Helped me. Will clean plug, and maybe move plug or coil pack to see if problem moves. see this using XTOOL D8 on 1999 328i E46 manual.

Interesting with your numbers, when I was checking the same values on my F30 335i, with the same scanner. My smooth running values keep going down to minus values as well. Yours only seem to go positive, got no misfire codes thou.

Thanks I was looking at those values trying to look for a misfire, and this was the first time I came across to that pid, so I assume the closer to 0 the better is running? Anything over 1.0 is high and requires attention?

My e60 with n52 engine, some of the cylinders gives high value from 100 to 200, no misfire code and it happen intermittently. I have bought new spark plugs and will be replacing soon, hopefully it fix it

I would also check the alternator voltage. As crazy as it sounds, the alternator may cause it. Not only the voltage at idle, but the voltage while driving too (the way to do it is to use one of the Bluetooth OBD2 that connect to the phone, and monitor the voltage that way). Whats the mileage on your car?

    Great video!
What is the range of optimal running value , otherwise the range that should be
    Thanks.

Difference between cylinders than should not be more than 10% ,right ??

What the problem of misfire cylinder 4,5,6 and how to fix ?

    • @CarInspected

normally that would prompt a check of the O2 sensors, especially the one on the downpipes that come from Cylinders 4, 5, and 6.
Also, get a voltage reading while engine is at idle, to make sure your alternator is making enough voltage, those cars are very sensitive to voltage irregularity.

Hi Sinan, how much tolerance is accepted for an e46 with ~100k miles?
    Thanks

Hi. Are you asking because you have a similar problem to the one in this video? I found that a steady voltage (alternator that wasn't functioning well at the time of the video) can affect the smooth running values. Check the voltage of the car when it's at idle and while driving, and if the alternator is producing around 13V, then your battery would not be drained, yet some systems in the car (especially ones that are designed to run while driving) may not work as designed.

@@CarInspected Thanks for reply, Yes I do have similar reading except the numbers change between pistons from day to another, battery is charging as normal when engine is running.
But i do have "fuel trim range exceeded" codes for bank 1 & 2 .. the oxygen sensors 1 & 2 reading 0.02 V or similar 0.0x number (which is too low for a working sensor to my knowledge) and they don't go up with engine rev. I think they're faulty.
But i have been searching since morning about what a normal reading they should be and couldn't find a definite answer.

The voltage can cause most of the symptoms you're describing. My recommendation is to access the voltage reading (get a 12V socket outlet with voltage reading and USB charging, From Amazon, they're around $20, and drive the car for few days, see how much the voltage is while driving, anything below 13.5 is a red flag).... what's the mileage?

@@CarInspected It has just done 100k miles. 2006 330ci coupe.
I have Creator 410 scanner, have already measured the voltage while idling and moving. i've never seen it below 13.6 V. usually around 13.8 ± 0.2 V.
I had intake boot leak (the one that connect to the throttle body and ICV), which caused the car to stall on starting (doesn't idle more than ~10 sec). This is now already replaced and the car doesn't stall anymore.
But then the code "fuel trim range exceeded" kept returning back. specially when driving on the motorway (within the speed limit no childish driving at all).
The only thing that doesn't make sense in the scanner is the oxygen sensors before & after cat. all 4 are reading 0.02 ~ 0.04 V and not changing regardless if idling or moving, low rpm or high rpm.

Hi, does smooth running value similar to rough running value?, because I have 1.10 as a rough running value, cylinder 7 on my E70 X5.
    Thanks

My voltage reading is 14 V with engine running, I may need to change spark plugs and full filter.
      Many Thanks

@@CarInspected Hi, did you mean you ran another scanner ton this bmw?
And if you fixed it where was the problem?
