What is EIFS Stucco and How It's SUPPOSED to Work
Вставка
- Опубліковано 30 вер 2018
- Contrary to popular belief, stucco isn't there just to look good. I demonstrate the most important feature of an EIFS stucco system, and that is NO mechanical fastener's. The exterior finish has the ability to let water in but most importantly to let it back out. When done properly this stucco system will extend the life of your building and keep the building envelope properly intact for many many years. It also adds R-value and at the end it still looks fantastic, just don't forget...it also has to function.

“Up To Kod” Love it! Good video. Thanks
Great content 👍. Thanks.
Great video as you show the water running behind the eps...congrats.. (the problem é over)
Great video I like the way you explained... about this system it work in areas like Florida where earthquake or storm hit your house it will keep the foam stick to the walls?? Any advise
Use Insulated Concrete Forms for the exterior walls and you do not have to worry about water penetrating from outside. When you build with wood frame then the water is caused by humidity dropping water as it hits against the waterproof styrofoam.
Hi is this video of plastering in Canada. I'm very interested in plastering technologies. I'm from the UK and want to immigrate to Canada just wondering if the products are similar or totally different.
Hello, I'm doing much research on Stucco for new house build this year. I like this video, but where is the next one showing the steps to this point, and after this stage?
I don’t have any further videos on this system. Sorry. Not at this time at least
What’s gold coat made of? Is it acrylic?
A video on how to retrofit a vent through EIFS would be greatly appreciated.
(Hello, I am Chilean and I work in the Eifs system for 10 years in my country and I will travel to the angels in a few days, you will have some contact to make eifs I would thank you very much, the bad thing that I do not handle with English but I am very fast and retailer).
This video taught me efis is what happens when you share your water bottle with the side of a building but it isn’t thirsty
My neighbor recently redid the exterior of their home. I asked him what it's called and he said, "EIF." Of course, I didn't know what that is, ❓so I searched online and that brought me here; thanks for the information.
Thanks for taking the time to comment and share!
Where can I find all this stuff I have been looking online and I can’t find what your using
I also have bad service at my house so that makes it harder
It sounds funny but in my area it’s usually the drywall suppliers that sell stucco. For example, consolidated gypsum, Kenroc, shoemaker. I doubt these are global companies. Or check a concrete store that sells concrete tools, etc.
If the roofers did thier job properly and installed kickers the right way building wrap does fine. Always check the kickers are in place
Can you explain what are ‘kickers’?
Yes it's a good system..I've done the sto system since it came to canada from Germany via Atlanta...we also do the pucks system behind the eifs foam which is the best drainage plane yet .......regardless every good ... system out there now is geared to drain quality in stucco since 1904 in western Canada and the usa
I still love the EIFS system and did it on my folks place. But it has to be done correctly and some guys are slow to catch up on the times. It’s the best way to add insulation to a wood frame building with minimal effort and overall cost.
Great video and you make it nice and easy for clients to grasp ..I've done all the systems n Sto eifs is my favorite ..I've done the pucs system on Vancouver island where yr surrounded by ocean n salt water ..we did like a sto/pucs combo system and actual used a panzer mesh in many areas for strength ..plus because it's a 4 million $$ home n my nephews we did 3 complete extra tight levels of basecoat and I had the walls as tight as a nun ...straighter that straight too ..the finish was flawless ..no waving at you even in sunlight ..but lots of effort ..most people wouldnt pay the 20$ per square foot price ...but this guy wrote the book on anal !!!n he grew up workin for me n my brothers ...had to be done ....
Great work! Sounds like you take pride in not only the finished product but also the water proofing which is the most important
@@uptokode thx kody ..yes we try ..take care n get er done ..all the best ..from your canadian friends in stucco n the home of the winnipeg jets !!!
Can it stop projectiles in a category 4 tornado?
I’m going to say No on that one. In that case we do ICF construction which we specialize in
Can you?
You my man know your shit. Eifs is good system well done good shit heavy mesh for home is well recommended
Would this protect a building against leaking parapet or cap?
Not much will protect against a leaking parapet or a cap since the water will most likely be getting behind everything and inside the wall cavity.
@@uptokode I have a parapet that's capped with Spanish tile that was nailed. I'm pretty sure every single nail hole is allowing water behind the stucco. And the painters clogged all the drip caps, etc
How is this foam stuck to the house? Just glued???
Yes it’s bonded with a special mortar mix with polymers
No mechanical fasteners which is very unique system.
do you need a stucco specialist?
great explanation of the system. doesn't the drainage layer defeat the purpose of the insulation? Isn't it like water cooling the face of the waterproofing layer?
This is American EIFS . American democracy is above all including laws of physics
Hahahaha.
just got a quote 1/11/2022 for Sto system
EPS foam is about 30 cents a square foot
23 cents mesh per squre foot hd IS 10 CENTS
41 cents turbo stick foam adhesive
36 cents base coat in bags
50 cents final top coat finish.
$1.80 total per square foot
but above price does not include the gold water/air barrier coat.
Materials are relatively inexpensive. Labour is a big portion as it’s multiple steps. You doing the job yourself?
@@uptokode gonna try, first time doing it . will make a 6x8x8' well house with eps blocks and coat it to get some practice.
if it works out will do larger building latter on
In the 90's, using a notched trowel, our polymer cement was applied vertical to allow any moisture to run out the bottom. Times change, methods, products change.
It's been said the Apollo 11 had roughy the same computing power as a hand held "Texas Instrument" calculator. Imagine that. As pilots, they wanted control and the ability to fly it. I think they where.
Question; Woodpeckers have migrated East away from smoke from Western fires. They have damaged homes & businesses by 3" (75mm) holes in structures. It's alway easier to make the patch fit the hole. Using tape, a multipurpose oscillating saw plus a 1" (25.4mm) fine tooth saw blade, Control the depth to place an EFIS grade 1" thick patch into a precut hole. Air files with different grit can taper out the edges of the field to allow a tight fit 1/8" below finish. With a mesh dried, fit tight, should a primer be used? Ultra Kote pulled out of our NE. market so needing a qt. leaves the internet and searches can't give any clues.
Thanks. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated. Omaha.
All I ever see is the cold crack it apart in a few years and one hail storm beat craters so deep you can almost see what the foam is attached to.
There is definitely more than one company that offers a troweled on air barrier with glued on styrofoam. Dryvit/adex/parex/synergy.... I’d be interested in seeing the final product.
Psst stagger your foam on outside corners.
How do you mean staggering on the corners?
stagger the whole wall alot stronger and durable
Fair enough.
Durock is Ontario Manufactured and was the first with the puccs system
Why is the soffit on already
So birds don’t start living in my attic! Haha. I pre-foamed above my soffit with a graphite infused foam (had it left over from a different job). That’s why it’s different color. But don’t worry with goldcoat and foam go right to the top of the wall.
I ask because plastering around soffit is a pain in the ass. And it should be installed after the fact
Whoa whoa whoa you're saying the building paper doesn't work?
No I’m not. Building paper is still vital in many applications. I think the biggest point is that In any exterior finish, more attention needs to put on water shed and allowing water to escape from underneath the siding.
As for stucco, there’s too many failures to mention. I think EIFS is the ultimate system...if done correctly.
WHAT EIFS??? Didn’t got the answer. Just point it out
Sorry I wasn’t more clear. EIFS is exterior insulated finishing system.

I'm still trying to understand how the polystyrene insulation is free-floating without fasteners. This is sheer sorcery!
Hahaha. Sorcery is right! Polymers (glue) and cement. It’s bonded and that’s it.
@@uptokode look carefully. Its free-floating behind it so water can flow. So.. how.. I want to see it.
The mortar is thick and installed with vertical strips. Say every 8” or so. This allows lots of contact for the bond but also leaves the drainage space.
Some newer foam has the grooves built in. Then you mortar the spots that will make contact with the liquid applied membrane that’s on the sheathing.
your music startles at the beginning of the video and is about as welcome as a firecracker.
Gold coat is junk. If your doing EFIS go with Dryvit. It's what I do for a living and stow is pretty bad honestly. Senergy is better than stow. You should have tracking at the bottom for a true water management system.
I like your input! Thanks.
first of all its Sto. educate yourself , second Sto was first on the market and is still a industry leader in development and application techniques of the eifs systems. Dryvits little penguin will always be waddling behind.
@@HMHangvr1 Thanks for the spelling correction. That alone tell's you how popular they are. We have had to go rip off a lot of sto product and redo it with Dryvit. There buckets of white base coat where terrible! Whenever I see a yellow bucket I kick it to the side.
@@RideFishHunt lol
If you do sto the right way it's good....its no 1 in europe ...weve used it in belgium since the late 1800's way before you were born ...we are all over 120 yrs now n still doing it ..lots of biafra and whiskey has kept us whole n healthy
:D
water behind anything is just an accident waiting for a place to happen. Just extend or the eaves furthere. You never want water on the walls
what? That is exactly what stucco is for, as it absorbs and lets all the water back out.if you paint it it will not absorb, so either way, for a southern climate both work.
Did your work is very rough. Look at all the bruise marks in the foam
It is what it is
not proper foam for a eifs system. eifs is required by spefication to use only 2' x 4' sheets of 1lb nominal density eps foam.
That requirement only for idiots!
No when eifs is done right no water gets it ,flashing and proper caulking and building caps water will not get in,end of story
I beg to differ. So many guys think the stucco finish is waterproof and it is not. There’s tons of rotting condo buildings out there.
Kody theres plenty of old rotting condos from 25yrs ago when eifs 1st came out
Its come a very long way
Gold coat for Sto & Backstop for Dryvit i think its called are the waterproof barriers
If its installed correctly there should be no issues
@@averageguy7641 Backstop made by Dryvit is a superior product. Mesh tape all seams and inside/outside corners.
@@uptokodeThat’s because they didn’t apply and finish EIFS correctly or window leaks like Pella had in their lawsuit many filed against them a few years ago.
