We had some "spirited discussions" about the pup fish, & similar situations, when I was in school (WVU College of Forestry & Wildlife Management, Class of '81), & I never got the "save 'em all" point of view. Now I am a county Vegetation Management Coordinator for my state's Dept. of Transportation, so I am now even more firmly on your side of the issue. When we have to patch up 10-12 year old plow trucks & we get hundreds of calls a day about the condition of our roads, it's really hard to understand how this minnow "deserves" ANY of our tax dollars. And don't even get me started about invasive species.... Thanks again, & KEEP 'EM COMING!!!!

Spot on with the funding, as a career federal retiree (Forester) the way funding happens is ridiculous. End of year Frivolous spending just to spend because if we don't obligate the money we won't get it next year. Rand Paul is spot on, important bills should be voted on alone. Exactly! I saw that too in a couple research labs. Have thousands of dollars left over at the end of the year to spend on silly, useless things. If you don’t spend it, then they won’t allot it to you next year because you clearly don’t need it. Its nuts! 🥜 Single issue bills are the way to go, no matter what side you’re on.
Ha ha, deals have to be made in order to get a group of politicians with different constituents to agree to pass a law (example is Florida wouldn’t want to vote to spend money for water conservation in the desert). Politicians can’t even be trusted among themselves enough to need to sign a couple of different bills once the bill that took care of their concerns is signed.

I wonder how many people visiting Death Valley even know about this area. I believe the current "cage" over the main hole was built after some local boys were seen jumping on that shelf where the algae grows. Fun fact, the water is so deep that when there is an earthquake somewhere the water level changes in conjunction with the movement of the earth's magma.
After the agriculture left, there were plans to build a housing development due to the abundant ground water. The uniqueness of the pup fish habitat was used to prevent the project.
My guess is if we just left the little guys in devil's hole alone, their survival would follow its natural course. Maybe they'd make it, maybe not. Nature experiments and not everything works.

This adventure brought me back a few years remembering the controversy over those pup fish. I was on the side of feeding AMERICANS instead of some little minnow in someplace I'd never see anyway. However you two did bring me along with you to see where we are WASTING our tax money just feeding the pockets of scientists and politicians! Thanks for another great video and for sharing the controversy of the Pupfish with nuance. As a park ranger, I'm definitely torn on this. I'm all for saving species and biodiversity, but also at the same time have witnessed some interesting uses of tax payer funds that didn't strike me as the best way to use them.
Hey, thanks for the comment! It’s always good to get a different perspective, especially from someone who works in the field. Interesting that you’ve seen it too. While we were in Guam, the Fish and Wildlife refuge had funding cut and could only afford a couple employees. They were operating on a small budget, trying to keep a bunch of endemic plants propagated while also doing cultural outreach, tours, and invasive species management. It seemed like a real struggle at times. But then I see millions of dollars for this fish and ask why that refuge was struggling so much. The allocations are odd

Don't care about the pupfish, but they used to grow grass in parts of the Nevada desert and export sod because an aquifer that took millions of years to accumulate was just given to a few farmers basically for free. But yeah, someone could take a tiny fraction of that money, preserve an acre of rainforest and save 1000 species.
That's crazy! Pumping aquifers dry and diverting/draining the Colorado River to the point where it doesn't even reach the Sea of Cortez anymore is sad too.

As early as 1998, the river weakened from a hundred suckers, the estuary was a vast wind-blown sand-pit.
In the Sea Of Cortez, uncountable plants and animals relied on those nutrients shared by the Colorado.

It is an interesting problem of what is the incremental value of each species and how much money are you willing to toss at it. Right now we have a 34 Trillion debt so soon we will be faced with how much money for pup fish vs how much money for Medicare. As a soon to retire worker, I have paid into the fed for decades and it is now my term to extract my pound of flesh from the feds and recover some of the money I was forced to contribute. Right now, if that comes at the expense of a pup fish so be it. I suspect though I will lose out for the first round or two, but eventually the many programs like this will be cut because pup fish can't vote, but I will.

Big controversy on a lot of species. Some should be left to fend for themselves. I think conservation and study of wildlife to help control it is needed. However, doing the back door bills and giving millions and sneaking it in is wrong. Don’t get me wrong I believe studying it is great but not at the cost of millions of dollars.
Even the reintroduction of wolves in the west or elk in the east were and still are controversial! The back door deals are crazy, not just wildlife related.

I can tell you it’s called the gateway to hell. My client told me about this place. When he was in college he was doing an assignment about paranormal activity. He and a few other students went there and caught it in camera. They ended up with the a deal with the travel channel and it became pretty popular. Ghost Adventures was the name of the show. He told me something followed him home and messed with his family.

The last vandalism/trespassing incident there from 2017 was 3 men accused of harming an endangered species and vandalism of government equipment when they shot a bunch of signs and peed and got sick in the hole. They plead guilty to violating the Endangered Species Act, which carries a potential maximum penalty of up to one year in prison and/or a fine of up to $50,000.
