  • Wildlife in urban areas can be hard to come by but there's always more than there might appear to be at first site! I've been exploring Walthamstow Wetlands recently in search of kingfishers and other wildlife, it's a lovely site in North East London and it's so important these spaces exist both for people and wildlife!

Nice video, awesome kingfisher! Some of my favourite local wildlife is a local colony of fulmars. There are only around 30 of them, but living on the south coast it's great to be able to see them.

Thanks Johann! I often think the local wildlife is the most meaningful and it’s great you’ve got them close by!

Hey Olly, I live on the greater Montreal area in Quebec. I know that wildlife does not always rhyme with city life but there is always wildlife that make city their home, we just need to know where to look. A few years ago at the very crowded Montreal botanical garden, we had a nesting pair of Cooper's hawks with 2 chicks and one of Merlins with 4 chicks. The Merlins built their nest near the main entry where a lot of people were walking and chilling. In July the 4 chicks were flying around and most people were oblivious to them, thinking they were just a few birds like any other. Thing is people do not look, they do not know what is around them. At 15 minutes from my place, I have a provincial park where I know I can photograph up to 3 barred owls hunting. This is paradise! :-)

Wow that sounds fantastic! Great to hear about other wildlife around the world that can be found in urban areas!

Saw a great blue heron at a city pond in Phoenix, Arizona today- Not a bird you see every day in the desert. It was a pleasant surprise.

That’s really cool! Not one we get in the UK very often unfortunately.

Great video mate, and great that you addressed the common issue of finding wild places in such urban environments such as London. Beautiful footage of the Kingfisher, what an amazing encounter!

Loved this video Olly as I know this place like the back off my hand, been going there for years, and yeah it is an incredible site with the odd rare bird turning up like s Spoonbill a while ago. Next to the hide you were in is a pylon that is popular with the Peregrine falcons that can often be seen eaten their pigeons up in it. Also great for foxes in the early morning and amazing insect life there too. The nearby Water Works Nature Reserve is well worth a visit. Have a great week 😀

Thanks Raymond, glad you enjoyed it! I didn’t realise the falcons could be seen from there so I’ll keep an eye out next time, saw a fox on my first visit but forgot to put a card in my camera 😅 thanks, you too!

@@wildlifewithollyit's possible these are the Stratford peregrines, I've spotted them there over the last few years but still investigating. Lock 17 flats by the canal, is one of there territorial posts, they have a huge territory compared to the pair near me in bishopsgate

Yes Olly! Very pleased that you finally managed to find a local kingfisher. Love walthamstow wetlands, looking forward to more of your content from there as the year goes on
