- While filming coral off the Solomon Islands, David Gruber, a National Geographic Emerging Explorer, encountered a "bright red-and-green spaceship." This underwater UFO turned out to be a hawksbill sea turtle, which is significant because it's the first time that biofluorescence has ever been seen in reptiles, according to Gruber. Gruber is now excited to learn more about this critically endangered species and how it is using biofluorescence.

Remember the difference between bioLUMinescent, and biofluorescent. They're using special lights, that interact specially with these fluorescent chemicals. Like shining a black light on fluorescent highlighter ink
***** Well, animals have different eyesight than us so some of them may be able to see it.
It could also be that with certain colors, it's easier to make a fluorescent version than a regular version.
Those guys are totally high.
+Tonatiuh García Masó hahahaa I can't stand your picture partner. l0l
+Gonjo Guaiya Ok?
+Tonatiuh García Masó nitrogen narcolepsy is a result of nitrogen dissolving in the blood stream whilst under higher than atmospheric pressure - such as when diving. The end result is that by diving, divers can soon exhibit symptoms similar to someone drunk on alcohol.
*Double post. Google sort your shit out.
+Tonatiuh García Masó Nah, just really happy and excited with their discovery. They seem really passionate.
Gotta catch em all! **throws pokeballs at the screen**
+Angreh Kittunz
jajajajajaja
This turtle is biofluorescent, not bioluminescent. The turtle is reflecting light that is cast, not producing it's own light (bioluminescence). There is a huge difference between the two.
Don't tell the Chinese, they'll hunt them to extinction because of magical healing powers
+lohphat Lmao! They'll probably grind it into powder or something.
+lohphat true story bro
and then Chinese people will start glowing yellow?
hahaha that's true too!
They've already found out about glowing cats. Not the turtles NOT THE TURTLES!!!
I wonder what that "I LIKE TURTLES!" kid is doing right now. We could really use his services on this one......
This turtle looks like it came out from Avatar... Amazingly beautiful! I hope we let it be & live... in peace.
+Incertus Veritas There are now about a million Chinese people wondering how they can get a chance to eat it.
+bennyboy af *billion
+Incertus Veritas Tell that to the chinese, and they'll go harpoon it to death and use it's shell for a decoration.
Mulinaster But it SHOULDN'T get used, because this could be the beginning of a new species, a new WONDERFUL species.
Mulinaster We kill pigs for FOOD, not for sport.
Looks like they were using UV dive lights to illuminate the corals and that's why they saw the bio-fluorescence on the hawksbill turtle.
I would imagine that most, if not all, hawksbill turtles will show BF under UV lights, it's just that normally turtles are not viewed under UV light.
+Cryptopolis ^This guy is right.
It's not that at all. It's actually the shell reflecting the moon light filtered through the water.
This.
+War Rock No, sorry, as the turtle moves away you can see that they are shining a light @ 2:17, as it hits the bottom instead of the turtle. The turtle only glows when the light is on it....It is not visible to the naked eye, so I don't see why it was advertised as such.
that's true. ;-)
Looks more like an underwater rave party than anything else.
I wish I was invited
This is crazy, think about how long humans have been on the Earth and explored all over with our technology and yet we STILL discover new things. It's so awesome! :D
The Turtle is Not Fluorescent, the algae or stuff growing on its shell is.
Sure it isnt glowing algae on the shell?
+Junyeong Yang Kinda looks like that. And the parts that aren't the "algae" aren't reflecting a different color than they do under regular light if you look at 2:26. I think these guys probably should have grabbed this turtle and gotten a better look at it before going gaga over its "reflecting two colors."
Show me a bioluminescent sea turtle and we'll talk.
it's so beautiful
Great video.
Scientists who really " know" -know that " We" know very little , while those who claim to " know"( just about " everything")really don't know between too little or nothing at all.
Beautiful Sea Turtle
Cool! Another freaky discovery of nature
A blacklight poster of that Turtle would be badass
Everything is glowing... Are you sure it's not just the light or camera?
BEAUTIFUL !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ♥♥♥
WOW fascinating @_@
Steve Zissou would love to encounter this amazing species.
I'm not surprised about this discovery. The vast oceans has got to be cool and weird creatures that we had not know about before, just like this turtle, so its expected ig
did it recently travel near fukoshima?..
No. The Solomon Islands are thousands of kilometers away from Japan.
properly just passing by
LOL you think radiation would make an animal bioluminescent??
+damedinn Radiation does not work that way. Bio-luminescence does not work that way. Radiation is not going to give you or the sea life glowing skin or super powers, just make you sick. Water is the best radiation shielding there is, anyway.
I bet this was more widely noticed when divers began carrying modern LED lights. "White" LEDs are actually deep enough blue to fluoresce, plus a little phosphor to make it white. It would show neon colors a lot more vividly.
Even 20 years ago an underwater blacklight would be complicated and bulky. Now it's actually simpler than a white one, just leave out the phosphor.
+Christian Lopez you watch to much movies...
Good documentation! Very cool!
Wow beautiful!
Beautiful Turtle!
OMG!!!!! That turtle is so CUTE!
That's awesome!
Save the turtles
very neat find Natgeo
This turtle is so AMAZING c:
Amazing Mother Nature!!
Way cool, enjoyed it..
Fluorescence comes into play at dusk when sunlight has proportionately more UV. Perhaps it helps them identify one another at that time of day.
Amazing !! Thank you !
What the fuck nat geo? You're shining uv light on it, that's why it's glowing... My god
Jack Ripper LOL I agree XD
wow this is great
Encore une fois meilleure vidéo
very interesting find and video
Its amazing ! I love this turtle ! But other glowing turtle exist ?
and the turtle was all like duuuude, wanna see some really cool shit

Its amazing how many people ignore the huge light they are using to make things glow, UV or black light or whatever, people still sound like they think they glow without it
This turtle has reached enlightenment it seems.
Woahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh that is amazinggggggggggggggggg
People need to know that this turtle is not generating any light. It's actually just reflecting the moon light and certain wavelengths of the light are filtered through the water.
interesting
I need to take a selfie with this turtle
A shining sea turtle appeared.
it makes sense that the turtles would be bio-florescent, because the coral that is under them is as well. meaning that the turtle is camouflaged into the coral reef.
I like turtles
That's cool
Aliens
Maravilhosa!!!!!
It has the OOZE!
They're like the ocean Siegfried and Roy.
it iz great
Awesome
ill comeback when the UFO was Godzilla back
We need to save these great turtles!!!!
MAGICAL!! I SEE RAINBOWS AND UNICORNS IN THE DISTANCE!!
#biofluorescence
I'm curios to know how this happens to many sea creatures as well as turtles now. Great video, thank you!
These guys didn't discover a bioluminescent turtle; a bioluminescent turtle discovered them.
Interessante!
He just called a turtle an "unidentified flying object".
After that they made love on the beach and made it glow with their black light.
There are also bio flourescent pigs. We were learning this in APbio. #2014-2015 #APbio
Wait 'til they find a bioflorescent Sasquatch
When I was in the Navy we went thru an area in the Indian Ocean where everything glowed.
The turtle was just hanging out with us? I don't think so....
wow
So he's going nuts over there being two colors, and no one else is looking at this and thinking the red color is just from algae growing on the shell?
Reminds me of Crush in Finding Nemo.
This is pure click bait, the turtle isn't really glowing, it's the UV light that's making it appear that way. Without a UV flashlight, it looks like a normal turtle.
Yes, I'm aware of that, but the title of this video was written for people, not turtles, and within that context it can't be said that the turtle is glowing, thus making the title of this video deceptive click bait
how do you know the turtle's shell is not just reflecting the underwater lights being shined on it? When coming up on the turtle with the lights, it did not look liked it "glowed" until the underwater light was directly on it. A correction in one of your earlier statements, regarding science focusing on bio-luminescence in the last 10 years. I personally dove with scientists 25 years ago who were studying this phenomena with marine creatures off of the southern coast of Puerto Rico. I know the studies go back a lot farther than 25 years too.
Plot twist she is a space turtle.
It's scary how scientists are creating animals like this in labs. What purpose do they serve other than acting as a stepping stone for the creation of human weapons?
WajiRock huh
This video was very off the hook but imagine turtles being extinct and we not knowing this amazing fact
oh man
i got my strobe light on
and i'm there man
And Mother Nature is now 20% COOLER!
Way cool! I wonder what the evolutionary advantage of this is?
What kind of lights are they using to bring out the biofluorescence, Black lights?
shining wartortle
Coral doesn't actually glow it's a symbiotic relationship with an algae that glows. Wonder if they found some way to live on this turtle's shell
Just amazing! How did these guys manage to figure this out? What tools did they use to see this happen?
+SIG442 eyes.
Randy1337 I said tools, not bodyparts. Stupid.
SIG442
Well, that is the only "tool" you need.Stupid.
Shiny squirtle
The real owners of the planet... ::)
I should not say things if I'm not sure but I'm been concerned with this nuclear spills in Japan but it's beautiful to see animals like this in the wild
so they took a uv light to the ocean. wow. you know they're super high
It could just be an algae on the turtle, but I suppose the design of the fluorescent says otherwise.
My question is: Is it a ninja turtle and does it eat pizza?
Probably some kind of bacteria/organism living in a symbiotic relationship with the turtle.
omg its a freaking hawksbill turtle they're the only turtle that can glow!!!!
This was posted in FB and it says it can be used to improve ways in battling cancers in humans. I don't think it was explained how though..
The Turtle was raised in captivety don't be fooled.
thanks Kobe Japan
pausing at 2:16... it doesnt look like any of the Red biofluorescence is originally from the turtle, like its been splattered on there either from rubbing against something or from algae. interesting
Why haven't we discover this earlier??? Or ever even discussed about?
he sounds like my cell bio professor saxena ankur
