hello, did these photos shot on full frame camera?
Thanks for the excellent review Julia!
I am still using my Sigma 35, 50 and 85 1.4 Art lenses for my street style portraits. When I shoot with professional models, I always stick to the 35 and 50, because I can get more creative with the environment, and compsition.
When I shoot outdoor portraits of my clients (non-models), I always use the 85mm, to give them breathing room, and also to 'wow' them with the background blur, usually they don't care about creative environmental shots as much, they want the "blurry pro" look.
I have always tried to narrow down my set to 35 and 85, but I am continously using the 50mm in the recent years, because there are specific cases, where you need just a little bit more compression and blur compared to the 35, but you still don't want to lose the background, like it happens with the 85.
Most commonly I carry the 85 and the 50, but when I shoot models, its usually bring the 85 and 35, or all 3 lenses.... I really wish I could narrow it down to only 2 lenses to save lot of weight, but I just can't...
Yes I love that!! I tend to do the same thing as well :D I also feel like the 35 and 85 are a magical combination, but sometimes there are cases where you just need that look in the middle with the 50!
But I feel like only having a 3 lens setup is still a very good balance. Some photographers own up to 5 lenses that they think are "necessary" and lug around all that gear everywhere thinking they have to use them all, and you're here with only 3 primes and using them all. That's pretty good imo
Sigma 85 1.4 Art Super sharp, except it's weight.
When using the 50, how far back would you need to be from model in order to avoid distortion?
I did my first portrait shoot this weekend. Your tips make total sense. I also found that I kept on having to step back when shooting with the 85mm depending on the shot required. Next time I will definately bring in the 50mm. With later, 'fuller' shots of the couple, I changed over to the 24 - 70mm and this helped to be able to take a step back and compose some group couple shots. Thanks again!
Just recently came across your channel, and I love how informative you are! Thank you for your great content!
I love seeing your older work ESPECIALLY your photos for white magazine! They are so beautiful and magical! I love garden photo shoots!
Thank you so much 💛 Those photoshoots were so much fun to be a part of!
One of the best photography technique videos I've seen ever. Thank you.
Favorite points:
-effects on the background: hide, obscure mundane bgs, include engaging bgs
-effects on your proximity to the subject: easier communication w subject, more/less intimate, giving subject space and possibly leading to more genuine emotion
Only second video I've watched, looking forward to watching more.
Seriously underrated channel. Your ability to talk about things like the amount of background and perspective with different focal length is just unseen these days. You can tell your actually using these lenses then looking at them with your eyes, rather than pixel peeping the absolute corners of a lens for sharpness wide open. Good job. I have both these lenses. Deciding between ordering either the 241.L II or 35L II, Or 35L I today. Leaning more toward the 24 but ill have both eventually.
Those are some beautiful photos and an interesting discussion . I’ve always been hesitant of using a 50mm for portraits - preferring the slight tele of the 85mm but I may have to give it another shot. Thank you for giving me the nudge to try it again 😀.
My favourite lenses at present would be Canon’s 85mm F1.8 and 70-200mm f2.8LII at 135mm. I’ve recently added Fujifilm to my set up and though it’s early days, the 56mm F1.2 has also really impressed me.
Really great to hear your reasoning for using both of these. Great video, love watching your content :)
Always a delight to view your clips Julia. Thanks for sharing & ‘educating’ newbies like me. Much appreciated. Thanks again 👍🏻
Another awesome video and interesting to see the shot differences between the 2 lenses. Also that’s a really nice top you have on. Really suits you
Thanks julia - this is really helpful. Your photos are beautiful- especially love the ethereal shots of bride with the old iron chair.
wow... you explain things so easily and make it sound so simple.
Your videos are so so helpful, so glad I “found” you on UA-cam! I’m I’m so grateful you’re posting and showing us some of your amazing work :)
Thank you!
Love the close intimacy of the 50 but advice about non-models needing a little more space and ability to blur out distractions spot on 👍🏻
Your videos are great, very clear, concise and on point, and your unpretentious way to present and share all this knowledge is very much appreciated, thank you!
I can’t thank you enough for all your videos and tips. They’ve really evolved my skills in photography. I’ve never gotten the reactions I do now 🙌
Thank you! 💛
You explain everything so well. Love your videos!
Great video!! Love your style of photography! Breathtakingly beautiful! Was trying to decide which lens to get. Much appreciated!
i think everybody needs both! :P
at the moment sadly i just own an 50, but would love to buy an 85 soon!
thanks for sharing this great content with us, really enjoyed watching this
Your photos are truly beautiful. I get inspired every time i watch your videos. Thank you.
Thank you so much :)
At least for me (just my opinion) the 35mm coupled with 85mm are a great combo. Also the shots @5:38 are stunning!
I rarely take my 50 1.2 off my camera. I shoot fine art photography and occasionally landscape. Love the lens! But the 85 looks wonderful.
Your channel is brilliant! I've learnt a lot from you. Thanks!
Absolutely brilliant. Well explained. I would like to try that 85mm pitch side during a goal incident when shooting soccer. At its widest aperture you well go well beyond the usual f2.8 and completely blur out the background possibly keeping the foreground action sharp.
Before I shot lots of portraits with my 50mm on my crop canon camera. However, having switched to full frame 6D, I actually prefer the 50 better on the full frame. I like getting more of the background in the shots, well when/where it's nice enough to be worth it.
Love your explanations and reasons why you work in certain way:) keep shooting lovely:)
Your videos are so clear and concise. Thanks so much 😊
Great comparison. Definitely going to invest in a 85 mm lens.
Agreed ... excellent explanation of the qualities of both lenses.
Hey Julia, amazing video! Your pictures look beautiful:)
One word: Fabulous. You have helped me make up mind among many reviewers. Thank you!
Glad to help!
I just bought an 85mm lens last month and your right its more cooped and brings the subject closer I have not been able to use it a lot but the shots I have taken with both the 50mm and the 85mm I find the 50mm is more wider and gets more of the background in the shot
Nice video! My new favorite lens is the Sigma 100 1.4 Art. Super sharp and gives all the advantages of the 85.
Thank you! Ooh I would love to try out that lens!
Thank you so much Julia! keep it up and take care! regards from Switzerland :)
Beautiful video thank you for the amazing explanation and keep up the good work !
You have amazing photos! great job
Beautiful as always... Gorgeous
Wow, thank you for the valuable information! I usually watch videos without signing into my account but after watching this video, I couldn't move on without liking and subscribing to your channel! Great video!!
Great video. Thanks for pointing out it's not the focal length that determines how much background you see. It's all about how close or far away you are. I prefer the 85 due to the distortion you get up close with the 50. Yes I get that close lol.
Thank you so much. Your video answered every question I had in mind to ask. You're awesome and Thank you for sharing👌
Thank you, Julia!
This video helps me to understand more about 50 and 85 . Thanks a lot . Appreciate
I’ll def be using my 50mm 1.8 STM for the time being but I can’t wait to get the 85mm down the road!
Thanks for the video.
I like to use the 50mm for full-length portraits and 3/4 length portraits.
I like to use the 85mm for half-length portraits and head & shoulder portraits.
The only lens we have besides the kit is the 50mm 1.8, so we tend to use that one more often. But we have a crop sensor camera, so it acts more like an 80mm or so.
Wow this video is very informative on how both lenses can be used. Seems like it's good to have both in your arsenal. However. I will definitely start off with the 50.
Thank you so much and I just subscribed!!
Hi Julia! Very nice review on the two lenses and when you like to use them! You had a lot of clear examples for us to observe, which I appreciated! I hope you are having a lovely day! Cheers my friend :)
Thank you Alex! Glad you liked it :D
i think it would be really cool if you did a video on how to pitch to brands - how to get them to hire you for lookbook photography or photo campaigns!
Amazing photo and great review Julia👍.I love both❤️.I am using sigma 20 1.4art,canon 35 f1.4ii.tamron 45 f1.8vc,canon 85 f1.2ii,canon 135 f2 and canon 70-300 nano usm on my canon 5d iii😇.
I really enjoyed your video. I would have gotten a better feel for which lens I liked better if both side by side examples were the same model, same pose. We'll soon have snow (Anchorage, AK) and I'm looking forward to trying both len's for winter portraits, any snowy portrait experience you can share is appreciated. Nice work and thankyou for producing this video.
I find the 85mm f1.2 is actually sharper than the 50mm f1.2, so I usually picked that over the 50mm. Also I like the compression. However having listened to your comments, I think I am going to explore the 50mm focal length more for shooting portraits.
I love the way sigma art 85mm f1.4 looks because it has a decent bokeh
This is all I wanted mainly on these focal length makes me very much confused to brought . .am migrating from Crop sensor to 35mm full sensor so you had help me to choosing 50mm to stick with.Thank you 🎯
Hi Julia. I love your videos❤️ Could you make another tutorial talk about how to meter the exposure in different lighting situations? Thank you:)
Thank you for this video! It helped a lot!
absolutely amazing video
Love watching your videos very informative , greetings from the States ....
Thanks so much for the info, really helpful!
Thanks for the info, I have made my decision, I am going to go for the 50mm lens first, then I will get the 85mm lens later when I can afford it.
but fcourse you will, yu can find the plastic one for 50 bucks
I think you should save for the 85mm rather than buying 50mm
Thank you so much! Now I'm sure I'll buy the 50mm:)
Thanks for the vid! I'm in the process of upgrading my equipment. I have a 50mm 1.2 and the 85mm 1.2 should be delivered today!
Hi Julia, Im so impressed by the videos that you use for filming, could you please let me know what camera it is. Thanks
Great teaching video I have the 50 mm f 1.2 and you help me a lot
To the point! Excellent!
It all depends on your style. My fav portrait lens is the cheap Nikkor 180mm f2.8
Great video helped me decide which lens to get
Good point on communications 'access' distance. But I use Bluetooth instructions that are relayed via a stylist standing just out of the frame. Luxury. I'm hooked on 35 , 105 or 135 for my portraits/fashion but use the 200 for tight heads.
That really is a luxurious set up for a photoshoot!
Wow made me choice so clear to go for 50mm. I like to not move whole a lot either when taking photography.
Thank you for the two different lenses for portrait. nice video
Hi Julia, great video. looking forward to c a 135mm review in the future. Cheers
one of my favorite youtube channel. i hope you release video post processing techniques. just an idea.
Thank you! I have lots of Lightroom tutorials up on my channel already, which is what I use to edit my photos :)
I would like to try the 85mm since where I live there is really no good locations. But both capture beautiful photos
Thank you for the very informative video!
hi Julia,
thank you so much for your videos - big fan!
i am currently struggeling on deciding on 85 1,8 and 50 1,4 (having a 50 1,8 in my bag already but no 85 at all). i really get your point that the 50 is more versatile but 85 is tempting (as well as 1,4 on the 50...)
what would you do in this setting (and on a budget)?
hey julia, you have been amazing all these years..
could you please share a video (tips/demo) on group portrait or family shoot. will really appreciate if you can share the details like what kind of camera settings, focus mode n focus point, lenes you ll prefer for such shoot.
-lots of love n blesses
Thank you and yes! I love that idea for a video :)
Love this detailed description and valuable opinion from you, Thanks a bunch... Look forward to the next video!!!
Thank you!
All the way from under 5K Subs to 124K .
There's a reason for that Julia ,
and the reason is you.
Excellent work
Thank you 💛
oh please!!! just tell her you have a woody
Very useful video Julia, great portraits, love to watch your videos and learn. you work inspires me a lot ;) thumbs up! ;)
Thank you so much :)
I have an 85mm G Master f1.4 and Sigma FE Art 50mm f1.4, but the 85mm focal length does give some amazing results.
Another super video. My favourite lense is a 50mm f1.4 as I do more portrait than any other genre and follow your behind scene videos to gain ideas and techniques. Please carry on doing lots more behind scene videos. You are an inspiration and such a talented and creative photographer.
Thank you so much, I really appreciate it!
Great review. Love those pictures. just put this for more notions; the 85 mm is designed for indoor portraits with available light; it can be used for outdoor portraits when composed with environmental perspective. But If you precisely shoot outdoor portraits on location, just try 135mm and 180mm or 70-200 mm. It is because your location and distance always tell your specific type of lens. The 50 mm can do a half-body people shots but it’s not considered a portrait lens due to its distortion and short length.
Wow, your photos look amazing. Are they only natural light or do you use some kind of flash / reflector..? It seems like the person's stand out so nicely
I used a 50 mm Nikon with a .5 teleconverter in my youth. Cheap and easy, fast and fun.
I'm definitely inspired! 📸
I got the ones that come with my camera 😅😅 and the 50mm which I love I need to learn to use it better! I love your photography is so dreamy and elegant 🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻
Hello just saw your video and loved it but have a question which one would you use for a family portrait with 4 people
My favorite combo to take is sigma 35 1.4 and canon 85mm 1.2. I had the 50 1.2 and found myself wishing I had the 85 1.2 with me instead.
Thank you!!!Very interesting and helpful
Excellent video, I enjoy your presentations. I love a lens of from 50 to 58mm for portraits with a crop format camera and will use it on a full frame camera for full body portraits and environmental portraits. I also enjoy shooting with my Sony 85mm f/1.8 on my A6500 crop frame camera which gives me an equivalent 127.5mm focal length. That in mind, I like the 85mm to 135mm focal length for full frame cameras.
I use a Sony SEL 50mm f/1.8 lens on my crop sensor A6500 but really like the focal length of my vintage 55mm f/1.4 Auto Sears or the 58mm F/2.0 Russian Helios lenses. I think that the new Sigma 56mm f/1.4 lens might be just the ticket for head and shoulders portraits. But, the 50mm OSS lens does a good enough job that I don't think that I will switch.
I use my Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 lens for my Canon 6D Mark-2 and consider that a great combination. I have an Canon EF 135mm f/2.8 SF lens and that is a decent choice for the full frame Canon if you don't dial in any soft focus...
I use the 85mm f/1.8 Sony and 85mm f/1.8 Canon lenses rather than f/1.2 or f/1.4 aperture lenses because of the weight, size and price of the f/1.8 models. These smaller maximum aperture lenses also focus a bit more quickly than the f/1.2 or f/1.4 lenses...
with crop sensor cameras, 85 mm can be a bit too difficult to work with because of it's extremely narrow FOV (you need to have a lot of space to move around to capture something rather than a close-up). 35 mm and 50 mm are way more versatile because of their bigger FOV. Having said that, the most beautiful portraits I produced throughout my career were captured with 85 mm lens. It blurs the background so much it almost looks surreal. I'd say 85 mm is fantastic for those dreamy portraits with blurry background but it does require a lot of space especially on crop sensor cameras.
So the 85 on a 80d would be. 110 mm with crop
I owned 50L it was great for portraits, I also used it for macro with ext tubes. 50L with ext tube is macro dreamy bokeh monster. Need to buy it again.
Why are you so cute! 😍
The way you speak, the way you explain, everything is just amazing.👌
I recently did a maternity shoot with an 85 was worried that it would put too much distance between me and the subject but it didn't and I'm really happy with the results! I would just pose/direct her/them then back up till I liked the frame. You can also do stuff like the brenizer method with an 85. I guess what I'm trying to say is i love 85mm focal length lmao 😂
Nice comparion. I also like your review about ef 50mm f1.2L :) I love this lens too.
I'm curious about the comparison or difference of feeling between ef 85mm f1.2 and ef 85mm f1.4 IS.
I'm using ef 85mm f1.4 IS, but I'm also curious of ef 85mm f1.2...
So beautiful 😊
Very informative, thank you
I absolutely love the background blur which makes me gravitate towards the 85 but based on what you said, in case I want to show off the background I’d be in trouble. Would I be able to tweak the settings in a way that the 50 could produce a lot of background blur?
(I want to get a lens for Instagram “basic influencer stuff” photography lol, and would also use it for family trips/family photos. Would the 50 be better for that?)
Your videos are very helpful deciding what lens gives what compression. I mainly shoot on my crop sensor camera with a sigma 18-35 f1.8 as it gives me the ability to compress and decompress zooming in or out😁 on my 5d mark ii however I shoot with 50 and 85 f1.8 as we know how bad the focus can be on this camera given heavier glass😉(5dmkii because straight out of camera it gives you that film like look I haven’t seen later)
I just got the 85mm 1.2 II and it’s a great lens! My next lens will be the 50mm 1.2!
Wow this is such a helpful video
