- Decided to make a comparison video between the original uncensored theatrical version and the 1998 Cartoon Network censored version of a scene from the 1956 Bugs Bunny cartoon short "Wideo Wabbit".
This cartoon, in the original theatrical version, has the infamous 'You Beat Your Wife' (a parody on the then-popular comedy quiz game show "You Bet Your Life" in the 1950s hosted by Groucho Marx) where Bugs Bunny, disguised as Groucho, tricks Elmer Fudd by asking some questions about "beating his wife" until his cover is blown.
Due to numerous complaints about younger kids misinterpreting the "You Beat Your Wife" name as a joke about spousal abuse in the United States back in the late-1980s when ABC aired this cartoon once as part of "The Bugs Bunny and Tweety Show", this sequence has been drastically edited when shown on Cartoon Network and Boomerang: In this new "THIS VERSION 1998" WB dubbed version print, all references to "You Beat Your Wife" have been removed by not only cutting out dialogue bits where the "You Beat Your Wife" name has been mentioned (making the dialogue jumpy and near-incomprehensible), yet the name "You Beat Your Wife" on the podium has been digitally removed cleanly (the same technique used by Cartoon Network to censor offending imagery, blood, gunshots, and nudity in its anime programming), hence making the podium one color. This censored 1998 dubbed version of "Wideo Wabbit" by CN USA also appeared on the European VHS tape "Wideo Wabbit" in 1998.

@@yosefdemby8792 Really? I thought it WAS Groucho. The timing for when this was created overlaps with Groucho's presence. Perhaps you know in which of Groucho's movies he used this line? I remember the scene, but not the movie where he and his brothers had snuck into an exclusive club of executives but were approached by a servant asking them to leave. Groucho immediately turned the tables on the servant by loudly posing the question, drawing attention to the servant and his answers. The servant lost that one...hilarious!
Best part, it’s Bugs’ favorite comedian (no matter the era).
Notice that Daws Butler is voicing Bugs' 'Groucho' impersonation, and Mel voices Bugs after he takes off the glasses.
Interesting that the “you beat your wife” references were cut on kid-targeted channels but the martini joke stayed.
I wonder if the reason this was cut out was due to it implying domestic violence, which became a big issue after Simpson killed his ex-wife and was discovered that he beat her ass in the past.

The whole scene was retained on ABC, which instead cut Elmer shooting at Bugs but leaving rabbit-outline bullet holes in the wall, a candelabra full of dynamite (while Bugs is impersonating Liberace), and Elmer getting hit by arrows and a tomahawk when he stumbles upon a filming of a western.

I remember perfectly that only once on Cartoon Network they broadcast it without censorship, it must have been in the toonix era and at that time I did not know what that phrase on the poster meant but now I understand censorship.
As what I could recall, this cartoon aired over in Latin America on Cartoon Network, Boomerang and Tooncast only as the censored 1998 print with the "You Beat Your Wife" references edited out. You mean to say one time during CN La's Toonix era they aired the uncensored (but as the unrestored late-1980s/early-1990s VHS print)? Lucky you; CN USA hasn't shown this cartoon uncensored since 2001 😮😮
@@kingandrewcecil348 And I remember it perfectly the time they broadcast it, at that time it was already early morning (that is, in my country, which is Peru) and the Acme Hour was about to be played and the first short that he gave was the same one where I perfectly saw that the poster was with said phrase. At that time I did not know any English but I remember well that the phrase was there and it was the dubbed version of 1998, it is not the first time that I see an uncensored Looney Tunes short being broadcast on Cartoon Network since there are others who have transmitted without any editing.
Wonder if Groucho ever saw this and what did he think?

As A little boy, I NEVER thought of the title possibly referencing spousal abuse. I thought it mean a man beats his wife,, in like a board game, or competitive sports, you know winning a match against her. Not until I was about a young man did I realize the truth

SCENE: Groucho conned his way into an exclusive club, but was spotted by a servant and quietly told to leave. Groucho then commanded the attention of all patrons by posing the line to the servant. The servant first answered 'NO!, which drew raised eyebrows from members. So the then said 'Yes', drawing even more scrutiny. The servant then gave up and left, while Groucho remained. Which movie was it??

I feel like they should've just removed that scene completely; the way it plays now is really awkward and doesn't make sense AT ALL.
I got a feeling why Cartoon Network did these edits on this scene on Wideo Wabbit was they were testing the digital censorship (ala 4Kids Entertainment) before they would try to use it on their then-acquired anime programming such as Sailor Moon, Dragon Ball and Naruto.
"This edit on Blitz Wolf is however sloppy; CN just blanked out the 'Japs' word from this scene using yellow paint (this edit looks as if it was blank-oed using the application MS Paint)" That's why I said that it was a bad edit job. They had all this money to clothe naked Japanese girls with digitally-rendered bras and panties, but couldn't spare a few bucks to properly blank out a racial slur? Oh, and I did see the sloppy edit on Blitz Wolf, on a special Cartoon Network did about World War II cartoons ("Toonheads: The Wartime Cartoons"). They also cut the part where the pigs bomb Tokyo, but that edit was done so well (and the scene didn't really feel germane to the story), I didn't notice it until I actually saw the uncut version.
That time CN did the edits on Blitz Wolf in 1995 was before Turner had the ability and the budget to do proper digital editing on their cartoons, which they would later acquire after the Time Warner-Turner merger. This would also explain why during the Powerhouse era there are Cartoon Network IDs that use clips from other cartoons where random objects/plot devices have been digitally replaced by the 1992 Cartoon Network logo, take for example the Looney Tunes/Tom and Jerry CN idents which use footage of classic cartoons (Examples of CN Ids I'm talking about are found here: ua-cam.com/video/4UrlntPBGLk/v-deo.html)

This might of been one of the earliest uses of a groucho marx mask by a cartoon character ( i think )

Yeah, censorship only ruins everything. In fact, this "You Beat Your Wife" scene is practically harmless as no spouses were actually harmed in this scene, and yet SJWs and soccer moms mistook it as actual representations of spousal abuse just because of the "You Beat Your Wife" name (when actually, it's not), even though that name is supposed to be a parody of Groucho Marx's popular game show on TV at the time "You Bet Your Life".

Sometimes censorship does improve works. Its almost never intentional but it does happen.
The original is better. By the way Daws Butler voiced Bugs imitating Groucho Marx in the scene. Later on in the short he did the same thing with Bugs doing an Art Carney impression.

It isn't Groucho Marx; sounds more like Daws Butler, doing an okay-but-not-the-greatest Groucho voice impression.
@@vincentsartain3061 Yep, Daws Butler was doing Looney voices by the 50's (like the Honeymousers toons), which makes it the only time Butler voiced Bugs.
@@ericjanssen394 Not long before his death Butler was a guest on a local radio program of the town I was living in at the time; they allowed call-ins from the listening audience and I made it through with my phone call to converse with Mr. Butler, live and on the air. Unfortunately, the questions I had for him were really pretty dumb, and Butler wasn't much enthused with me and my goofy inquiries, one of them relating to the similarity I had always noted between Butler's "Snagglepuss" and Bert Lahr's "Cowardly Lion" from THE WIZARD OF OZ. In my ignorance at the time I hadn't known that there had in the late 1960's been some bad blood between Lahr and Butler, the former, upon seeing a cereal brand commercial being pitched by Hanna-Barbera's Snagglepuss, being furious over Butler's vocal imitations of Lahr's voice when Butler was voicing Snagglepuss; In order to avoid lawsuit hassles HB started flashing voice actor credits to Daws Butler in subsequent Snagglepuss-hosted cereal ads, to make it clear that the voice actor behind Snagglepuss was NOT Bert Lahr.

Mel Blanc was arguably the greatest voice comedian there ever was, but I don't know of many of his celebrity contemporaries whose voices he could mimic to great effect; other voice actors like Daws Butler and Paul Frees were much better at that sort of thing.
Eureka! I always noticed the similarity between Groucho and Bugs...
Just saw this uncensored version on Japanese Cartoon Network and was slack jawed reading the 'you beat your wife' sign on the lectern and had to look up the clip of the english dub. Insane they published this for kids in 1956. ..I wish i could recall if I saw this as a kid in the 80s.

In the Japanese dub, Bugs is voiced by Kappei Yamaguchi, who also voices Ranma Saotome from "Ranma ½", Inuyasha from "Inuyasha", and Tororo from "Sergeant Keroro", amongst others anime voice roles.
BTW, as of 2011 "Wideo Wabbit" is currently airing as the restored Golden Collection V3 print on Cartoon Network Japan, and yes, it's uncensored.
In the Golden Collection the spanish dub is uncensored too.
Is that the old Spanish dub or a new, reconstructed Spanish dub made for the DVD release? As far as I know, the first new Spanish dub (Which was first made for the "Wideo Wabbit" 1998 VHS which contained this cartoon's 1998 dubbed version) is censored to remove the You Beat Your Wife references

Okay so I checked my Romanian VHS tape with this episode. The scene was uncensored but the Romanian subtitles were a bit censored I believe...
So what kind of Romanian Looney Tunes VHS was it? I'm pretty sure that the Wideo Wabbit 1998 VHS has this scene censored though; so it must've been one of the earlier VHS tapes from before 1998.

All censored dialogue were anything that mention that "offensive" line "You Beat Your Wife".
Unlike Cartoon Network USA's edit, Kids WB's edit of this scene is rather tacky, as in a few frames it flickers on and off in a way that even the most naive viewers could notice it!

Psh. These cartoons were made back whenbeing PC wasn't a thing. I mean, yeah, you did have the Hays Office making sure the shorts weren't too obscene, but that's only in cases of swearing and sex. It wouldn't be until they aired on TV and the changing times that followed that the Looney Tunes cartoons would be cut to pieces. Thank God for DVD and Internet where at least a good chunk can be found uncensored, legally or otherwise.

Mandela effect in play - I thought the show was "you bet your wife"
No "Mandella Effect" on MY end; I first saw this cartoon as a preteen in the 1970's and had already seen reruns of You Bet Your Life; if others have experienced your same "M.E." then they missed out on the play on words and the "damned if you answer one way, damned if you answer the other way" question that Bugs posed to Elmer.

Yeah, adult cartoons like Family Guy actually contain more politically incorrect stuff such as racism (I admit, racism and racial stereotyping in adult cartoons seem much more blatant and hostile than in the classic cartoons), violence and sexual themes than these classic cartoons, which makes these cartoon classics look rather clean, tame and wholesome in comparison. Even the excessive and disgusting use of butt jokes and twerking in kids' cartoons of the 2010s decade like Breadwinners, Teen Titans Go! and The Powerpuff Girls 2016 also makes the Looney Tunes cartoons seem much more wholesome in comparison.

"Have you stopped beating your wife?" is a traditional idiom for a "Loaded Question". As such it's a historical part of English rhetoric theory. I think it should be included on that basis.
