There was that school shooter recently who was confronted by a teacher who got him to put his gun down for a hug....so maybe some are just so desperate for anyone to notice their pain..a s imple hug could change things...
I'm sorry to hear you feel that way about the lines you don't agree with. They're written to try and get you to think about what is going on on both sides of a tragedy like a school shooting or suicide. You're probably right, the parents of the victims of school shootings probably 99% wouldn't agree, but for the rest of us at least a step removed, the only real way we can stop the cycle of violence is to understand why it's happening in the first place. If it gets to the point where you need teachers with guns, or door blocking devices, or whatever, we've already failed. We need to understand and help the kids who for one reason or another think that this is the answer to whatever they're dealing with. I'm not trying to say that kids should be coddled or hidden away from everything; maybe, for example, what one shooter needed was someone who gave a damn to step in a long time before that and give them some structure. Who knows?
For the "reaching out for love" perspective, check out Jeremy by Pearl Jam. Love thy neighbor, including the ones who turn to violence for attention. You don't have to approve of their choices to understand them.
This is one of those songs that just demands your attention when it comes on. Incredible drums and guitar work, but so serious and dark for the most part. I see the song "Jeremy" by Pearl jam is being suggested to you. My only request is that if you do give "Jeremy" a listen, please find the uncensored version of the video. Only the last few seconds of the it were edited by MTV for reasons they thought were justified, but the impact of the song and video are softened somewhat by the edit. Definitely worth your time though. One final thought: if the youth of our nation were more like you young man, then I truly believe our world will survive the chaos currently enveloping it. Your thoughtful, intelligent reactions to the topics of these songs I've watched you react to give me hope that my grandson will grow up in a better world where faith, hope and love reign supreme over greed, pride and prejudice. Thank you for giving me that.
I could totally see you were NOT expecting this one. Great tune! POD out of my hometown San Diego! They were reaching out for SOMEthing...with unfortunate results. Seems to me the song is about troubled youth and the BS they have to deal with sometimes. Epiphany says....'hurt' people hurt people. I don't think the girl is a prostitute per se but rather a girl who just wants to fit in and hang out with people...to be liked and she resorts to using sex to accomplish that. Gotta love song facts!! Jeremy by Pearl Jam is another song about bullying in school. It's not just about the way kids are treated in school, by each other or staff, it's about society in general....people just don't care anymore. The philosophy "It takes a village to raise a child" died a long time ago. Great reaction!
Unfortunately, this situation never changes. I've been out of school over 3 decades now. I've known girls that fit the mold (we called it Daddy Issues back then), I've had more than one friend kill himself back in my school days and I've known crazies who brought knives and guns to school on a daily basis (luckily none of them started shooting up the place but more than one tried knifing people). My little cousin is 20 yrs younger than me. She's experienced all this herself. Her former boyfriend was a weapons nut, her best friend definitely "tries finding love in all the wrong places" and she had a friend OD just a couple of years ago intentionally. I always hoped we'd see things get better, but they're still the same.
Fabulous song that will always resonate with our children year after year. and adults). It is scary but a good lesson here for us all. I lost my son suddenly at 37. Non the less I talked to him before work and a half hour later he was gone. Huh ur kids and ALWAYS make sure they know how loved they are. SADLY we all struggle to “FIT IN”
I am a Millennial and this song came out when I was in school. It was it was huge and eye opening at the time. It's sad we are still experiencing these things and have barely learned anything after all these years.
I'm a retired high school teacher. (History was my main area.) I found that most of my students were pretty normal people. In fact, their lives were overwhelmingly ordinary, as far as I could tell. School shooters are wildly uncommon among the millions of kids in high school. The kids in my school were (for the most part) pretty good human beings, even if it was really hard to get them to do the reading. :-)
P.O.D P=Payable O=On D=Death P.O.D. A great band spreading the "good news" to an unbelieving world. Their top song was Alive, that came out less then one month before September 11, 2001. Please check out 2 songs off their Testify album called Roots In Stereo and Strength of My Life, not for a reaction just F.Y.E. Its POD(Christianity) and Matisyahu(Judaism) coming together to represent G-D's unity. Kinda like old testament meets new testament. Please enjoy.
POD rocks it, Youth of a Nation, is a powerful, deep look into how life is short and every minute counts. Sad that so many youth are starving for love, to feel like they are someone and not invisible. Thanx Daniel
I actually was listening another commentor when l stumbled across yours. Really appreciate your insight on this song. WHEN you focused on the victims of a persons issues.
So here is my take... from the line “the blind leading the blind”. IMO there are way to many people having children that don’t really know what a healthy family system looks like. Or how to effectively provide for the emotional, mental, physical and spiritual needs of a child. It seems to go on generation after generation. I think the school shooter felt invisible. Ignored and dismissed first by the people closest to him that should have been listening to and validating his thoughts and feelings and teaching him how to express and cope in healthy ways. Then by the peers that perceived him as someone who wasn’t worth acknowledging. Yes millions of people go through the same type of issues growing up ( including myself) and don’t become mass murderers to get noticed. So ultimately I’m placing blame where it belongs, on the shooter!! The 12 year old girl was not unlike millions of others...longing to be loved but not knowing how to love themselves enough to set boundaries. You give me hope for your generation though 👍🏻
It’s hard to sympathize with a mass murderer but you have to acknowledge what lead them to do it and what they lacked or thought they lacked or we will never understand why these things continue to happen. It’s important to think and atleast try to sympathize with a murderer to truly understand their motive so you can see how to prevent it in the future. Though I will say if someone killed someone I loved I would instantly put their thoughts aside and only want to worst for them so it’s just a very hard topic to understand and feel. I hope that was a coherent thought.
I love how you broke down the lyrics, every reaction video that hears "instead of taking the test I took 2 to the chest" they always react with damn! And their eyes get all wide lol
I took from the song that the people who end up taking such extreme measures are still people and not some monsters or caricatures of pure evil. They are often driven to this because they don't see any escape and are depraved of any help. This doesn't mean that the acts in themselves are not still horrible, but the solution to preventing them might be deeper than chastising them. To get too the root of these problems uncomfortable aspects of society and the human psyche have to be talked about and this song unapologetically touches on many of these aspects.
Of course there's those who know why things like this happen. Evil and suffering exist as a symptom of sin. We're all guilty and all need to be saved from it. I'm grateful we serve a loving and graceful God who offers rest and rescue from all sin and suffering as well as justice for every criminal of His law.
I think you missed the point a little. These are the things that we were actually going through at this time. The singer wrote the song. The last verse basically sums it up. Why is this happening? What was the cause? Who knows why this is happening to us? Who is leading us through this mess that is life.
Well, if you're stretching your reactions chronologically beyond Classic Rock, may I suggest "Drown With Me" by Porcupine Tree (The video marked Album quality), the studio version.
P.O.D. is on the short list of explicitly religious modern artists that I, an atheist, can enjoy. (Neal Morse is another). Genuinely great art with a great perspective.

I love that this song cuts through the bs about school shootings, and addresses the ignored darkness in American children. Marilyn Manson phrased it best when he was asked what he would say to the families of the victims and survivors of Columbine: “I wouldn’t say a single word to them, I’d listen to what they have to say. And that’s what no one did.”
