- "Yellow River" is a song recorded by the British band Christie. It was released in 1970 and became a No. 1 hit song for the band in the UK.
The actual location of Yellow River in this song is not specified, although the author, Jeff Christie, is on record as saying that it was inspired by the idea of a soldier going home at the end of the American Civil War. As the song was released during the Vietnam War, it has been interpreted as being about a soldier leaving the U.S. Military at the end of his period of conscription.
I was a mere lad of thirteen when “Yellow River” by Christie was heard on my favorite AM radio station, KSLY San Luis Obispo, California. Still digging it in 2024.
Yes, me too, thanks.

Yellow River is a mythical place in your mind ('In my mind, and in my eyes'), the place the GI (soldier in US English) will return after the war. He is happy to be leaving and setting down the weapons of war. However, he hints that the war is still in his soul ('Cannon fire lingers in my mind'), something most combat veterans know looms ahead after they get home. Even with that pull, the absolute lore of home overpowers those feelings. Home is on the other end. Even have a girl back there. The song has the pace of a ballad from old times, such as the American Civil War period 'Johnny Came Marching Home' and others. It's vernacular not really of the modern era (today cannon fire is artillery fire) or (you can take my place) in the line, today it would be 'I'm outta here'. That said this is a very well written and performed song. 'Christie' does a good job with it. I'm surprised it gets as little notice today compared to others, but I think it gets lumped in as a Vietnam song, sort of like 'Galveston' which is also vague. Classic music.
My dad bought me my first player and this was the first English song I heard this lifetime, at the age of ten❤
In my younger days I sang this in our rock & Roll band.
Esos tiempos de mí infancia juvenil dónde era muy feliz y no lo sabía
