  • This Lazer coaching session with Katie in Milan will help you polish your Stepping Plough stop. It's a great method if you've decided to remove your heel brake as it's easier than the T-stop and does not require a huge amount of one legged balance or edge control (unlike the T-stop). If you're skating without a heel brake then the Stepping Plough should be in your repertoire for sure. This stop also saves your wheels as there is no sliding.
    For a full breakdown of all the progressions to learn this stop from scratch, check out the Stepping Plough lesson here;

      Thank you. I'm glad you found it useful. I'm really serious about helping skaters learn to stop better as it's one of the biggest problems I see around the world. Stopping isn't easy (or obvious) so it needs focus, correct technique, patience and correct practice.

    I just started skating and I've been skating for a month now. Basically all that I know about skating I learnt from your videos. Thank you, you are great. Can you make a video on how to jump 180 into a transition?

      Welcome to your new life on wheels! Sounds like you are enjoying the journey. I really encourage you to check out the free lessons on my website (which are much more complete than anything I offer on UA-cam). Go to Skatefresh.com, click on "Learn Online" and then choose a course theme and click "Free Trial". The beginner and Intermediate Fitness course free drills will really help you master edge control and balance. The "How to Skate" series is mixed skills. I promise those lessons will help you more than anything here. Jumping transitions are pretty risky so make sure first your backwards skating is fluent enough to withstand a backwards landing. I've got a backward skating video for you to begin with here;

      Hope this helps.

    Hi Asha I was thinking of buying 3 x 100 skates as something different from 4 x 80 - but when you mentioned stopping was much harder - perhaps not?
    Thanks for your video excellent as usual 😊

    • @SkatefreshVideos

      This is a very common question (I should do a video all about this perhaps, but here's the summary). Larger wheels are faster so your average speed will be higher without you even trying, so this will inevitably make stopping more challenging. Also, bigger wheels tend to also create inside edge pronation in skaters who haven't yet learned to consciously control their edges (and glide on centre edges on purpose).
      So my questions to you are;
      Do you already have at least 2 stopping methods that stop you from your highest speeds and bring you to a complete stop? Y/N?
      When you skate/stride normally at your medium/high speed, do you have any inside edge pronation in the glide phase (on one or both skates)? Y/N
      If you transition to larger wheels before mastering some stopping methods AND conscious edge control, your job of mastering those skills in larger wheels simply becomes more difficult. The choice is yours, but I think it's better to master things on smaller wheels so you can then 'translate' that learning to larger wheels, rather than making your pathway a bit harder.
      I see a LOT (and I mean a lot) of skaters who go up to larger wheels and then pronate (usually just on one foot) often for years and years. Prolonged pronation carries the risk of slow-onset injuries of the foot/ankle/knee or hip on the pronating side. Fixing pronation on larger wheels is a real challenge once it has become a habit.
      Hope this is helpful. It might not be what you wanted to hear but I've seen literally hundreds of skaters go through this process and so many struggle. Skating is hard enough as it is, but making things additionally difficult too early on does seem to cause a lot of issues. No-one is talking about this of course. You only hear about all the benefits like faster speed, better over rough stuff etc etc. That's all true, but the difficulty of stopping at higher speeds is real. Your safety should be your highest priority.
      Definitely need to do a video on this if that's the summary!

    I will try that next time I pratice. I am able to get some speed without falling or losing balance, but being unable control the speed (slow down specifically) and make emergency stops make me so unneasy and anxious.
    I am probably doing lots of small things wrong, as my knees are always hurting after an 1 hour so more of practicing.

    • @SkatefreshVideos
      @SkatefreshVideos  7 місяців тому +3

      The anxiety of not being able to stop well enough is your body's warning sign that you should probably skate slower for a while and focus exclusively on learning and mastering several stopping techniques. If you don't master that then you'll always feel anxious with some speed. Anxiety also translates as tension in the body and that's why your knees are hurting (for other people it's their feet or back). But pain in the joints comes from tension and tension comes from inability to stop. So make that your priority, before you have some kind of incident/accident. Nothing is more important than being able to stop well.

    I decided to try this stopping method very first time on the hill... the left leg went behind the right, going down the hill caused the legs positioned this way to spread out more... The upper body flew forward, the left leg (on the right side) was unable to turn with the body flying forward... As a result, I broke my left leg at the ankle. My mistake, bad luck.
    I have always liked roller skating, I hope to skate again in a few months, but it will be scary...

      Hi. This is Sergio from Skatefresh Team. I'm sorry for your accident. Asha always repeats that you must feel really comfortable doing the stops on a non-inclined surface before coming to a slope, and that when you go to practice on a slope you should do it at the bottom of it and the slope should be very mild. You can take a proper slope only after a lot of practice on easier ones. This process is the same in all techniques, it implies a progressive learning curve taking you from easy to hard adding more elements. Most people don't pay attention to this due to anxiety, they want fast results, and they go directly to achieve the goal without any prior practice. It's the reason why many people quit, because skating (as well as skiing, wakeboarding, etc) is dangerous and it should be learned properly. I hope you don't quit but you need to take it easy and go step by step. Asha has lots of online courses to help you get there, you can check them out in skatefresh.com/learn-to-skate-online/

    If you've got a brake block on the back of a skate, when wouldn't you use it?

    • @SkatefreshVideos
      @SkatefreshVideos  7 місяців тому +1

      I think the heel brake method usually trumps other methods as the heel brake is easier to execute and more effective in terms of stopping quickly and in narrow spaces too.
      You could use other methods of stopping if you weren't in an emergency (eg T-slide to slow down) or you just wanted some variety. But I am a HUGE fan of the heel brake for all new skaters (UNTIL they can do 2-4 other stops from their highest speeds and down slopes to a standstill). The problem is I'd guestimate about 70% of skaters not using a heel brake do not have 2-4 stopping methods that stop them from their highest speeds. And that's a risky place to be (and yet so many people seem OK to take that risk).... But not you. Bravo!

      @@SkatefreshVideos Thanks, that's good to know! There are lots of videos online of the various stopping methods but I hadn't found it clear if some were better depending on the situation. I've just bought some skates (I'm in my 40's) to try as an alternative to running. I did it a bit when younger but I'm still only a novice. I'm really excited about it, and have got my daughter some for Christmas too!
