Favour for a Neighbour - Making DIY Fence Panels
Вставка
- Опубліковано 9 лют 2025
- In this video, I build custom DIY fence panels for a neighbour using only materials I already had, keeping costs to an absolute minimum while still achieving a high-quality finish. As a DIY enthusiast and woodworker, I believe that if we have the skills, we should look out for those around us and lend a hand where we can.
This project came with its fair share of challenges! The existing concrete fence posts were quite uneven, so I had to come up with a creative installation method to make everything fit securely. On top of that if you're new to the channel, I only work with one functioning arm and hand, so I’m always finding unique solutions to complete projects independently.
Whether you’re into woodworking, DIY projects, or simply believe in helping your community, I hope this video inspires you to put your skills to good use! Let me know in the comments-have you ever helped a neighbour with a DIY project?
🔨 Don’t forget to like, comment, and subscribe for more DIY builds and woodworking projects! As ever, thank you so much for your continued support in my disability woodworking adventures. Best Wishes, Leo Winstanley

How you use clamps one handed is massively impressive.
Thank you 😀😀👍👍
@@torque9889 it definitely takes some practice and patience especially for the F clamps horizontally.
That looks sharp!
Thank you 😀😀👍👍
@@Hand-i-Craftbtw, @1:15 I couldn't help but think of Mark Williams on the Fast Show and half expected you to say "today, I will mostly be making a fence!"!
@ 😂😂😂😂😂👍👍👍👍
What a cracking job Leo. Like you say looks way better and will last way longer than any off the shelf fence panel. Those concrete posts are notorious for getting out of square over time, so as you found, it would have been impossible to just drop in ready made panels anyway. I once witnessed my neighbour trying to force a Wickes fence panel into an out of square gap. By the time he’d pounded it to death with a lump hammer, there was hardly any panel left 😂
@@MrBigMalT Thanks Mal. Yes have to say I witnessed something similar a few years ago. Reminded me of Basil Fawlty taking a tree branch to his car 😂😂😂
Leo. Great job mate. I did the same today. A good mate of mine is going through a rough time with a marriage break up. In the process of selling the house, his fence blew down.
“How much do I owe you?” He asks. I told him not to be silly. It’s a Great feeling being able to help a friend out in his hour of need.
No pics as it was Peeing it down ☹️🤣
@@eldoradocraftsman3733 Thanks Ash and well said pal, sometimes we don’t even need asking 👍😀❤️
Excellent job Leo
@@stuffbyneilsmith Cheers Neil, appreciate it pal 😀😀👍👍
They are going to want the old panels replaced too, as yours look way better. How you managed to do this with one hand is inspiring!! great video.
@@StuffIMade Thanks Geoff, appreciate it pal. Really happy with how they turned out😀👍
You did a good job
@@vernsteinbrecker3759 Cheers Vern 👍👍
Very nice work
@@ianblackman2144 Thanks Ian 😀👍
Lovely job. Sometimes helping someone that needs it is far more rewarding than money.
@@TheWardagh Well said pal ❤️😀👍
Great job Leo. I hope the neighbour was suitably impressed!
@@mandyleeson1 Thanks Mandy and yes very happy 😀😀👍👍
Great work there.

That really was a good 10 minutes viewing mate. Nice one.

Great job 👍

Great job looks dead smart.
@@projectrebuild908 Cheers Paul, means a lot pal 😀👍
Thanks Leo, and bless you for helping a neighbour out, when our fencing was replaced our very old and experienced contractor apologised for the quality of panels and said "it's on a par with pallet wood" ! Like all timber fence panels are now a crazy price for the quality of timber and it makes fabricating a panel reasonable if you can source decent timber at a reasonable cost !
@@andyc972 Thanks Andy, yes pal couldn’t help but notice recently how crazy panel prices are and they would be useless for something like this due to the posts being out of square 😂
Nice one Leo.
@@ASCarvings Cheers pal, much appreciated 😀👍
The finished panels look great.
Thanks Norman, very happy with how they turned out 👍
Hi Leo, good to see you, brilliant job on the fence repair looks good as new mate, As always a great video, catch you soon take care

You're a champ, Leo. Well done!

When a woodworker makes a fence! That ain't going anywhere and I'd appreciate the layout of the screws if I was walking past!
@@ChrisFranklyn Thanks Chris, a cursory nod to the aligned fixings is the woodworkers equivalent to the secret handshake of the masons 😂😂😂
Good effort buddy, looks great and will last many years. Top work. 👍🏽
@@nigelgarnham1573 Cheers Nigel, much appreciated 😀👍
👍👍👍. Top job. Thank you Leo
Cheers Pete, appreciate it pal 👍
Nice job Leo👍😊
Cheers George 👍
Hi mate, hope you’re well. Cracking job on that mate, not sure if you did this off camera but ideally they could do with either a central timber down the back or an L bracket to fix that lowest timber to the gravel board just to stop the middle sagging over time. 6ft is quite a big span for thin timber. You’ll probably remember the video that Proper DIY posted a while back for replacing his fence and how the bushes had pushed the bottom off the gravel board then everything sagged.
@@scott1armedcarpenter Cheers for the heads up pal, I’ll add an additional timber down the middle on the back 😀😀👍👍
@ no worries mate. That’s what our maker community is all about. Are you doing Maker’s Central this year?
@ Hoping to be there pal👍. Just got to make sure I’m ok with it on the finance side of stuff 👍👍
Fair play to you Leo. A very tasty job ,better than me with two hands and sausages for fingers. You Know you'll have to do the rest of the fence now so it will match.😄 Yep, I;m that that too.
I read your story on your site, and the short term stuff is possibly from the meds. I am on stuff for a condition called Myasthenia Gravis. Quite rare and they told me there were about 700 people in Ireland where I'm from diagnosed with it and about 1,600 in the UK. Basically the nerve signal dosent transmit fully to the muscle leaving you weak. Its the body's immune system attacking itself.
Because of the meds as you probably know you can be limited to what other meds you can take.
I had a lot of back pain which was thought to be sciatica. My GP eventually decided after all the clear scans to have my hips X Ray'd.
I needed new hips. The consultant , top man he was too said; hip pain in a lot of cases is thought to be sciatica and yes pain will cause brain fog as it disturbs your train of thought. One patient he said was on anti-depressants till the hip was replaced the pain was that bad. Didn't need them afterward. The pain is gone the moment you wake up. Brilliant. My fog has improved but the age related fog is still there. 😄
Another thing. Did the medical people ever mention having a Neuro Simulator for pain control? My wife had a bad twist and fall about ten years back and suffered a lot of pain in the lower back. she had one fitted on a trial basis and it worked. So she got a full implant. A matchbox sized control unit under the skin and two wires to her nerves on the spine. She charges by induction and can adjust the levels as needed. She has discomfort now and a lot less pain.
Keep chipping away, it can only get better.
Thanks for the comment and I’ve replied to this one in your other comment 😀😀👍👍
Wow what a mess to begin with, great job looks great
It had certainly seen better days pal, looks much nicer now though 😀👍
Top job that ! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
@@lobbylobbster Cheers Pete😀😀👍👍
Job well done
@@eddyflynn213 Cheers Eddy, really happy with how it turned out 😀👍
I just noticed your clip on the spinal cord stimulator. I only just subscribed. 🙄🙄😄
Thanks for the two comments. Yes I had the permanent SCS fitted about 18 months ago. Certainly has helped me to manage the chronic pain much better. As I said in the video, the nerve pain has been much more debilitating than the functional loss of what was my dominant right arm and hand. That’s how bad pain affects folk. Thank you for sharing your experiences in the other comment and thanks for subscribing, best wishes, Leo 😀👍
Leo, that looks amazing, I'm sure your neighbour is well chuffed. Wouldn't it have been easier to have a drill and separate driver?
@@markduggan3451 Thanks Mark, appreciate it pal. Yes mate I used my combi drill to drill the countersink holes but that was the bit I forgot to film. The bit of footage I did have was the impact driver driving the fixings in 👍👍
Good luck to anyone ( folk ) who thinks they will slip out them panels and just replace them 😅😅
🤔😂😂😂
6:20 I Disagree!! This step is 100% necesseay!!
Cheers pal, it does look so much neater when they are all in line 😀👍
Brilliant job Leo looks like it'll last my concern though should there not have been a Shadow gap between each slat let some air through?? 🫡🏴👍
@@michaelwillson6847 Cheers pal and it’ll be interesting to see how it copes. One thing I will say is the treated timber was bone dry when I fitted it so I’ll be monitoring the situation 👍🤞
@@Hand-i-Craft one thing I have learnt from the fence I put up I didn't gap mine and runs the same orientation as the pannels you did but I used recycled plastic posts so they do move I fear with some strong winds though could be problematic. 🤞 Works out ok. Hope your good mate speak soon 🏴🫡
