great movie! chivalry, unconditional love, compassion for not killing another human being and not rushing to kill other party before the true intentions were uncover. don't get to see the chivalry act nowadays which is I envy so much about Japanese samurai in the feudal japan.

He loved her deeply and will live the rest of his life honoring his late wife. It is "Giri" that is the burden hardest to bear and repaying with honor. Thus, he could not accept the other lady's love that is "Ninjo" ; human feelings. Oftentimes, 'Ninjo' complements while opposes 'Giri'. Really, hard to fulfill both at same time.
