This was a delightful boot review. You can write the next great American novel or review a pair of boots, I enjoy your content and your perspective on life, I’m here for the journey either way.
I'm glad the storytelling still comes through even when it's about boots! 😂 Hoping I can get a better sound setup for the next one, audio was pretty rough here...
My wife spends almost all her time outside the house in boots like this. She has her summer pair and winter pair. She's always in the woods and mud, enjoying nature or on the coast, searching for seashells, sea glass, or old bottles that wash up. Say hi to Bob for me.
Hey Isaac, this was interesting and helpful for me, not an annoyance at all. I've been watching your videos from the beginning and a Patreon member (happily) and I feel the need to ask you to consider being less hard on yourself. You're a regular guy who has had some exceptional experiences and are just trying to pay your bills like the rest of us. It's what makes you who you are and relatable. You have nothing to live up to or prove. You're pretty great exactly as you are. Just sayin.
Well, thank you! I appreciate that. I don't really feel like I'm trying to "prove" anything necessarily, I'm just very weary of living on the edge of disaster like I have been for so long and very eager to get some kind of career going again. If you're talking about all the hemming and hawwing I did in this video, it's just because I've never done an "ad" before and it feels very off-brand for the channel, but I'm trying to explore diverse ways of scraping together a living...
Yeah, I don't see me ever doing just straightforward "Here is the product, here are the pros and cons" kind of reviews. I need to be able to mix it up and make an adventure out of it. :)
This was a very pleasant informational ad and of course I fully support the Bob appearance. The lonely scrub brush remnant of your outdoor dishwashing days made me laugh and also made me happy you have running water.
I felt the same thing, remembering those times...washing dishes outside in freezing cold water while the wind howled and wasps tried to get a bite...I think the kitchen sink is the single greatest luxury of the modern home. I'd choose a sink over a toilet and shower any day.
I love that Bob seemed to enjoy participating in the review: everything from sniffing the boots, to joining you hiking and running up the trees! I image Bob approves of these boots and gives them 2 paws up, way up! Overall I think you did a great review, especially when you compared these boots to what you are currently using and explained how they work. I had to laugh though when you mentioned the shit bucket. I actually yelled noo, not the shit bucket, then laughed some more. I like your videos, the way you story tell and how open and honest you are about how you are living. it's refreshing & I'm here for it!
Thank you! Yeah, Bob joining the show is always golden. He really does love to participate in anything I'm doing. When I was building that outhouse he always wanted to take his naps right in the middle of the construction zone. 😂 Don't worry though, the shit bucket is purely a historical relic now! For the Museum of Bad Times.
Your boot review was "real" and I liked that you fit it into a day of ordinary life. You cracked me up when you got to the demonstration involving the dishpan and mentioning of the shit bucket. Your humbleness and sense of humor make interesting videos, which have also inspired me to order your first book of the Warm Bodies series. Zombies aren't generally my genre for reading material, but I sampled a few pages, and your writing style is very entertaining. Really looking forward to it. Now I can hunker down during a big snowstorm arriving here in Maine, and ride it out with a chipmunk who likes to come inside. :-) You and Bob have a great weekend!
Awesome, I'm so glad to hear good things about this uncomfortable experiment! We'll see if it ever happens again. And just so you know, I had no interest in the zombie genre either when I wrote that book! I dipped in, wrote the series, and dipped out. :) Hope you enjoy.
I love when they walk with us!Cats of course. My guys follow me to the beach. If they try to go to the Boardwalk with me then I have to go back and put them in the house.😺😺😺☺️
Comments are the youtube equivalent of going "Wooo!" at a concert. Doesn't have to be much substance to them, it's just nice to know people are out there. :)
I like the style! Many adverts are "in your face" or feel like they're being forced on you. This was relaxed, and the openness & transparency was great! This was just "Hey, I'm a guy with a cat and here's some cool boots and what I think of them". As for your audience that you don't know about, I'm from the UK / London and work in the city. Maybe consider doing a community post on youtube and ask - you might be surprised how far you reach!
Thanks! The only way I will do sponsored stuff is if I'm doing it as "me" and can find a way to work it naturally into the story I'm telling out here. Definitely not gonna be just dropping scripted ad content into the middle of my videos.
Well it has been 2 weeks of me avoiding this video and now I kind of want to slap myself because I should have known you would ace it! Never thought I would enjoy watching a boot review. Nice job.
Hahaha I appreciate that so much! It really was an experiment more than anything else, just to see if I could do a video about something profoundly uninteresting and maybe still make it fun. I've always been kinda tickled by the idea of taking sponsorships and subverting them into real entertainment somehow. I hope I get more offers so I can keep playing with it...
If I am not living in California right now, I would buy one to try it out. Thanks for the content still. I find it just as entertaining as the other non-commercial ones you made. ❤
Congrats to your first sponsor post! You did well. It was a very entertaining video, what with emotional outhouse music, deep thoughts about Goretex contra neoprene rubber boots (best in winter and cool temps, I guess, I have a pair of Muck Boots that comes to use when Uppsala gets a lot of snow. That's in Sweden.) vs cheap standard rubber boots and also racing/treeing Bob. Didn't glimpse his perfect nose this time, but there's always the next time?
I have those simple pair of rain boots cause that's all I need, except I paid forty for the pretty swans on them, lol. I enjoyed the video you gave a good demonstration of the boots 👢. I enjoy all your videos regardless. Seeing Bob racing up that tree was a treat.
Yeah, I think the cheap ones are fine for occasional casual use. For heavy winter use where you're slopping around in mud and deep snow for months though, you need something more versatile. Those cheap boots would scrape the hair off the back of my legs!
Not your usual poetic self 😅 life and cats is much more fun to yap about right.. congrats on your first sponsor and review. It’s good to see a product in action
I dont need boots but I watched your review 😂 I wasn't interested with the boots, i was interested with how you will review it and I was waiting for Bob's appearance. You both are fun to watch 😊
That's the best I can hope for. It's weird doing videos "for someone else" because it's like...how do I make this fit with the rest of the channel? It feels so random, and it really confuses the algorithm. Hoping I can get y'all used to the idea of random "interludes" once in a while. :)
Also, you keep commenting about the sound, kinda beating up yourself about it. I ofc heard the difference, but it didn't bother me. The saying "Don't let perfect get in the way of good" comes to mind. At least not "Good enough". But then, I'm a 68 yo woman with more than one lazy bone, and of a rather laidback disposition. I can't be bothered to check the spelling of that in google translate, for instance. If it's wrong I'll blame my Swedish nationality, english not being my main language and blah blah blah... I'm convinced you get what I mean, you being such a bright young strapping lad ;-)
Thanks, I appreciate it. And yeah I was just annoyed because I bought a whole special lapel mic for outdoor videos in order to keep the sound steady and wind-free, and it seems like the phone was switching it off randomly, which made some shots way quieter than others. But I realize it really doesn't matter in videos like this where it's not about the aesthetic experience at alll...
lol the beginning of this video sounded like me as a young punk, trying to explain why I sold out and got caught listening to billboard top 40 radio music…I do have to “wax commercial once in a while”…I’m not in the market for boots but I watched the whole thing. I like BTW I hope you get more of these, too. Bob’s bills gotta be paid somehow
It can be a slippery slope, I'm aware... Right now I'm just desperate to get out of this shed and into some kind of house, so I'm doing anything I can to make line go up. My hope is that once I get a house, I can back off the commerce a bit...
Good review! I liked how you did the review - walking around, testing it in the dish pan, etc. Even Bob the cat had some participation! I don't mind when some UA-camrs include sponsored posts - they have to make $$ too. Maybe you can reach out to brands like Altra (if you hike) or Jackery (if you have a solar battery), etc. And yes, as you've said in another comment, you can make a separate playlist for your product reviews. Btw, I discovered you because of the first vid abt Watson, which now has 800k+ views!
I actually really appreciate sponsored posts. So many very useful products-that I never would have known about otherwise-have been brought to my attention this way. For example, I recently discovered a super compact travel vacuum that another UA-camr shared in a sponsored post. I bought it and not only was it as advertised, I was astonished at how super powerful it was. So, not annoying at all! Thanks for sharing!
That's good to hear. I figure I can drop one of these every once in a while and keep them in my "stuff I like" playlist, since I do have a pretty specific lifestyle and anyone who wants to live similarly could probably use a few tips on what works and what doesn't...
Flash forward a year and you are over 100k subs and you doing a sponsor every episode. Interesting an entire promo video that sounds exactly like all your other videos, you clearly have talent. Keep going - I want the boots but I have no need for these in Gold Coast Australia.
Hey, thank you! That would be the goal, to make any sponsored posts feel like they fit naturally with the rest of my stuff, but we'll see if this even happens again. Unsurprisingly, this is my lowest viewed video by far! What kind of thumbnail can I possibly create to get people excited about a boot review... 😂
Thank you! As an outdoorsy person I really dislike how interchangeable "waterproof" and "water resistant" have become. They're not. They're two vastly different things.
There's just a fundamental physics problem with the whole concept of waterproof membrane underneath non-waterproof exterior! Who wants to walk around with a bunch of cold, heavy, non-breathable water against their their technically "dry" bodies? All Gore Tex does is make things sweatier without actually solving the water problem. Everything I buy now is either non-waterproof to maximize breathability and drying speed, or fully waterproof.
I was wondering if you are anywhere near the migratory routes of the sandhill cranes. They are supposed to be stopping in the lakes around Moses Lake area this week.
You just tipped me off to something very cool! There's a whole festival for them in Othello WA which is one of their stops but I just missed it. Do you have more info about their Moses Lake arrival? I'd love to see them!
I think the birds might be still there. The festival might be over, but I don't go to festivals with lots of people. We are planning to go camping near Moses Lake this weekend hopefully to see the migration.@@OuterEdgeOutpost
