      So much fun growing up in the 80's. Bought a numbers matching 1970 GTO for $1500. Beat the new Corvette, beat a Porsche 911. All expensive cars. As a 17yr. old, was like being the underdog.

    Well, there's nothing like a small car with a big motor. 707 hp Hellcat? Wow! Even if it had drag slicks on it, it'd probably be in the jersey barrier. For some reason, every new high horsepower car I see a video of, Mustang, Challenger, Camaro or Vette, just can't seem to keep it straight on hard acceleration. It's all about horsepower to weight ratio, and traction. 1000 hp doesn't mean shit, if you can't get it to the ground.

      Chris Daigle I'm Bob Glidden's (self proclaimed) #1 fan. When did Bob Glidden run a Maverick? He ran Pintos, a '70 Mustang, Mustang IIs, Fairmonts, an EXP, T-Birds, Probes, (and yes a Plymouth Arrow for 1 season and a Chevy Monza at 1 race but didn't qualify) but I've never seen a picture or heard of him running a Maverick. Hubert Platt, Dyno Don (Ford's first NHRA Pro Stock win was Dyno Don's 427 S.O.H.C. Maverick at the 1972 Summer Nationals), and Gapp & Roush (the 4-door "Tejana Taxi") ran Mavericks.

    • @foxfordcatguy2283

      Correction: I remembered wrong, "Dyno" Don's PS Maverick won the '71 Summer Nats not '72. For '72 he went with a 351C Pinto.
      Also: Wayne Gapp's 4 door Maverick was a Boss 429. He was Ford's head engineer in charge development of the Boss 429.

    A lot of information missing here! What are the cars total weights? Even an estimate would be good. Is the Maverick engine blown or naturally aspirated? Does the Maverick engine use Nitrous Oxide? (doesn't look like it) Horsepower rating for the Hellcat is generally well known, what about the Maverick? Almost all drag racing enthusiasts who build engines dyno them to get a HP rating.

    LMAO..........The excuses i hear Hemi lovers use, don't matter how many times a Ford leaves behind, the driver has a lot to with Drag Racing, but show me a Factory Muscle Dodge Product driven everyday with a 100,000 and still pull it out the Garage, start'r up and run with the best. NO it has to sit there barely be Driven to even start, Ford you can drive everyday, everywhere and still 10 yrs down the road sounding and running strong.

      You dont understand drag racing....Factory stock Mopar always beat a Ford,all the time...
      Top Fuel,Alcohol Drag racing today as always ford uses a Chrysler Hemi..GM,Toyota does as well..Mopar Rules !
      Hellcats run high 10's bone stock...They spin they run 11's,12's,13',14,15,16,17,18 ,19 second 1/4 mile times...As when you spin you lose !
      Back in the day a 428 scy Torino 4.30 axle got ruined by a 16 year old girl in a new 1974 Slant 6 Valiant 4 door,bone stock ! Torino had carb,headers,cam and was a turd as it couldnt run 17 second 1/4 mile and lost to a slant 6 Valiant..Fords were always slow as a slug ! Thats your thinking...as you dont understand drag racing ,tire spinning,bad reaction etc.

    Color reminds me of brand new '72 Mercury Comet GT my dad bought me because I made good grades in high school. 302, no A/C, no P/S, no P/B. All 302 ci's went to those poor tires in the rear. Ran it against '71 318 Cuda, '69 383 Road Runner, '67 390 GTO, '66 Tempest, '63 383 Belvedere (it was a small town). Outran a '73 Vette late one night on I-40 in Oklahoma. Never shamed me. Sold it in '75 because I was now "mature college man". Second biggest regret of my life.

    I'm digging old Mavericks lately for some reason. Having a 1400 to 1500 weight advantage kind of helps on launch. Given the distance, this race was over before it started. Had the race been longer, the Hellcat would have eventually freight trained the Maverick. Good race though.

    • @66cometman

      You must've missed the license plates on the Maverick. It's a daily driver 3 seasons out of the year.

    • @charlesmarshall2697
      @charlesmarshall2697 5 років тому

      @@66cometman I didn't miss it. A daily driver is a reliable safe and comfortable vehicle that can make a long trip without issues and that Maverick ain't one of those. I don't care if you're a GM, Ford or Mopar guy, That applies to all brands.

    • @66cometman
      @66cometman  5 років тому

      @@charlesmarshall2697 why are you trying to skew the definition of a daily driver? It's literally just a vehicle that you drive every day depending on the weather. You also don't know anything about this Maverick other than what my description tells you. You can drive it anywhere you can drive that Hellcat. You're relying on a false premise to make your point. This is just a 1972 muscle car vs. a 2015 muscle car. I'm not saying one is better than the other, just appreciate them for what they are.

    • @charlesmarshall2697
      @charlesmarshall2697 5 років тому

      @@66cometman Nonsense. I'd make the same argument if it were a Duster with a built high horsepower Mopar small block. You can drive that Hellcat at an 80 MPH cruise from coast to coast in air conditioned comfort with safety features no restomod could ever have. Your Maverick simply cant do that. There is no false premise there!

    • @66cometman
      @66cometman  5 років тому

      @@charlesmarshall2697 Ok, so one of them is more comfortable for driving than the other. How does that impact this race in any way? What would you be saying if it were a Tesla racing that Hellcat? Both comfortable to drive, Hellcat still loses the race. That's why I'm not sure what comfort has to do with this race. If this were a quarter mile race then the Hellcat would have beaten the Maverick. But it wasn't, and it didn't. My main complaint is that you would dismiss the race by calling a 350 HP max car a tow it there race car. That's the real nonsense.

  • @mikeadcock1592
    @mikeadcock1592 5 років тому +1

    That's gotta be the worst reaction time I've ever seen!!! Lol Did the Challenger driver put the car in park, cut it off, and put the keys in his pocket? This is the main issue with "bought" horsepower vs "built" horsepower whether it be a Challenger, Camaro, or Mustang, while almost anyone who can afford one of these cars can buy one, very few actually know how to drive them. Its also hard to out- launch a 4- link and sticky tires. Most of the Hellcats came with pirelli p-zero radials which live up to their name...zero traction. I grew up in the eighties and I love the old school horsepower but some of these new cars I previously mentioned can be lethal with someone who knows what they're doing in them. That Maverick is a cool ass car and it looks like it's well built with its mild "Haha" 351
