    • @evren1079
      @evren1079 8 місяців тому +27

      Same, but even if you know it's unloaded 100%, it's a habit thing. Get used to looking down the barrel and eventually you may do it when you thought you were 100% sure, and that's that. They should've cut that part from the video as a lot of younger potential gun owners and enthusiasts watch these channels and we certainly don't want them thinking they should be doing this because professionals on UA-cam, in their eyes, did it before.

    • @aserta
      @aserta 4 місяці тому

      Yeah, but the heat issue wouldn't make this a viable concept and its obscurity likely saved a lot of people. This video alone shows the dangers of ammunition that's functioned in this way. The round itself, performed to its spec, the actual gun? That's a no from me dawg. I would not handle that thing with a ten foot pole. There's plenty of ways to get up and close to finger loss, this ain't worth it.

    Small Arms Review did a fairly comprehensive article on the Gyrojet story and its developer Richard Mainhardt some years ago. Taofledermaus did what's probably the single best recent test firing of the Gyrojet pistol and carbine a few years ago. Backyard Ballistics in Italy tried recreating the rockets on a larger scale a few years ago as well, with some success. There were at least a few snub versions of the pistol made, and some select fire versions of both pistol and carbine. At least one pistol was used in combat in Vietnam, and was reportedly effective. They've also been fired underwater. That's all covered in the Small Arms Review report from the early 2000s.
    Addition: looks like all of the reported Gyrojet problems surfaced. Misfires, variable velocities, sometimes wild inaccuracy, and maximum velocity isn't reached until some distance from the gun. Before which velocity can be very low and the rocket is easily deflected. Even when new, performance of the little Gyrojet rockets was somewhat erratic. I believe it's been determined that the propellent was a single formed grain of Bullseye smokeless powder wrapped in flash paper. There seems to have been another one or two unknown secret components of the ammunition to increase immediate acceleration from the launcher.

      They have a use, just the reliability of the rounds is the problem. They are designed to fire underwater and in space. Underwater they do better than conventional bullets, but not much is great underwater. In space though they help with Newton's third law of motion. "If two bodies exert forces on each other, these forces have the same magnitude but opposite directions". Basically in space a light machine gun is also a great way to do somersaults backwards when fired. You have mass, but no gravity to align you to the ground. So 5.56 at 1200 foot pounds of force going forward also means that going backwards, enough to push a 250 pound man back a few inches a second.

    Known about this gun for awhile but you are right Ive never seen it shot. I only heard the ammo was bad and inaccurate but cool to see. Looks like the description was on par. Can definitely see why they terminated the project. Very cool to see it working though and the slow mo was perfect. One for the history books.

    Thanks to Joel for making this video possible. Back in the 70’s/80’s my dad owned and resold several Gyrojet pistols and rifles. He also knew the inventor and founder of MB Associates that manufactured the Gyrojet. They were located in San Ramon here in the SF Bay Area. Unfortunately he never kept any of the guns and as much as I want one myself, it’s tough to justify since the prices have literally shot to the moon. I do still have a modest collection of rounds though, including several different types of “nozzles”. Weapons for use in space were a genuine concern during the space race, yet fortunately were never needed. Or at least we never heard about it. LOL!!

      With specs and the correct molds, I'd imagine you could get the price down, but if they're hard to manufacture, that's a different story.

      @@embershanerox7529 with modern tech we should be able to run computer simulations for more reliable burn and flight characteristics, we have more reliable propellant mixtures and we can manufacture those rounds to much tighter tolerances and with higher reliability than back in the '50s. We should also be able to develop a more reliable launch platform, especially since it would only need a feed mechanism but no extractor.

      If people are willing to fire $200 "bullets", even quarter of the price would see the use of these skyrocket... *badumts*
      Bring it down to 1/10 or $20 per "bullet" and people are lining up to fire these! Considering it's unique in the world, it's worth the price!

      Not to be an old man but machining back then was already extremely accurate. The issue is economy of scale. Making a ton of rounds accurately is very difficult. It's possible that modern technology could make them more cheaply, but honestly probably not much better
