I don't understand why these backfiring practices were kept for so long... there was also a custom in austro-hungarian empire (at least there) that prevented military-like occupations (not only soldiers, but also guards, gamekeepers etc.) from getting married until some degree of income, which meant they had to wait until they were even almost 40. This was intended to protect their families and ensure stable income. But what actually happened was that they of course had families, but were not married, so it even made the life of their children (and partner) much worse, because these occupations were also quite dangerous, meaning that the father could have died before he was allowed to marry and legitimize his children (and provide some kind of compensation due to being harmed while in service). I saw these cases many times, the children sometimes listed their father in censuses and their marriage records, even though it was "illegal" when they were not legitimate. I've also seen a case when a daughter of such couple married aged 18 and her parents married about a year AFTER her, so her legitimization was entered subsequently into her marriage record creating a mess :D (I genuinely think, even though I have no statistics to prove that, that there were more families of these occupations who lived years unmarried and hoping for a good end than the intended families that really started after obtaining the permission.)
Good Morning Brief Case! 💼 Thank you for another story, you never fail to come thru for us every week providing a new case we haven't heard of before. After a couple of weeks of seeing footage of masses of dead babies dragged out of the rubble in G**a, it seems surreal to watch something like this, where baby killers are actually made to pay for their crimes.
What did they expect to happen under such impoverishment of these people?? I am in no way condoning the Makin's actions, but, geesh. Sounds like John was a controlling manipulator and Sarah had no choice but to go along with it. In any case, John truly got what he deserved. I'm glad she got a prison term and got away from John. She got to be with her family in the end. Very terrible case. BC presented it well. Thanks once again for a most interesting case. If you observe Halloween, may you have a fun one
What part of this story sounded like Sarah had no choice but to go along with it. She sealed the deal with each of the mothers. She was just as culpable.
@@mountainman4859 That's why I said "in any case." Maybe she was threatened with death of her and her children if she didn't go along with the plan. Hi B.C. You must research night and day to find these cases. I’m so grateful to you for allowing cases to be heard that probably have been long forgotten about. This case is so very sad. I can’t imagine handing my child over to someone who professed to care for it along with weekly payments, only to find out that they died months ago probably from starvation or were killed. They most likely paid for weeks when their child probably had died months earlier. I hate how greed consumes people. At first I thought, out of 10 children, there would be a few babies in between that didn’t make it until the ages were revealed. Thank -you B.C. Another case no one would’ve known of without your endless research. I love you and until the next brief….case😊
Your research, attention to detail, story structure and presentation deserve way more than 5 quid. Thank you for your amazing work on a very sad and disturbing story from Australian history. Take care B.C.

I was utterly gobsmacked by this sad, sad situation that faced these mostly unmarried women. They loved their babies, and genuinely thought Mr. & Mrs. Makin were loving and trustworthy individuals. I was shocked that their daughters were not prosecuted for their involvement too. Excellent narrative, Mr. Brief Case, as always!! Sensational images too. Thank you for sharing your gift of storytelling with us. You and your work are truly appreciated!!
"Oh my babies!" she cried. "Oh their babies!" I cried. Unbelievable. If I understood correctly, her sentence was changed to life in prison due to her children (=her being a mother). Can someone explain me, how the life in prison helped her children? Did she make money working in prison which was sent to her children? Am I missing something here?
It amazes me how little value was placed on children at that time. I can tell you from the conduct of my family members that disposing of an inconvenient child was common practice.
It’s sadly a reality today as well. The difference is that the murder occurs before the baby is born, as though that makes it somehow more acceptable. 😔
@@Karenpayne47getting rid of a literal embryos are way better than birthing them and raising them in unsuitable environment. My country is highly religious, and cases where young teen giving birth in public bathroom alone is common, and then they toss their baby in the trash bin, or they leave their baby infront of the mosque. But thats rare, since it means they can be tracked and then PUNISHED instead of being helped. Forcing women to give birth and raise their children is nothing but a torture, yes, precautions can be taken, but they always have probability of failing. Getting rid of the embryos is not a shameful thing.

as ive had time better to think of the state of world... in a very tragic way, all this babies were lucky compared to the millions upon millions today in 2023....
What an awful case. I think the right one hung, lazy terrible man. Baby farming was an infamous business and often ended in the child's demise. When the children were insured it was even more prevalent by nefarious criminals under the umbrella of caring. Society was to blame, tarring single poor mothers impregnated by men with more money and power. Poor women with abdominal husbands, often handy with their fists, who could not provide for the numerous children they fathered. Thanks BC for another historic case to make us think.
Thanks Brief Case as always, for starting the week in a very intriguing way. This one was hard, it's the worst of the worst of people who choose to take advantage of and do harm to the youngest and/ or the oldest among us. 🙏🖤✌️😮
It's depressing to think about both that these crimes happened, and that there's people today who actively tries to make us go back to the time with no abortions, and no contraceptives.
Agree wholeheartedly. I particularly worry about those who find themselves pregnant through rape or those facing a certain, terminal genetic birth condition.
@@annettegrant6423 So true. Just like this murderous couple, the abortion industry kills babies for financial gain. Planned Parenthood should be renamed Infanticide for Profit.
You all change your mind so fast when you live in religious country like me and then you happen to get pregnant while being unmarried. I hate people who think they're in the high ground of morality to judge people who did abortion. The thought of having it makes me nauseous, but have you ever think about how desperate the women who decided to take it? You think anyone with sane mind would go 'ops i get pregnant again, better get rid of it.' As if its not a big deal? No. They had to think, think, and then decided, because they have no choice, whether its due to religion, financial stability, or because they know they are incapable of raising children due to physical health or mental health. Or worse, because they didn't get pregnant willingly (r word). You saying women have to live with the 'mistake' they did is nothing but punishing them for being a literal human who is fertile. I reckon you guys would backtrack so fast if the women start giving you their children to raise, so dont act so mighty. You only judge them because you never been in their situation, you would change your tune so fast when you experience what they go through.
Did these victims get justice? I don't really think so, Sarah was just as culpable as her husband! She looked these young women and couples in the eyes and assured them their children were safe, only to murder them in the exact same clothing they was wearing when their mother's handed them over 😮. Even more sad, most likely the servants were victims of the men they worked for, only to have their virtue and mortality questioned. 😢 A period of time in which i would want to visit but be king or queen and change this NARRATIVE.
It may just be my perception but [based largely on his demonstrated disinterest in gainful employment] I suspect Mr. Makin was entirely behind this nefarious enterprise. Based on his picture, he also appears the sort who would - without a second thought - soundly thump his wife and/or daughters if they didn't do exactly as he said, as well.
Thanks BC! Great episode! There was no winners in this case, only losers. Families giving up children because they could not or did not want to care for them and sick, twisted people who preyed upon them. It's incredible that any society can place so little value on the lives of its children.
You'd think that a woman who had raised 10 children would have known how to manage the money the mothers paid her. She and her husband could have supported both themselves and the babies, even saving some of the money. I bet murder was the husband's idea. He was probably one of those people who would "quiet" a noisy baby by putting a pillow over it. Her crime was not telling -- though she may have been afraid to.
I agree. Why would they murder a baby when the parents were willing to pay weekly - as long as they could see her? That makes no sense. Like you, I bet it was the husband who insisted on the murders, and the wife had to go along with it. A man who could kill infants was certainly capable of harming women too.
My bet was that both of them implemented the plan to kill the babies. She is the one who looked the mothers in the face and sweetly assured them she would love and care for them. She was as guilty. All she had to do was mosey on off to the police station without his knowledge and turn him in if he acted alone.
My grandmother had 15 kids although 5 of them didn't survive childhood. The thoughts of having 10 kids to feed and clothe makes me wonder how she did it..... yes I am old I'll be 59 in December..... meh old age.
@lazyhomebody1356 A parasite is usually an animal of a different species, is not a naturally found/expected organism AND provides no benefit to its host.
I've also seen a case when a daughter of such couple married aged 18 and her parents married about a year AFTER her, so her legitimization was entered subsequently into her marriage record creating a mess :D
(I genuinely think, even though I have no statistics to prove that, that there were more families of these occupations who lived years unmarried and hoping for a good end than the intended families that really started after obtaining the permission.)
❤❤ there’s no such thing as illegitimate children, they are all legitimate.❤❤❤
All given life by our Creator, each one unique ❤️
"There is no such thing as illegitimate children, only illegitimate parents".
Terrible times indeed. How awful a person must be to murder innocents for a living.
Love your work BC❤
MONDAY morning 🌄!!
Breif case!!! 💜👊
What horrible crimes they have committed! All the innocent, little souls!!!🕯️✨🙏🏼
I'm running a bit late today, but ready for my weekly dose of historical true crime! Thanks Brief Case!🙂
Good Morning Brief Case! 💼 Thank you for another story, you never fail to come thru for us every week providing a new case we haven't heard of before. These cases regarding "baby farming" disturb me the most, because they're innocents. Their little lives cut short. Breaks my heart. I cannot fathom killing babies. 😔😢
I hope you have a wonderful week and that you're safely back in Mexico, as things have gotten very dangerous overseas. 🙏 (Resa)
The only thing making Monday's bearable ❤ Brief Case gets me through 😂
thanks BC, i remember hearing this case, that was really haunting
After a couple of weeks of seeing footage of masses of dead babies dragged out of the rubble in G**a, it seems surreal to watch something like this, where baby killers are actually made to pay for their crimes.
And the beheaded babies? Gtfo
How sick you are, blaming just the man.
What part of this story sounded like Sarah had no choice but to go along with it. She sealed the deal with each of the mothers.
She was just as culpable.
@@mountainman4859 That's why I said "in any case." Maybe she was threatened with death of her and her children if she didn't go along with the plan. Also I stated that I still think she's guilty, but was it conscious compliance? I'm not sure on that one. Poor women at that time and women period had very few options for what kind of life they could have and do in society.
Hello everyone watching and listening from saint lucia on a warm sunny morning
Envious. Lucky you.
Sounds lovely :)

Hey! I got concerned when I didn't see you at 7 this morning. I pray all is well with you. Enjoy your day and thank you.
Time change across the pond
@Agapy8888 Ohhhhhj! Makes sense. 😀
Brilliant! Between your and Eerie Edinburgh's new video, it has been a great day. Thank you for another amazing video B.C. I hope you're well mate.
Thank you very much, Tamesin, that is very much appreciated
Your research, attention to detail, story structure and presentation deserve way more than 5 quid. Thank you for your amazing work on a very sad and disturbing story from Australian history. Take care B.C.
Truly horrifying. I can't understand how someone can do this to a baby or small child.
It is a misty, dreary Monday morning here in South-Central Pennsylvania. 😕 I'm always greatful Brief Case, to have another excellent video from your channel to enjoy. 😊 Thank you soo much! 🤗
QUALITY CHANNEL!!!!!!!!!!!! KEEP IT UP BIG MAN.
Appreciate it!
Thankyou so much Susan :)
@@BriefCaseOfficial You're welcome!!! You and your body of work are rarefied.
Good morning brief case thanks for the video very interesting case so far
Good morning!
Thank you for reminding us of "the good old days" when abortion was illegal and single mother were shameful.
It amazes me how little value was placed on children at that time. I can tell you from the conduct of my family members that disposing of an inconvenient child was common practice.
It’s sadly a reality today as well. The difference is that the murder occurs before the baby is born, as though that makes it somehow more acceptable. 😔
@@Karenpayne47 true. However, an abortion is better than live birth and being thrown down the outhouse hole to die in a pile of feces.
Thank you BC for always bringing new old cases. So many channels rehash cases over and over so I very much appreciate your work ethic . Often I watch 2 or 3 times because there is so much information. I hit the like button automatically w BC !
❤
Much appreciated

Good Monday morning Brief Case. Another great upload
Thank you kindly
@BriefCaseOfficial you're welcome have a good week
The cases of the baby farmers are SO HARD to listen to🤬💔 no sympathy or leeway should've been given to them!
Brief case, Love your channel. I love history and crime history and you deliver. Often-times giving cases I have never heard about before. Thank you!❤❤
Good morning Brief Case.
Morning :)
as ive had time better to think of the state of world... in a very tragic way, all this babies were lucky compared to the millions upon millions today in 2023....
Of all the crimes and outrages most wretched, this category is top of the list.
Abominable. Abdominal is a pretty funny typo
Thanks Brief Case as always, for starting the week in a very intriguing way. This one was hard, it's the worst of the worst of people who choose to take advantage of and do harm to the youngest and/ or the oldest among us. 🙏🖤✌️😮
Thanks Laura
What a lovely-looking couple...😮😅
😂😂😂💀💀💀 The picture looks haunting.
@@katarinatibai8396 Perfect for Halloween!
After 10 kids.....? She's lucky to be upright.
Sounds identical to today's foster care program. With all too many times the same end result.
It's depressing to think about both that these crimes happened, and that there's people today who actively tries to make us go back to the time with no abortions, and no contraceptives.
I have no problem with contraceptives that prevent conception, however….
It’s still a human being whether he/she has been born yet or not.
To kill a child, whether in the womb or outside the womb is still murder😥
Coming back as a King or Queen would not have changed anything, they had no control over the laws of the land.
Horrible people, killing babies 😢 Thanks Brief Case, God bless ❤

@@BriefCaseOfficial my pleasure
Those poor babies . They never stood a chance.
I wonder if we will see the return of baby farming in the US states where access to reproductive care and legal abortions has been restricted
Maybe in this day and age people will take more care not to get pregnant if they don’t want a child.
It’s still a human life ended, whether it happens before or after birth.
You don't see the hyprocrisy in advocating for baby-murder while feigning outrage over baby-murder do you?
@@tinameyer7080Not at all. A parisite ruining a woman's life is very different
@lazyhomebody1356 A parasite is usually an animal of a different species, is not a naturally found/expected organism AND provides no benefit to its host. Given that a baby is the SAME species, naturally occurring, expected to be present as a consequence of certain behaviors and improves the mother host's immune system- it does NOT meet the definition of parasite. It is a HUMAN baby.
