Photographing smoke is easy to do and its something that everyone including children can do. Please comment and share to show how easy it is. I would love to see your creations so please post them and tag me so I can see them. All you need is a DSLR camera and a couple of accessories listed below. What do we use to photograph smoke, a single incense stick, something that’s safe and easy to control the smoke inside the house. When we light the incense stick, after a few moments the incense stick creates amazing artistic plumes of smoke. To change the shapes of smoke plumes, gently tap the table where the incense stick tray is sitting.
This is just a fun way of capturing light traveling through smoke but seeing how the natural beauty the ways that plumes of smoke travel.

Fantastic! I can't wait to try it. Many thanks, also for the PIXLR tip. I've been using the Canon software for my RAW images and GIMP for my JPEGs, but PIXLR looks great.

Hi just watched your video was really helpful going to give this a try, one thing tho did you have the camera set on manual or program? Thank you for your help

Thank you for your comment. The camera would be set in manual mode so you have complete control. A guide for the settings would be:
      • ISO 100
      • Shutter 1/100
      • Aperture F 11
      • White Balance flash
      • Raw or JPG file
      Flash
      • Manual setting 1/8 power
      • Adjust backward and forwards depending on your test shots

Helpful video - good project for my teenager taking GCSE photography. One problem we are having is that the background isn't black enough- and the smoke isn't bright enough - any ideas to get a better contrast?

SIS&BRO Thank you for the comment. As a guide to ensure your black background is as black as possible. Make sure that the ambient light is off, such as room light. If off, there maybe too much spill from your flash, so you need to add more of a larger flag to protect the background from stray light. If the smoke isn’t bright enough your can move the flash forward to the smoke or increase the output power. You could also change the aperture from F11 to F8 or lower. I hope this helps?

Great video. I'm always looking for creative ideas to try. Is there a particular reason why you set your shutter speed to 1/100th rather than just going up to the maximum sync speed for the flash?

    • @OnLocationEvents

Thank you for that. The greatest thing about sync speed as well as all manual modes, you can adjust to get the maximum you want in other areas like aperture etc. It also helps when your are restricted by some equipment to be able for adjust in another areas to capture what you require.

I was also wondering why the sync speed was lower than the flash sync speed.
It is the power of the flash that determines the aperture to use, not the speed of the shutter.
Even if you use a really long exposure, say half a second, when using a flash as the only light source, you still won't be able to adjust the aperture relative to the shutter speed, in order to get a brighter image.
If there is ambient light, using a slow shutter with flash will produce an image with still smoke and blurry smoke , which could be interesting.

Enjoyed it. I couldn't see the flags as they were black as well. Struggling to picture the size of them and how to use. Do you have a link by any chance? I bet your house smells intense now 😉

Really enjoyed watching this video, its inspired me to pick up a camera again - typically though batteries need charging.
Could you use a sheer coloured scarf or tissue paper over the flash to change the colour?

    • @OnLocationEvents
      @OnLocationEvents  4 роки тому +1

Thank you for that. Yes, you can certainly add something in front of the flash to change the color without having to do further post-production. The only disadvantage is you can't' do much to the image after if you need a neutral image. We use color gels which you place over the hot shoe flash, for loads of colors this is a cheap way with these gels - amzn.to/2wuoM5K

It was fascinating but seems simple but not sure My camera is up to it, can you use a small old 15yr digital camera?

Thank you for your comment. If your camera has a manual mode and can fire a controllable flash, then yes it doesn’t matter how old the camera and flash is. Funny enough the camera I did this shoot with is 12 years old.
