- Lumary sent me some of their recessed lights to try out, and as it turned out I had the perfect spot.
So in this video we discussed what they bring to your smart home, and automate them so they make my Kitchen lighting more usable.

V4.x of localtuya apparently allows you to put your tuya details into the integration then will look up the local key for you. It does a one time lookup when the integration is started to grab all the keys for your devices in the tuya app.
For the switch, maybe hard wire the connection through to the lights and add a shelly type device to monitor the state of the light switch and turn on or off with another automation.
Or just any smart light switch hard wired so it acts more like a scene controller. I did that with a Zemismart smart switch with Hue globes. I hardwired the power to be always on to the globes and just used the on/off of the switch as a scene controller.
Thanks for these great videos. You missed setting Color Mode to 21. Without you cannot switch between color/white modes. Luckily you had another awesome videos showing how to find these that I happened to run across. Also one suggestions on reviews for us power conscious folks, (aka electric companies with $$$ rates) would be to check / compare to other devs. These are around 12W full bright white, 2.5W color, and when off really is just near 0W. Was concerned with the wifi always on. If up for a stretch challenge how well devices works with a dirty generator. That is on my list for next week to see if these really will be my goto CAN lights. I have some just LED bulbs that flicker horribly when on gen.
Excellent, just what I've been looking for, especially with the knowledge I can keep them all local!
Thanks for the in-depth explanations. Automating these peripherals is definitely an intra-system affair. It's awesome that you went into each one. Great to hear of the local aspect of those lights. thumbs up!
Great stuff. I have just set up some Tuya stuff and looking forward to getting them working in Tuya Local. Cheers for the tips!
I’ve been working on my motion activated light automations also, but you pointing out the restart function is most likely my issue, so thanks for that. I’m using the room brightness prior to the motion to choose what brightness to use, so I think it’s restarting and seeing it’s brighter since the light is already on, and so it gets brighter. Not sure if all this, I’m out of town for work, but your video made that aha moment, hopefully correctly.
cool, We'll have to keep an eye out for Matter upgrades for these.
Tuya has said that their platform will have matter support, so while not totally confirmed for these specific lights I think that is good news for any company building products on that platform.
Hello, Jeff, thanks for your videos.
You've forgot to mention two important to me details of the reviewed lights: their communication protocol (Zigbee, Bluetooth, or WiFi) and the way they are affixed to the selling.
Yes I did. So...for anyone that reads these...the lights are wifi. And these are recessed light retro fits. They just slip into existing cans.
@@SlackerLabs Thanks for the quick answer. Do they have a spring-loaded lips to keep them pressed against the drywall of the selling?
Not spring loaded. More like little wings that catch on the can the light socket is in. They probably need to be in a metal can versus just drywall. Lumary does has a version that is meant to be installed in drywall for places where you want a "can light" or recessed light, but dont have the can already there.
@@SlackerLabs Thanks for a long answer, Jeff.
Would love to see the Inovelli smart dimmer switch integrated with this - main reason being dimmer control. I for one do not want to have to get my phone out to do this when I'm working in the kitchen.
Is it just me or are the inovelli switches hard to find? I wanted to grab some but couldn't find any in stock.
Latest HA and LocalTuya these lights do not seem to show at all, anyone else know why? They don't auto detect. I can get them to detect in regular Tuya.
Great video! You can use a smart switch that comes with tasmota on it like the new Moes brand switch, or a sonoff mini flashed with tasmota. Set tasmota to have the relay always on, decouple the switch/button from the relay action and have it just send the button state to HomeAssistant. That way the relay and power to the bulbs is always on. An automation can easily be setup in Home Assistant to turn the lights on and off based on the button/switch state sent. I have this setup and it works great. I have it with a smart switch and a sonoff mini with a regular rocker switch connected. With Tasmota you can have multipress with the button from the smart switch. You can have upt o 5 button presses and a hold making one switch have the ability to have 6 automations or devices/groups/etc controlled based on how many times you press the button. Gets to be a lot to remember "if I press this button 5 times it does this, hold it for this, 3 times for that" but its a nice option.
You can also use a sonoff mini flashed with tasmota and modify a decora style rocker to be a push button. IT depends what you (or your family/spouse) wants to see on the wall. If you don't want the appearance of the smart switch the sonoff mini with a normal light switch or modified decora style is a great option to have the smarts and automation with out showing that it is a smart switch.
That is an awesome idea! I like the idea of repurposing that physical switch for something else.
Just wondering, at 9:34 when setting up local Tuya you gave numbers to enter for various fields. Where/how do you find these values, are they specific to each and every Tuya device? Thanks for your videos.
I am not sure how common they are for each device, although hopefully for other tuya lights I would hope they are common. Some of it you can figure out just by looking at the values for each of those numbers in the drop downs. In my previous video on Local Tuya I walk through how I find the numbers using the Tuya API and a bit of trial and error. Its definitely not something that is easily available. It still pretty much the wild west when it comes to getting your devices setup in local Tuya and gettgin all the features working. I tend to just focus on the features I want to use versus getting the 100% of the device working. Like for lights I just focus on on/off, brightness, and color.
Do the Lumary lights support transitions?
I have found some other branded cheaper lights (both WiFi and ZigBee) don't support transitions and somethimes they will flash brightly in their last state before settling to the state I want them in after that initial burst. Ends up looking like a lightning flash before they settle into the state I want for nigth time use :)
Let me setup a test.
I've installed 3 in my house. Is it possible to group the lights? I can't find the option in the app.
What motion sensor did you use ?
For most of them they are the Aqara motion sensors, or Third Reality's motion sensor. I get good performance out of both.
@@SlackerLabs so with aqara hub and motion sentions what software do you suggest with low profile led lights to work ?
Seemed strange to turn on a 'dark scene' rather than call service turn off group...🤪
Ha. Yea. The truth is sometimes dark doesn’t mean off. Old habits.
Hm. If it's WiFi and you don't control the firmware, it can phone home.
Yep. Pretty much a constant concern with any network based device. But I suspect most people that are concerned about that have it handled at the network level since it isn't just a problem with IoT devices. Or at least I hope that is where they handled it.
Actually not true. You can block certain devices from sending outbound traffic if you have a decent router/firewall
The local still call home.
Yep. Unless you block/restrict your local wifi/network devices all of them, local control or not, can call home or at least communicate with the outside world with out you knowing.
bought lumary bulb, now it doesn't turn on after 2 years, aren't LED supposed to last forever? what the fuck
I’m not sure it’s forever. But I think it’s like 15k hours.
Caseta bruh
Yeah. I will be using a caseta dimmer in my living to control the recessed lights there, and most likely down in the theater. But I dont have a need to split up the room lighting in those spaces. Having all the lights controlled by a single switch is okay. Without rewiring my kitchen lights to split them up, I couldn't split the 9 lights up into functional areas.
Any thoughts on using a Caseta Hub Pro, Caseta dimmers with smart lights? Automation can overcome the switch being turned off (smart bulb power disabled) but the switch also needs to work if the automation if offline. Plus the dimmer does not play well with most smart bulbs. There are other switches that overcome the power being "disabled" or use a Shelly wifi relay but more complex or not are reliable as Caseta. Interested in your approach. Thanks.
