steam Link off of eBay for $30 to put in my room with my TV. I know that the Steam Link went on sale for as low as a dollar before, but it was saving me a whole lot more money than buying a Raspberry Pi with a case, microSD card, and whatever else I needed.
I have zero regrets buying the Steam Link. I use it very frequently and actually stream my laptop to the Steam Link. Even though both the laptop and Steam Link are not on Ethernet, there's no noticeable lag. this is with 60 down/10 up Mbps internet.
So yeah, no regrets buying it off eBay for $30, and I'd honestly suggest others to do the same if they're interested in it.
