Great video Dan. The only thing that I would change, is to put a wire barrier across the bin (at about the half way mark) with a timber frame. That way, as you fill up one end with the worm droppings and can't fit any more into that half of the bin, you start on the other end. Over the period of a couple of weeks, the majority of worms will move into the end that is now being filled with food. Once the majority of worms have migrated to the fresh end, it makes it easier to harvest the black gold without having to sort through a couple of thousand worms.
Just a though, I hope that it helps.

I've watched MANY MANY build your own worm bin videos, and this is the one that finally "clicked" in my head as to why you need red worms, the type of bedding, all the requirements to make a happy system for them. Very nice video. This is the one for me. Thank you sir. You've explained it better than anyone I've seen.

I’ve been wondering how to keep the bedding volume up and the wet moisture content down and this told me how exactly. I hadn’t thought of using the coir, but had been puzzled why every video had thick fluffy castings while mine keep coming out muddy. Thanks for posting this!

Actually, night crawlers will not die. I had a very small vermicompost bin made from a plastic cracker container. It was roughly 6" x 6" x 6" and they did just fine. They even laid eggs.

Wow great info Thankyou we where picking our boys up from school and saw a old cast iron bath tub a few streets away so went home and got the trailer, so heavy but we did it and got it uo and made it slowly home. It has had a hole cut in the side down low maybe was a worm farm or something I may be able to use it or will block it up but it is at a good height so like to see about attaching some sort of tap to it
I am going to look at getting some cinder blocks and do what you did for a lid. I will look at what I can use I do have a small round trampoline mat but I want to keep for thr garden to use like for frost protection I do have a large rectangle one think will use that one as it is going at the springs. Love thst coir brick great stuff and will order some worms
Can't wait to do this now thankyou for showing as you have inspired me

    Hello, thanks for your video.
I just want to ask you.
what can you do for the worms in winter, especially when the temperature is below 0c so that the worms normally(as in Sommer)produce the wormcompost and increase the number of themselves.
    Thanks in advance

I use a black light bulb you can burrow out a hole in the center of your compost and place it in the center of the tub just don’t allow the dry leaves to get close to the bulb.

Nice. I have a cast iron duel sink that I now know what to use it for! Thanks. Questions: 1. how does the liquid drain out didn't see a drain hole in the trampoline; 2. how do you harvest the castings I have a 'sifere' similar to yours; 3. what is the life span of your worms? Thanks for any assistance.

I’m in the desert southwest. We have hot summers. I’m building mine in a small building made of pallets. They allow shade, airflow. I’m also putting an old dead tarp on top of the tub to help with shade and water retention.

Hi Dan, I live in Phoenix area which is also considered as 9b. I had a worm bin with over 2k worms in it for 8 months, 'til we hit the hottest time of the summer and within a day or two, I noticed my bin is empty, and all migrated out of the bin. I kept the bin in the shade all day, and it had holes for air circulations, but inside the bin I could tell it was very warm which I know it was not good for the worms. The question for you is how hot it gets around your area. I used ice inside the bags to cool the bin down but that didn't help. We get a few weeks of 110+, and I think that caused them to leave the bin. Please let me know if you can think of a trick to be able to keep them alive in my area all year around while I have the bin outdoor.
    Thanks

Tho I'm iffy on adding green yard clippings to worms because it's thermitic, everything else was well done...
Now is this inside? If not I'd build a surrounded thermo barrier for the winters out of ridgid insulation board... That iron being frozen in winter is surrounding them, could be a failure if to cold temps...
Good job tho, love the trampoline idea...

How often do you have to feed your worms? My system for some reason has not worked out and my worms keep dying so have to figure out a better way to keep them alive.

    • @madamedent
      @madamedent 6 років тому +2

It depends on how many worms you have, but it's about half their weight, or less, per day. You can feed them a little every day or save it and do it a couple times a week, but you'll just have to check and see what they've done to it (it's important not to over- or under-feed). Don't feed them meat, oily stuff, or super acidic food, and digging it into the top few inches of their bedding (or covering it with more) helps. Some other things --- check the top several inches and make sure it's consistently damp, otherwise the worms will suffocate; too wet and they'll drown (you want about like a wrung-out sponge). Also fluff up the bed and otherwise provide for good airflow (drill holes in the side near the top and/or have an air-permeable lid). Keep them comfortable, in darkness with about the same temp range most people are most comfortable in (range of 40-80 degrees F, but ideally more toward the middle).
