This! A political office such as this is important but we in every country we live in chooses a candidate based on policy not the use of Canestan for a yeast infection for a candidate. If the door opens on this then the next step would then naturally extend to every politician and judge. The next step to follow will be YOUR medical history to obtain a job. The next step would then be DNA testing to exclude you as a candidate because you may be genetically predisposed to an illness thus raising company benefits policy premiums. I work in human resources and honestly I do not wish to see these factors added to candidate selection at my work place. This is a slippery slope. Vote for people based upon policy that is going to give you your best life in your country. It’s about the party not the statin or the HRT replacement your candidate may be taking to improve their quality of life. Once again you have nailed it Dr. P!

I think where it could make sense is during the primary’s where you are choosing between multiple candidates for a parties nominee. But for the final presidential election I agree it’s completely irrelevant at that point.
How about we develop a vast system where millions of eligible people are able to provide their input? We could give them a "due date" for their submission. For the sake of argument, we could make that due date the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November.

Very good points. I would like to know if they are on drugs that have mental or performance side effects that would affect their behavior in a crisis. The classic example might be JFK and the pain medications he was allegedly on. Did these influence, for example, his behavior during the Cuban Missile Crisis? However, even here this was probably a second order effect compared to their basic personality, policies and advisers. And, as you point out, would anyone in November 1960 have changed their vote from Kennedy to Nixon, or vice versa, knowing the medications Kennedy was taking? One place where this might be much more consequential is in the primaries where voters are often choosing between slightly different political philosophies of the candidates but also very highly weight the general election electoral viability of the candidates they are choosing between. But even here the observable general level of energy, intellect and mannerisms of the candidates is more useful than knowing any specific diagnosis.
It’s a case by case question. RBG worked until the day she died - for only political reasons she should’ve retired sooner. With an increases centurions and people focusing on blue zones and Whole Foods plant based diet people are going to be living longer if they still have the energy at 60 more than a morbidly obese 40-year-old that does not have the energy. The healthy 60-year-old should be able to continue to work
The same can be said about Sheila Jackson Lee and Diane Feinstein. Mitch McConnell and so many others in politics that are way past their prime mental capacity. Yet, they continue to run and get elected into office.
Ever since my best friend's personality radically changed after being prescribed benzodiazepines to bring down their blood pressure, have been wondering how many public figures have continuing antu -an ieyy prescriptions. My friend called them their "I Don't Care" pulls and told me a couple of times that BZs would be appropriate for assasins.
I wonder if a certain hospital did that against its older nurses checking their LDL and then started to harass the older nurses with higher cholesterol because of their actuary
If we’re questioning the mental health of a candidate based on their performance, they literally shouldn’t be candidates. I don’t know why we’re even talking about this. Maybe we should stop letting 65+ year olds run for major political office. This is insane.
tell that to Mick Jagger... I know a few 70 y/o that can run leaps around some fat and lazy 30 y/o people, not only phisically but mentally. So I'm not quite sure this would be wise
Trump is a little overweight, but has never drank, smoked or done drugs. That's the only reason he could bounce back up that quickly at his age after being shot at and anyways, you should vote on policy, because if something happens to Trump while in office you'll have J.D Vance who is more than young enough to command. Probably better than ol Tim Walz and I don't know about Mrs Shanahan considering how some Middle Eastern figures think about women but she's got the brains, at least.
If that label has lost any real meaning. Corporate media have weaponized it so much to the point of watering it down. At this point, IMO, it's a huge stamp of approval.
Well, looking at the mess we've been in and the possible mess we're facing now - I don't want medical records, I want medical disqualifiers. A nuclear sub commander is not getting in a sub at all unless he has the IQ, cognition and common sense without signs of neurotic or psychotic tendencies. I don't need to know the results but how about we do the same for the commander of an entire country? Let's do it for congress too - I mean have you seen some of the people there!
We have watched the mainstream media protect Biden to all extents possible. No, they should not be an open book. I think it is okay to ask question, but we have watched those questions being ignored by a certain party, thus they do not have the right to ask questions on the other party.
Biden has a speech impediment. That means when he has asked a question he hast to pause to formulate his answer so he will not stutter, during the debate. It was the responsibilities of the moderator cause that’s why they’re called moderators cause they’re supposed to moderate to stop Trump from lying. They should’ve said, your answer does not possess any factual statements did you want to answer the question? But instead Biden should’ve been accommodated because of his speech impediment had to pause first because it clanged against his morality of Trump‘s lies and immorality his mouth dropped open, which would’ve been OK for a younger person, but you’re not allowed to drop your mouth open when you’re older. and it threw him off. When in our political arena, have you had anyone of the moral turpitude of Donald Trump? Corruption is always been rampant, but this person is a whole new level. What happened to Biden was ageism and ableism you go by what he has done over the last three years, which is more than most younger presidents in two terms. So I disagree with your statement, it was the moderators fault for not stopping Trump. They did not accommodate Biden’s speech impediment. I don’t care if Biden has age and a disability you go by what that person does. How many healthcare providers have known disabled people that create beautiful works? Could he answer that 3 AM call? He already did he’s done more for NATO than any president.
another interesting study since we have two medical schools and two major hospitals in the Bay Area. It would be great to compare the two and find out why you see San Francisco continues to have higher marks with US health report than Stanford. And if that’s true then why isn’t UC San Francisco medical schools practices mandatory throughout the United States? If a hospital is getting better outcomes, true outcomes, not manipulated by computer statistics then that should be the practice. There’s a Bay area hospital that has the highest infection rate throughout the entire Bay Area but they manipulate the statistics to say that the patients are happy. Who in the hell in their right mind is going to say oh yeah I am so happy about that hospital when I left I had a decubitus ulcer MRSA, they gave me pneumonia. I really like being infected. That’s a great hospital. what is the reasoning if a hospital is showing the gold standard that the rest of the medical schools don’t follow that gold standard? Why are we putting out incompetent nurses? I think it’s because the hospitals are not working with the nursing schools to bridge the interim permit with Nursing residencies. After that same meeting that I went to Stanford started a residency program. All hospitals should follow that practice if you want more confident nurses in your area. It doesn’t matter what you research if you don’t have the practitioners carrying them out correctly
Candidates health is another “majoring in the minor” just as fussing about Kamala’s racial identification. The real focus is what is their stance and record on the issues.
I disagree with a couple things. First, you're asking a partisan if they will change their vote, which matters much less than whether it could tip an undecided voter one way or another. That could absolutely have an impact on the election especially with how tight our elections are nowadays. I agree that most of the questions are asinine, but the idea that none or even most of them couldn't impact an election is just silly. Second, you need to go back and look at trump in 2016 and even 2020. I won't say there's necessarily cognitive decline but there is certainly a difference in his energy and the coherence of his speech. A cognitive test could absolutely give more objective evidence of a decline or lack there of, and if there is a decline that could and should lead to concern about a candidates ability to lead (erraticism, negotiations with foreign officials, etc.). I'm going to get a bit more saucy and say you really ought to stick to medicine, public health, and regulation sans overt politics. I used to listen to you religiously, and owe a lot of my understanding of medical evidence to your podcast, but as soon as you start talking about politics, you seem to lose your ability to think rigorously and rationally. This is pretty surprising to me since we have very similar backgrounds: I am also a physician (in training) with an undergraduate degree in philosophy (and less relevant, but still interesting, went to medical school in Chicago).
I dunno man. I've checked out some of his rallies, and I'm not seeing much of a difference. He's slowing down, sure, but he's still got more going on than Biden did in 2020, way more. I kept suffering a kind of trauma watching Biden in decline because I had just been granted legal guardianship of my own father in late 2019, due to dementia. Looking at Biden's decline was a repeat of what I'd gone through with my Dad, and I was horrified that his nasty wife wasn't protecting him by taking over guardianship and removing him from the presidential race. I was equally horrified that the DNC chose to run him. They should have been wiser, but they were power hungry political fools. And yet the Megacorporate Media managed to edit Biden clips in such a way as to make him seem coherent to low information voters, so half the country voted for him. And I'll bet you did, too. You're only looking at the guy you don't like for your own personal reasons. Sure, compared to Harris, Trump is much older, so it's more likely that Harris will outlive Trump, but she's not too bright, as they say. She says stupid, idiotic stuff, and she was never qualified to get into politics on her own. She was installed by her married lover. Adultery is bad enough, both candidates have been guilty of it, but you can't say that any of Donald Trump's partners in adultery did him any favors to put him at the head of his business or at the helm of the country. Plus, he picked the best negotiator to arrange peace in the Middle East, and Biden/Harris/CIA are leading us to all out war everywhere. There's your choice. The guy who had enough respect from world leaders to work towards peace in the Middle East vs the inexperienced political climber who loudly calls for chaos. Your choice. P.S. I wouldn't trust your medical abilities because prejudice drives your opinion. You'll be one of those doctors that dismisses patient complaints because you don't think there's anything wrong with them, entirely based on your own prejudice.
I think your premise that Vice Presidents are so close politically to their Presidential running mate that Presidential candidates' health doesn't matter is just wrong. Policy-wize, JD Vance is much worse to me than Donald Trump. If it turned out that Trump had some health condition that made a Vance Presidency significantly more likely, then I would absolutely be less inclined to vote for that ticket.
Trump had two years Biden had 3 1/2 you go by who got more done as a president not how old they are. You compare a new grad RN with a seasoned older RN whose patients going to do better?
Trash take again by VP. Focus on things like LDL and electrolytes that are irrelevant. I think we’d like to know if a candidate is on Leqembi, Aricept or a BPD/antipsychotic. I’d also like to know if a candidate had cancer cause contrary to what you said vice presidents can be vastly different from presidents; for example, Mike pence
As someone who is beyond frustrated w my job hunt…. How about drug tests for everyone in Congress?
Thank you for your perspective. I had not thought about those points you brought up and they are quite valid.

I recall when Trump did take a cognitive test while he was in office. I will add he did very well on it.

P.S. I wouldn't trust your medical abilities because prejudice drives your opinion. You'll be one of those doctors that dismisses patient complaints because you don't think there's anything wrong with them, entirely based on your own prejudice.
Who cares? He’s not going to live forever anyways.
So you're ok with the policies of Walz?
Trump had two years Biden had 3 1/2 you go by who got more done as a president not how old they are.
You compare a new grad RN with a seasoned older RN whose patients going to do better?

Lol!❤
You make it all laughable these politics😅
They all lie
Health records should be released during the primaries.
The consern is that Trump keeps talking nonsense and bring up how he likes sharks and his good friend Hanible Lecture
You're on crack
Trash take again by VP. Focus on things like LDL and electrolytes that are irrelevant. I think we’d like to know if a candidate is on Leqembi, Aricept or a BPD/antipsychotic. I’d also like to know if a candidate had cancer cause contrary to what you said vice presidents can be vastly different from presidents; for example, Mike pence
As if the majority of voters have a clue about those drugs. Just pay attention to policy.
Thanks
