This song brings back so many great childhood memories from the 70s! Although I am African-American, I grew up in a multicultural community where Celia Cruz's music pumped from the speakers in the windows of my neighbors. And no matter who you were or where you were from, if you were in the neighborhood, you knew the lyrics! I was always fascinated by Celia Cruz and her fabulous wardrobe and beautiful smile! I also loved how she embraced her African heritage through her music. Because of her, visiting Cuba is on my bucket list! An icon and legend.......Azucar!
Oh... Mamma Mia...🙏❤️ I was little girl ...who born in Russia...in the end of the World... Pacific ocean cost...In my memory ...I see... amazing pictures of happiness...My oldest brother with his friends playing on guitars and singing this song...So miss...so miss this moments... forever...Never forget...
I remember when I was kid growing up in Miami in the 70's, when a gang of ten year olds could ride their spider bikes all the way to Matheson Hammock, spend the day at the beach, eat a hot dog, soda and bag of chips for like 1.50, then ride home before the street lights came on ... we were quite a posse; Irish, Jewish, Cuban, Italian and P-Rican all riding 'dirty' with playing cards clothes pinned to the spokes flapping along singing "One ton Tomatooooo" ... good times. I should write a book.
You should do a Video or Movie of your time growing up in Miami in the 70's as a kid amigo. Its a great story pal. And would make a great screen play. Contact Andy Garcia in Los Angeles,. He would love your project and probably back it. Guantanamera amigo!
I lived in Coral Gables in the 70s then became a Key Rat in the 80s. loved that bike trail (complete with bike-crushed blue crabs on the asphalt) to Matheson. You gave me a great "walk" down memory lane. Thanks!
Yo creo q hasta el dia de hoy no existe ni existira alguien con el talento q tenia esa gran mujer q era celia cruz saludos desde monterrey nuevo leon mexico
This song makes me feel good, and brings back memories from childhood. I grew up in Venice CA and all of the kids in the neighborhood played together. I remember hearing this song, being played often amongst neighbors, as if it were the backdrop in sound for us, the children playing together. Very heartwarming.❤
Cubans are passionate about food music and dancing. It's what makes them one of most famous Latin music of all time especially in the 30s to 60s. I love Celia Cruz. She expressed the beauty of Cuba through her music.
Wow im from the Caribbean and heard this song years ago.. too many and I've always thought it said "One dollar melon, papito, one dollar melon lolz.. glad to have found this and understand it now...
I used to work in a spanish restaurant that played this song. Myself, being unable to speak even the slightest bit of spanish, would substitute "One dollar melon... Why eat a one dollar melon" for the lyrics. Still have no idea what it's saying. Love this track.
Similar experience. Back in the mid 80's I was in a restaurant with some friends when we were all hearing this song for the first time. None of us were Spanish speaking so to us it sounded like, "One ton tomato. I need a one ton tomato." As the years passed I lived in Mexico for short while and traveled extensively in Mexico and Central America, slowly and eventually acquiring maybe 50 % fluency in Spanish. But I'll always refer to this as the "One ton tomato" song, and it will always be one of my favorites with Spanish lyrics.
Because Cuba was on the side of Freedom there, while Ronald Reagan supported the apartheid regime - He would've loved to emulate that if he could get away with it.
A TRUE CUBAN QUEEN WHEN IT COME TO HER MUSIC THE LATE AND GREAT MRS. CEILA CRUZ I LOVE THIS SONG ALSO FROM MAMBO KINGS SOUNDTRACK DIDN'T GET TO SEE THE MOVIE

I was listening to wyclef because his song was one of my favorite songs ever. Decided to see what the “original” sounded like. So yea, I’m here because of wyclef. Music = universal language.
My wife and I danced to this great song in Havana under the stars last month. Just life changing. I love Cuba and the Cuban people. This Gringo will be seeing you again soon Cuba. Cuba Mi Encanta !
Why does this song always send chills down my spine? Its like if a memory from another time, from another body, before the reincarnation into my current body, spirit, and soul is trying to reach out to me.
VIVA CELIA CRU, LA MÁS GRANDE CANTANTE DE MUSICA CUBANA DE TODOS LOS TIEMPOS...VIVA CUBA LIBRE Y ABAJO LA TIRANÍA CASTRISTA...PATRIA Y VIDA NY LIBERTAD
I think we can all agree that this is the most popular and most iconic version of the song. So iconic that we at some point thought it was Celia's original song and not a cover. 😅❤
A beautiful voice accompanied by a beautiful person. Celia Cruz was a beautiful singer. Sadly she died not knowing what a free Cuba would be like. I'm a Cuban American and sadly I too will die before Cuba goes Democratic like this great country of ours.
Despite the fact that the Grumps introduced a few people to this song, I must say that Celia Cruz was such a beautiful iconic queen and gift to us all. Her voice is always so lovely to listen to. So welcome lovelies to a beautiful Cuban song by a wonderful queen(:
Meletulu Tatafu correct! I just wanted to highlight how talented she was as a Latin artist. She was an absolute gift to pretty much all of us Latinx peeps(: and any other non Latinx peeps who also knew about her.

Don't know why this popped up in my feed and only clicked on it because I saw the still-shot and thought "holy crap, I've stayed in that hotel". A few years ago now but this really brought back some great memories.
Never heard the song before -- had to look it up, cause I had no idea what the Grumps were talking about. Now I gotta wonder how many of the views are from my fellow Lovelies.

as a Peruvian, i absolutely love this song! Celia's voice is perfect for this song, and i love the pride she has for her country.

My dad always listened to Celia when I was growing up. He taught me how to dance to these songs.
Mi abuelo Juan Juárez Moya cantaba esta canción con su guitarra en el Distrito Federal porque Cuba le heredó su música a Mexico, Gracias!

GUAN-TANAMERA!
Guanjira, Guantanamera!
GUAN-TANAMERAAAAA
GUANJIRA GUANTANAMERAAAAAA! xD
Yo soy un hombre sincero
De donde crece la palma
Y antes de morirme quiero
Echar mis versos del alma
Guantanamera, guajira Guantanamera
Mi verso es de un verde claro
Y de un carmín encendido
Mi verso es un ciervo herido
Que busca en el monte amparo
Guantanamera, guajira Guantanamera
Cultivo una rosa blanca
En julio como en enero
PARA el amigo sincero
Que me da su mano franca
Guantanamera, guajira Guantanamera
Con los pobres de la tierra
Quiero yo mi suerte echar
El arroyo de la sierra
Me complace más que el mar
Guantanamera, guajira Guantanamera
Guantanamera in English
I am a truthful man
From where the palm tree grows
And before dying I want
To let out the verses of my soul
My verse is light green
And it is flaming red
My verse is a wounded stag
Who seeks refuge on the mountain
I grow a white rose
In July just as in January
For the honest friend
Who gives me his OPEN hand
With the poor people of the earth
I want to cast my lot
The brook of the mountains
Gives me more pleasure than the sea
Thank you!
I’m pretty sure sincero means sincere lol . Close tho

Daniel Max Yetnikoff This version is included on the soundtrack to the movie 'The Mambo Kings'.
It is a Spanish classic that everyone loves. You can actually improvise and make up your own lyrics - in the stances. Beautifull song.
No need to make up anything and ruin perfection. Simply learn the lyrics.🤷🏿♀️
Not Spanish...this is 100% Cuban! 🇨🇺🇨🇺🇨🇺
