So much fun growing up in the 80's. Bought a numbers matching 1970 GTO for $1500. Beat the new Corvette, beat a Porsche 911. All expensive cars. As a 17yr. old, was like being the underdog.

Too much shit in modern muscle that doesn't have anything to do with making it go or stop. You can get most older muscle cars to handle well with bolt on kits. Its hard to strip all the unneccesary crap out of newer cars to get the weight down.

That was fun to watch! A friend of mine had a green Maverick with a 302, two barrel, single exhaust that would smoke the rear tire for 100 feet! Funniest thing I ever saw!
Well, there's nothing like a small car with a big motor. 707 hp Hellcat? Wow! Even if it had drag slicks on it, it'd probably be in the jersey barrier. For some reason, every new high horsepower car I see a video of, Mustang, Challenger, Camaro or Vette, just can't seem to keep it straight on hard acceleration. It's all about horsepower to weight ratio, and traction. 1000 hp doesn't mean shit, if you can't get it to the ground.
I owned a 71 302 Maverick with just a few mods it had L60 14s Posi-trac-ion (anyone remember those tires) and was raised all the way around, it had great weight transfer off the line.
I was actually given one for free an old lady bought it at an auction, had it sitting in her driveway couple months decided she didn't want it anymore, when she asked if I wanted I was reluctant at first when my wife told me about it, unseen I was like, nah I'm good, but then I went ahead and drove to the old lady's house, saw it and fell in love with it, now it's mine, free, lol a 1973 mercury comet, got plans for it now, so I definitely lucked out, body is straight, new tires, plugs, gas tank, shocks. Ran it against '71 318 Cuda, '69 383 Road Runner, '67 390 GTO, '66 Tempest, '63 383 Belvedere (it was a small town). Outran a '73 Vette late one night on I-40 in Oklahoma. Never shamed me. Sold it in '75 because I was now "mature college man". Second biggest regret of my life.
Gone are the days of these muscle cars. Loved the race and I am a diehard Mopar fan. I remember them well. Now we have Toyotas, Nissans, and Mitsubishis. These cars do not compare to these American made classics.
I'm digging old Mavericks lately for some reason. Having a 1400 to 1500 weight advantage kind of helps on launch. Given the distance, this race was over before it started. Had the race been longer, the Hellcat would have eventually freight trained the Maverick. Good race though.
@@66cometman I didn't miss it. A daily driver is a reliable safe and comfortable vehicle that can make a long trip without issues and that Maverick ain't one of those. I don't care if you're a GM, Ford or Mopar guy, That applies to all brands.
@@charlesmarshall2697 why are you trying to skew the definition of a daily driver? It's literally just a vehicle that you drive every day depending on the weather. You also don't know anything about this Maverick other than what my description tells you. You can drive it anywhere you can drive that Hellcat. You're relying on a false premise to make your point. This is just a 1972 muscle car vs. a 2015 muscle car. I'm not saying one is better than the other, just appreciate them for what they are.
@@66cometman Nonsense. I'd make the same argument if it were a Duster with a built high horsepower Mopar small block. You can drive that Hellcat at an 80 MPH cruise from coast to coast in air conditioned comfort with safety features no restomod could ever have. Your Maverick simply cant do that. There is no false premise there!
@@charlesmarshall2697 Ok, so one of them is more comfortable for driving than the other. How does that impact this race in any way? What would you be saying if it were a Tesla racing that Hellcat? Both comfortable to drive, Hellcat still loses the race. That's why I'm not sure what comfort has to do with this race. If this were a quarter mile race then the Hellcat would have beaten the Maverick. But it wasn't, and it didn't. My main complaint is that you would dismiss the race by calling a 350 HP max car a tow it there race car. That's the real nonsense.
That's gotta be the worst reaction time I've ever seen!!! Lol Did the Challenger driver put the car in park, cut it off, and put the keys in his pocket? This is the main issue with "bought" horsepower vs "built" horsepower whether it be a Challenger, Camaro, or Mustang, while almost anyone who can afford one of these cars can buy one, very few actually know how to drive them. Its also hard to out- launch a 4- link and sticky tires. Most of the Hellcats came with pirelli p-zero radials which live up to their name...zero traction. I grew up in the eighties and I love the old school horsepower but some of these new cars I previously mentioned can be lethal with someone who knows what they're doing in them. That Maverick is a cool ass car and it looks like it's well built with its mild "Haha" 351

i got to say man, you have one badass mav'. I have a 71 myself and I am in the process of dropping a 289 hipo engine. How well built up is your 351w? Is it a stock or mild build?
+Alex Vladoianu It's a mild build; bored .030 over, mild cam, headers, aluminum intake, and a 750 cfm Holley carb. Good luck with your build!
+Kaleb Brinegar Thank you
Actual race starts at 3:00.
Does pretty good out of the hole there! What are the specs on your motor? Stroked?
Hey sorry for the late response, it's a 351W bored .030 over with 1969 heads, a lunati voodoo cam, weiand stealth intake, and a 750 holley.
Kaleb Brinegar
no problem! Thanks for the comment! It sure makes that small maverick fly!
T
not bad set up I thought it had a big block ? I'm building another d3ve 429/460 stoker right now the last one was .40 over turned .10 with 10.5:2:1 pop ups with with triple valve springs 10 degree retainers match locks roller stop rockers Wieland 2x4 intake 6" rise with matching 1100 dominators with a 310 Magnum comp cam that was .566 on low and .866 lift on the high side with matching lifters and idle speed of 1350-1550
How much?
Not to bad for a Maverick since the Hellcat costs how much?
Color reminds me of brand new '72 Mercury Comet GT my dad bought me because I made good grades in high school. 302, no A/C, no P/S, no P/B. All 302 ci's went to those poor tires in the rear.
I'm a mopar man all the way, but I choose old school over new school any day. That maverick is badass!!!
That's awesome! I just picked up a Maverick myself. How bad was the T5 swap to do?
+pmmjkl It was not very difficult to do, but mechanically the T5 is the weakest component of the whole drivetrain.
my dad drag raced a mav with a 302 boss it would scare the kids
Dam I got a maverick I feel honored to be driving an old school that can beat a new school . Good shit
I wonder if it had a windsor or a Cleveland?
I remember back in '71 riding on the floor board of a maverick when my sister picked me up at the airport , what a wacko !
Gone are the days of these muscle cars. Loved the race and I am a diehard Mopar fan. I remember them well. Now we have Toyotas, Nissans, and Mitsubishis. These cars do not compare to these American made classics.
THAT MAVERIC TOOK OFF LIKE A JET ON A STEAM CATAPULT !!! HOLARIOUS !!! GREAT JOB.
What Transmission did you use with your 351w?????
+Steven Harden it's a rebuilt T5 out of a Mustang! And probably the weakest component of the whole drivetrain.
+Kaleb Brinegar, Ok still a nice sleeper. I have a 77 maverick.
Old school or No school! 💪😎🏁
La vieja escuela ,simplemente lo mejor de lo mejor👍
did this maverick spend time in prior lake in the early 90's - seems very familiar
THAT'S WHY I LOVE MAVERICKS.
Love It! Thank you!
ya I figure I had a 72 with a 2 barrel and they are quick as he'll for first e blocks so yep just what I thought .
3 blocks lol
I'm digging old Mavericks lately for some reason. Having a 1400 to 1500 weight advantage kind of helps on launch. Given the distance, this race was over before it started. Had the race been longer, the Hellcat would have eventually freight trained the Maverick. Good race though.
I had a Maverick with the 302 in it. I like the Mercury Grabbers to.
I don't care if the Maverick lost I would still want the ford Maverick
What's the point. A tow it there race car vs. a drive it anywhere muscle car?
You must've missed the license plates on the Maverick. It's a daily driver 3 seasons out of the year.
Wonder if the maverick's air conditioning is pretty cold too ?
Duluth MN?
