6:30 nice lesson, thanks! I thought that chromatic mediants were only between chords which roots are related via thirds, so you can go from Cm to Em, but I definetely heard that in my favourite score music there are things like Cm to C (shift from minor to major is very satisfying). Nice examples, I'd like this topic to be covered more!
Just saw Mortal Engines. The music with the visuals of London chasing the little city and charging the gate in the end was amazing. I sat through the complete credits to listen to the music. Really great job, Tom!
Nice of you to share all this knowlege with us. Thanks.
Congrats on 100k right before it hits! Well deserved brother!
Awesome episode! So helpful to hear the breakdown of how the themes are used and recur in variations. Thank You!
Great real world lesson. Thank you so much for all you do and for sharing it with us. - I'm also looking forward to your brass library.
"i really hope this movie does well, because if not you'll stop watching these episodes" well, i have some good news and I have some bad news, Tom
just read the Wikipedia page, "biggest box office bomb of 2018" goodness.
@@minorseven2791 I was so hyped for it and planned to see it in the theater over christmas and on the day it came out I checked and not a single theater in my city (of over 2.5 million people) was showing it. So I don't know if that happened anywhere else but maybe the reason it underperformed was not because people didnt want to see it but because theaters didnt show it.
Really think something went wrong with the marketing. I was pretty excited for it read the books then it just never appeared and before i know it was out of cinemas and had flopped. still haven't seen it.
@@JackGreenAudio i saw it opening night in theaters with my friends and we all loved it a lot! i was stoked to see sequels. then i started seeing the reception and honestly i was confused. i thought it was a really fun movie!
Thank you for sharing your very informative information.
I did notice that harmonics were slightly less silky than the rest of the orchestra, only a few years later :P, FYI. I think the look on your face gave it away a bit, and that's one of the reasons I have given it extra attention 😄. Love your videos and hope to see more coming soon for Rebel Moon for example. Thanks in advance ;)
Wow This video is a treasure!
Goed bezig weer, Tom - kelere.
Happy new Year Master!! Thank you for all of this
incredible composition man. love this one very much PROPS
Love the Gaffer Tape! Enjoyed how you tied it all in. Kudos for sharing and explaining Mediant !! Contra forte bassoon wow. IS THE FOLLOWING MUSIC LAW: almost always seems a character's theme in some way reflects the gender of that character masculine/feminine . Is this true or just my perception? Please explain.
Honestly, put in the mix with live recordings, can't really hear that you used a sample library to add those harmonics...sounds good.
Have you done any videos about the set up of controls on your large tablet?
No man's land, Median / medium relationship, ok. I learned something. Thank you. Chilling music that medusa's theme..
Very helpful ! Thanks Tom :)
These vids are soooooo dope!!! Love it!
Words maybe are not enough with just thank you!!!
Hi Magic Junkie XL. I'm studing - almost frame by frame! - ALL your episodes (well... a better word is "lessons"...'coz they are!). May i ask you an episode where you explain what are the arguments that leads to the decision of writing a score for a scene (or part of a scene). It is only a movie director's decision?... or the composer is involved in that decision? or can to propose music ideas for this or that scene? And the other side is interesting too... i mean... the decision of not to put music in a scene and why! Collateral arguments can be... if the music composer is involved in the sound design of single sounds or (particular) "noises" that play a significant role in the scene.
Tnx for sharing your art and BIG knowledge with us!
Amazing themes! Thanks for share your methods!
What keyboard do you have in front?
Native Instruments Komplete Kontrol MK-I S88.
Sounds so much similar to brave heart theme by James Horner! Anyway great tutorial... !! Thank you Junkie for your efforts...!!
Rohan Puntambekar Official “For the Love of a Princess” by James Horner, sure does. But I love Tom, too!!
What a lovely singing voice you've got Tom :D
How much did the entire studio/orchestra hire actually cost? Is it really $100,000 (NZD I presume)?
Don't care if the movie does good or bad I'm still enjoying these videos junky!
Remember, there's about 50 - 70 professional musicians who needs to be paid. Add technicians, mixers, gear rental, studio rent and you're quickly looking at 20-25K USD for one hour and that's probably on the cheap end of the spectrum. When you get to Toms level, you're probably looking 50 000+ an hour.
+Massivecarcrash There's bound to be orchestras that expensive, but I recorded for six hours recently with an 80 piece orchestra. Cost, ~£12,000 plus VAT, as musicians are cheaper where I went. That included everything except mastering. I do all my own orchestration and part prep so saved money there. More expensive studios/orchestras like Abbey Road and one of the London groups; ~£25k for three hours (I had a quote). As for "Tom's level", the level of the composer isn't really relevant. A studio, staff and orchestra costs what it costs. They're hired by knowns and unknowns alike. 50k an hour is insane.
DaveDexterMusic I stand corrected. I’ve been wondering what it cost you to record a full orchestra, been following you since your debunking day and here we are on a junkie xl video. The media composition world sure is a small one 😌
Erg leerzaam, dank je wel Tom!
Class once more Tom, and i DID think the harmonics were sampled 8)
Thanks so much for all the generous info!
Happy new yeaaaar Tom! (im just back ...)
3:12 I wrote that melody back in 1993 when I was 12. I still have my hand written score.
Hi tom. Why you have recorded same strings and woodwinds one chanel in mono and one in stereo,?
Love it! I noticed the sample part only cause I saw that the track said Hi Short Strings EW :)
Medusa’s theme is unique and phenomenal
Amazing !!!
Tom's theme sounds similar to one of the themes in Braveheart.
Happy new year Tom and all other here :D.
[ I like the Keyboard (series) "Yamaha Tyros" & i've upload my old Song *"Lost* *Souls"* that i've made with the Yamaha Tyros 1. The song has simple sounds and loops, but listen it and relax ]
See you Tom and have fun + all here too ;)
ps
Somtimes it's good, if you mix old and new, like old strings sound and clean bass ...
And something other:
"A Chinese Ghost Story (1)" is a good classic movie :)
making people happy... 😀😀😀
I tought at the easter egg part, that you used the violin from LABS Frozen Strings
Awesome Theme ...:D
Believe it or not: I thought that those violins sounded different in that part before you mentioned the easter egg
nice vid
what name of soundtrack of the delivery?
Is the harmonic violin from LSS ??
lol gaffer tape saves the world around.
Junkie Vid Time! :D
Love the tip about fixing things with samples. Ya getting a bit chubby there brother. Time to hit the gym. We need you around for as long as possible so we can soak up your knowledge!
Cool!
how can he go from Em to Ebm using the mediant thing he talks about? The rule there is usually to go up or down a major or minor third isn't it? Not a half step
22:07 that is definitely inspired by Hans Zimmer 😂
Isn't the stereo swapped somewhere? Because the violins can be heard on the right and cellis etc. on the left.
Mate, good spot cos I thought I was going mad - ha! I ended up swapping my headphones around to get the 'real' orchestral treatment ;)
When Junkie XL Masterclass?
Reminds me slightly of Braveheart
use Velcro tapes to stick things around 😉
5:12 sounds like something from Indiana Jones Raiders
yay I got the easter egg too ^_^
I got that easter egg! Noticed that flautando violins right away! Don't know why but it's special...
tsukishiro yeah I noticed it as well and thought I was going crazy.
wow this voice where do i find this?
This set of themes reminds me heavily of David Lynch's Dune
thumbs up👍
🍸🍸 🍷Happy New Year 2019🍷🍸🍸
🍸♪♫Best Regards Frank♫♪🍸
13:06 is James Newton Howard "The Village" all over it
hahaa. so i know that i got hired to score the hardeest part of a movie as you tell, the dialogues, and this is my first job with this
I hate when the theatres doesn't have the bass turned up so I can't hear the Junkie Score slap! SMH!
