@ 5:56, that was one of many things I loved about Saints Row 2. I loved seeing the boss (who I customized to look like me) being so mean and intimidating. I love the whole anti-hero vs anti-hero premise that it used - as opposed to that overused good vs evil premise which I've grown bored of. At the time when I played it, I had been feeling very disgruntled and stressed out, so seeing myself push people around and be so malicious was very satisfying and therapeutic. I can't say that about most of today's games. BTW, I now subbed to your channel. Keep up the good work.
Sr2 is the best mix between a great storyline and goofy fun. Sr3 focused too much on the latter and the story of that game feels lacklustre. Sr4 brought back some good writings and I throughly enjoyed it but sr2 will remain the best in the series.
Saints Row 2 is honestly a marvel in terms of just how much was improved upon going from its predecessor to this. There is just so much to see and do in the game from customizing yourself to the weapons you can grab, the side-activities, the fun you can have when you just don't care like the cheats and as someone who was introduced to the series through this after the initial disappointment I felt for GTA IV? Honestly this is the kind of game I pictured in my head when I thought of a next-gen sandbox/GTA game and honestly? I quite dig the set-up with taking on three gangs because each story feels like it has a beginning, middle and end. However, I do feel that the game has aged quite a bit from the visuals to some of its frustrating side-activities (Crowd Control in particular can go fuck itself.), aggravating missions that crank the difficulty up to the point of absurdity and it starts Volition's trend of making a really fun game while also removing features from the previous that did function well like the ability to gain super punches by getting really drunk and taking less damage from getting really high but other than that? It's a fun experience and I think honestly if the amount of content here was present in The Third and IV with only the most necessary streamlining needed to make the game more fun? I'd adore those two more than this game.
GTA IV was great, I can't deny that. However, I personally have alot more memories of having fun with SR2 and friends. Great reviews, keep up the fantastic work sir.
@@chrisdelgado4621 Yeah, it's a little complicated. While I think GTA IV is a well-made game and it does have it's moments, it's drastic change in tone was a lot to take in, compared to the last two entries in the series.

I can't even begin to tell u how many hours I spent playing this game even after I completed it. Like I literally lived life of my own in the game. I had different spots I would stay at, certain clubs I would go thru where the pimps hung og to fight the pimps, go to the prison, go to the mall & shop, etc. I had soooo many clothes & shoes
The last good Saints Row. I really enjoyed it when I played it like 6 years after release. I then played SR3 and... well it was mildly entertaining. Oh right I almost forgot I also played SR4 in a weekend when it was free, completed it on Saturday, and then uninstalled it. Was underwhelmed by even SR3 standards.
I love this game. While the first game was similar to San Andreas, SR2 basically reminded me of the cathartic power fantasies of Vice City, as rampage through city streets with an attack chopper blaring 80's metal and power ballads on the radio and taking over businesses by killing rival gangsters with a revolver and a katana.
Normally, I would say that the first game in a story-driven franchise is the best. I mean come on, you can never (or most of the time at least) beat the originals in terms of their stories. However, Saints Row 2 is just one of those rare sequels that did. Not to mention the additions that Volition made to their already-established formula from the first game and I have to say, Saints Row 2 is one of the best sequels ever made, one of the best open-world games of all time (Top 50 at least), and the best in the series. Saints Row: The Third and IV ain't got shit on this game. This game was as close to perfection as Saints Row could possibly get.
SR2 has been installed on my PC for YEARS, and will never be uninstalled - purely because even though I've finished the game multiple times, I love starting up the game and just driving around the city and doing shit. I can spend an hour or two just listening to the music on the radio, causing mayhem, or just driving and enjoying the city. I genuinely love this game.
The enemy choppers also only gained the 100% missile accuracy with the new Ultor story DLC / patch. Don't let your system download any patches for the game and you can now dodge enemy missiles, you likely won't be able to co-OP play though.
The activities are worth doing not just for respect, but because the rewards you get from completing them are generally very useful (even if you don't care for Insurance Fraud, which is much better in SR2 because you can get some hilarious airtime in Adrenaline Mode, the reward for completing one of the instances is infinite sprint, and you can also unlock infinite ammo and reduced damage from vehicle impacts from other activities). Plus, when you complete a few activities to level 8 or 10 or whatever the max level is to get the rewards, you end up earning so much respect you can pretty much mainline the story missions from there on. I've reached infinite respect on multiple playthroughs without even touching some activities!
Been waiting for this review for the longest. I subscribed back when I saw your Scarface review and it's awesome to see you finally cover Saints Row 2. The story for Saints Row 2 was definitely top notch and I wish others would try out the game without comparing it to GTA.
Saints Row 2 is my favorite freeroaming game of all time, it’s so good, the only complaint I have is the frame rate but that’s it, I love Saints Row 2!
I absolutely love the first 2 Saints Row games, they're so fun, I wish they wouldn't have ruined them. I'd rather play Saints Row 2 over GTA IV any day.
The thing that I really like about SR2 is the mechanics of being able to smash post boxes (in SR4 you can...sort of do the same when you equip the laser katana) and best of all pick anything to use as a weapon, something I wish the later games had as well. Well executed review.
I'm glad CD Projekt black ported it (rughly) to the pc market, so the modders could make it a proper playable game! Its a real ruff diamond on pc, but a BEAUTIFUL ruff diamond!
One small bit about this game that always stuck with me was how the boss would eventually sing along with the radio and when everybody wants to rule the world came on while I was flying a jet around it hit me just right as a kid.
Bought this game and never regretted it. This is one of those games where you can turn you brain off and just have fun... Even in 2020. Far more replay able than GTA 4
There's a cruise control button for drive bys. basically keeps the car moving consistently so you only need to worry about steering and aiming. Also, you can unlock buffs to your stats, discounts and exclusive items with activities. Also if you max out your respect you unlock Infinite respect. I recommend looking on a wiki for what activies unlock the buffs and infinite ammo weapons and doing all them, and then looking toward what else you want to unlock and getting that to max out your respect. lastly i've never really noticed the issue with the empty streets... maybe cause i'm playing the xbox 360 version? I noticed the frame-rate in this footage seems a bit worse too (although it's still bad on the 360)
When i played saints 2, i was lucky to not have any issues and whenever the frames tried to drop, it just used some motion blur to make it not drop and actully helped me. The only bug i actully had was when i beat all the other gangs and it was the 2nd ultor thing when he tells the plan. I spawned in some train tracks. I saved and reloaded so, thats the only bug i had really. But, i really love the 2nd game. And only have some minor gripes
The biggest problem with the PC port is that the game's speed is tied to your processor clock speed. Most of the issues seem to spiral out from that decision. It was also a problem with Red Faction Guerilla.
There’s an in game reason why the map from SR1 and SR2 are different is because there was an earthquake that hit the city in the 5 years your character is in a coma and that’s why church was bought and rebuilt by Ultor.
I absolutely love your reviews man, they are very in-depth and obviously you do a lot of research and editing for your videos, definitely you are very underrated!
Great video. This is my favorite open world game ever made, and in my opinion, one of the best. I've been playing it for over 10 years, and I still have a blast every time I load it up again. It never gets old, and there's never a shortage of stuff to do
Great review. This is one of my favorite games, and certainly my favorite Saints Row. I loved 3, but wasn't big on the exaggerated character designs. 4 went way over the top and stopped being Saints Row to me. I loved having multiple gangs to fend off in a turf war. And I never wanted to be a superhero or the president. I just wanted to be a badass gangster building my own little empire.
Same. I felt like 2 and 3 were perfect action-comedy hybrids. 4 felt a bit too comic book-esque. While it had its moments, like the Streets of Rage parody, I was not a fan of the superpowers because I spent most of my time jumping across buildings and sprinting like the Flash, neither of which seem fun to me.
I just came back from an echocardiogram, during so I was thinking “I should play some saints row when I get home”. And here you are, reviewing another saints row. My second favourite in the series.
Someone's probably mentioned it already, but all named Homies are on a cooldown. They'll stay with you until dismissed or you die I think, even continuing through saving and reloading from my experience, but after they're gone you have to wait a short bit before calling them back. Afterwards, you can call them again. It isn't a long cooldown by any means. Also, it is absolutely possible to avoid missiles while in a helicopter, I've done it many times. In a plane? Dunno, haven't flown any yet.
Your roundup of the review is the exact reason why a lot of Saints Row (2) fans hope to see Volition returning features that were available in the first 2 games in the franchise. They have been silent for quite some time now and after Agents of Mayhem even the fanbase has gone pretty silent... I hope they’re going to announce the next game this year and i hope that of they do it this year that we will get what we have been asking for since the release of Saints Row 4. Also, a bit of advice for when you start playing Saints Row 4: don’t look at it too much as a Saints Row game as the differences are enormous! The core gameplay of it is pretty good and the game itself is very enjoyable but it’s nothing like Saints Row 3 and that’s truly saying something.
I love this game, definitely my favorite Saints Row. Just went back and finally beat it about a month ago with my girlfriend in Co-op, after almost beating it several months ago. But I couldn't because the game wouldn't load the building I had to enter.
I love this game to death. Easily in my top 10, but this game, Fallout 3 and Skyrim (also top 10 games for me) are the only games I can remember playing that had regular crashes that actually hindered my experience. I would be scared any time the action got intense because I thought I was about to lose everything. But dammit, this game is so amazing I forgive it.
This game introduced me to some wicked underground funk music, all from Illinois I believe. Amnesty, Ebony Rhythem Band, whoever decided to include such underground music deserves some credit.
during development of SR2 they were working on creating Geo-Mod 2.0 (Red Faction Guerilla) and at one point tried to implement all the destruction we came to know in RF:G. But was dropped for obvious reasons. Imagine being able to destroy the whole city piece by piece like the old Crackdown 3 showcase
Brother, I'm so glad that you enjoyed this game. You trashed the first one which was revolutionary and great in its day. SR2 was one of my fondest games from memory, I played it Co-Op online with my mate via Xbox Live in 2008 Imagine all of the activities with a friend and a mic and playing through the super great storyline! Very happy you got to appreciate this fantastic game that seems to be forgotten. Thanks again and I'll continue to sub :) Cheers
GTA IV is way more polished. Saints Row was really fun though. But hearing that they started making Saints Row 2 before Saints Row 1 was released explains a lot about the lack of graphical detail. The creativeness of Saints Row outweighs GTA IV though. Being able to customise almost everything is great and also being able to use real world objects to beat up your enemies with.
Liked the video, though I did notice you didn’t utilize cruise control (which locks your car’s speed, and can be increased or decreased while activated, which is intended to help with drive-by shooting) much, if at all. That’s just a nitpick, though.
I had a big gripe with this game : it happened more than once that I had to go to a certain corner of the map to start a mission, without knowing why I had to go there, only to see my charcter in a cut-scene, in a completely different location, like the main Saints crib. I found that profoundly un-immersive, borderline game-breaking from my point of view. At least in GTA games, 1. you always know why you have to go to a certain place to launch a mission 2. the cut-scene starts at the exact place you launched it. I like Saints Row very much, but on this crucial point, they still have some lessons to learn from their masters. In an open world, the "sense of place" is paramount.
Great review! Saints Row 2 is my favorite game of all time I have hundreds of hours played. With the customization you could be literally anyone I would start the game over and role play as a cop, homeless person, prison guard, firefighter, paramedic the possibilities were endless. I loved how each district had certain people like the college had goths and cheerleaders while downtown had people in suits so much attention to detail. I would pay any amount of money for a remake!
It took me some time to get used to doing activities to gain respect, and learning that respect was necessary to play missions, but once used to it I liked the fact that something new was attempted with the side missions/activities. At first, I did what was necessary to have enough respect to play all the game missions/strongholds, then played the activities until the respect was infinite. I liked the rival gang mission structure that was carried over from the first game, although I usually played them in a certain order I was comfortable with (I always started with the Sons of Samedi, followed by The Brotherhood, then The Ronin). I thought Stilwater was also an awesome city to explore; it has everything from a college area to a trailer park, and a lot is going on with downtown. I see why people say this is the peak of the Saints Row series; I do believe this is the peak of the type of play style the developers were going for, and changed styles before the formula got stale, but I know others feel differently, and I can see that point of view.
Anyone else spent whole 8 hour play sessions taking random pedestrians up in a chopper to the tallest building and toss them off? First time we did we died laughing because we where awarded for it... Another favorite pass time was throwing satchel charges at pedestrians and watch them wail around until they walked into traffic and BOOM!

I agree 100%
Easily one of my favorite open world video games. I love everything about it.
When I play this game, I never have a game crash, never in my life, have I ever get a game crash in this game...
Both GTA IV and SR2 are good games...
My favorite Saints Row game of the series.
Mine too.
Mine is sr4
I remember getting it for Christmas in 2008, and man I can't get enough of it after all these years, what a classic sandbox game.
This game got the most satisfying boss fight cutscene imo
GTA IV was great, I can't deny that. However, I personally have alot more memories of having fun with SR2 and friends.
Great reviews, keep up the fantastic work sir.
I think GTA 4 is a great game, though I prefer the fast-paced action of SR2 a bit more.
Matthew Cool I distinctly remember you saying you don’t like GTA IV. Quite the surprise this comment is.
@@chrisdelgado4621 Yeah, it's a little complicated.
While I think GTA IV is a well-made game and it does have it's moments, it's drastic change in tone was a lot to take in, compared to the last two entries in the series.
@@mattc2306 its not the tone thats the problem, its just not well made except for liberty city, the writin the shootin the missions the lack of features, if you want somethin like 4 but well made play mafia 2 it has better shootin and movement and better drivin and you can customize the vehicles in it and the clothes you wanna wear, it has a better story too and even better collectibles
@@AliBazz But Mafia 2 doesn’t have a Free Roam option which sucks and the controls are kinda stiff like it’s stuck in the 6th generation at least GTA 4 let you do shit but still a great game tho.
Saaame dude, I would love to know how many hours I spent on it. It's definitely my most played game ever
This is my all time favorite game. It's such a classic and after this one the series went down hill.
The last good Saints Row. I really enjoyed it when I played it like 6 years after release. I then played SR3 and... well it was mildly entertaining. Oh right I almost forgot I also played SR4 in a weekend when it was free, completed it on Saturday, and then uninstalled it. Was underwhelmed by even SR3 standards.
saints row 2 was the best one before they went off the deep end with the others.
I never thought of it like that. But the way you described it makes it sound badass.
When carlos died i got rly sad and i thought about zombie carlos and how he was basically still alive to make me happier lmao
Me too
Such a high point of the series that there was no recovering from the fall that followed.
In some ways Saints row is so much better than GTA in my opinion.
I really loved this one, really deserves a remaster. My favourite one out of the series
The first one and second one will always be in my heart.
They have cruise control which allows you to choose your speed. Once you turn this one, its super easy to do drive-bys.
Saints row 2 is one of the best open world games of all time
Saints Row 2 was like the second coming of Christ when it came out. EVERYONE had to have it.
You Forget A 1000 Things A Day I think I remember seeing the promotional stuff before it came out, good times
That and Halo 3 and MW2
I found casualy Saint row 2 just like i did with the first one
Still missing the third one :/
Saints Row 2 is my favorite freeroaming game of all time, it’s so good, the only complaint I have is the frame rate but that’s it, I love Saints Row 2!
I was just binging your videos! I still can't believe you only have 40k subs, you're seriously one of the best!
He has one of the most bingeable channels on UA-cam in my opinion!
Cant believe its been 14 years. Its also mind-blowing that a game this beautiful fun and enormous came out only a year after bully.
10:30 there’s actually a 3rd way i discovered: simply start an activity, and exit the activity
Oh man the memories I have playing this back in 2009 high as a kite, good times
I absolutely love the first 2 Saints Row games, they're so fun, I wish they wouldn't have ruined them. I'd rather play Saints Row 2 over GTA IV any day.
The thing that I really like about SR2 is the mechanics of being able to smash post boxes (in SR4 you can...sort of do the same when you equip the laser katana) and best of all pick anything to use as a weapon, something I wish the later games had as well. Well executed review.
Looking back,no open world game has matched this games level of character customization.
Saints Row 2 was the best game in the series. It went completely down hill when they added super powers and made it less about gang control...
The PC version has mods that fix most issues specially Gentleman of the Row in which you can even personalize the features of the mod
I'm glad CD Projekt black ported it (rughly) to the pc market, so the modders could make it a proper playable game! Its a real ruff diamond on pc, but a BEAUTIFUL ruff diamond!
@@Cl04d lmao volition can't even properly fix the PC Port because CD Projekt has the source code and CDP won't return Volition's calls
It doesn't fix crashes
@@IskenderCaglarM41B441 it does for some pc's. its like you either can run it or not.
@@bonkboi420 Well they have the source source code now and a fix for pc is in the works.
I loved if you finish a branch of side activities, you'd get permanent bonuses like more health or more melee damage
Never had it crash on anything besides PC. Which needs the Gentlemen Of The Row mod to make it even somewhat stable consistently.
I crashed every couple of hours. Still played it though.
yeah sometime it frezzes for a few second and even crashes sometimes
Wrong. Never does for me
My favorite video game of all time.
GTA IV is just as replayable as this game. Hell, arguably more so than any other GTA game.
@@chrisdelgado4621 as a gta iv fan I entirely disagree 100%
This is the first time I've heard that voice option
You can gain infinite ammo by doing certain activities enough
joxer2112 yeah like if you do fuzz you get the kobra and infinite ammo
Who else remembers “gangsta bitch” lmao
Thank you for reviewing this
As a suggestion, after you're done with Saints row, could you do some of the assassin's creed games or Dragon age?
The biggest problem with the PC port is that the game's speed is tied to your processor clock speed. Most of the issues seem to spiral out from that decision. It was also a problem with Red Faction Guerilla.
I had no problem playing Saints Row 2 on PC a few years ago. Got it on GOG and applied a community-created fix patch and it was not a bugfest.
It's easily the best in the series, i replay it all the time and every time i feel like i find something new.
There’s an in game reason why the map from SR1 and SR2 are different is because there was an earthquake that hit the city in the 5 years your character is in a coma and that’s why church was bought and rebuilt by Ultor.
Is that Jacksepticeye in the thumbnail lol
Came looking for this comment, thanks haha.
I still shudder thinking about the infamous Prison Escape and the Brotherhood mission, Enemy of my Enemy on the cargo ship...
I'm really hyped for your review of the third
I absolutely love your reviews man, they are very in-depth and obviously you do a lot of research and editing for your videos, definitely you are very underrated!
Great video. This is my favorite open world game ever made, and in my opinion, one of the best. I've been playing it for over 10 years, and I still have a blast every time I load it up again. It never gets old, and there's never a shortage of stuff to do
I like watching reviews of games I own, sometimes they notice things I never noticed while playing.
My favourite in the series. Just love everything about it
Great review.
Have you seen gat out of hell
Finally a person who didn't call this game a GTA Clone. Thank good sir.
IMHO SR2 was simply the best of the SR games.
I just came back from an echocardiogram, during so I was thinking “I should play some saints row when I get home”. And here you are, reviewing another saints row. My second favourite in the series.
You say the mall is too long to cross on foot... I wouldn't know, I usually drove a car down there preferably the monster truck 😂
I started to love this game after watching this review I didn't even play it......I think it's better then gta iv at some points
Getting the dual kobras are a must for every play through
I played Saints Row 2 after GTA4 and thought it be a cheap imitation and was shocked that I liked it far, far better.
Brother, I'm so glad that you enjoyed this game. You trashed the first one which was revolutionary and great in its day. SR2 was one of my fondest games from memory, I played it Co-Op online with my mate via Xbox Live in 2008
Imagine all of the activities with a friend and a mic and playing through the super great storyline! Very happy you got to appreciate this fantastic game that seems to be forgotten.
Thanks again and I'll continue to sub :)
Cheers
GTA IV is way more polished. Saints Row was really fun though. But hearing that they started making Saints Row 2 before Saints Row 1 was released explains a lot about the lack of graphical detail.
The creativeness of Saints Row outweighs GTA IV though. Being able to customise almost everything is great and also being able to use real world objects to beat up your enemies with.
Imagine a GTA game with all the features that saints row 2 have but with the more superior engine of the GTA games. That would be an masterpiece
"honey why do we owe 5 million dollars the plastic surgeon?" "I went to the plastic surgeon to change my hair and walking style!"
😄
For as much as I don't like SR3, this is one of the improvements I do appreciate so I think their good.
It's great to finally see you review Saints Row 2!
Fuzz and fightclub are legendary
Ah, just what I needed on a Monday! Thanks, Colour Shed!
TBH IMO this is the best one before it got all goofy AF and out there if you looking for a gang crime game kinda like GTA sa this it baby good video
(Saints Row)is the cousin you’re parents(gta iv) keep away from you because he’s bad influence but you have the most fun with him.
