When did Sleep Token state that their music is metal? As far as I know, they don't want to be put into a category at all...
the first ghost album was clear doom metal. the next 2 albums were occasionally metal but more on the rock side of things.
after that, they just became an 80s rock tribute band with spooky theatrics
Except they never even claimed to be metal. Even in interviews, they say that have metal INSPIRATION, but they refuse to label themselves as metal

I don't like to shit on a fan base, but Sleep Token fans are like swifties, creepy groupies who's lives revolve around a trendy gimmick band. I'd take the doucebagery of late 90's Limp Bizkit fans at this point.

I have enjoyed Sleep Token since they released their first stuff back in 2016. Saw them open a few times the last few years for other acts. I figured they might gain moderate popularity, but I didn't expect them to blow up with TMBTE. I'm glad for their success, but I cannot fucking stand the new wave of horrendously cringe fans. I've heard some horror stories about people who clearly have never been to a show causing scenes and ruining the experience for people around them and just generally being annoying. Their subreddit is so full of rabid fans I had to leave it so I'd stop seeing posts about absolutely cringe shit. Love Sleep Token, detest their fans.
I don't think you can put all fans into the same category. They have over 3 million monthly listeners on Spotify, that's a lot of people. Of course there will be some groups of fans who lean more into the side of unhealthy fanaticism. Depending on where you look on the internet, they can be quite prevalent in some places, but they're still just a vocal minority...
As you can probably see in my pfp, I'm a pretty big fan of sleep token, but i love their music, not the band members themselves.I've never cared about what the artists themselves do or are, I only enjoy the music, and some fans, as you've said, are just wayyyy too much in love with the members

To be fair do they pretend to be metal? Sometimes you find A perfect circle albums in the heavy metal section of a cd store, but that's not really the bands fault

Not a fan of Sleep token but I can understand why people like them. I discussed this phenomenom of weird parasocial fans in the music sphere and I feel like It's part due to how the kpop industry treats its fans and makes sure that the fans believe they have a chance with the idols. It is seriously a shame because the toxic fans are a vocal minority that give a bad look to people who like the music in a normal way

Every time Ghost is going to release a new album they pull a Madonna and make some controversy. I only like Sleep Token's image and the lore. But man I don't like their music at all, it's so freaking BORING!
Seems like this doxxing is just a rumor, but it can actually happen judging by how psychotic and parasocial their fanbase is. They're reaching kpop stan's levels of obsession.
A simple search in the comments of Tank or Finn’s videos has a link to a UA-cam channel (Sleep Talking) that has all the details. In summary, a “fan” running a group on telegram trying to reveal the identities of ST claimed to have their birth certificates (obviously based on their real names, easily googled). This admin had also stalked their families Facebook accounts to post photos and other personal info. Whether this is for clout or just psychotic behavior, it is totally unacceptable.
In Sleep Talkins video they said they heard that someone heard that someone said someone else said they have private info on the band, and they never showed any evidence. It would be psychotic behavior if it happened but I really don't believe that it did
For me I kinda like them, heard some songs, lore, masks, music over personality ideology and vessel phenomenal voice are things i like about them and will listen take me back to eden album, but I understand why someone likes it and someone don't

I heard so many songs that used autotunes and about sleep token I don't have any sense of autotune, in autotune you can hear just some change from actual voice, apps are not perfect, and I watched live concer, you can say "not good quality from mobile device or playback" but what you are saying this it's not 100% fact, just speculation. i just like his voice
@@MrRadoslav Maybe my use of words are bad. What I mean by autotune is voice modifier that are used to make the voice sound differently. It is easy to use it in live, a lot of bands do it.

Whiny singing, lol. That's exactly what they are. Couldn't have said it better myself. I saw Ne Obliviscaris last year, and they played one of Sleep Token's songs on tape before their set. I was like, 'What is this?' lol.
I cannot stand these guys. I just don't like it, and I think you're right. They're a pop band masquerading as a metal band, and the fans are almost as toxic as people who play League of Legends or other esports games.
i've only heard a few songs and one of them wasnt the worst thing i've heard but the more i listened i just really couldn't get into it at all, somehow it got worse the more i heard
The only reason i don't consider Sneed Token the worst of 2023 is 'cause A7F decided to try to sound like Mr. Bungle. But at least A7F doesn't feel like AI generated crap...
I love pop and I love metal, and I’m perfectly fine with blending the two, but Sleep Token don’t do it well at all. They’ve got a couple interesting songs, but most of their music sounds profoundly boring to me.
Most time you find an interesting idea on ST, it comes from (usually) Loathe. And Loathe does has the talent to actually execute their ideas properly.
I'd say I can dig some of their stuff, for example 'vore' is a good track, and the genre blending in some tracks like 'the summoning' is quite pleasing a times. They definitely has a unique sound and is a great gateway band for ppl outside the metal world to get in touch with our side. credit where the credits' due. But the fans... man... they are really kinda crazy, and their music is somewhat overhyped for sure. I'm happy they get recognition and is making banks, but I have very mixed feelings about them being the biggest metal phenomenum in 2023

I cannot stand this band. It is not metal. You summarized my thoughts on it perfectly. It is r&b with objectively TERRIBLE singing that has a tiny handful of breakdowns thrown in. I will never in my life understand how they got so popular. It feels like the universe playing a prank on me.

Quickly skipped through The Summoning (down-tuning, djent, heard other bands like this) and Alkaline (different but similar). Not my thing but sounds pretty heavy.

I honestly don’t understand how this could DESTROY the band. It was always an inevitability that their identities would be revealed. It didn’t DESTROY Ghost. I don’t know why this is such a big deal.

full disclosure, I like 1 of their songs but the rest of their music feels very shallow and boring to me. however what really ruins the band imo is their awful fandom. it doesn't make their music better or worse but it makes it harder to "give them another chance to grow on me". but who knows, maybe this will have positive consequences. maybe their next record will be pure heaviness with songs that call out their dumb annoying ass fans?

I've heard their new album and its kinda depressing. But its mainly inoffensive so you either like it or you dont. No big deal. Alt Metal/Djent is pretty much hit and miss anyway.
Sneed Token isn't even close to djent tho.
Also the "depressing" aspect of their music is very surface level and basic. It's like fast food in music form.

So tired of everyone simping for this boring band. I share your opinion, got the same impression. On 2023 new years, a friend showed them to me when I was a little bit far gone, I liked them a lot then (as I suppose a dude would if he met a girl that was a 5 in such a state) then but forgot about them soon after. Remembered them again a few months later and gave it a sober listen, and was so utterly unimpressed. My disdain has grown a lot this month hearing everyone talk about how they're the future of metal, best band of 2023 and all that. Finn Mckenty especially has a braindead take saying they are just hated because goth girls like them. I'm a lady who occasionally likes dressing goth, I'd rather listen to Tristania.

Lmao then Deftones is the most hated band in the world i guess, considering their fanbase got a lot of goth girls lately (and even before, but hey, Deftones has a very diverse biosphere in their fanbase anyways).
Sneed Token is hated 'cause they suck as metal band, and they has cultivated a very toxic fanbase without taking care of it. Other bands has called their fans out when they've taking shit too far, Death Grips being the most recent case i can remember.
@@miserirken I went to see The Birthday Massacre back in 2018, their audience was almost all goth girls. They have a pretty iconic image with their lyrics, merch and album art, (they were selling bunny ears that lit up at their shows, and I thought it was a lot of fun.) I never see anyone complaining about TBM.
I haven't heard a lot about Sleep Token's fan base, I know there are people who rabidly like them, but not to what extent they are toxic.

I have yet to hear a sleep token song and I don’t care to hear any of them at this point I think they’re overrated and overhyped. I usually go more for the underground metal bands.
Sleep Token were really off-putting to me at first, but some of their stuff has kinda grown on me. But I've always been more into prog, symphonic, & power metal, so I've become pretty accepting of a lot of the cheesy shit that gets tossed into songs. And goddamn, has there been a lot lately! I feel like it's better when the bands lean into it though & don't try to maintain some dark, brooding persona. Sleep Token could totally benefit from the addition of a keytar. And give Vessel a tambourine! 😆
Ghost is metal. The later black death related albums are far superior to the early hail Satan albums. But it's melody heavy metal, gatekeepers be damned on this one lol.

I'll never get the ghost hate. It's hard rock/metal with a different vocal style than we're used to. Yeah they look like black metal and sound like glam metal, but it's still (at least I think) good music.
Then again I can listen to mayhem, Metallica and kiss on the same playlist so maybe my opinion ain't valid
I think they’re neat. Obviously a lot of metal elitists are going to throw a bitch fit about them being considered metal but let’s be honest, most metal bands and fans don’t give a shit about labeling these days. I think the whole “ popmetal will ruin metal” is so overblown. Delusional metal heads have been saying that since the rise of numetal and yet here we are years later still getting heavy metal (deathmeta/deathcore is flourishing right now). Do I think some people are annoying about them? DEFINITELY. But do I think their experience is an insult to metal. Nope. I will definitely admit that ST isn’t for everyone. Obviously metal heads that don’t like the more melodic/slower stuff are going to think their shit. But I can’t deny that they are unique.
Personally, I love Sleep Token, but this whole series of events really confuses me. Seeing how many articles were written about them after they wiped their IG pages, for them to turn around and announce another North American tour (AND NOT EVEN COME TO KANSAS CITY 🤬) leaves kind of a sour taste in my mouth. If it was the fans creating drama out of thin air, that would be one thing, but if it was the band themselves then that’s just not cool.
