Hey guys, thanks for the largely positive response to the video, it's certainly one of my personal favourites on the channel. Seeing as a large chunk of the comments are addressing similar films etc I thought I'd give a response that covers a large chunk of them: -Call Me By Your Name was neck and neck with Inside Llewyn Davis for that spot, you guys have definitely made me reconsider :) -When it came to Nicholas Winding Refn films I picked Only God Forgives over Drive because although Drive is a more well rounded and perhaps better film, the latter feels more like Refn at his most visually expressive. -Samsara is more commonly seen as a documentary not a narrative feature so it couldn't be included. -Interstellar and Dunkirk were both verging on wild card as they beautifully changed from the widescreen format to IMAX. -Yes, I'm a Gosling fan and him being in both winners does kind of make him what many of you have proclaimed the most beautiful actor of the decade by default? -Finally, there's a good chunk of people calling me out for films that didn't come out last decade. I'm sorry to tell you but 2009 isn't part of the 2010s :)
The Lighthouse could've probably made it into the wild card category, but I don't think it's better than Grand Budapest Hotel, and that one got eliminated sooo
Unfortunately you forgot Call me by your name, it was so beautifully shot you felt like you literally were in Italy. You could almost taste the fruit they ate, smell the grass and the overall free and romantic vibe of the summer.
I thought it was a beautifully story...extremely well acted and a beautiful soundtrack, but when I personally think of beautiful films visually, that didn't come to mind.
Couldn't have said it better, CMBYN had the best cinematography i've ever seen, this title usually goes to movies that are artistically shot and follow certain troops but this one felt different, authentic and real. I was completely immersed and that being coupled with the beautiful scenery of Italy it was beyond perfection
I'm with Film Buff on this one. It's not traditionally what would be considered the most beautiful, but it just feels so fucking good. The composition and camera movement were so fresh, so young, loved it
@Diego Pisfil what are you talking about? It looks visually stunning still to this day. If its a good film can be debated but I think Gravity should for sure go in a top 10 visually stunning movies personally.
For me it's hands down *The Grand Budapest Hotel* because of how it fits so much to how the movie told its narrative. I mean you can have amazing shots and great use of light, but if they add nothing to the story the movie is telling, then it's basically style over substance. It's as if the cinematography is done for its own sake -- some may be okay with it but I appreciate it more if it goes beyond that. You really can't imagine The Grand Budapest Hotel without its unique cinematography. My top 5 would be: 1. The Grand Budapest Hotel 2. Her 3. Call Me By Your Name 4. La La Land 5. Birdman
Also when you consider the relatively small budget that The Grand Budapest Hotel was made on - they had to use really creative techniques like models to make it work the way it did. And yes, techniques are used for a reason - like the way the aspect ratio changes for layers of the story.
It's absolutely beautiful, but I think photography in CMBYN is more tactile than aesthetic. I suppose I don't express myself very well, but I feel it's more focused on making you smell and taste.
Can you tell me what were the things you loved about Moonlight? I have not been able to fully grasp it, fully understand it? If you could please reveal to me about it...?
@Fede Ferrer Thanks Fede Ferrer for the reply. As you've pointed out the way it's filmed, the color palette as well as the performances and the rawness are certainly it's plus points. But I felt that the story was quite slow paced. In fact I was bored when I watched the film. But the thing is I find that not many people have the same experience. So that means there was something(s) that I missed out in moon light. I wanted to find that out and rectify my cinematic experience of Moonlight.
Secret Life of Walter Mitty has definitely left the biggest mark on me, and I can always remember how beautifully combined the shots were alongside the soundtrack. Also, I just saw The Lighthouse and that was way too unique to ignore. Definitely up there as well.
“Drive” will always be my number one for this decade. I think it’s the most influential to my generation of filmmakers - in both cinematography and its soundtrack. Think how many photographers and visual media indulge in neon lighting since that came out? But obviously Im biased I mean look at my profile pic. (And yes Ryan Gosling of course)
If this movie had been made just a few months later I definitely would have expected the inclusion of "The Lighthouse" on this list. It's one of the best shot films of all time in my opinion and it's a shame that it hasn't gotten more attention.
great video, I was hoping Mad Max Fury Road would have been one of the top 3, that movie blew my mind...that year may have been the greatest year in Beatutiful Films I can remember. Revenant, Mad Max, Hateful 8, Sicario all in the same year!!! thats nuts!!!
I felt every word you said. I would probably choose La la land and Life of Pi as the most beautiful movies of the decade. Both, visually stunning, delicate and deep soundtrack and a solid story that reaches the heart. Great video!
Pure visuals for me Ad Astra and Interstellar. Just can't take my eyes off the screen! Also the Lighthouse and Midsommar for just immersing me in a way like no other.
It blows my mind that “BR2049” was so criminally overlooked by audiences. I was lucky to see it twice in a Dolby Theater and it’s my favorite experience in a movie theater of all time. From the visuals to sound design to production design, the acting, story, and the goddamn score... it’s flawless.... I love that it’s tied with “La La Land”, which I need to rewatch immediately and also say how much I hate how talented Ryan Gosling was, to be able to just *learn* to play piano as he did, for that movie. I’ve been playing all my life. Just fuck that attractive, likable, talented guy so much; he’s amazing.
Call me by your name may not be revolutionary in its achievements in cinematography. But it’s ability to capture the environment is absolutely stunning (and it was filmed with only once lens the entire film) just some food for thought
Great Job Panwa. When I saw the "La La Land" thumbnail I was worried that was what you would spend most of the video on. But you put in the legwork and did your research. Keep up the good work.
I would put as my top 5 (not in any order) Interstellar Arrival Inception Kimi no na wa (your name) Koe no Katachi (A silent voice) Still like your list tho :)
I think The Grand Budapest Hotel deserves to be called the most beautiful film of the decade more than any other film because it so perfectly uses aspect ratios, production design and original cinematography you won’t find anywhere outside a Wes Anderson film that it’s the most memorable and most inspiring.
i was really hoping the florida project would be included. the film is stunningly vibrant, aesthetically sleek, and beautifully radiant in every shape and form. the choice of colors make the film more watchable, giving it a crisp, subtle, and modern look.
My Most Beautiful Films of the Decade: 1. La La Land* 2. Blade Runner 2049* 3. The Grand Budapest Hotel 4. Roma 5. Samsara 6. Ida 7. Macbeth 8. Your Name 9. The Rider 10. Arrival *Honestly the two movies are in a very, very close tie. I chose La La Land for #1 because that's the movie that gave me the reason why I love movies in the first place. Fellow BR2049 fans don't hate me pls.
I saw samsara while on mushrooms and it was most amazing film I had ever seen in this decade, I thought the first one (baraka) was better but it was not from this decade
That movie was bonkers!! I mean I have never seen another movie with those kind of visuals and craziness. I even believe Into the Spiderverse had some visuals inspired by Scott Pilgrim. A complete entertainer!
Just watching the video I can see how hard it is to choose. All these films are great along with many of those not mentioned. Great video doing your best research and analysis on these films!
Before watching fully and just off the dome, my pick probably goes to Blade Runner 2049. Edit: Hey alright! Great list, could not agree more overall. Ryan freaking Gosling huh.
I watched both of these films this week then finding this video and I got to give it to la la land just due to how the beauty of the film in terms of lighting adds to the emotion in an almost pathetic fallacy like manor really playing a part in the story telling as well aa being visually outstanding.
The shot of the Endurance flying across Saturn in Interstellar would definitely fit in your “Ultra Wide” category lmao excellent job putting this together man
for me, the most beautiful film of the decade is at eternity’s gate. i still don’t know how schnabel managed to capture the idiosyncratic way vincent interpreted the world, emotional and raw, by using a subjective camera and so on. it was pure art
when he started talking about the life of pi in 15:18 the soundtrack of bladerunner 2049, specifically the song 'mesa'. it gave me chills. go listen to it NOW
The Last Black Man in San Francisco was absolutely flooring for how beautiful it was. But other then that, you hit the nail on the head. La La Land probably just wins over 2049 simply because of its more classic look. But I think that The Master is one of the most beautiful films shot ever. Period. Up there with Barry Lyndon and In the Mood for Love.
I would've gone with The Revenant then Spiderverse. Blade Runner looks good, but is largely an update to the 80's film. The Fall is the best looking film of the century.
My picks for the most beautiful films from the 2010s, not ranked Samsara The Tree of Life Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole Moonrise Kingdom To the Wonder The Wind Rises Her Interstellar The Grand Budapest Hotel Nightcrawler Song of the Sea Ex Machina Mad Max: Fury Road The VVitch The Hateful Eight Knight of Cups Carol The Revenant Crimson Peak Your Name. The Handmaiden The Red Turtle La La Land The Neon Demon Blade Runner 2049 Phantom Thread Ghost in the Shell Roma Annihilation Mandy The Lighthouse Portrait of a Lady on Fire Midsommar Once Upon a Time in Hollywood
How did you review the films? On Blu-Ray? Big monitor projection? Watching these clips makes me yearning to go back to the theater and watch these films on the big screen.
really nice video, thanks. I totally agree with Bladerunner. but I think there is something that makes the beauty of Bladerunner more intense. and is the music. the feeling of tasting colors in the moth when you hear some music. synesthesia I think. but even with out having that particular capacity it really really pops up the worls around.
I still think Life of Pi edges both. It was truly something extraordinary for the eyes. I watched it on a TV set at home, and the images were burned as an experience. There was nothing like it and nothing like it since.
Nothing groundbreaking in Interstellar. I love Nolan but Inception is much more technically perfect movie with better storytelling and visuals too. Even Prestige is a better contender than Interstellar. Though.. the score of Interstellar is most definitely both figuratively and literally *out of this world* experience
I think it's a huge disservice to the medium of film to exclude nearly the entire animation industry (hand drawn and 3D) for your 25most beautiful films of the decade. I understand this is an opinion piece, and thus is not subject to objectivity, but hear me out. The greatest strength of animation is the fact as a creator, you can make exactly what you envision, there are no limits to what you can put on a screen, unlike live action which have numerous constraints. While Into the spiderverse is undoubtedly an amazing film film and a respectable entry into the animation genre, we're talking 10years of American, European, Middle Eastern, and most importantly Asian animation, Spiderverse just feels like a token inclusion rather than a genuine nomination. Moana, isle of Dogs, Rango, The Wind Rises, Lego Movie, Kubo and the 2 strings, Your Name, Princess Kaguya and so many other movies are some of the most beautiful animated features the world has ever created.
@@thezokil What??? You complained that animated movies were "excluded", then you won't accept an animated movie was included, because of who made it! Curious what your argument against considering Spiderverse an animated movie will be. "Yeah, but that doesn't count, because it had a Spiderman in it".
Hey guys, thanks for the largely positive response to the video, it's certainly one of my personal favourites on the channel. Seeing as a large chunk of the comments are addressing similar films etc I thought I'd give a response that covers a large chunk of them:

-Samsara is more commonly seen as a documentary not a narrative feature so it couldn't be included.
-Interstellar and Dunkirk were both verging on wild card as they beautifully changed from the widescreen format to IMAX.
-Yes, I'm a Gosling fan and him being in both winners does kind of make him what many of you have proclaimed the most beautiful actor of the decade by default?
-Finally, there's a good chunk of people calling me out for films that didn't come out last decade. I'm sorry to tell you but 2009 isn't part of the 2010s :)
I’m glad you said “so far” in the title because Cats just soared so far above all of these
Haha
LOOOLLL
I know you're joking but there's a part of me that believes youre not
XD
Look past the strange atmosphere and the awkward cgi and cats is actually a genius film. There’s a lot more going on in the film then meets the eye.
I just love that scene in Dunkirk where the soldiers are walking down the street with the papers flying around them
Such a beautiful scene and so underrated
Love that btoo
Jason Adams yes
Right before Fionn Whitehead got one of those papers to use to wipe his ass
Yeah, the opening shot of Dunkirk is BEAUTIFUL!
La La Land, Whiplash, Interstellar, Blade Runner 2049, A Ghost Story, The Grand Budapest Hotel, and many many more.
ye
Ad astra is beautiful as well
1917 but its too late
Juliano I don’t know why no one talks about Silence?? Definitely Scorsese’s most visually impressive film
Juliano not whiplash
ryan gosling is the lead actor for both of the 2 most beautiful movies of the decade lol
What can I say? The guy makes good choices :)
I guess that makes him the most beautiful actor of the decade.
Most beautifully shot actor*
He was in the running in Only God Forgives (and Drive) as well haha
@@ryanpatricksmith5795 Drive is a musical masterpiece, that or i'm listening to synthwave so much lately
The Lighthouse. It's miserable looking, but so stylized that it's breathtaking at the same time.
@Flugshub, and it feels very claustrophobic
@@30minorlessshortfilms4 its square frame has a part to play in it as well !!
The Lighthouse could've probably made it into the wild card category, but I don't think it's better than Grand Budapest Hotel, and that one got eliminated sooo

guido Aguirre great advice for any director. Get Ryan Gosling, a beautiful movie will arise
i know call me by your name probably just missed being on the categories, but god i was rooting for it
Camila Aguilar 🤨
YES YES YES
It was so damn beautiful.
sameee. one of the best films ever made
Nah
La La Land and Blade Runner 2049 are literally tied as my favorite film of the decade.... nice
Same here
Vann Guarnieri so your a Ryan gosling fan
I love la la land
Two of the best scores of the decade also
patpallopoika
Biased scores, The social network, Inception, and Interstellar had better ones

I'm with Film Buff on this one. It's not traditionally what would be considered the most beautiful, but it just feels so fucking good.
The composition and camera movement were so fresh, so young, loved it
So glad that Life of Pi made it that far, that movie resonated with me for years, not just visually, the story was captivating for how simple it was.
Your channel is criminally small, considering the sheer quality of the videos you produce.
Wow! Thank you so much, that means a lot :)
I would also have put the following:
Sicario
Arrival
Dunkirk
Interstellar
Mommy
Gravity
Avatar
@Diego Pisfil Looks like vve got a genius on our hands...
That scene at the end of Dunkirk where Hardy’s plane is gliding over the beach at sunset, completely out of fuel...that took my breath away
Diego Pisfil never said they were good but they are visually stunning
Sebastien Desharnais-Martin interstellar is so good
@Diego Pisfil what are you talking about? It looks visually stunning still to this day. If its a good film can be debated but I think Gravity should for sure go in a top 10 visually stunning movies personally.
Spoiler Alert : Ryan Gosling is the winner
Her is honestly one of the best decade film so far, it’s so poignant, introspective and super emotionally charged
I just watched LA LA LAND for probably the tentht time. It's not only stunningly beautiful, but makes me smile and sing.
Absolutely adored both LA LA LAND and BLADE RUNNER: 2049, so I'm happy with these results. Great breakdown!

Blade Runner 2049 is an eye candy gem to look at.

i would replace birdman and put in blade runner and i agree with the rest
Spider-Man: Into The Spiderverse
Probably not the best at storytelling but hot damn it is a beauty
@Divide Films yeah was asking myself the same thing.
Not the best because other contenders were much better at that department.
My fav animation movie
Pretty good storytelling anyway
Are you shitting me? The themes in into the Spider-Verse are insane and the story is incredible.
call me by your name was an absolutely stunning film, i can’t believe you didn’t even mention it
Just what i was thinking about
It was beautifully shot but its not really top contender worthy, like parasite. Solid cinematography but not the strongest part of the film
lawrence maybe, but i definitely think it at least deserved a mention. it was stunning both visually and in every other way
It's absolutely beautiful, but I think photography in CMBYN is more tactile than aesthetic. I suppose I don't express myself very well, but I feel it's more focused on making you smell and taste.
Exactly omg
Moonlight and Call Me By Your Name
Gayest films of the decade and the most beautiful
Can you tell me what were the things you loved about Moonlight? I have not been able to fully grasp it, fully understand it? If you could please reveal to me about it...?

The Last Black Man in San Francisco was absolutely flooring for how beautiful it was. But other then that, you hit the nail on the head. La La Land probably just wins over 2049 simply because of its more classic look. But I think that The Master is one of the most beautiful films shot ever. Period. Up there with Barry Lyndon and In the Mood for Love.
call me by your name came to mind when i read the title
I would've gone with The Revenant then Spiderverse. Blade Runner looks good, but is largely an update to the 80's film. The Fall is the best looking film of the century.
Death Striker do you mean the fall 2006? If yes then yeah I argree with you

The perks of being a wallflower
I still think Life of Pi edges both. It was truly something extraordinary for the eyes. I watched it on a TV set at home, and the images were burned as an experience. There was nothing like it and nothing like it since.
Honestly, I think The Tree of Life is the most beautiful film I have ever seen. There's just a sort of spiritual quality to it, it's hard to explain.
Agreed. Seeing Tree of Life on the big screen is one of the great cinematic experiences I have had.
@@michaelz9892 I actually never saw it on the big screen, but I imagine it's amazing with surround sound.
Blade Runner 2049
I’m devastated that Interstellar isn’t there :/
Nothing groundbreaking in Interstellar. I love Nolan but Inception is much more technically perfect movie with better storytelling and visuals too. Even Prestige is a better contender than Interstellar. Though.. the score of Interstellar is most definitely both figuratively and literally *out of this world* experience
@@fmkhan213 oh my... just play it once more please, it's absolutely visually stunning :)
It's a crime to not put Call Me By Your Name on this list
Beautiful and Ryan Gosling are basically synonyms
Isle of Dogs was included to be fair
@@emajossch4442 yeah but thats Less an animated feature, and more a Wes Anderson Movie that just happened to be stop motion.
@@thezokil What??? You complained that animated movies were "excluded", then you won't accept an animated movie was included, because of who made it! Curious what your argument against considering Spiderverse an animated movie will be. "Yeah, but that doesn't count, because it had a Spiderman in it".
