That run was iconic because of the stumbling at the end. It showed perfectly how much heart Steve Young had in everything he did on the field. He gave his all in every play.
Paul James it is also hilarious cause it shows this undersized white guy just crossed up some of the world’s most elite athletes and then stumbles his way into the end zone
That and the 49ers playcaller.
Actually, Steve Young was as athletic as almost any NFL quarterback I can remember - the one possible exception would be Randall Cunningham, who was off the charts athletic. But Young had a rare combination of speed and power that was as elite as his record-setting accuracy. Definitely one of the best QBs in NFL history.
@@TheRealDonLayton you're forgetting Vick, cam newton... and also arguably kordell stewart, McNabb, rg3 before his first injury, early vince young, russell wilson, maybe rodgers
@@marklewandowski8474 in Young's era*
Everything about that play was absolutely perfect, the run, jukes, blockers, defense, timing, stumbling, everything! Well worthy to be called number 1 in qb runs
Prefect, except that it was called as a pass play.
Harrison's interception and run back in the Superbowl is similar to Young's run here in that they both looked improbable while they were happening.
It was great, but people are forgetting times when Roger Staubach did likewise.
@@watchgoose Capt America was amazing!
7:12 Those WR Blocks, especially Jerry Rice’s at the end to free up Steve Young, were crucial!
Definitely. And not to diminish what Steve did--he was absolutely amazing. But all those downfield blocks! My God! It really was a team effort.
During the 90s, I had a roommate that was from Los Angeles and he was an Rams fan. Naturally he hated my 49ers but he admitted two things:
He loved Joe Montana despite him being a 49er and that SF blocked for each other.
They were both great blockers.
Taylor wasn't 'just a punt returner.' In his second year, 1988, he took the starting WR job from Mike Wilson during the season. Taylor started for the next 7 years, had two 1000+ seasons and ended up averaging 16.1 yards/reception for his career (16.0 in the playoffs) all while playing second fiddle to Jerry Rice.
He was a top 10receiver in all of football in the late 80'sHe could have went to another team and been a number 1. He had more speed than rice and his hands were as good. I cant count how many one handed catches I saw him make. Jerry Rice later said that he was grateful to have Taylor on the other side. Who knows what Taylor could have been but to call him just a pro bowl punt returner is moronic. He was a hell of a receiver. Just ask the rams that are still trying to catch him on that Monday night game in 1989!
He had 14 catches in 1988. Referring to him as a pro bowl punt returner is perfectly acceptable for this video.
I was at that game sitting in the end zone on the left side about 20 rows from the field.
I was using my binoculars to watch the play, and when the pocket collapsed I thought Young had been sacked and dropped my binoculars to my chest and said "Damn!"
Then the crowd noise swelled up, and I stood up looking at the play as Young just eeked by the linebacker that almost had him! He ran and just before the end zone to my right he stumbled and almost lost the ball as he tripped into the end zone out of gas and scored the touchdown!
I think I almost lost my voice on that play as the crowd roared with me along with it! It was one of many amazing plays I was lucky enough to witness in the 1980s and 1990s during the height of the 49er decade of dominance.
I'm glad you paid homage to Young for this play because I was always a fan of his even though most 49er fans felt that saying you liked Young too was tantamount to being a traitor to the icon of Montana.
I supported him and spoke up to my friends and said Young is still a great Quarterback as people would scoff and say the obvious "Steve Young ain't no Montana!" and I'd take a lot of shit for sticking up for him.
That's why I was so happy and emotional when Young finally won a Super Bowl and got rid of the monkey of Montana's ghost off his back.
People blamed Steve Young for the 49ers letting Montana go, and although I hated to see Joe go, I knew it wasn't fair to blame Young for that. It was the organization's and coaches decision that sent Montana on his way after Montana battled back from crushing injuries to his back and his throwing arm elbow. And either one of those would have ended other lesser men's carriers.
I hated to see Montana go, but kept sticking up for Young until he gave both of us vindication by winning the SuperBowl. And it sure was a sweet victory to watch Young get that monkey off his back, and for me to be vindicated for being his supporter for all the time he spent being maligned under Joe Montana's shadow.
Thanks Steve for hanging in there and sacraficing for so long, and for being a true 49er and vindicating yourself to everyone who had doubts about you, especially me so I could give the doubters the middle finger and say "I told you so!".
Your True Fan and supporter,
Casey in SF👍🏻👌😎
Hello great story dude! I wished be there too! Regards! 🏈🏆#Goniners
Salute!
I love Steve Young but I will always love Montana more and I kinda wish some other team would've traded for him instead of Bill Walsh and the niners. He was good enough to be a starter for sure and should be but I always felt he should shine on another team; I didn't like the decision to choose him over the better qualified Montana once Joe returned from his massive injury. I never liked that cliched statement about getting the monkey off his back. If there was ever any monkey you want on your back it'd be Montana. To me it just seemed like Young stole the team away from Montana and there was this great divide and divorce. I remember my brother followed Montana and supported the Chiefs for his favorite while I still stuck to supporting the niners with Young because Rice was my all time favorite receiver. I was proud Steve Young was able to get to Superbowl 29 and win it but at the same time, I missed Montana and it seemed sad to know that we'd never see Joe in a 49er uniform again. It was difficult time.
Steve is arguably one of the most complete QB's ever. Not only great at throwing but is also a threat with his legs.
I have his throw back jersey ...love Young.
Waaaaayyy ahead of his time, I wear his jersey every gameday 💪🏻
I'm glad Elliot Harrison's videos have a home. Please don't ever stop doing them, they are great
Chris Collinsworth would've been like "whoaa, now here's a guy..." & Al Michaels would've said "Young with a little razzle dazzle" in the most boring way possible.
I'm a N.Y Giants fan but Steve Young is my idol, I grew up watching him, I imitated his game, I always wanted to be like Young and in my opinion I think he's the greatest QB of all time. Most people call me crazy because I think he's the greatest but that's my opinion.
I agree with you
I don't know about greatest, but he sure is my favorite! Im a huge byu fan and very mormon Haha so he is my idol. Drew breese and Russell Wilson round out my 3 fav ever
He's the best. I don't know about stats and all but just by the eye test.
As a TB Buc fan, I can tel you, I loved him even as we stunk up a stadium. I believe he is the most accurate...or has rthwe highest percentage completions ( afer 100 passes) I any event ..he was aone helluva QB
Mine too. To put yourself behind a legand and bide your time. Got better and better because of his extreme preparation and determination. I'm a Cougars fan too so we loved Steve way back. But there too he played behind a legend Jim McMahon. And to think at 8th string he almost quit. As he was way home sick
Seen this play many times over the years but never understood the context behind it. This is a really cool video.
It was a monster MVP type run
One thing often overlooked about the 49ers is that they were the best blocking WRs in football, maybe ever. Rice has many memorable blocks to set off long runs or catches.
Vikings should really bring back those away uniforms back, they're awesome
ynohtnA yeah they are better
It's going to take more than that to win SUPERBOWL!!! N
@@user-co1gi7yd2r They looked good but it was time for a change.
Best left handed QB 🐐
I'm a huge Mike Vick fan.... but that was the best run ever by a QB!!!!!💯
I was waiting for someone to say Vick's name. Lol. Although Vick was a better producer of ground yardage, Young made the run that counted the most.
Michael Vick? How could you like an asshole that supports DOG FIGHTING? I think he should STILL be in prison. Please pick some other athlete to support. In takes a depraved heart to do that to dogs. No matter how much he said he was sorry I'll never believe him. He tortured and killed dogs for money! That's the definition of a sick bastard!...and you're a fan of his? Think deep about that.
@@marstondavis It's just dogs. Big deal. Mean while, Biden is killing human beings and kids over in Afghanistan.
Steve Young was Mike Vick's idol, so I think Vick would agree with you!
Indeed one of the greatest QB runs ever and It's pretty cool how there's a larger story behind it all.
Another great QB run (tho not for what the QB did but rather just how badly the defense completely got fooled on the bootleg) was Steve Bono's run against the Cardinals in 1995.
SPTO sbnation made a great video about it
@@dillpickle5621 That's the video I was watching when UA-cam recommended this one :)
If we're talking top-of-the-line bootlegs, you might wanna bring up Peyton Manning. Three of the best bootlegs I've ever seen were him against the Bills, Raiders, and Cowboys.
That was crazy
The '80s-'90s were the 49ers's golden era.
I love how he avoids all those tackles and then almost trips over...THE AIR!
Turf monster got him
It's all those Chalk Lines..!
Steve Young joined BYU coming from an option school. He was 8th on the depth chart behind a slew of amazing QB talent. He said he didn't actually know how to really throw a ball until he watched Jim McMahon closely and emulated him. Once he saw and figured out that he had to kind of twist his wrist and throw the ball like a screw ball, it changed everything for him. He found he could throw the ball 5x harder with 10x more accuracy.
Funny thing is that Young was always criticized for having so so arm strength
Living across the bay from S.F. I was watching that game with friends in my apartment. We were drinking some brews and eating some chips & dip. When that run was over the room was a mess! We were all jumping up and down & screaming. That place was a 42 unit apt. house and everybody was going nuts. Even the apt. mgr. ran outside and was screaming. I remember how the whole Bay Area was on Monday. That's all everybody was talking about. 'The Run'. What a wonderful memory. The 49er's were a really great team.
The guy is such a legend and revolutionized the position. Thank you Steve!
I was born in 85 and it looks so funny MARLBORO ads on a football field
Derek Dick hahaha old idiot
Gsfbffx Pdhhdf haha young fool u got me 👎
I can remember about the time you were born seeing advertising for chewing tobacco on television and not just in print.
@first/m /last The one I remember was for Redman. It showed an older guy getting under the hood of his truck and putting in a wad of chaw, with some Field & Stream type music playing. I think I was in Kindergarten at the time. Obviously, I knew about chewing gum and thought this was the same concept, because I had never seen anyone do that in real life. My Mom had to explain to me why that product was not for kids (and pretty stupid for adults, too).
Derek Dick and imagine many of those didn’t start smoking.
Growing up, this run used to inspire me so much...but I also loved his run against the Rams back in the ‘92 regular season. That was a great run (and game) as well.
GOT TO LOVE THE NFL FILMS BACKGROUND MUSIC
Angry-est I think it’s nice, it adds an element of consistency to all their stuff
Thank you for finally doing a Steve young bus much appreciated
This video is perfect. I wish other iconic plays were shown in their context exactly in this level of detail. Tks!
I swear Steve Young is a Jedi. He seemed to make a few of those guys miss with just his mind!
Vintage Steve Young #8 💪
What a tribute video!! I lived in the Bay Area in the 80s and that team and the city were legendary then!
Love this channel - I remember watching that game
I remember Young making many crazy runs in his career. He was fun to watch.
Amazing video. Love all your vids. Best channel on youtube.
Dont watch steve young, watch everyone else set themselves up for the perfect block. this run was amazing.
Thanks for the SB Steve 👍👌💪
Amazing video. Well done
Hell of a block by Rice at the end of the play
As a 49ers fan, I thank you for this great video.
I live in NYC but feel blessed to have grown up in SF during the Niner Dynasty. 49er for life!!!
man I remember watching this game! Steve Young was the best running qb
This run saved the 49ers 1988 season as they won this game 24-21 and finished with a record of 10-6 which got them the division title and first round bye despite the Rams also having 10-6 record and made it to the wild card and saints also 10-6 and missed the playoffs
Young had massive shoes to fill when he got to SF; Boy, did he ever fill them!
The common denominator seemed to be Jerry Rice.🏈
This run is a work of art!!!
0:14. Joey Browner tackles a BLOCKER, LOL!!
I'm a die-hard niner fan the first game I ever saw was super bowl 23 so I never knew the context behind Young's crazy run against the Vikings... Thank you for posting this that was awesome!!!
everything at one play. legendary.
I remember watching that game live. Amazing
Steve Young was an unbelievable athlete even to this day
These blocks are incredible
Steve's run to the endzone vs Minnesota. I was sitting in that endzone, and snapped off a series of 11 photographs l have to this day.
We were blessed in S.F. to have Montana and Young on the team. Loved Joe, but Young also busted his balls to be accepted there as the starting QB for the 49ers. Montana may have been traded to the Chiefs, but San Fran was still Montana's town, and fans weren't happy about that trade, weren't happy about Young taking over.
Young played crazy, like he had something to prove. I loved him for that.
I think being a Mormon and a supporter of conservative Republicans hurt Young.
We are a city that doesn't like bigotry ( not saying Steve was, but he was suspect)
That was a lot of great down field blocking from Tom Rathman, Guy Mcintyre, John Taylor and Jerry Rice.
Its no longer the longest QB run in history but no other QB will come close with all the broken tackles and stumbling Young did. Dude was deff ahead of his time as a running QB.
Ahead of his time is debatable. Don't be wrong Steve Young's runs were electric, but Fran Tarkenton had been doing that almost 3 decades before. Tarkenton was truly ahead of his time
The play calling matching the passion displayed is what makes this play so bone chilling to me.
The first college football game I ever saw in person was BYU against UGA, in 1982. Steve Young vs Hershel Walker. It was a great game. A late Kevin Walker field goal won it for the Bulldogs.
That was GREAT!!
They had a linebacker on a young Jerry Rice 😯😄😅😂.
Wasn't Rice slightly injured?
I was at that game with seats in the end zone and watched the whole play as Steve ran right at us!!.it was crazy!
BYU produced so many great QBs. LaVell Edwards is a legend. Great video.
Great blocks by WRs at the finish of that crazy Young run! Jerry Rice became a wall to Jesse Solomon and Mike Wilson staved off Joey Browner. Pat Summerall was so stunned that he had to shout "Touchdown!" twice! Great years for the NFL!
Awesome
1:24 Steve Young got hit so hard he straight dissapeared for a couple seconds
How to get your channel logo as wallpaper? Looks really cool with the animated players. :)
My favorite player of all-time is Jerry Rice. Super Bowl 23 was the first football game I ever watched. I was 7 and didn't understand all the rules of football, but it was clear that #80 was amazing. I didn't know that the comeback and Rice's MVP performance wouldn't have occurred without this run. Makes me love Steve Young even more.
Good job
Young wasn't seen as a QB by many early in his career. It was really tough to be a running QB back then, partly because hand-blocking had only recently been legalized. He played a little tailback in the USFL and BYU brought him in as a defensive back. People forget how fast he was--he was faster than Jerry Rice. Vinny Testaverde had a couple of crazy runs, and he was super slow. The only time Brady has missed the playoffs is when Vinny Testaverde ran a surprise option with Curtis Martin.
My favorite qb from my favorite team.
This run was great cause of the traffic, the stumble, and the timing. But Steve Bonos 76 yarder for the Chief's was something to behold no one was in 25 yards, no one on the screen past the line of scrimmage. And he was slow.
Calling John Taylor a punt returner. He did return punts but he was a great wide reciever
Yeah. That "punt returner" made the game winning TD catch in SB XXIII.
It's also good to know that Steve Young is apart of 2 records that will probably never be broken. 6 TD's in a Superbowl.
I thought Peyton may have a shot at that or Brady but not even close. Also, the point spread in that game he threw for 6 TD's was 21 points given to the Chargers of which the Niners covered winning by 25. Funny, that I knew several Dallas fans who put down big money and lost. There will probably never be another lopsided point spread in a Superbowl as far as Vegas is concerned.
This is most certainly a top 10 run in NFL history!
You see Jerry lay the boom. I love it. I met both these dudes in Lake Tahoe. Stand up dudes. Especially Jerry literally danced and partied all night. In Heavenly village Steve gave me a not now bro i with my family look. Which i respected.
I'm pretty sure this was the moment that Steve Young won the hearts of everyone that remained on the team in 1994. Along with the explosion during the Eagles game in 94, this was one of his defining leadership moments.
There was a much crazier touchdown run by Steve Young than this. He ran down the middle of the field, and juked and bounced off of so many tacklers, that he probably ran 50 yards to score a 30-yard touchdown. The cool thing is, I saw the clip in slow motion, and it was insane the determination this man had. Nothing and no one was going to stop him from scoring the touchdown, which he barely did, falling down right at the goal line. He looked more like a running back then a quarterback.
That block by Rice 🔥
This should go down in Football History as 'The Run'.
The greatest QB run but some of the most textbook blocking you'll ever see too... Tom Rathman opened it up. A beast.
was a better qb than montana at the time he signed with the niners, arguably the best in the league. but there was no way walsh was going to bench montana. just bad timing for young
Yep, Brother Steve was a great QB, and a scrambler.😎
Man those were good times...go 9ers!!
Young actually threw more TD passes to Rice than Montana did.
This video is great, but Bill Walsh saved Young’s career. If he stayed in Tampa, we wouldn’t be talking about Hall of Fame quarterback Steve Young. The people around you do matter.
Without a doubt... that's why it's the ultimate Team Sport!
Amazing run but BLOCKING was A1!!!!
This run should rightly be considered one of the best in NFL history as it shows no matter the ability of the ball carrier, football when it's all said and done, is a TEAM sport. Look at what you can achieve when EVERYONE does their bit! All those key blocks thrown downfield by the 49ers - this play would have made Vince Lombardi tear up with pride!
Young was a beast. Glad he got to win a superbowl.
Didn't Know Mr. Rice was a professional clock cleaner. Holly shit!
The Niners didn't gel until very late in the season.
They basically conceded the final game of the season to rest their stars.
But, it was looking like they wouldn't make post- season.
Beating the Bears in Chicago in freezing cold, was the true start of the Montana, Rice , Niners legend.
Just check out Rice's td that turned the game around
steve young and Jerry Rice= The bomb squad.
every video of this steve young run should be called by lon simmons. simmon's call made that run even more awesome.
What about of Michael Vick against the Vikings back in 2001?
This is the greatest quarterback run of all time.
When u talk about greatness
steve young story is really inspiring. a man who USFL and when it folded. he went to tampa bay. he did his heart out but at that time. Tampa Bay were awful. and the only reason why he came to 49ers b/c bill Wash said that Joe Montana back is getting worse and Joe would retire. we know what happen. steve young waited 4 seasons and work his ass off. and when Joe was hurt. he put his heart into it. im a huge of steve young. but to me the greatest QB is joe Montana. but steve young story was very touching when you hear it.
I won a Steve young rookie card in a poker game when I was 14 years old. Still have the card lol, that was almost 25 years ago!
You should of seen mine after Al Bundy scored his fourth touchdown, now that was special, but this was good too
Honorable mention: Kenny Stablers run for a touchdown to put the Raiders up 7-6 v the Steelers, just prior to the Immaculate Reception. It got lost in the history books because of Franco Harris's catch.
Stabler never ran the ball, so it was pretty incredible!
I knew a guy who played defensive end for the 49ers. He said there was one word in Bill Walsh's dictionary -win.
Great football in the day.
Wow😃💪
Steve Young best rushing quarterback of all time game winning Drive against Minnesota Vikings in 1988 Lon Simmons call dramatic finish and Chris Berman ESPN NFL Primetime he could go all the way
Yes, Lon Simmons' call of this play for the 49ers' radio network was breathtaking, but again, the great simplicity of Pat Summerall does it for me!
What I love is how his teammates are blocking for him all the way down the field
One of the greatest runs in history (RBs included).
