Trying Ice Dyeing // Playing With Tie Dye

- I wanted to title this video "Ice Dye Tie Try" but decided to be good and give it a normal title. Today I'm experimenting with ice dying! First I wanted to try all the methods and colors to see what I like best, then in the future I will dye some fabric (aka white cotton sateen) to use on some more "me" projects. Have you ever tried tie-dye before?

But wait there's more! A PO BOX finally wahoo!
First, a disclaimer: So many of you have kindly offered to send me things, including vintage items you may have inherited, and I am so honored you would think of me and of course I do adore vintage treasures, however, unfortunately I only have so much storage space currently! So there is a chance that if something just wont work for me, or doesn't fit me etc, that I may not be able to keep all of your lovely things. Please only send things if you are okay with the possibility that I may donate items I just cannot keep. If you would prefer I put things that I can't keep into the TCH Etsy shop to help raise funds for me and the channel, please specify this in a note or letter in your parcel. Thank you so much!

Thank you for watching!
I have started dyeing fabric yardage now too, and let's just say I'm excited to show you sometime 🤩
oooh cannot wait to see how they turn out.
Loved all the experiment dye shirts.
And I’m excited to see what you come up with!
Walmart shocking does have some linen shirts you can but but usually have color stripes over white already. Might be a cool combo tho
I’m excited to see what you come up with!
Dharma's website is a little bit of a mess, but they do actually have a lot of natural fiber clothing, cloth and yarn available to dye. They also have dyable lace! And they usually use cotton thread, so you don't get the white seams on the garments.
Losing my mind at all these phrases.. "forbidden casserole" 😂
I am perfectly happy with your videos running long. It's fun to vicariously enjoy your crafting/sewing/etc.
Thank you!
I think this would be fun to do on raw fabric before sewing something out of it, like plain linen fabric and then tie dye it, then make a garment out of it
Fun idea! Even cotton jersey for leggings or joggers. So many possibilities! Thanks for the idea! 💙
I can confirm it is indeed fun 🤩
I just noticed that Dharma sells plan fabric-even rayon. It would be interesting to see how it compares to other fabric sources.
22 minutes in I imagine one of Bianca's parched family members going to the freezer to get ice for a soda or highball and finding nothing but empty spots where the ice trays usually live and then exasperatedly shouting; "Biancaaaaaaa!!!! Your dying is killing meeeee!!!"
Also, this is all so fun to watch. They remind me of the gorgeous hand-marbled paper from Florence or Venice.
Fun facts from a science nerd: Soda ash is strongly basic so in the same way that a strong acid would burn your hands, strong bases also break down your skin. It doesn’t hurt as quickly as acid so you might not notice it as quickly but will take some skin off which is what that slippery feeling is. It will leave your skin pretty raw if you leave it too long. Just in case anyone was curious lol
Luckily I wash my hands a bunch becuase if it were any faster I wouldn't have fingerprints left 😂
Yes it’s not extremely strong especially diluted. Safe to handle depends on how much you are handling it. Touching it briefly isn’t going to hurt you but sticking your hand in and out of a bucket of it for a few hours will probably start to cause irritation. Just like vinegar is fine unless you were sticking your hand in it for a few hours. Is it going to cause massive damage? No of course not. But this use case and how often you dye things are all important factors. Just maybe not worth the irritation. Gloves are definitely the best bet!
The DYING table of doom.
This is so much fun! There's a lot of black walnut trees where I live and I've been tempted to make a dye out of them lol.
I’m just getting started today. Thanks for sending me down this rabbit hole. Also, I loved talking with the helpful person at Dharma - she was wonderful. She also stated that Dharma charges actual shipping costs for my order and suggested that I purchase my soda ash at a local pool supply - if there’s one in my town. (LOL - I live in Phoenix - plenty of pool supply stores here). She said that I would likely pay more, but the savings in the shipping costs would make up the difference. Gotta love a business that allows it’s customer service rep to turn down a sale to help a customer. That one suggestion alone certainly earned my loyalty.
Absolutely amazing! The last one was gloriously stunning! I can’t wait to see more!
Thank you Caroline!
I love ice dying - my favorite is to use various types of black dyes because black has the most color components and the result is really spectacular
Me too! I’ve had some fun results from mixing black with other primary colors too… I get the crazy interesting splits from the black but can set the overall tone with the addition of another color.
@@cynthiadugan858 omg great idea!!!! weekend plans 😎
@@elenaw5781 I put about a teaspoon of black into a little container and a half teaspoon of my other color, add a teaspoon or 2 of salt because it helps mix it better and creates some interesting effects that I enjoy.. put a lid on and shake it all up together. The only exception is yellow. Yellow creates a fun green split when mixed with black and doesn’t split out much on its own so if I want actual yellow, I leave some gaps in the black and make sure there is yellow in the gaps.
@@cynthiadugan858 thanks for the tip! :)
I lol'd when you started to use your hands to put the snow over the shirt, then just dumped the whole container of snow in there.
welcome to your new obsession, from another fiber addict. to really do things well, take the fabric of any sort and scour it, put it in a large pot that you are not using for food add the washing soda then the material and bring it to a boil then simmer for a half hour. you will be surprised at how much stuff comes off even new things. will take stains out of things as well.
I have a salad spinner for laundry. Bras in particular. Wringing out an underwire isn't really an option. And after spinning, a heavier cotton sports bra will actually be dry by morning.
The crop top looks like a Sunflower! I live in Ks, that is our state flower! WELL DONE!
Back in 2020 just before the world crashed I had signed up to take a paper / silk marble dyeing class with the idea of making silk scarves. Needless to say that never happened and the place where it was offered has changed. Maybe I'll try ice dyeing instead seems less complicate than marble dyeing. And the examples that you have made are wonderful. Can't wait to see what you do with fabric!
Thank you Donna! I love marbled patterns so I understand the appeal!
The "zombie" one looks like there is a meditating gnome about 1/3 of the way up from the bottom.
Oh! could you use that striped green-brown-white-grey, t-shirt that looks amazing but didn't really fit, as a detail in a dress or wrap top or something, perhaps? To save the cool pattern?
I'm afraid I don't use stretchy t-shirt fabric like that for anything, so that shirt is simply destined to be owned by somebody else sometime soon!
OOH BIANCA GURL! YOU KNOW WHAT? I SEE SOME FACES IN THIS DESIGN! WOW! AMAZING!!! I GOT TO DO THIS! I MUST DO THIS!!!!
if you do any more guy-sized tee shirts, i will buy!!!
The last one is by far my favorite, it reminds me of a kaleidoscope! Craft stores actually carry 100% cotton shirts that are meant to be dyed. Michael’s and Joann Fabrics both often run good sales on unisex ones, sometimes as good as 4/$10 (which is better than my local thrift stores).
Thank you! The trouble is the style of the shirts is not what I'm after, I'd like fitted mock-necks and such, so I have moved onto just dying fabric 😅✨
So many of these came out in various shades of metal decay, so I was getting some post-apocalyptic vibes. Very cool 😎
Thank you Danielle! I'm crushing on so much verdigris and rust right now 😂✨
I'd love to see how you take on reverse tie-dye/bleaching black fabric, since many of the commercial blacks break into brown tones.
Bianca, I do not need another hobby right now, hahaha!
This looks amazing though! Great job!
Same! I want to dye all the things now! But I don't even have room for another hobby at this point in my life, lol
Thank you Joelle! don't you though?? think of the messes to be made...🤣✨
for the one that you liked but it didn't fit you well, that could be a good one for modification (Or Odd-ification as my sleep deprived hands wanted to say)
Gorgeous! I love the surprise factor of this process!
Thank you!
I think you can find 100% t shirts at Michael's specifically for dye crafts. Theses are really cool. I love the tall deep ones. I am going to have to try this.
Thank you Susan! The trouble is the style of craft t-ee shirts is very bulky and not /fashion/ 🤣
After looking at all of the Instagram coverage, I was DYING to see the video and OMG, I'm hooked. Unfortunately (or maybe luckily), getting supplies like that in my country is next to impossible without spending a small fortune, so I'm so happy to live vicariously through your adventures in color alchemy 😂
Thank you Olga! More dying projects coming soon!
These turned out so cool! Can't believe these were just your first experiments, how cool. And love the variety of techniques!!! Can't wait to see the geode ones. I have a black dress I've been meaning to try this on, but using the color remover that Fun Endeavors shows on their channel for the reverse dye projects. If you try that I'd be interested in your thoughts on the process/results!
That would be so cool.
Thank you Cait! I think I'm too impatient to add that much more prep work into the situation, I can barely wait the full 24 hours to let things process, let alone through another wash cycle or two before I even get to add the color 😅😂
Ooooh the last "paper airplane" shirt ended up looking like the windows media player color shifting animations!
✨throwback✨🤣
for those who may be searching, the max packs of men's undershirts are often 100% cotton (at very least the hanes ones from target (you can find them in the underwear section))
i am constantly on the hunt for mostly polyester t's because i do sublimation and it won't adhere to natural fibers. almost ALL of the t's i find at walmart are 100% cotton - both men's and women's. so for those looking, that's an option.
Absolutely lovely! It’s been such a long time since I followed the tie dye that you had some techniques I hadn’t seen or tried before.
I have a technique that I have used a lot that will allow you to dye up to 3 T-shirts with a single teaspoon of dye. I would be happy to share it with you if you are interested. I’ve shared it before but in all honesty, I don’t think anyone ever tried it because they just couldn’t believe that a single teaspoon was enough dye.
Also, some of my very best dyes were done on cool days when it took “forever” for the ice to melt!
@@cynthiadugan858 now you gotta share how
Thank you Cynthia! A ton of dye does seem to get "wasted", but mostly because I am too heavy handed and impatient! 🤣
This is fun!
Also... The muscle shirt wants you to add a lace collar and sleeves ❤️
Love! love! LOVE! The mock neck geometric green teal one!
Thank you Åsa!
Last one is like dragonfly nymphs - good kaleidoscopic 💖💕
Wow! Thanks so much for doing all this work and filming it all. This was so informative and interesting. I liked a lot of them, even though I’m not much of a tie-dye type anymore.
Thank you Cynthia!
Cotton shirts, polyester thread... it's a look. I'm excited to see how yardage turns out!
That last top has so many faces on it, it's amazing. They are so unique. I don't usually like tie-dyed things but you do it so well.
Thank you Steph!
Omg! It looks like a tilted scull on the tint crop top! The triangle in the middle is like the nose hole ☠️ Soo cool!
I was going to order from Dharma but the shipping costs were crazy high so I ended up not taking the plunge for it yet. I will have to other wise all the white linen I have is just gonna stay white😅
Yeah I just ordered enough that it felt justified 🤣
Making soda ash is very easy! And if you make it from baking soda it’s food grade and you can make some damn good pretzels with it, no lye!
Also Lowe’s has the cheapest “super washing soda” which is soda ash, followed by Walmart. Wouldn’t recommend making pretzels with this though
The Rorschach test one... looks like Buddha reaching Enlightenment. 😊
@ 39:35 this is what happens if Trixie Mattel passes out, face first, in your laundry! Seriously though I love everything you do, always look forward to Thursdays!
Thank you Darrin!
Last shirt the BEST. Funniest image defined: Zombie🧟♀ Alien 👽Fairy🧚♀
Thank you! This is awesome and i would definitely be interested in more dyeing videos. Your shirts turned out really well.
WOW!! Double WOW! How very 😎 COOL that you have this recorded so you can remember the ones that rocked and how to get close to it again!
Thank you!
@@TheClosetHistorian I didn't know about the 'put one sleeve inside the other and smooth' trick! Certainly wish that I had known that about twenty years ago! Bless you!
For those wondering, Sodium Carbonate, Soda Ash and Washing Soda are all the exact same thing.
I’m sure seventy-four people have already mentioned this, but Dharma Trading sells every kind of white garment (and fabric) you’d ever want to dye.
Makes me think of thin-layer chromatography! Another thing where solvents make colours move apart at different speeds.
The long sleeved one looks like a pumpkin!
I used to twist/tie dye 100% silk fabric (scarfs, shirts, pants, yardage, etc.) getting similar patterns using a highly concentrated water based silk paint that is steam fixated and regular vinegar. Using a microwave. The silk would be soaked in vinegar then more or less wrung out and twisted/tied, then the colours would be dripped over it. Cover the tub and put it into the microwave at I think it was around 750 for 3 min. or something to that effect. It kind of depended on size and weight of the piece of fabric being used. Take it out, rinse till nearly no bleeding is left, done. Was a lot of fun!
And yes, it's a myth, that silk is not washable. True 100% silk will tolerate even being cooked without problems. Unfortunately fabric makers can add up to I believe 3% other fibers without needing to declare that and still call it "pure silk".
Well done! I love seeing your beautiful less than desirable outcomes. Sometimes we want more pastels and it's good to see how cotton/polyester blends react. Thank you for experimenting.
Wow, those shirts are like The Jar, that legendary Twilight Zone episode. I see a monster/alien face, hearts, prism eyes, a koala, Shreak's head, grasshopper heads from Five Million Years to Earth, and a monstera leaf. And that's just in the last shirt! Give this Rorschach test to all your friends.
I know enough chemistry to know that the reason soda ash feels kinda slimy/soapy is that it's literally saponifying your hands. Yuck. So wear gloves, don't turn your hands into soap people 😐
experimental controls are for scientists, not chaotic crafters. a control would just be boring. lol. I love these. Some very cool tie dyes. I've been wanting to dye some of my clothes that aren't quite the color I want them to be. I was planning to just dye them a solid color, but I might try some fun tie dye on them too. TBD. It's not extremely high on my crafting list at the moment.
Thank you so much for stressing safe practices! And thank you for sharing your efforts with such a great video.
I have seen some really cool results from people bleaching a dark fabric in sections/a spray then tie dying the fabric filling in those lightened areas with color. I didn't think of it until watching here but could you skip the bleaching process by dying something that already has a high contrast pattern? As Bianca (hoping Im remembering the name right) loves a bold floral Im just imaginging some fun experiments dying a fabric with a dark or black background with white flowers to create interesting effects in a costum color scheme or gradiant. It could be cool to maybe use the high low method using the tinfoil balls under the center of the flowers... or maybe that would be too much work. Or maybe it would be better to have colorful backgrounds for a dark design.
This is the danger of me learning about new things. My brain runs away on me with ideas.
It's more "The Blue Crafting Table of Doom" now, I guess
Apologies for the epic comment, I just never have anyone to talk to about dying...so I love that you are doing this. It is so much fun! I am sure that since you started this process you have gone down the rabbit hole and know what I am about to say but I am a nerd and I cannot help myself now that I see a fellow nerd I can discuss this with! To preamble this, I have been dying all types of fibre, both cellulose and animal for about 4 years now, and I love how the dye breaks up into its individual components. One thing I have noticed, and you might notice it when it gets warmer as well, is that temperature really does make a difference on the colour of some of the dyes, mainly some of the more fancy greens and the browns. Sage is one of those, it just breaks into blues and yellows like you wont believe, I don't think I have ever had that colour actually be a sage green under any condition but solution. Now here is where the fun begins - for me anyway - the different dyes bind at different rates, with the yellows normally taking the longest time, and the reds the fastest, blues are somewhere in between unless it is cerulean or of the teal/aqua family in which case those bad boys will take days. Now this is fun because once you figure out the types of colours your dye breaks into you can almost plan the shades in a project and whether to dye in the muck and have the colours blend a bit more or out of the muck and have the break be more pronounced. With yarn I used to do it through dip dying. My Aunt pains on silk scarves and she dip dies some of them in a hot dye solution to get an ombre effect, but also to get that break of the different colours. Her fave is the truffle brown because you end up with a deep purple on one end that progresses into a brown and then a pale yellow on the other. That made me thing how amazing would it be to have an hombre style silk dress or blouse?! Love from Oxford - Nikki
Wow forgot how 90’s brown tie dye is! These all look like they’d belong in any classic after school sitcom.
If you want to try acid dyes, you can actually use artificial food coloring. Kool-Aid works well because it already has an acid in it. Besides wool and silk, it also works on any kind of animal hair-based fibers and nylon. You need heat to set it, but the dyes don't wash out as much as fiber reactive dyes.
The size of the chunks of ice or snow will have some effect on how the dye flows through but it will be fairly subtle so won't be very noticeable in most cases.
How tightly you scrunch, fold, or tie the items will also affect how the dye moves through and saturates the fabric. A looser scrunch is going to let the dye flow easier so the color edges will be softer and there will be less white space. A tighter fold or scrunch will resist the dye movement more so produce more white areas.
Shiitake produces some amazing color splits so if you haven't already done so I would suggest trying that one by itself to see what you get.
Also thank you for mentioning safety and using gloves and a mask. It's frustrating to watch sewing channels decide to do dye videos and either simply not acknowledge the safety concerns or mention them but actively decide to ignore them because it's not convenient.
And welcome to the fun rabbit hole that is dyeing.
I want to ice dye EVERYTHING now..... o^_^o
The 3rd shirt looks like an Anel!
oooh, tie dye! I have a ton of tie-dyed shirts, but they're starting to fade. I'll save this for later, when the weather's better for dying in my area ^^
These turned out so great, you should make a “color blocked” top/dress out of the fabric from the tops that aren’t your size
Thank you! I'm afraid they aren't the right kind of fabric for it in my mind, but I've moved onto dying cotton sateen!
@@TheClosetHistorian that is sad, most of them turned out so pretty, hopefully your cotton sateen experiments will be just as fun 👩🏻🔬
This is so cool. I love how the pale bit on back of the second t-shirt looks like some sort of creature with its mouth open.
I dream of being able to snow dye. Alas, being in Australia, I'd have to drive up the mountain to access that much snow, so it's bags of ice from the bottle shop. Breaking multi pigment dyes always makes me smile. I look forward to seeing more dyeing vids.
Thank you! Yeah I'm lucky I've got plenty of snow in our yard right now 😂
They turned out beautiful! I love listening to your voice describe the nebulous you can see in your tie dye designs or when you talk about your friends cherry tree. Your videos work like asmr for me ❤
Thank you!! ❤️
Love Bianca is aha moments like our yard is full of snow and that is free...
Taking “chill’n in the basement” to a whole new level
Facts 🥶
I've never been much into tie dye, but in these earthy colors you have me liking it!
Now I know exactly what to do if I ever need moth wings.
I have enough hobbies. I have enough hobbies. I have. ENOUGH. HOBBIES.
That mock neck though!
Do you though? Are your hobbies messy enough?? think about it 🤣
Fun as always, thank you for taking us along the journey with you
Thank you!
Mostra-nos sua coleção de lenços🥰 Amaria ver Amo lenços vintages
I see demon faces and velociraptors in most of them. Hmm I must need help
i’ve been wanting to try this!!! now i’m encouraged to dive into it
You could do some sewing magic on the shirt you said would be a little tight on you
They came out great. BTW have you Seen Morgan Donner's video on using photosensitive dye?
Thank you! I haven't seen it, but I do have some of that paper around somewhere that I meant to play with ages ago 😂
@@TheClosetHistorian it's really cool but you got to be on your game with that one as it is starts working quickly and any obstruction to the sun, even passing clouds will affect the out come.
I ADORE that dress she made! I don't have nearly that amount of patience, sadly, but that color is PHENOMENAL.
I love your perspective on trying a new skill - that each attempt adds to your bank of knowledge and experience.
It's so encouraging in a world where we are smacked with a stream of perfect finished objects on social media, but never the joy of experimenting and learning.
Thank you Lucy!
Anyone else see the cicada facing down in the center of the first shirt?
I love how unique they all are! That last one was stunning. I can't wait to see what else you create!! Fabulous job!!!
Thank you Sarah!
Am I the only one who sees a teddy bear in the centre of the green rayon turtle neck?
Oooo I’m about to get messy this weekend 👀
RE cotton t shirts, I've got some 100% cotton t shirts - but I'm in Australia so I don't know that my recommendations would be that good. Uniqlo and Muji both have them. I think they might also be available from tie dye suppliers. The ice dye looks so cool - and since I'm moving to Finland I'll have access to snow and will finally be able to try it! I'm excited to see fabric yardage!
Thank you! I have definitely been looking at Uniqlo, but really I just moved onto doing yardage and now I'm good 😂✨
Nice pieces! I love the last one, your favorite....it matches the color of your mandragora silk jacket. Awesome 😍😍👌👌
Thank you!
Have you tried Stonehenge fabrics for stone-looking prints? It's 100% cotton for quilting.
The trouble is I don't like using quilting cotton for clothing 😅 To me it's just not the right texture/weight!
the first shirt looks like a moth wing!!
If you're going to play with this for summertime, Dharma's Parakeet does some GORGEOUS splits! I've seen Riah's Tie Dye use it multiple times and it is SO pretty! Also, Shitake Mushroom is another great splitter.:) I'm wondering if you do an incline swirl, a la the crop top, how it will look?
And now I see that you have them... and already got some splits.😂
Absolutely fabulous! That last one is wonderful! Can't wait to see future projects.
But definitely need more green! Blues? Purples?
Thank you Kaytie!
There's a face at the bottom of the mockneck
The first one looks like a moth! I love it!!
Kaleidoscope tank!! 😍
That shirt at the 23min mark looks like a bug queen in a flower garden. :}
Ice/snow dyeing is amazing. These all came out gorgeous.
Thank you! The snow does magic things!
I really enjoyed this. I grew up in the 60's and 70's this process was so popular. Wish I had saved all my clothes. I would have given them all to you. All yours turned out beautiful. Looking forward to the next one.
Thank you Sandra!
Nice. And very curious to see you dye fabric and make some garment yourself. Having said that; I also really liked the shirt/sweater/thingamajig you were wearing whilst presenting the video.
Thank you Marjon!
I first heard about Ice Dying from an article in Threads magazine. I don't remember which issue, but it was at least 5 years ago. I've wanted to try it for a while but we don't have the facilities to do all the washing and rinsing. We're hoping to move sometime soon. though "soon" is an indefinable variable in life. Though you'll probably buy your house before we can move. 😁😏
I am super lucky to have a sink in my sewing room, but I'd like a bigger one in my next place 😂
Oh yes please! More dye videos! Thank you brilliant Bianca💗
Thank you Raini!
