I just bought the 40mm f1.2 and it’s true that it makes a wonderful combo. I paid mine around 650€ so 3 times the price of the plasticky 40mm f2.0 but I can confirm it s worth changing for it : all, metal (including the bayonet… something Nikon seems,to have forgotten on its SE line…), a focus ring easy to use and to focus with the Zf, a one third of stops aperture ring as smooth as the other and the best : the optical performance : at full aperture to f2 it gives a wonderful light dispersion which reminds us the smoothness of the old lenses and starting at f2.8 it becomes crazy sharp. So it s a kind of best of the 2 worlds one lens. To summarize I would say it s the lens Nikon should have done for its Zf… And I hope a 28mm f 2.0 will be delivered shortly. These lenses are so pleasant to use and what a look !!!

The 40 f/1.2 (that I got from Grays) is superb, razor sharp stopped down - the 50 APO that you showed looks lovely so will add that to the wish list.

40mm f1.2 is my favorite! When looking for a wider angle for my Zf kit I was disappointed to find that Voigtlander didn't make anything in the 24mm-ish (full frame) range. I opted for the 26mm pancake which is fine.

Hi Becky & Kon. Would love to see you both test the latest Voigtlander F-mount lenses on the ZF w/ a Nikon FTZ II adapter. It would be interesting to compare functionality and results to similar (though not comparable) Z-mount glass. I'm thinking the 40mm f/2 vs. the 40mm 1.2, the 55mm f/1.2 vs. the 50mm f/1, etc. Love what y'all do. Cheers from Chicago :)

Thank you for your always SUPERB photography videos! As a Nikon Z8 system landscape, product, macro and ocassional wildlife photographer obsessed with image sharpness and detail, I'm obtaining excellent results with the Z8 tripod-mounted with several Nikkor Z S lenses, including the NIkkor S 50 f/1.8 and the extremely sharp manual focus IRIX 150 f/2.8 Macro lens. However, your images and comments on the Voigtlander 65 Macro lens have me wondering if this lens is as sharp (or sharper) than either the IRIX 150 f/2.8 Macro or the NIkkor Z S 50 f/1.8. Thank you once again!

Very cool Vid :) been waiting for it a bit since you made the 40mm f1,2 video a while back. I have been toying with different adaptors for the Zf since i got it, like the M, M42 and OM one. But always also eyed the VL lenses and tried to get a reason to buy one after selling something i "needed" less ;)
And that day came a few days ago when i finally after researching the VL lenses and which one to get, got an offer for a used 40mm f1,2. I decided the 50 was out of budget for now but also that i liked the size of the 40 and the fact that it "behaved" like two lenses like you also talked about.
Its such a beautiful lens and just match the ZF in the best way possible. Its also a very fun lens to use and i really do like the character you get up to F2 approximately :)
Would have been nice to see some images attached to every lens just as a sample after each was mentioned, but i know you have videos up for some of them as well. But would have been cool to get a comparison "live" between the when it comes to style :)
Anyhow, great video and look forward to the one on Nikkors too! :) Personal favorites there would be the 105mm f2,5 Ai-s , 28mm f2,8 AI-s, and the 180mm f2,8 AI-s :D
    Regards Martin.

I have not yet bought into the Nikon Z system, but, it is good to see that these lenses are available, and well-regarded as performing well. I have been using the M-mount versions of the 50mm APO Lanthar and Nokton 50mm f/1.0 on a Leica M10, and, on Nikon DSLRs, have used the 40mm f/2.8 SL II and the Nokton 58mm SL II. It is likely that I will acquire a Z camera, sooner or later, and the Zf is the most tempting of the Z bunch, yet…

I can only confirm what you are saying. I own a Nikon Zf and a Nikon Z8. The Z8 goes with all my Nikon glass - when want to be quick and as perfect as I can be. The only limitation is myself when using the 135 plena or the 105 macro, or the 50 1.8, etc. etc. But if I want to be playful and if I don't care if I'm going to have keepers or not: I take am Zf and either the 50 Noct 1.0 or the 35 APO 2.0. The 35 is quite easy to tame too - and she is producing very very nice images. The 50 1.0 on the ohter hand demands full concentration and extreme dedication. It can easily happen that there are very few keepers after a walk through the city. But if I nail it - then this camera delivers incredible images, second to none. Extremely beautiful. Note: I have not bought the 40 yet -- but I'm sure I will..... Thank you for your work - I love the format and I love your knowledgabel but still entertaining presentation.

Update: I acquired the 40mm 1.2 too. Very nice. The three Voigländers and the 12 Nikon glasses can do anything for me what I need. I tend to take the Voigländers when I want to enjoy myself, when I want to experiment and when I go where I have already been a million times and still want a fresh image. I take the Nikon primes (50, 85, 135 or even some zooms) when I have to deliver - when I'm in danger that my wife scolds me for not catching the moment, when I'm going somewhere new, where I probably never go to again. So all my lenses have a purpose for me. ;-)

Nice one! Yes,F Mount makes more sense - great on F-Mount film and Df, but still useable with adapter on Z... I can't help but think Nikon miss a trick by ignoring manual aperture lenses (kinda old news, but hey...). Surely Nikon could afford a Japan-made 'heritage' line of lenses and film cameras? Ironic that the ever sharper lenses have created an opportunity for third-party brands. But props to Voigtlander - some of their F-mount glass is definitely going to join my Grays (great shop!) bought Df, FM3a and FM2, filling some gaps in my pre-Ai collection.

Voigtlander lenses are made in Japan, so are many Sigma lenses and optics for telescopes, binoculars, gun scopes etc. The intellectual property and design for Nikon all resides in Japan. Japan still has a thriving optics industry, but Nikon have chosen to outsource manufacture for cost. Fair enough, but Nikon should look to their heritage for at least some of their range.

On Sony, 50mm f2 APO is the best 50mm for landscape photography. I'm sure the same is true on Nikon.
65mm and 110mm lenses give a lesson to all lenses on color correction, especially the total lack of LOCA no matter how hard you try to force it.
Sony and Nikon have different approaches to manual focusing with electronic contact lenses. Both approaches work brilliantly with the latest mirrorless cameras. No need to be afraid of manual focusing as it makes the process a lot more enjoyable. However it can make the process frustrating as well depending on your subject matter.
Voigtlander have taken the modern manual focus lens crown for photography lenses from Zeiss. A small trivia is that many manual focus Zeiss lenses (including Otus) and Voigtlander lenses are made in Japan by Cosina. I think some of the of glass used is 100% the same (which results in similar properties) although the Zeiss and Voigtlander rendering approach is different.
However I will say this, if you want that retro look, slap on an F mount converter (which sux tbh because Nikon gave up on aperture indexing) and use any of the Nikon AI/AIS or even pre-AI lenses. The legacy is there. Even the most retro/character look Voigtlander is much more modern compared to some lenses that are 50 year old designs. They will be awkward due to flange distance designed for a mirror messing up center of gravity. Manual focusing will be a bit harder if there are no electrical contacts but it's the real RETRO!

  • @y.rousso

Good. Thanks for this. If you can dig out any information on the intentions of voightlander or any other manufacturer to produce any new lenses made for the Zf (manual or auto focus + Z mount CPU lenses with contacts + real aperture rings, all at the same time) then that would be something worth knowing and anticipating for. I mostly use my old Minolta glass with my Zf + the voightlander 40mm 1.2. The advantage of the 40mm is that it is a cpu lens and it plays better with focus assist. Apart from that, my Minolta lenses found a glorious new life with the Zf. I am lucky to have a 28mm f/2, a 50mm f/1.7, a 135mm f/2.8 and a 70-210mm f/4. Super happy with all of them.

Happened to 2 of my copies too, luckily I could just return it to the dealer… as it started around a week after I got it.
Now that Cosina is pushing out so many different lenses in higher quantities you definitely notice some slight cut in their previously flawless quality.
My 3rd copy, being super close in serial number to the 2 returned copies, so far holds up well, but it is still sad that you now even have to fear Voigtländer lenses to fail on you.
All my F mount Voigts were and are pretty much perfect in their function.

Hadn’t thought of buying the Zf until you mentioned face detect in manual lenses, currently using z9 and Z6ii , I like using my 8 ais lenses as well as 8 OM Zuiko manual lenses on the Z6ii, am waiting to see what the Z6iii is like before I decide what to go for, also use the 28 and 40mm Z lenses on Z6ii plus 9 S lenses on my Z9. Still shooting film every week F2AS, F3, F4, F6, F100 and FA. The F2 was the first camera I bought back in 1976. Thinking I may buy the 40/1.2 Voigtlander,I’ll see you at the shop.😊😊😊

I currently have a ZF but no lens yet. I’ve been away from photography for a while (apart from iPhone) and have the 50mm f1 on order. It will be my only lens for a time. I really wanted the classic 50mm experience but I’m torn about getting two of the other Voigtlander lenses for the same price (35/50). Do you think I should go with the f1 and embrace the limitations of that one lens setup? Just not sure… I’ll be shooting around the city and love architecture so I know the 50mm isn’t the obvious choice.

Are these manual diaphragm lenses or automatic diaphragm lenses? That is, if you want to focus at the widest aperture for accuracy, do you have to then manually turn the aperture ring to get to the working aperture?

Actually, the ZF will not only give the green box, it will also give you green arrows indicating which way to focus.
When you nail it, you will have arrows on each side of the box facing inwards.
Zooming in removes this, so I wouldn't recommend doing this.

M is arguably more flexible, but requires an adaptor, loses the electronics, and may have some additional cons.
Z is very nice, but restricted to Nikon - no way to adapt.

    • @satejonetsu
      @satejonetsu 4 місяці тому

I had the same thought and decided to go M mount. The Voigtlander VM-Z mount has a close focusing helicoid and they also make it for Sony E mount. If I want to use the lenses on L Mount, I use a Shoten close focusing adapter which is small as well. Since I like manual focusing, going M mount keeps my options open. Those Z mount lenses do look sexy though....

    • @kjltube
      @kjltube 4 місяці тому +1

With the Z versions close focusing is built in already (and actually closer than the E versions (40mm f1.2 for example).
The Z mount versions give focus conformation via the face tracking green box, and finally the Z mount versions focus in the Nikon Pentax direction which is the opposite to Leica and Sony. This can be annoying if you are using other Nikon lenses.
In short, if you intend to keep the lens buy Z mount as I did.

Movies and videos should be made in manual, since AF tends to screw the photage up. No matter the camera, since the camera cant read your idea of the photage.
Which is why pro's uses the manual Cine lenses so they can take full control over the video photages.
