To think that this PC was thrown to the curb over a $1 coin cell battery... though with all that dust inside it, it was probably bound for thermal issues soon. Good save!

I recently had a similar issue with my x79 machine. After pulling it out of storage it wouldn’t turn in at all. I’d get motherboard lights but absolutely nothing would happen when I hit the case or board power button. Interestingly it would power on when I hit the Clear CMOS button, however it would freeze in 00 and show a CPU light. I spent a long time troubleshooting including swapping the GPU, trying different ram, reseating the power connectors, unplugging all the unnecessary devices and nothing. I was getting ready to remove the heatsink to try reseating the cpu, but I had the idea to try replacing the CMOS battery as it had what I believe to be the original. It booted up just fine and worked normally. Interesting thing is that they are both Ivy Bridge machines.

The thin circuit tester screwdriver is the best way to remove the fan from those coolers. Fits perfectly. And to remove the stubborn thermal paste I scrape it off with a plastic spudger first.

Yeah going straight down on the screw through the top hole with a small diameter shaft is much easier,
for really dry DELL/HP CPU Concrete after scraping the lumpy bits I use Electrical Contact & Parts Cleaner, let it soak for a minute & wipes away very easy, at my local Autoshop it's only a couple of bucks for a big can & it's stronger than Alcohol but still safe.

Great intro. I needed a PC in 2007 to process VHS footage of my brother and sister and the folks from 1998 to make DVDs for the 10th anniversary. But I was short of money. So I picked up a PC that had been kicked out to the kerb. It was a Compac Presario Pentium 4 HT. I got the project completed. I prefer to build my own now. UHD drone footage etc. GIGABYTE GA-F2A88XM-DS2 AMD FM2+ AMD GPU and Nvidia hardware processing as a multi-GPU configuration. On the cheap but fast enough. This is a great way to learn PCs as you go. Thanks.

An old friend of mine had left his computer unprotected from when a building team was renovating his house, and the dust from plaster. It looked very much like this.
Also, I suppose you know but didn't have the right screw driver, but it's meant to use a screw driver with a long "shank"? that you put in the hole above and then you can reach the fastener.
I think it's sad how people treat their pc's. Another friend of mine didn't clean it for a couple of years and I was surprised it worked at all. I'm on the other hand like to take on such work.
    Great work man!

I used to build what I called "Theft Proof" PCs. I'd get some grotty old computer then install a newer motherboard and other much nicer parts then sell it. An early one of those I did was in a 1980's WANG PC case. It had a mega sized motherboard where the half with the slots had standard PC/AT mountings but the other half, under the power supply (desktop, not tower) was proprietary with the I/O ports out the rear. A normal baby AT board and power supply went right in and I blocked off the large opening where the ports had been.
IIRC what went into it was either an 80386 40Mhz or some decent 486, most likely a DX2 66Mhz. The outside all looked just like the original WANG 286. I don't remember how much $ I got for it.
What I really wanted to do with the 40Mhz 386 board was get one of the clock doubled 386 pin compatible 486 SX chips and matching FPU that fit the 387 socket but they were rare and $$$$. 30 pin SIMMs would have been a bottleneck.

Machines with suicide batteries suck. I've had plenty of them over the years, including seemingly dead laptops that had flat batteries. Unfortunately for those, the battery was often soldered to some inaccessible area of the logic board, and required near complete disassembly to get to. Replacing said soldered batteries was also an annoyance, since they were tiny little things not even a quarter size of a CR2032.
I usually just solder long wire leads to a battery holder and stuff it inside the memory bay if possible.

Imo there's two routes that u can take with this PC upgrade wise:
    1) Just add a gpu, 1050ti would your best choice here
    2) Swap the CPU for a xeon e3-1230 v2 which is the same as i7-3770 but cheaper and has no Intel graphics and add a GTX 1060 6gb version. The cpu tdp is lower than the i5's, 1060 doesn't draw all that much power either, so your psu should be enough, and yh if u do all this add more ram and fans and maybe try customizing the PC case.

Maybe it was failing because of the broken the front USB connector. Someone tried to change the PSU and when it didn`t worked they trowed the PC away, keeping (or returning) the new PSU.
I have found PCs that after few days outside were as dirty as this on the exterior after a rain, just because the dust adhered to the water droplets and it was quite hard to clean (notice that it was dirty mostly on the bottom part).
Nice PC you found there, mine is a core I3-6100 (found it near a recycle bin) that is very good for light gaming (paired with a GTX1060 an upgraded to 16G and a SSD) and office stuff, browsing and multimedia. Mine was throwed away (my guess) because of the random BSOD (windows 10) caused by the failing 2TB HDD that was inside.

So. Why did both PCs end up on the side of the road in the same place? Is that a dumping spot? When faced with old thermal paste, forget IPA. It's too weak. Get Goo Gone. Or even better, an industrial citrus solvent I can't tell you how to get. The stuff is magic and obliterates thermal paste and grease without hurting anything. I would have gotten the paste off and thrown that cooler in the sink to soak in soapy water. Aluminum and copper heat sinks do not rust. When the dust is caked on, soak it. Run it in a dishwasher if you dare. Let the metal dry. Bake it if in a hurry. Good as new. Fans are cheap. That dusty one was not worth saving. But nice save on the machine as a whole. Pity that one driveway keeps putting out PCs though.

You had an easier time than I am having! I’m trying to get my HP Envy PC up and running again….and noticed that, instead of the four sticks of memory it’s supposed to have, and which it did have the last time I was in there (if I remember, I replaced the CD drive) there are now only three and, during the Test phase (which is as far as I have gotten with it), I keep getting a USB port failure reading - but, as there’s eight of them, and when I plugged both the keyboard and mouse into two of the four on the back, I was able to get that far - but it doesn’t say which one is failing/has failed…and, even weirder, it’s saying that the HDD (a 2TB Seagate Barracuda) has failed, yet that passed the test!😮😮😮😮😮😮😮
It’s started out with Windows 8 on there, but my friend insisted on getting the free Windows 10 upgrade…which I was never really wanting him to do. (He’s one of the “must get now, it’s newer therefore better” side while I’m the “if it’s NOT broke, why change it” side on that.)

When you have a Dell with a missing power supply, get the right part. They are not always standard power supplies in those and they may be some bizarre thing you have never seen in any "normal" computer. In one other UA-cam vid some guy looked inside his Dell and the CPU cooler was not mounted to a bracket on the back of the board. instead some sort of standoffs passed through so the cooler could mount to those. That is a most unusual design. It almost feels like they had a lot of a specific case design left over and thought it would be cheaper to design new motherboards to fit them. Then the front motherboard IO is on the motherboard itself and goes all the way to the front of the case. Another really weird design choice.

I often find office pcs on the side of the road myself too, and often they only lack a component or two, maybe an ssd, dvd drive, power cable, ram, or something like that, but it's easy enough to get those parts, and, a lot of times, they boot perfectly fine, and I personally like to use them as server pcs
I have no idea why perfectly fine pcs are being thrown out, either because they're too slow? (sometimes it might just be the drive that's slow, but, who knows, people that don't know a whole lot about computers might just throw them out BECAUSE their drive was slow), or because something like the monitor wasn't working and they thought they had to throw out the pc as well? I don't know, but I do know that these pcs do often make for good servers, as they're likely to already have a good enough cpu installed, but no gpu at all, which, in many cases, isn't a problem

What? A pc that can't post without a bios battery I can say that I've never seen that. I've had calls where no oS and the floppy drive was left in or the ram wasn't pushed all the way down. A jumper not removed from the board. The PSU the hardrive power switches but never no boot from cmos battery.

use a long screw driver .. poke thru the corner hole adjacent to the screw .. much easier to remove the screw .. ;)

Reminds me of a PC I found on the side of the road, it was on it's side, on the actual road, so I assume it had fallen of a trailer etc.
It was all there and booted straight away. So I wend digging through the HDD to see if I could find any details that would lead me to it's owner, no success, however there were quite a few pictured of it's owner and his wife - however some clothing on their part would have helped....... eek - say no more - gross.
Please don't do this, you never know where it will end up. The computer/whatever gets old and falls into disuse, you forget what's on there and then it ends up somewhere else - like my place.
Or it's still in daily use, but with several scam artists crowded around their screens on the other side of the planet, not believing what they have hacked into, before uploading the lot to a file share site somewhere.

Nice road find. unfortunately even with 8/16gb ram, ssd and windows 10/11 install you won't be able to get more than $50 for it. DDR3 systems just don't hold too much value anymore and even if you add RX 570/GTX 1060 to it you won't be able to sell it for more than $100. trust me, people just don't buy old used computers in US/CA. these 2nd-4th gen i5 computers are given away for free and sell for pennies on classified markets

    • @BudgetBin
      @BudgetBin  Рік тому

I disagree. Depending on what you do to these old PCs, and who you sell them to; it isn't uncommon, (from what I have personally found selling a few computers like this before) for people to buy these old computers with upgrades and stylization thrown into them.
But it is certainly a challenge nonetheless. Unless, you know what you are doing to sell these computers.

@@BudgetBin by the time you spend upgrading it, you already have spent $100 and you can get ddr4 systems with i5 6500 for example for that price, even cheaper. I have been doing it for years, my last pc with i3 2120 and a monitor didnt sell for $40, I gave it away for free which took some time. ebay prices are not accurate for local prices

so you set pc parts out by the road & then make videos as if you found them? what the heck lol. Theres no way the same dude threw out random PC parts, & everything works, & you can just clean it & put it back together HAHA. Not to mention the fact that you've picked up 2 PC's in the exact same spot .. lol. Love the content but god you need to put more work into making it seem realistic.

    • @BudgetBin
      @BudgetBin  Рік тому +2

I understand the skepticism, but the truth of the matter is I'm just filming them in the same spot near one of my driveway lol. I found the first gaming PC in my neighborhood on a run and there is a pic of me even carrying it up a hill that was snapped of me when I asked someone to come help me take it to my house last year if you really want the proof. (Join the discord and I'll post it)
I'm not going to film on someone's property or their business as I respect there privacy and the law. But if you don't believe me, fine. I'm still glad you enjoyed the videos.
Also, why would I go out of my way to disassemble PC's, put them on "the side of the road", and then cover them in caked on dirt that took probably years to form, to then film for... what? I don't even make money doing this lol.

Mom: we have JerryRigEverything at home
    JerryRigEverything at home: this channel.
Pro tip: get a hole saw big enough to put a 120 or 92mm fan behind, I do this to pretty much all of these home office PCs. (It works great on the plastic panel, but you do need something that can cut a hole in the metal case too, like an angle grinder with a thin harbor freight cut-off wheel. If this loses the power button I use one of those metal buttons with the LED in it from Al1Expr3ss
If you have 3rd or 4th gen get yourself a Xeon E3 v2 or v3. 1245v2 was $18 for me and its faster than the i7 (my multi-core CPU-z run actually just barely beat a 7600K). But routinely some good deals like 1231v3 for $6-12 (4th Gen, no iGPU)
