  • In this video, I'll share my thoughts and opinions on the subject of Artificial Intelligence as it relates to the profession of Graphic Design. One of our viewers asked if Graphic Design is still a good field to get into taking into account all the developments with AI. This brings up a lot of other questions such as: Is AI taking our Graphic Design jobs? Is AI going to replace the need for Graphic Designers? And how will AI affect Graphic Design?

      Thanks Jenny! Yes, definitely an important conversation, and a very hot topic right now. Things seem to be changing week-to-week with AI, but I think it’s helpful for creatives to be able to consider how AI impacts the creative industry both in good and bad ways.

    AI is coming for anyone that works on a PC. Best to work on a field such as photography or any field where AI is not physically present.

    • @EricVasquezDesign
      @EricVasquezDesign  17 днів тому

      AI is very much present in photography, and has been for a while. This doesn’t seem to negate the professional behind the camera who decides what to look at through the lens, or how to frame and crop an image, or even how to color correct and retouch the image it captures. These are some of the things that make photography such a beautiful form of art, because there are many decisions to be made that can make it unique.
      Similarly, designers make hundreds of informed choices and decisions based on the needs and direction of a client.
      AI may be able to make interesting looking images, but the choices it makes are rather generic. AI doesn’t have the ability to tell a story with licensed images, or capture emotions in a single frame the way that a human can.
      It also presents another challenge because as soon as a client asks for changes and revisions to a piece of AI generated art, they are limited in what they can do to a flattened image that is comprised of plagiarized material compared to fully layered files that can be easily changed and updated using licensed materials.
      This is why most legit companies want no part of AI in commercial artwork, and why there will still be a need for artists.

    • @EricVasquezDesign
      @EricVasquezDesign  2 дні тому

      I’m sorry to hear that. Whether or not you want to continue is of course entirely up to you, but if it were me I wouldn’t quit. The truth is that there are a lot of avenues and industries within Graphic Design, and just because AI has disrupted a lot of creative fields doesn’t mean that there is no longer a need for people who know how to design. Take the camera for example. Many of us have iPhones or Android devices that are very capable of taking great photos and videos, and while it may have caused some people to stop pursuing photography or film as an art form, there are still plenty of creative folks who can make a living teaching or working in both of these areas. Just my opinion based on my own experience, but ultimately the decision is up to you.

    im sorry but im running away graphic design. a month ago I saw a big opera poster in the biggest theatre of southern Madrid 100% made in AI. It looked awful but like always people didnt care and nobody did. we wasted way too much time in skills and making everything perfect but we didnt know nobody except other graphic designers cared.

    There will be no artists any more. The only one's who survive will do so by creating a cult of personality or associating aggresively with prestige which rich people will always pay for as it grants status.
    Composer for video games? AI
    Write jingles for ads? AI
    Design posters and flyers? AI
    Web design? AI
    It's all going away if AI continues at the current pace.

    • @EricVasquezDesign
      @EricVasquezDesign  17 днів тому

      Thank you for your comment and for sharing your thoughts on this topic. While I understand where you may be coming from - yes, AI can create these things, it’s doing so based on the plagiarized sum of work created by others.
      When we look at AI generated art, we can see that something is a little bit ‘off’ because of overly smoothed out images, or people with ten fingers on each hand that look like they are melting 🫠 but what AI can’t do is create something new and original because it’s generating images based off of the data it has scraped online.
      AI can’t understand the nuances of human emotions.
      AI can’t make revisions to a piece of art the way that a human can.
      AI might save people money, but it lacks soul, originality, and the ability to interpret complex emotions the way that an artist can.
      In addition to all of this, there are of course the moral and legal implications of using AI generated art for commercial purposes.
      Several of the agencies that I have personally worked with over the past year or so have said that AI can be used for mood boards or reference, but they don’t want anything that has been AI generated in the final artwork.
      In one case I actually had to rebuild a design that someone used AI to create for this very reason.
      These are some of the reasons I have to respectfully disagree. I believe humans gravitate towards, and recognize genuine art that was created with thoughtfulness and passion. And while AI may be a helpful tool, I don’t believe it will replace artists.

      @@EricVasquezDesign Let me address your points one by one because I feel they are willfully ignorant and further encourage us to bury our heads in the sand regarding this issue instead of addressing it.
      AI art looks or sounds weird. Well in some cases yes, in others it is completely convincing. It’s only in its infancy, it will get better rapidly and unless there is some unforeseen road block it will be completely indistinguishable from human made art. This is already happening.
      AI can’t create something new band original because it’s generating images based off of the data scraped online. Yes this is quite literally what humans do. We engage with things over time which creates an artistic language that is an amalgam of our influences. Again, the larger the dataset for AI (which is getting larger everyday) the better it will get at this. Furthermore, let’s be honest, most human-created art isn’t particularly interested in originality (nor should it be). Far more art exists within a preexisting framework. Pop music for example, is mostly songs 3-4 minutes long, in a major key, uses the I, V, vi, and IV chords, and uses a verse-chorus structure. It’s pretty rare fro a pop song to break the mold in any way.
      AI can’t understand the nuances of human emotion. It doesn’t need to, it needs to create an impression that it does. AI doesn’t need to understand anything. And again, most human art doesn’t represent a deep and nuanced understanding of human emotion. Intentionality is extremely difficult to determine with any veracity just by experiencing the art work itself. Once again and let me hammer this home, AI just needs to create something convincing which it already does and will only get better at.
      Agencies not using it. This can only last so long. Workers cost money, if you run a business full of humans and you’re trying to compete with companies that use AI instead, you will lose that battle every time. You cannot compete with prices that result from an AI workforce long-term.
      It’s possible that AI won’t replace artists, I hope that’s true but the only reason it won’t is if humans collectively decide not to use it in art creation and avoid consuming art made with it. The quality of AI-generated material will not be a barrier if it continues at the pace it's going now.
      All this nonsense about our unique soul etc is so absent of any concrete analysis and constitutes wishful thinking. Please do better because this is serious.
      BTW, graphic designers are already losing jobs and being replaced by AIs trained on their work. Actual resistance is the only way to deal with this, not sitting on youtube and saying ‘nah I actually think it’s fine cause people have soul, machine no have soul’.

      @@endah08 Thank you for your input and for sharing your opinions on this. It sounds like you know a lot about AI, and that's great. I never claimed to be an expert in AI, I am only an expert in Graphic Design. I am in no way recommending that anybody ignore what is happening or bury their heads in their sand.
      This video is just about what my experience has been like using AI and what I have seen in working with companies who are creating commercial artwork. I would be curious to know what your experience has been like working as a professional designer with some of these companies?
      At the end of the day, there will always be people who don't value art, and for them, maybe AI is the answer. I also believe that we need to acknowledge that there are also people who value human-generated art and what it means as a form of expression in the world.
      Is the answer to stop educating people about how to create art? No. I don't think the answer is to just stop and give up because AI is coming. There is still a lot of value in learning about art, design, and how it can be used in myriad ways from giving people ways to express themselves to trying to share their artwork and make a living from it. Just because we have cameras in our pockets that can do a great job of taking photos and videos doesn't mean that people no longer care about photography and videography. There are tons of people out there still teaching these subjects, and those who are paid to do it despite the fact that it can be done for less.
      I do like what you have said about collective resistance, and I hope to hear more about your ideas on how we can do that. I have seen the new Cara social media platform where artists are able to showcase their work with protection against AI, and I am hopeful that more platforms like this will start popping up.
