In the years following the English conquest of Jamaica in 1655, the island was divided into military-controlled areas rather than parishes. The English, still unsure of how to handle the vast land they had acquired, created a system of regimental plantations where soldiers were given authority over key territories. These plantations weren’t just about cultivating crops; they were designed to impose control over the enslaved Africans who were rapidly becoming the backbone of Jamaica's economy. The soldiers were responsible for ensuring the productivity of the land, but also for maintaining order-an early form of systemic control that was necessary to manage a growing enslaved population.
