i was sooooo glad that Tal got that role XD
Reminded me of a running joke in the hilarious short series Humans & Households from ZOE. In that series, fantasy characters in a D&D world meet for game night and play a RPG in which they are mundane characters in the real world (without knowing much about it). The rogue plays a hacker and has no idea what computers or electronics are, so he constantly tries using his "hacking" skill on things that definitely can't be hacked. The reoccuring catch-phrase "hacking doesn't work that way!" kept playing in my memory when watching Taliesins shenannigans.
Taliesin in every game: I'm gonna take this stupid ability and use it so well that the whole damn game hinges on its application
Could have removed the hacker role and put something else in for her one-shot, but by not doing so she gave Taliesin exactly the ammunition he needed for his character arc.
When life gets you down, just remember; we live in a world where a quintet of grown-ass men can sit around a table, wear ridiculous hats, pretend to be four bears and a honey badger trying to pull off a great honey caper, and go on a wacky adventure with one of the grown-ass men's new wife at the helm.

Just love Matt always played Trinket as this really docile relaxed bear to Vex, and once she's away he's plotting heists and all cool. Always loved the face he made when doing trinket, so adorable.

when Matt flicked that cigarette after they scared those kids, his "nononono!" reaction is of a man that was so caught up in being a player her forgot that there are consequences for your actions.

Yeah, that was great. And also factually true. Bears can get away with poking a hornet's nest, but not this (or any) level 20 war cleric, even if she's without her armor and weapons.
OTOH, Pike probably loves animals like most of Ashley's characters do. If a bear tried to eat her, she'd probably have fun wrestling it into submission. If she had her gauntlets of ogre power on, her Str score (19) matches a bear's, and she's proficient in Athletics for a +10. Or +7 without her gauntlets which is still plenty.
But if a bear tried to steal from her, then mama Pike would have to teach a lesson. Which might start with Guiding Bolt up da butt, Spiritual Weapon, or Flame strike. Or Hold Monster if they're lucky.
Even without spells, she can grab a stick or any improvised weapon and make 2 attacks per round (with action + bonus because war cleric) for 2 chances to hit bear AC11 and do 2d8 extra weapon damage (divine strike). Actually that works with unarmed strikes, too, so she can literally punch bears into submission with the divine power of her bare fists.
For defense, she's resistant to bludgeon/piercing/slashing from non-magical attacks (level 17 war cleric: Avatar of Battle) and has 172 HP, so even in street clothes she would have no problem surviving several rounds of 4 bears attacking her even without casting Heal.
And Trinket's seen how she typically deals with enemies (who usually weren't furry animals.)
In terms of how this translates to Honey Heist mechanics, falling off a cliff might not kill bears, but sufficiently angering Pike might! Or at least put you into full bear after a round or two.
I just started watching this again for funsies after catching up on Campaign 2, and the whiplash of watching Liam play Cookie immediately after watching Liam play Caleb is something else.
Cookie gets more in Honey Heist 2 with Liam Las Vegas as he can do pair acts with the honey badger then :P

The best thing about it is she apparently improv'd it on the spot, since as she said, she spent over 500 hours playing with Laura at this point, so she knows Vex's mannerisms backwards and forwards.

That reminds me of our home game. Our thing is that we HATE WELLS. We went to the store (later dubbed “the boom boom shop”) and met one of our favorite npcs named Boom Boom man. I thought it would be and the first time I DM'd I was pretty nervous but as soon as I started my first time I was suprised by how comfortable I was at it. I do it all the time now and have a blast. I may just be a natural at it because everyone besides my regular DM who has tried it would agree with you that it is terrifying.

I'd like to appreciate how at the beginning of the video Marisha looks like she wants to hide behind the DM screen.

Now I can think in retrospect that for every time Vex missed her hunters mark I can hear trinket yelling "Hunters Mark!". Hahah great episode. So good.

Did anybody else hear the Ralph Wiggum "I'm in danger!" meme play through Matt's head when Cookie and Waffle were trying to convince Trinket to leave Vex for a life of crime, knowing that Laura was probably watching?
Why do I feel like that this should just be Keyleth following around a bunch of bears and using speak with animals to ask them what they want to do as the roam the town?
And thier magic items are just normal stuff that keylith just uses druid powers to make the effects.
My favorite theory that someone had is that this is what Keyleth did because she didn't want to play Bunions and Flagons with Grog. which is also why Grog killed off Keyleth in the opening ;)

I underestimated Marisha as a DM, this was fantastic and enjoyable! She had a story, cool improv moments, props and even special voices. It was a great game and I'm looking forward to any future ones she might do!

Little known fact - Mercer was originally cast to play Zarya's bear, back when she was supposed to ride a bear and wield AK-47s, and pull out AK-47s as her ultimate.

Trinket is a Ranger's Pet, those have a permanent boost to Intelligence stat - and he's 2 points INT better than regular bear.

Narratively sure, of course Trinket is smarter, and better at language in order to understand Vex. (Plus I'm sure it helps to have communicated with people via Speak with Animals, as a way to confirm understanding of their speech in Common.)
But mechanically Vex started in 4e then Pathfinder, but the Vex + Trinket we know use the vanilla PHB ranger class, which gives Trinket a boost to his max HP (setting it to 13x 4 = 52 since Vex is a 13th level ranger; That's not a bonus it's an alternate total, whichever is higher.)
And a bonus to any skills and saves Trinket was already proficient in (adding Vex's proficiency bonus, +6).
Also Vex's +6 proficiency to Trinket's AC, attack rolls, and damage rolls.
Mechanically, 5e ranger companions are supposed to be CR1/4 at most, and Medium or smaller. So Trinket's already outside those limits if they're using Black Bear (CR1/2) or Brown Bear (CR1) stats from the monster manual. Those are both proficient in Perception but no other skills. So Trinket has +9 perception (like a mid-level Caduceus), vs. a normal bear having +3. (The base HP of those bears are 19 and 34, so the HP boost is not that huge.)
The Tal'Dorei Campaign Setting Reborn book has a statblock for Trinket, though:
He has an INT score of 5, vs. 2 for standard bears. His "race" is Brown Bear. I think his intelligence comes from his upbringing, being raised by Vex since he was a cub.
Languages: understands Common but can't speak it
According to that statblock, the benefit he gets from being Vex's ranger companion is:
> Chosen Companion. Trinket has an additional 10 hit points, and has a +6 bonus to attack and damage rolls and to Wisdom (Perception) checks.
So that's odd, his stats don't quite match the standard 5e calculation even apart from the Int score. Trinket has 61 HP (6d10 + 18 + 10) rather than a brown bear's (4d10 + 12).
Maybe Matt homebrewed some stuff because Ranger companions scale poorly, especially when you multi-class. (The +18 vs. +12 is the +3 Con mod times the number of hit dice: trinket is "higher level" (more HD) than a standard brown bear.)
Ah I see the impact on some other stuff now; Trinket's own proficiency bonus is +3 instead of +2, from being 6th "level" (6 HD) instead of 4, so his Perception and hit bonuses are higher by 1 more than you'd get from adding Vex's +6 to a standard bear. Trinket's Perception is +10, for a passive of 20. Or 25 on smell since bears have advantage on smell perception.
Other than INT, Trinket's ability scores are the same as a standard Brown Bear. (Trinket has 19 / 10 / 16 physical, 5 / 13 / 7 mental.)
Trinket's AC is 18 from plate barding, rather than 11+6 = 17 he'd have just from being a ranger companion. (I guess Matt figured it would be OP and not fit the narrative to have the +6 bonus apply on top of Trinket's barding? Because AC24 would be high enough to matter sometimes even against CR20 enemies.)

Now THIS is the type quality content I subscribe to see.
No but seriously. I loved this episode because of its strange yet kind of perfect mix of comedy and action. We had puns, we had ninjas, we had NPC cameos, PC cameos, a Korean game show segment, GROG HUGGED A FUCKING PANDA. We even got a Michael Bay style explosion. AND the cherry on top? IT WAS CANON. In a way, it almost feels like the rare better sequel of "Consequences and Cows". It gave me that Anime Filler feel, but like...a good filler. The one that you are sort of happy exists because it's just THAT FUNNY.
I don't know about you guys, but I want to see Marisha run more of these types of games. Her sense of humor feeds my dark dark soul, and as one FB comment adequately put it: "This episode cured my depression, cleared my pores, watered my plants and gave me telekinetic powers."
