- The heroic true story of American cyclist Greg LeMond, considered to be one of the greatest cyclists of all time, who defied the odds for one of the most triumphant comeback stories in sporting history.
The first, and only, American to win the Tour de France, LeMond came back from the brink of death to beat his famed rivals in the historic and nail-biting race at the 1989 Tour de France.
Directed by Alex Holmes and featuring exclusive interviews with LeMond and his wife Kathy as well as, never before seen footage, The Last Rider is an exhilarating portrait of one of the greatest athletes of our time.
as a young brit cyclist in the 80s I idolised LeMond, I still do...but as time has gone by I admire him for so much more than simply being a legendary cyclist. . .amazing bloke, a genuine icon.
I know this story inside out in every detail....but I still cant wait for this!
100% the same story for me! Only difference is that i was a young rider from Germany.
Same here man. Born and raised in London. First ever tour I saw was the '85 Tour de France and after seeing what the La Vie Claire team director did to LeMond telling him to "slow down" was infuriating. And I was just a kid. The 1986 Tour was the beginning of me getting into Cycling fully and that Team back then was absolutely overpowered. I too know his story and was absolutely gutted when I heard about the hunting accident. I miss those days. I'll probably get emotional seeing this because of how awesome life was back then. That freedom of going out on the bike for hours was just unrivaled.
Me too.
Right on! Loved the Lemond days. In the states we called him LeMonster. You are so right. A class guy. True cycling hero.
@@howardleckey2089 yeah absolutely Howard!! Time reveals all and beyond the cycling achievements, which were incredible anyway, there was just something about his persona, his character and his spirit, for me he just embodies what is great about genuine sporting icons and how they inspire you throughout the rest of your own life. The battles he overcame and won, the rivalries with the Badger and Fignon, the fight against L.A, there was always an honesty and integrity that I just didn't really get from many other riders...it just made him feel more human, more relatable. Hero.
Can't believe they are finally getting around to making this movie. Big Greg Lemond fan since the 80's. I have 3 Lemond bikes I ride all the time and one is a 1991 Lemond Calfee team Z bike. I'd love to actually meet the man someday. I never understood why Wheaties never put Greg on the cereal box especially after his 1986 tour win. Makes no sense. I still have every Lemond bike catalog from all the years when he started making bikes. Should be a exciting movie. Still my favorite cyclist of all time.
He was my inspiration to start cycling after a motorcycle accident. Thank you, Greg!
About Time!! Thank you Greg for finally getting this made. You are the Greatest American Cyclist! Trail Blazer for American Cycling!!!
"It doesn’t get any easier, you just get faster.” - Greg LeMond
Yes! Love this quote
Soooo true! 🚴♂🚴♂💪💪🚵♂🚵♂
Best cycling quote ever!
It does get easier though.

This is so true..❤
I saw Greg when he was racing at Nevada City he was an intermediate and staying up with the Juniors, outstanding.
Phil Ligget has been there for so mamy amazing moments
And may he be there for many more. The Voice of English Commentary in Cycling. The late Paul Sherwen being the Robin to his Batman.
I was well into racing when Lemond arrived on the international scene. Such an inspiration to this (then) young kid. I even got my hair cut like him in the early 80s, and had my racing bike painted Gitane Blue with yellow Benotto bar tape. A true LEGEND and all around great guy.
Same. Found a way to rig my Dia Compe brakes to run the cables "aero" so my bike could "look" like his. 😅 might have lost a bit of stopping power, but hey, youth don't need no brakes.
@@kaseycarpenter73 😂😂👍
@@kaseycarpenter73 brakes just make you go slower
I vividly remember that bike.
That was certainly a golden era, no lids I think made the riders look so cool
I even saved up from my sat job as a kid to buy Rudy Project shades like Hinault wore 😄😎
I started bike racing in 1980, just as Greg was heading to pro racing in Europe, and being 4 days older than he is, I kind of lived my racing life vicariously via his racing success, as my own abilities limited me to relatively decent amateur status my entire 25 year racing career. Greg is the greatest bike racer the US has ever produced, and I was fortunate enough to see him race in person here in Florida that comeback year of 89.
I remember the first time i saw Greg was in Montreal at the Grand Prix Des Ameriques in 1988, the field blows by i see Steve Bauer, Jean Francois Bernard, Sean Kelly and many others, i was pretty excited to see everybody live. So and im standing there waiting and waiting then all of a sudden he casually rides by talking to this older guy who wasn't even in the race, i said to myself "hey greg lemond!!!" i was star struck to say the least. I know Greg was not on form and knew he was still recovering from his hunting accident the year before. When Greg won the tour in '89 he came back 2 weeks later for the montreal race, he broke away from the field and was all alone for several laps, when he came up the mont royal climb, i was beside myself, i was star struck again and again! 😄Then another 2 weeks later he won the World Championship Road Race, and im happy to say i saw Greg at his best. Those memories will stick with me forever. Even today at 50 when i ride my bike to work i still feel like im Greg Lemond 😊. He will always be my idol. 😊
Talk about being at the right place at the right time. Thanks for sharing.

Was a huge icon when I was younger. His integrity as a person is what helped make him into a legend IMO
GL did a signing event at our shop many years ago. He went far over the scheduled making sure everyone in line got something personal. A good man.
My favourite Tour de France winner of all times!
Greg is a wonderful person. I heard him speak in person several years ago at a bike shop with my son. He autographed posters for each of us. He is a class act. Very kind, very loyal, very truthful.
The first time I watched cycling was highlights of the 89 tdf with my stepdad that Xmas when I was 13. We’d never seen anything like it and I was hooked!
About time he gets a movie like this.
Greg inspired me to ride. I still own a Lemond road bike.
Me too!!!❤❤❤❤❤
Hold on, not only the first American to win the Tour de France! He's the first English speaking man to win. He's also the first person outside the European borders to win.
That's a huge breakthrough that no one said could be done until it happened. That's HUGE! He's truly an amazing person.
That can't be compared to the other guy.
I have read Greg's Life Story.....had a LeMond Roadbike.....Must Watch this ( P.L Voice.....Goosebumps )

Little me waiting for the 15 minutes of coverage we got once a week on Saturday on ABC's Wide World of Sports, and why I loved the sport. That and getting to meet and interview the 7-11 team in 6th grade. These are the memories of cycling I cherish.

Finally a movie actually worth watching
Hell ya, I went to college at UNR and road his loop once in Reno/Tahoe. Loved it. Can’t wait to watch this.
This will be a must see. A true champion and humble to boot. He was the first to break thru in a Europe dominated sport. As American as they get, can’t wait to see it😁🇺🇸
Greg LeMond is an outstanding cyclist, but Kathy LeMond is the true hero in this story.
Their marriage is a relationship goal for me.
Met him in 1988 in Coconut Grove, Miami….a small race….a Giant of a Man…great guy…he was with PDM at the time…
Greg and Kathy are a great team and partnership.
Watching LeMond duke it out with Hinault (and don't forget the exploits of Team 7-Eleven) really ignited my imagination and led me down the road to become a bike racer, and I'm still racing all these years later. I'm going to have to see this film for sure.
Can't wait. Big love for Greg Lemond ❤
My Cycling God then and Now. He’ll always be a ‘Grande’ for me.
Greg LeMond was why I started road racing in '89 or '90. I remember he came to the Arizona Crit Championships in early 90's because he got injured and had to fulfill contractual obligations. I was in awe to actually watch him race.
The real American cycling legend.
Totally my hero! Inspires me to this day.
I am English but was living in France with my French girlfriend in Chambery in 1989 - so got to see both that year's Tour de France and World Cycling Championships. I have nothing but respect and admiration for Greg Lemond and his achievements that year. No big team would touch him due to his injuries from his hunting accident, so he ended up riding the TDF for the relatively small and weak ADR team.
Lemond had little or no support as his team-mates weren't strong enough to protect him - although other American riders such as Andy Hampsten helped out at best they could. As we all know, Lemond managed to beat race leader Laurent Fignon by overhauling more than a minute's deficit in a dramatic last stage time trial. To this day it is still the smallest TDF winning margin [8 seconds].
The WCC road race was equally incredible - it had been blisteringly hot on the previous day [Saturday] only to turn ominously dark and overcast the Sunday of the race. Sure enough, a torrential downpour ensued and led to countless crashes as the riders negotiated the extremely challenging and technical descent section of a brutally hard course. [I know firsthand as I rode it myself!]
By all accounts, Lemond himself crashed but fearful of losing ground on his main rivals [Rooks, Kelly Konyshev, Claveyrolat and his nemesis - Fignon] he rode the last two circuits on a buckled front wheel! Although Konyshev - a frst-year pro - did an astonishing ride, it was Lemond who pulled off the victory by outsprinting the hard-as-nails Russian and the sprint king himself Sean Kelly to complete a wonderful TDF/WC double.
Watching a soaking wet Lemond punch the air as he crossed the winning line - you could physically see he 'wanted it the most'! Nobody was going to beat him that day - nobody. He was determined to prove all his detractors wrong and show that he was still a force to reckoned with. And boy, did he do that! Chapeau Greg.
Greg LeMond, un grand athlète, un immense champion !
Love Greg
Can't wait to see this either. As a young person in the 80's watching snippets of the Tour on ESPN, Wide World of Sports, and reading about it through Velonews, seeing the full story in moving color is going to be amazing. Greg is truly an inspiration.
Amazing story! Must watch.
That ad just worked fine on me. I'm haven't been to films in a few years. I'm seeing this one--on the big screen.
Epic, go Greg!
True stories. In Sacramento, at the parties he would arrive on a bicycle instead of a car. Everything was about bicycles. 😅. Addiction is real.
Yes.....Lemond ...Hinault.... Fignon.....AMAZING WHAT LEMOND DID 👍
This man was a Champion probably the last clean rider to win the Tour & that Time Trial to win by 6secs 1 of the Greatest Individual Feats in History up there with Bannister Sub 4 mile & Hillary & Tenzing

THE American cycling icon!
Legend!
I trained to ride two state championships and a few stage race victories and decent placings in Nationals as a Cat 2 out of Alaska by using his and Eddy's book. It's still my go to 30 years later for sound training and racing advice. He's was my role model (after Merckx) in the 80's.
I'll be amazed if it makes any theaters in America. We don't got crap for cycling coverage anymore.
Amazing rider
Yes please my ultimate hero
Only an American sportsman would get shot in the offseason 😆
incredible film!
When Lemond won in 1986 by 8 secs he could have easily lost. Fignon was v good
But fignon was ready to cheat to win. At perhaps the most critical climbing section in that 86 race, w both racers ready to crack, fignon grabbed and held on to a motorcycle for several secs. Just to catch his breath.
Lemond saw that ploy by fignon.
Some days later, the day b f that famous ending tt, lignin ahead by about 49? Secs, came over to Lemond, tried to psych him out, and congratulated Lemond for a great race.
But Lemond was not psyched out. He thought to himself he says “no buddy, you can’t psych me out, I saw that hold on the motorcycle at a critical climbing point, and thought this race is not over yet. Lemond went on to beat fignon in that last tt, using Boone Lennon tt bars.
Lemond was also a curious person, open minded, willing to try new tech
French not as much
Now, today, what wd a tt be w o aero bars? All from Lemond and Boone.
Winners children now on the podium after wins? That also, started w Lemond
Whoops 89 tour win by 8 secs not 86
The aerobars where used in 1989 Trump Tour bij 7ELEVEN. Also in the timetrial in tdf 1989 Dinard-Rennes for example Andy Hampsten rode with aerobars (started earlier as LeMond). So the story LeMond introduced them is not correct.
@@Jan-df7dl I didn’t say Lemond used them first. I said he used them at tour and only after tour did they become popular
I did say and do understand still that Boone Lennon, a shop guy and a tinkerer, first invented them.
And I also think the earliest version were used by a rider in RAAM
Man, you come right out of a comic book. Fignon kicked Lemonds arse and owned him in the mountains, where the Tour is alway won or lost.
Without the ridiculous ITT as the final stage, Fignon would have deservedly won the '89 TdF. The aero bars weren't even UCI legal at the time.
@@stevecooper7038 You need to watch Stage 16. Fgnon dropped on every climb and lost 13 seconds at the finish. The bars were UCI legal and approved by the UCI officials at the race. And Fignon had a pair that he tested out on the morning of the final TT but decided not to use them.
The end of the 1989 TdF is still in my top three best sporting events. Cycling was still in it's infancy then but I can still reel off Phil Liggett's legendary commentary. And then in 1994, the TdF came to the UK so I dragged my wife and mother-in-law to watch. The peloton whizzed by as expected and I watched them for a few seconds as they disappeared into the distance. And then for some reason, I felt compelled to look from whence they had come and I saw a solitary cyclist struggling. I thought "he's having a tough time and can't be very good" and then I realised it was Greg. I was totally stunned. He abandoned a few days later and his career was over. The only American to win the Tour de France, I love that line.
"Cycling was still in it's infancy" I presume is a joke, Liege Bastogne Liege had been running for almost 100 years before the '89 TdF!

The last clean Tour de France winner for at least 15 years thereafter, he retired instead of doping to stay competitive, it must be said because of the pellets that were left in his body, it would've been very dangerous to dope, but he never doped, so I believe he would've refused to dope regardless.

There was nothing like the amazement of watching Phil Ligget comment on the penultimate time trial. Stating how much Lemond would have to make up (50sec) over the course of a relatively short (?24K) time trial. UNBELIEVEABLE. Fignon with his pony tail flying in the wind ultimately lost. And this was after recovering from being shot.

America's greatest cyclist! Greg LeMond.
Lemond was a wolverine.
I remember watching him win this TDF as an eleven year old - I remember I couldn't understand why Laurent Fignon was crying, his glasses falling off his face as he collapsed on the ground... it inspired a love for cycling in me that exists to this day.
Yeah, Fignon was writ the antagonist over time, but he was a great cyclist in his own right.

Greg LeMond is of my generation of cyclists, and I have massive admiration for him. He was indeed the first American to win the Tour. He is not the only one. If the premise of this doc is that, then it can piss off. Inspiration does not come with dishonesty attached. For those who say look at the record book, I say we all know the reality of things.
What are you on about? Are you referring to a man who took doping to an industrial scale and covered it up through outrageously arrogant bare-faced lying, threats and bullying? And who has shown little true contrition in the aftermath? You need to examine who your heroes are. LOL

Can’t wait for this film! Greg is cycling’s GOAT. (apologies to fans of Mercx). The Broncos 1st Super Bowl win was my all time favorite moment in sports, but Greg’s win in 1989 TdF is a close 2nd. Great competitor and a nice person. Deserves all the accolades. I hope this film will expose him to a new generation of fans who weren’t even alive when he was racing. I know I should let go of old grudges, but I will never buy products from Trek, Oakley or Nike for how they treated Greg after he questioned LA’s results. F#&k you Lance. IKR?
I'd say overall, the American influence on European cycling has been to the detriment of the sport.
Greatest cyclist of all time, he beat two great Tour de France legends, Laurent Fignon and he killed the Badger. Won the tour with a broken team. He got cheated by his team and Hinault. Did a come back after being shot not even Eddy Merckx can claim that. He is such a brilliant cyclist, he knew Armstrong was doping more than decade before Lance was caught.
What is being heavily hinted at but tastefully left unsaid? The cheating, lying, bully that is Lance Armstrong. Bravo, Greg!
The only American *male* to win the Tour de France.
for my first Ironman I rented a LeMond road bike ;-)
I think the title is missing the word clean.
How great is Lemond? In his shortened career, he beat two cycling legends who won their first Tour de France on their first try. Both Hinault and Fignon won on their first attempt. When you do that, you’re automatically ‘legend’. Unfortunately Lemond came in 3rd on his first attempt because he rode through bronchitis. And one of those guys, Fignon, was on his team so he couldn’t ride against him.
What if he didn’t get shot? That would have been 5 straight. What if he didn’t give away the 85 Tour that would have been six tours!
I’ve seen them all and I think he’s the greatest the sport has ever seen but his results show only part of his great potential.
Greg LeMond was a great Cyclist, no doubt about that, but he's not even close to a guy like Eddy Merckx. Even if LeMond had a full career with no injuries, there is no way that he wins 11 Grand Tours like Merckx, or 525 total race wins like Merckx lol. To put things into perspective, Merckx won more races in just 1 season, than LeMond won in his entire career lol, let that sink in for a few minutes. And again, I'm not trying to hate on LeMond, but he's at best, a top 15 rider of all-time, but probably more like top 20 or top 25 in reality.
didnt they already make this movie lol
Nobody can ride a bike like Greg.
Wow
In the past they would talk about some young American cyclist coming up and they would do absolutely nothing

Tounge in cheek. There were no "pure riders" ... everyone took some sort of enhancing substance.
@@TheJaxsonjack If you are going to claim LeMond cheated, you need to provide better evidence than "he was too fast to not be doping".
@@ZipZoomZip What??? You think riders who log 400+ miles per week are doing so with water and protein powder??? C'mon!
@@TheJaxsonjack You don't think an athletic rider can ride 400+ miles/week on just food and water?
