Great clip. I just finished reading Eckart Frahm's Assyria: The Rise and Fall of the World's First Empire the other day, and this clip is very much in line with the facts. It's good to see that you added the quotes in the Suryoye language with English translations too, though you omitted most of Ashurbanipal's Susa report, which is arguably the most badass of all Assyrian kings' statements after reporting on a war. Here's an abbreviated version of it: ”Susa, the great holy city, abode of their gods, seat of their mysteries, I conquered. I entered its palaces, I opened their treasuries where silver and gold, goods and wealth were amassed... I destroyed the ziggurat of Susa. I smashed its shining copper horns. I reduced the temples of Elam to naught; their gods and goddesses I scattered to the winds. The tombs of their ancient and recent kings I devastated, I exposed to the sun, and I carried away their bones toward the land of Ashur. I devastated the provinces of Elam and on their lands I sowed salt.“ - Ashurbanipal Really, as far as I'm concerned, Ashurbanipal should have done the same with Babylon, because Babylon's civil war in Mesopotamia, was what ultimately caused the fall of the Neo-Assyrian Empire, and later, the Babylonians destroyed Nineveh and Ashur with the help of the Medes. So Ashurbanipal's biggest mistake is that he was too nice to the Babylonians. Esarhaddon should've never rebuilt Babylon after Sennacherib had destroyed Babylon. Anyway, Ashurbanipal was a great king, and his legacy lives on, through his library. It's thanks to his library that we know so much about the ancient Assyrians and other peoples of the ancient world. Sure, he was brutal when required, but it's his Babylonian brother that was really the cause of the fall of Assyria, because that civil war severely weakened Assyria. Hopefully, in the not too distant future, we Assyrians can have a new Ashurbanipal leading us into a new, glorious future.
Eckart's book came out after I wrote the manuscript for this video, but I used other great books and sources. That's a very interesting point-what would have happened if Ashurbanipal destroyed Babylon completely? Maybe the Assyrian Empire would have survived. Who knows? Thank you for your comment :)
@@tableofgods Oh for sure, had Assyria not fallen that early in its imperial period, the Neo-Assyrian Empire would have gone on to rival the Roman Empire in size, if not much bigger. Keep in mind, in 600 BC, the various tribes outside of Assyria weren't as developed and powerful, so it would've been much easier to conquer much of the world at that point. And had that happened, Assyria would probably never have fallen, and we wouldn't have had Islam and so on today. We'd be living in a very different world today, and probably a world for the better. By the way, you should check out Simo Parpola's The Mesopotamian Soul of Western Culture, great stuff. Now, that's how much the Neo-Assyrian Empire influenced the world, in such a short time. @@tableofgods So I have been thinking about something, you speak Western Aramaic of modern day Turkey, Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, and Israel. Essential Levantine/Anatolian regions. Is the Nineveh Dialect an eastern, or central dialect of Suret? Because the Surets’ of Iran are much different sounding than the Iraqi versions. Could Nineveh dialect be classified as central due to its proximity, difference in pronunciation, and distance from the home land of Proper Assyria? Side note: It would be sort of funny if it was called the “Proper Dialect” or “Proper Suret”. Not because it is the most original, but it is the land of Assyria proper.

Hopefully you haven’t done that 🫣 Just a little side note but I wish you could release the eastern (dialect) Assyrian language when speaking throughout the video as the ‘th’ and ‘o’ sounds are of the western dialect…
as a speaker of the Hindi language I am stuck by how similar the customs and tradition of old-Assyria is to india, also the words" spoken and names are quite similar to the Sankrit language.
I always got the impression that Ashurbanipal was an unhappy man who did not enjoy the harsh acts his position required. It's a strange thing to pity a king who died more than a thousand years ago.
@27:10..."...on stone from before the Deluge." Hmmmm...I wonder, did Ashurbanipal, believe in a worldwide flood? It would be very interesting to know if in fact...he did. The fact that Ashurbanibpal had reign over the majority of the Assyrian empire, but still wouldn't allow his brother Shumash-shum-ukin to rule over Egypt was due to Ashurbanibpal's pride. He was so used to being the most favored one that it didn't even dawn on him that he may have been overstepping his boundaries. It's the same thing as when a parent, who has rule over their house, won't even allow their children to have rule over their room. The result of that situation similarily ends in some sort of a revolt of the child's part. That's partly what the saying means, "With great power comes great responsibility". In this case, the great responsibility on Ashurbanibpal's part was to know when to step back. Shumash-shum-ukin, as the older brother was already giving Ashurbanibpal face, but even that wasn't good enough for Ashurbanibpal. The result of this was fratricide, one of the most abominable actions and one that would have broken his father's heart if he'd known. Ashurbanibpal literally defied his father's wishes in continuing to usurp Shumash-shum-ukin's rule in Egypt. It's a tragic tale on Shumash-shum-ukin's part. Then Ashurbanibpal had to go and write that narcissistic letter to the people of Babylon, who greatly beloved their king. Complete foolishness. For the study of Assyrian history, what books would you recommend?
Thank you very much! It was very interesting and informative. If only his story could be made into a movie but no. They'll just ruin it like so many historical stories. The casting would be horrible! They would intentionally make Ashurbanipal the wrong race. This documentary was better than any movie being made today.

I'm a native Hebrew speaker, and it's mind blowing that some of these Sumarian words closely resemble their Hebrew counterparts even thousands of years later
That’s not Sumerian you are hearing. It’s an Assyrian language. The western dialect to be precise, west of the Euphrates river. Sumer has been dead for thousands of years. Nobody speaks it today.
Good video. Interesting to have things read out in Syriac; which is, of course, rather anachronistic. Also, having Roman legionaries posing for Assyrian troops etc. Smaller things are: Shamash met or mît uballiṭ (The Sun revives the dead) not metu. Still, I'm happy this video tries to do the Assyrians justice, and not frame them as evil butchers. Thank you.
I find the history of Iraq, Syria and Assyria fascinating and spellbinding. The advanced civilization of Vedic India and the previous Puranic age saw impression of this culture firmly embossed in Greece, as the name of Agni, Mitra, Varuna, Indra etc., were gladly mixed into their own culture. Next door in Assyria, Vedic name of Asura became their own. Ashurbanipal and many others took Vedic names. Vedic arithmetic and geometry were studied by all. When all the tablets of the library of Ashurbanital is translated, it will be found to be treasure trove of knowledge. At the root of all these were the 11,000 years tradition of Sanatan religion preached by Krishna to the Yadava tribe, and founded the first human civilization. When Turks (Kuru) from central Asia entered India after the collapse of the Harappan civilization and destroyed the imperial Yadava in the Kurukshetra war 1500-1200 bc, a chapter of human civilization was forgotten. Ashurbanipal's library will bring back the lost chapter.
U shouldn’t and the reason why ur paying attention now is because of war and where the origins of religion started and don’t ever tell a middle eastern that there the same as Indians or that they r part of Indian culture they will be very offended and tell u ur wrong which u r
If he was in charge while the kingdom was decaying and didn't do anything to prevent it, was he a great king? Clearly there were problems he didn't address and decisions he made that contributed to the destruction soon after him. Is that greatness?
It wasn't necessarily decaying just because he lost control over Egypt, which, after all, wasn't that important to Ashurbanipal. The destruction of the empire soon after Ashurbanipal's death can also be viewed from the point of view that he was such a great king that no one could replace him. But also, as you say, that maybe he wasn't, because he didn't establish something that his successors could build upon. But all empires fall. And many empires have fallen after their largest expansion, led by their greatest leader. Neo-Babylon is another example. It fell shortly after Nebuchadnezzar II. It doesn't mean NII was a bad king.

@@IOSPBITBRNO Western dialect of Syriac, which is still Eastern Aramaic, not Western Aramaic.
Your ability to tell stories is exceptional.
Ashurbanipal proved himself worthy of protecting his people through displays of strength.

Very good video, thank you, i just subscribed from Québec 😊
Thank you from Stockholm :)
thank you
His library of cuneiform texts leads to actual authenticity of the early Hebrew Bible.
This is great content. I love it
Thank you
Thanks
I’m just over than 20 minutes in and I can already see that you have done justice to our history and this particular king who gets a bad rep and is often vilified in every medium out there. Hopefully you haven’t done that 🫣
Just a little side note but I wish you could release the eastern (dialect) Assyrian language when speaking throughout the video as the ‘th’ and ‘o’ sounds are of the western dialect…
Thank you, I'll try to have the eastern dialect in the future :)

Thanks for your information about my Assyrian nation Civilization ❤
as a speaker of the Hindi language I am stuck by how similar the customs and tradition of old-Assyria is to india, also the words" spoken and names are quite similar to the Sankrit language.
Wow, that's cool. I didn't know that.
Also to Arabic there were similar vocabularies too
He said just He was with Daniel so shall
Wow, thank you
You're welcome!
It's only a matter of time before this channel explodes in popularity.
The holy spirit was speaking to me about the Assyrians and Daniel in my sleep
First time here, ❤❤👍👍🔥
Welcome :)
I always got the impression that Ashurbanipal was an unhappy man who did not enjoy the harsh acts his position required. It's a strange thing to pity a king who died more than a thousand years ago.
one of the few ancient history documentaries that you subscribe to the channel within the first 10 seconds of video
@27:10..."...on stone from before the Deluge." Hmmmm...I wonder, did Ashurbanipal, believe in a worldwide flood? It would be very interesting to know if in fact...he did. It is quite intriguing, that many, (very many), cultures and societies...actually believed in a worldwide flood. Very interesting.....
Beautiful presentation. Where did you find all this? i hope one day you do some accounts of the Old Testament Bible 🙏 There is no one doing anythng as captivating, too many are using A.i. voice! which is disappointing, sounding like an Englishman who snorts too much Coke I'm not kidding.
Thankyou , I look forward to seeing more content.
- BTW the full account of the betrayal of Sennacherib is written in 2Kings 18.9-37 & Prophet Isaiah 36.1
Ashurbanipal is written in Ezra 4.10, you will find interesting material I'm sure.
MashAllah, Peace, Blessings ❤️
Why there is no movies about this
The fact that Ashurbanibpal had reign over the majority of the Assyrian empire, but still wouldn't allow his brother Shumash-shum-ukin to rule over Egypt was due to Ashurbanibpal's pride.

Thank you!
first I would like to see thank to you so much to make the video in put in UA-cam to special to me to see. I spend most my summer going to museum in London special to see him king , I catch my attention the first I went by myself to museum. I also play with my young I'm queen the universe joking around , now see serious and scary.
As an arabic speaker some assryian words i understood with ease
Now you’re going to claim everyone was Jewish

A bit early to show the Roman legions
Middle easterners don’t care for India or countries like that as long as they have the religion then we don’t care
@@ritaa1359All you need is to explain why Indians follow the ULU culture like the Semitic people of ME.

Ashurbanipal wants a go pro for Christmas
Ashurbanipal was just human...
That language spoken in the start of this is not Assyrian
We really think he had a crown like the one in the thumbnail...?
I walk by his statue nearly everyday.
Cool and where is it located?
