My current set up is 3.50’s in my Dana 44 and my Chrysler 9.25 rear axles and I have 33’s right now and my truck is extremely slow. Especially accelerating. I think the first thing I will do is get the gears swapped to bigger than I should and go to 4.10’s.

.12 x the tire diameter will give you the ratio you need , choose the closest ratio from factory

When I did my lift and tires 14 years ago, I went from 28 inch tires to 31 and had a gear ratio of 3.27 in the rear. Per this math I should get 3.62 new gear ratio (closest would be 3.72). I made a guess at the gears I should put in and chose 4.11 gears on a 5 speed manual tranny. I have issues with keeping up with traffic from a dead stop, keeping up to speed on hills and CANNOT tow worth a damn with this gearing choice. I have to press the pedal 3/4 to Wide Open Throttle while towing and this was with a 5x10 trailer with minimum items on it. I would have been better suited at 4.56 for gear choices according to the tables that are out there. If I followed this math, I'd be in a worse position than I already am.

It sounds highly likely that you have other issues going on. The higher the gear ratio, the more quickly you will accelerate. Basic physics. The flip side is the gear will "run out" sooner and your overall top speed will be slower.
      Perhaps an analogy.....
Think of riding a bike with more than one gear. Say a mountain bike....
If you're in 1st gear, you have so much torque that you pull up a wheelie just by pedaling; however, your max speed is going to be super slow. Every time you go up in gear (larger tire size....numerically smaller rear end gear) you have to push harder to get going, but you're able to go faster with the same amount of pedal strokes.

going from 18" to 20" with 3.15 gears would require an update rear gear to 3.5. my question is, do i need to calibrate the speedo or will it be reading it correctly w mph and distance travelled.

Really good video sir. I have one question please, I'm changing the tires in my car, I had 265 wide and now it is 325 wide, the tall is about the same in both cases, my question is if this calculation is also useful considering the tire width instead of the height, thank you very much!

Went through a dozen videos to figure this out. My Bronco II has 26.5 inch stock tires and 3 stock final drives. Now it has a set of 29s and I have been having issues with shifting. Been looking to change the final drive but couldn't find ANYTHING on the math. This guy has it broke down to where even a dummy like me can figure it out.

Easy math..take a tape measure around the outside of the new tires..ok now the old tire..divide by the number..ok lets look at this example .09 or 9 percent difference..at 100 miles a hour your speedometer will be 9 percent lower of 91 mph..ok on drive train..9 percent less power to the wheels..1000 ft lbs of torque 9 percent less..etc..but the advantage may be a more durable tire like a 19.5 instead of 16 inch tire..rewatch the video, in math each side of the equation is the same..so the only variable is tire size..

HOW ... do I figure axle ratio using bigger tires on back, smaller on front with 4x4 drive? my question applies to an ATV

    • @xmo552
      @xmo552 4 роки тому

      Algebra 👍😉
Base your whole mindset on the rear axle as if you only had a 2wd 2x4 rear wheel drive.
      1)Choose rear tires
      2)Choose front tires
      3)Choose rear gear
      4) figure out the corresponding front gear ratio to match the rear
      Edit: actually just do this
      👇😁👇
      It's the same thing.
Watch "How to Choose Your Axle Gear Ratio" on UA-cam
      ua-cam.com/video/oDVpyhKEbaw/v-deo.html
In the video he shows you how to figure it out assuming you installed larger tires and he shows you how to "correct it" back to stock by gearing appropriately. It's exactly the same as you want to do. You're trying to match different gears and tires so everything is still happy.
Substitute his BEFORE gear and tires to his AFTER gear and tires
      With your:
      FRONT gear and tires
      To your
      REAR gear and tires.
      That's it.
      There are 4 variables:
      Front tire
      Front gear
      Rear tire
      Rear gear
As long as you have 3 of those you can figure out the missing variable.
You can also flip this math around to figure out tire sizes to match the gearing if you have the gears 1st.
Reply back to this if you need help.

This math didn't work for me. I have 35-12.50. Stock tire is 31.9. And I have 3.55 gears by your math I need 3.08. By my math I need 3.88. So I'm going with 3.73 or 4.10. I haven't decided yet
