the look on Redford's face when he realizes she isn't coming back is so subtle but so incredibly moving.

From 1:33 to the end is one of the best composed series of shots I’ve ever seen in a film. Also the music really compliments it and makes it a perfect moment.

I read the book “The Horse Whisperer” and for those of you who don’t know, the books ending is much different. After I finished watching the film for the first time a thought crossed my mind, and I had to really think about this before saying, but now after having thought of it for a long time, I think I can say it. I absolutely prefer this ending in the movie than how the book ended it. No spoilers for the book of course but the movie wisely omits much of that stuff and makes this ending significantly better! Still definitely recommend the book for sure tho.

What beautiful heart rendering music and what a lovely film following the lines of Brief Encounter and Bridges on Madison County.
Doing the right thing and breaking your heart at the same time. So very sad.

The book ended much differently. Redford decided to show them doing the right thing. The path they were on would have destroyed her family. He let her go...and she left. It was the right thing to do, broken heart or not. It was the right thing to do.

Is the way we want the perfect family image right?
Is it right to claim a person exclusively for oneself ?
If persons no longer fullfil each others needs and staying together causes pain ?
Let's not deny our human nature and live. Live your life and don't let society decide how you should spend your time on earth.

@@tpilot_error404 At face value, your comment would be correct. However, the movie doesn't just spell out a simple message, it tells the story of multiple characters with a bit more complexity than your average Romantic comedy.
When it comes to this scene, let's start by saying that the relationship between Annie and Tom was never supposed to take place, Annie was a business-woman with a stable family, while Tom had divorced already and had no interest in another love story. Yet when the two met, love bloomed anyways.
As the movie progresses, this impossibility becomes more apparent: Tom even explains that his last wife was a musician who wanted to live in a big city and be successful, while he never cared for what was new and felt happiest among nature in his ranch. While we don't know if Annie would've been as unhappy as Tom's previous wife, staying with Tom would've been completely different from her current life, and so, a big gamble.
Finally, we're also shown that while Annie didn't love Robert (who's her husband and the father of their daughter) anymore, he was also not a bad person in the slightest, and instead loved Annie, which means that she had no reason to leave him and her family except for loving Tom more. That's why she leaves.
Personally, I don't think the movie wants to force the moral that you wrote about keeping the perfect family image no matter the cost, it just shows what Annie chose in the end and how difficult it had been for her. I've read some reviews stating that this movie is excessively melodramatic, but I totally disagree. It may apply to the more forced ending in the book, but this scene is an impeccable showcase of the human nature and its complexity, and the addition of the beautiful orchestral soundtrack by Thomas Newman makes this into one of my personal favourite endings in Cinema.

@@dakotawalker7117 At the same time though, if she stayed, where would that leave Grace? At the beginning she makes everything out to be about herself. At the end of the film, she puts her feelings aside to think about her family. It's not just about the repaired relationship between Grace and Pilgroom, Grace and Annie, it's also Annie's growth.
That's my interpretation anyway, everyone's is different.

This movie in its romance side and especially the last farewell scene reminds me strongly of “ The covered bridges of Madison county “ movie by Clint Eastwood (director also like Robert Redford as well ) )with Merrill Streep ,both have almost same ending farewell scenario with same frustrated compassionate love , and the miracle song of Whitney Houston ♥️♥️😭😢😭

At the end of the book he sent her back to her husband pregnant with his baby. He got kicked in the head by a wild stallion and died. The person who wrote that book has virtually the same ending in every book they've written. Pathetic storylines so women can get in touch with their inner feelings.

I dont like this ending its boring and to abrupt, it just seems to cut the movie. I feel the same ending as the book would have been better. I hope msybe one day they may make a clip that ends the movie like the book. Or remaster the movie with both endings but you pick the one you want to watch
