I am an old boomer passionate about all kinds of music and also a hobby musician, as a drummer and keyboard player. I was invited by an old friend of mine to a Band Maid concert in London, I didn't know anything about Band Maid and my friend said nothing and smiled. We managed to be the first in front of the stage, in a small theater, I saw simple instruments and a small drumset, with a strange plush fish on a guitar effects pedal, there was large white writing behind the drum set " Band Maid "and I asked my friend, did you take me to see some fucking waitresses? did we really leave Milan by plane in a hurry, to see some Maids? Then lights went out and powerful rock music and the Maids entered decisively on the stage they took their position and without any comment or warning a storm of musical power exploded as I had never heard for a long time, stuff to straighten body hair and destroy timpani but with perfect audio with an emphasis on bass and drums. I could hear Misa's bass rising from the floor, Akane's drums in my bones, perfect audio, great power, but you could hear every little detail. At first I was confused but within seconds I got in tune with this crazy group of girls. In the first song after the opening, this girl in black, just over 160cm tall and weighing 45kg or less, advances up to a meter from me and starts singing and I melt like a high school kid, I could hear her voice natural directly, an absurd intonation, as you can rarely find in concert, spectacular vocal combinations and choruses with little Miku on my left, a really biting super distorted dry rhythm guitar without sustain, always in counter-tempo with intriguing rhythms, on my right a crazy agitated that she is practically always in a continuous solo for all the songs, Kanami is truly unique, lost in her world with her head down she dances and plays, then raises her head smiles and closes her eyes lost in her notes, then she advances part of the solo and she comes with the neck of the guitar almost in the teeth, you are almost confused watching those little hands slide on that neck in an almost impossible way, she transforms the guitar into a generator of the emotions. MIsa all alone on the left dances and plays barefoot all in black and when you see how she goes from pick to slap and back to pick, you wonder, how does she do it? MIsa is not a normal bassist or simply good, Misa does a whole concert for her facts. I've never seen a bass player play so many notes, it goes up and down the neck you expect it to catch fire From my experience I think that Misa plays on average double or triple the notes of any other bassist, she finds her melodies sometimes pop sometimes Jaz it is not clear which planet Misa comes from. Akane is a shocking drummer in concert, she has a precision and dynamics that are not perfectible, passages for the drum rig at non-human speeds, crazy double-kick bursts, and then she always smiles and has fun she looks like a child who enjoys breaking everything with hammers, she continuously varies tempos and fills, you can't figure out which is her basic setting, she plays, fast like Carl Palmer, original like Coupland, powerful like Bonham, intriguing like Portnoy, but Akane really rocks you, she brings you inside the songs he drags with her in her absurd rhythms, her drumlines are original and perfect for every song. After that concert I ran after Band Maid for half of Europe and I saw three others, and it was always like the first time, even better, a great emotion, hello great reaction you understand music, there are few left.
What can be confirmed: Jimmy Page was at one of their performances and asked to go backstage to meet Akane. They met, talked for a while, and took a photo together. Nobody knows what Jimmy Page told Akane besides Jimmy Page, Akane, and perhaps the person who took the photograph. Akane was excited about meeting a rock legend, of course, but all she reported on the matter was that Page said 'very encouraging words' to her. Fans do Akane a severe disservice when they perpetuate this story about Bonham. She's not the kind of person who would publicly claim Bonham's mantle even if that's what was said. Drawing Page's attention is a huge compliment already. There's no reason to make an amazing true story completely unbelievable with an 'Oh yeah, well I caught a fish THIS BIG' exaggeration.
Akane has stated what Jimmy Page told her. The photo was taken backstage at the "Classic Rock [magazine] Roll of Honor Awards" show held in Tokyo on Nov. 11, 2016, and on Nov. 14 Akane posted the photo and wrote that Jimmy Page told her (translating her Japanese), "Your playing was wonderful." B-M played "Thrill" after receiving an award, which is what Page was referring to. Page was a presenter at the awards show---not to B-M but to Jeff Beck.
Per Akane interview, JImmy told her "you play good drums" and asked for a photo. No mention of Bonham. The legendary Akane needs no phony embellishment. SHE IS A GODDESS
@9:27 sir I'm a computer engineer working here in Silicon Valley. My second line manager at Intel, knows Jimmy Page personally. When I asked him regarding this incident. He informed me that Mr. Page had indicated that Akane reminded him of John Bonham and at a couple of places in various songs sounded like a reincarnation of John Bonham. He ended with stating that Akane is one of the best drummers that he has ever heard.
Even before I became aware of the Page meeting...Akane had already become my fav drummer EVER!..I LOVE her style...I LOVE her creativity...And all done with a BEAUTIFUL smile!..She makes me happy..And to watch her play fills my heart with joy...I can't ask for more as a drum fan (did play abit a longtime ago).
Jimmy did not say that but there is one soul who keep saying that. He said that he really likes her drumming. He does not say that to every drummer. He asked her to be on a picture together.
this. The story from Akane herself is only "he told me he liked my drumming and wanted a picture together" which is much more believable, and thats good enough for me.
We live in the era of Band Maid. Everyone else is fighting over second place. This is the best rock band on planet earth 🌍 today - the most interesting while creating the most accessible, fun and exciting rock music of anyone, anywhere. To this ol’ Beatles, The Who, Zeppelin, YES, Floyd and Rush fan, I’m continually floored by how good they are - in the creative process, in the studio and live. And they just keep getting better and better. Genius.
Saw Zep in 79 and they were THE best Rock band on Earth at the time. Now, 43 years later, Band-Maid deserve that title. Whatever JP said to Akane (possibly "Say cheese!" based on the famous photo), it was undoubtedly a great moment for Akane to be complimented by such a legend. RIP Bonzo.
Jimmy Page was impressed with Akane so much he want to meet her.... at some Japanese Award gala thingy.. , and we have all seen the photo. What was said is between Jimmy and Akane, who knows??. As we know from Akane, it was words of encougement..... "Teacher to pupil". This John Bonham BS started from a simple photo of appreciation / recognition. The JB thing is BS ......However, Akane is really super talented.... As for your comment on Akane, Kanami and MISA..... They are Band Maid's "Holy Trinity".
Akane posted a couple of days after meeting Page that he told her (translating from her Japanese), "Your playing was wonderful." The song B-M played was "Thrill".
@@stevehall5128 Each band/artist that was awarded played a song. In promotions for the awards show it was stated that Jimmy Page would perform with Jeff Beck, but it turned out Page presented an award to Beck but didn't play. People complained and the promoters offered money back to anyone who bought a ticket.
No matter what kind of concert Band-Maid puts on, you'll appreciate their writing, execution and special "Maid Sound" that is unique to this incredible group of Women. In fact, Band-Maid's music is so distinctive, I think there should be an entirely new subgenre of rock called, "Maid Rock!" Thx, Eric!
"Different" was used as an opening song for the anime "Log Horizon" (A show about being stuck in a computer game). This is why the spinning, falling and fast action feel to the song.
Late to this party, but I appreciate the comparison to John Entwistle. Again, they are both their own bassists with their own personality and style, but they both have fantastic tone, they both are active while not flamboyant, neither draw attention to themselves but are a major force in their bands. The MISA/Akane combination is a truly elite rhythm section. BTW, MISA said in an interview that she dialed it back a bit for "Different." It was getting pretty chaotic ... which is what the "Log Horizon" producers wanted.
I wholeheartedly second your call to stop comparing musicians for the purpose of arguing that one is better than another. There is so much top-level talent and creativity to understand and appreciate. It's a self-limiting waste of time to get hung up on debates over simplistic rankings.
BAND-MAID are something else! In my humble opinion, they're the greatest hard rock band around today and probably the last 30-40 years or more! Fantastic musicians, fantastic song writers and fantastic performers! The story about Robert Plant and his meeting with A-chan seems to be exaggerated once every week. He loved her drumming and it reminded him of John Bonham and he loved what she was doing on the drums...nothing more than that. It's true though he wanted to meet her due to that.
I could not agree more with your comments on Akane. I've been primarily focused on the drums since, basically, I learned to walk and became a drummer after seeing ELP in concert (when I was 9 years old in..ahem..1974. I'm not old. YOU"RE OLD!) 🤣 Akane, from what I've heard is completely unique. She's not only technically gifted and keeps time like the proverbial atomic clock, it's her creative CHOICES! She's ASTOUNDING! The whole band is ASTOUNDING! Thanks Eric! 🕊
What was said between Mr Page and A-chan was a private conversation that no one heard but the two of them. What is not in dispute was he sought her and only her out after listening to bands all day. Akane thought she was being punked but quickly found out she wasn't. The only time she spoke about it she said, "Jimmy Page-san offered me many words of encouragement and I promised him that l would do my best to live up to his kind words." That's the extent of it. Much later when Tony Viscontti called them up to ask if he could produce a song for them the band, once again, thought they were being punked and again they weren't. When you get five people of such incredible talent who are united in purpose you get a once in a lifetime band. It is just that simple.
I think there are three levels to Band Maid songs. On the surface it's just a great hard rock song and can be appreciated as such. Then under that lower in the mix there is a lot more going on. Then on top of that it's pretty women dressed sexy singing songs that are often more than a little naughty and also fun. If you aren't appreciating all 3 of those things then you are missing out.
“Black Sunshine” is a good comparison for “Dice”, mixed with Fall Out Boy or some 2000s pop punk. The “Dice” recording has juicier produced distortion on the riff, so I’m glad you like this live version. “Different” is less chaotic here cuz they compressed the heck out of the studio version IMO. Some BM fans do get carried away about the Jimmy Page meets Akane moment, but there are 2 facts: Page sought her out, and there is a pic of them together. Thanks for sincerely paying attention to Bandmaid! You think there’s a chance in hell that they get on US rock radio if they don’t speak English?

@@sacluvsBM No no. The photo was taken at the "Classic Rock Roll of Honor Awards" show held in Tokyo Nov. 11, 2016---the first time it was held in Tokyo and the last time it was held at all. You win dealing with the myth. Here my thing , I am okay with Myths in any band history, but that ones been a contentious one with BAND-MAID a long time.
Love your analysis Eric. Akane is the happiest drummer alive. And so relaxed. She always says she's nervous but you would never know it. Band-Maid is too Awesome for words. So let's prove that statement with ONSET-LIVE which is the coolest and most enjoyable Rock instrumental I've ever seen. Am I biased toward Band-Maid? You decide. Peace. 7.68
Pretty biased. There are some fantastic instrumentals. Orion by Metallica comes to mind. I would put Onset at the next level below Orion personally. Which is still high praise.
@@Dragon-Believer Gotcha buddy. Sometimes a little hyperbole goes a long way. I don't think I've heard all the millions of instrumentals out there. And I did specify Rock instrumentals. I'm gladly biased for Band-Maid. I've been listening to Rock for over 50 years and the Awesome BAND-MAID is the only current band on any of my playlists. 😎 I will check out Orion.
@@jkkansasband7056 well, rock and metal is a little arbitrary. Onset is arguably heavier than Orion. Even though Metallica is unquestionably a heavier band. I think if you played both songs to someone who knew nothing about either band they would have a hard time deciding which was the metal band and which was the rock band.
@@Dragon-Believer 100% agree Scott. I did listen to Orion and IMHO it's not as unique and fun as Onset to listen to. We all know music is about personal taste and my opinion is no more valid than anyone else's. Maybe Eric will react to ONSET or not but he'll be missing out on one of Band-Maid's shining moments for sure. 😎
Good picks, you get to compare songs from two different eras of Band-Maid. They've been evolving from straight-up rock to barely-controlled chaos. I think "Yolo" gave hints of what is to come, in case you have not seen that one. Most creative band since the Beatles, IMO.
I agree what you said about Akane. It amazes me how Akane can keep up with the crazy rifts from Kanami and both keep the beat and add flourishes. And Misa's work to keep and set the pace was amazing.
Thanks for a really considered and enthusiastic reaction to my favourite band. Hope you keep 'em coming and 'Cheers' from your new subscriber in the UK.
I'm 60 .. weaned on Sabbath et 'al and Akane is as good as JB nuff said! Great reaction :) Oooh and if Geezer B was dead, MISA would be the reincarnation of him but a damn sight prettier . But GB is still my favourite Lead Bassist.
Band-Maid is playing in the Nickelodion theater in the American Dream mall Oct 30. Tickets are still available. I'm going to the NY and the NJ concerts. Let's Go!!!!
Saiki was commanding in Different. She has said that she likes fast, complicated lyrics. MISA has been compeared by others to the "Ox"(John Entwhistle). Good knowledge and reaction again.
Akane and Misa are my Favorite Groove Section on earth. It like their music writeing Minds are magically connected. And they are both Originally Jazz ers and Funk Players. and they went to the same music School Class.
I have compared Misa to the late great John Entwistle but she is a way more beautiful version. ( I met John a few times around the pool at our condo in Cabo San Lucas late 90's early 200's) He was an awesome musician and an incredible human being
You may want to check out the MV version of this song. This live version is great, but I feel the acoustics of the stage muted the sharpness and brightness of their overall sound.
If you're moving into Japanese Metal, and like some good, old fashioned Gibson shredding, give Ningen Isu a try. Pretty much anything on UA-cam is by them is good, but I first encountered them with Heartless Scat.
Hi Eric. Theo from Cape Town, South Africa here. I want to suggest a song that I am 100% sure that nobody suggested it the operatic metal band Molllust led by soprano Janika Groß (Janika Gross), The song to listen to is Voices of the Dead the full version.
Comparing Misa to Entwistle: awesome. I recommend the jazzy ballad WONDERLAND next, to experience yet another side of BAND-MAID. It’s arguably KAMANINCHO’s greatest composition/arrangement. Love Bob’s Burgers, too.
@@jeremydawkins8814 Don't worry, if we were on a quiz show & were being asked quick fire Q's about B-M for cash, we'd probably forget a lot of things we know :)
Jimmy Page didn't say that. What he said was he loved her drumming and the sound of her kit and asked how it was miked. There video of it. It was in Japan when they opened for G&R
You're right about Jimmy Page never comparing her to John Bonham, but way off about the details. According to Akane herself during an interview, he complemented her drumming and asked to take a photo with her, nothing to suggest he asked about the way her drums were miked. There is a photo of them standing next to each other, but there is no video of their meeting. Also, it wasn't when Band-Maid opened for Guns & Roses, in 2022, it was at a music awards show in Tokyo, in 2016.
I asked MISA if playing bass in a skirt was like playing in trousers only with one really wide leg. After she slapped me she said "Probably but don't ask silly questions in future".🤷♂️
I was going to ask MISA if playing barefoot is like playing with shoes on after you take them off. But I didn't want to risk it. Kudos for taking a risk, Gary! 😏
Violently Sexy… awesome addition to the Band Maid-centric lexicon! Great take regarding Akane, too. Love the band and these songs but this is a criminally bad mix. May as well blur Kanami’s image from the video as well, since you can barely hear her playing. Reminds me why I never watch this particular video. 😞
In regards the style of Kaname's guitar playing on "Different", in an interview that she did with Miku to promote the song (as it was to be released as a single), she explained her approach to composing the song. To paraphrase, she said that in regards to sound, she wanted a certain dissonance but also to make her guitar playing act as a 'vocalist' at times. Along with Misa here, and Miku doing some very interesting rhythm work, and of course Akane's percussion work, you have one of their best songs..in my opinion) ____ 🕊️ • °. _______ PO!

According to what Akane posted a couple of days after meeting Page, he told her (translating her Japanese), "Your playing was wonderful." The occasion wasn't a concert but an awards show, where Page was a presenter (to Jeff Beck) and B-M were awardees. The song B-M played was "Thrill".
@@otobokegaijin6218 Except we are talking about the Rock in Japan concert in 2017 where Jimmy and Akane posed for a picture together. You are obviously talking about another occasion.
@@sacluvsBM No no. The photo was taken at the "Classic Rock Roll of Honor Awards" show held in Tokyo Nov. 11, 2016---the first time it was held in Tokyo and the last time it was held at all. Akane posted about it with the photo the following Nov. 14. You're probably confusing this with an interview B-M had with Rockin'On in Aug. 2017 in which Akane talked about the photo.
@@otobokegaijin6218 That's what l am saying. The false story that Jimmy Page said Akane was the reincarnation of John Bonham started with the photo taken of Akane and Mr Page at Rock in Japan 2017. I was a fan on the homepage website back then and l read the story. It said as a caption to the photo of the two of them: Mr. Jimmy Page-san offered me many words of encouragement and I promised him l will do my best to live up to those kind words." -Akane.
You, sir, are a connoisseur of the fine wine these ladies serve us. Loved your reaction.
He is the gold standard for reaction/analysis for the Maids.
Band-Maid is one of the band that we must see them in live on stage in our lifetime. I hope they can make a tour in South East Asia soon
I love how you pick out those musical points and tell them.
Great video Eric !! Thanks for reacting to Band-Maid, your insight is awesome . We absolutely love this band !!🤘✌
Both, though different, were rocking.🤘😆🤘
check out BAND MAID - NO GOD
Nice reaction! I like how you showcase different things like the bass and drums in Dice and then your talking about Saiki's vocals in Different.
Hey Eric, I Still Seek Revenge is a great song. Hits you deep in the chest and one fan described it as "artillery "✌
It sounds just like rob zombie riff it's cool they have a old school sound and kick ass for chicks keep rocking love these gals
I have compared Misa to the late great John Entwistle but she is a way more beautiful version. ( I met John a few times around the pool at our condo in Cabo San Lucas late 90's early 200's) He was an awesome musician and an incredible human being
They are such fun and bad ass. I can see they touch your heart.
You have some great insights Eric
nice reaction eric well said especially to the gorilla on drums akane thanks thats true
i dont know about what was said, but i did see the picture. to me jb was the best, hands down, but akane up there in his shadow. great reaction eric
Thanks Eric!
ありがとうございます!
人の手で 行う演奏は やっぱりだけど 素晴らしいよね!。 (今の時代!クラッシックロックは新しい音楽だよね!! 最前線の、素晴らしい音楽だよ!ね!)
Really enjoying your take on things. “Manners/ Black Hole” would be a great next reaction.
I think the next Band-Maid reaction should "Freedom" live, Drum solo
Hi Eric. Theo from Cape Town, South Africa here. I want to suggest a song that I am 100% sure that nobody suggested it the operatic metal band Molllust led by soprano Janika Groß (Janika Gross), The song to listen to is Voices of the Dead the full version.
The PHX show will be a tough ticket. Smallest venue by far. Houston is the only venue west of the Mississippi with retail tickets remaining.
Comparing Misa to Entwistle: awesome.
I recommend the jazzy ballad WONDERLAND next, to experience yet another side of BAND-MAID. It’s arguably KAMANINCHO’s greatest composition/arrangement.
Love Bob’s Burgers, too.
All the D's DICE, DIFFERENT, DILEMMA, DAYDREAMING, DON'T YOU TELL ME, DON'T LET ME DOWN. Did I miss any.
Tbh i'm a little surprised you missed "Domination".😆 sub edit : Damn i forgot "Don't Apply The Brake" & "Decided By Myself" :)
@@GaryHolloway-810 Holy crap your right the most obvious one of the lot
I'm surprised myself now Panic didn't pick that up also.🤔😁😁
@@jeremydawkins8814 Don't worry, if we were on a quiz show & were being asked quick fire Q's about B-M for cash, we'd probably forget a lot of things we know :)
Don't Be Long! 😁
MISA MISA MISA! MISA MISA MISA!
Top notch.
One of my favourites!! God reaction! Please check out "No God"
I think they can be renamed " The Smiling Assassins "
No, Jimmy said Akane IS John Bonham. Or his latest incarnation. He's got that occult thing going...
And... this is why DJs needed engineers for the tech stuff kids lol. haha.
I asked MISA if playing bass in a skirt was like playing in trousers only with one really wide leg. After she slapped me she said "Probably but don't ask silly questions in future".🤷♂️
@P in D 2 HAHA. Thx Panic. It seemed like a legitimate question to me :)
I was going to ask MISA if playing barefoot is like playing with shoes on after you take them off. But I didn't want to risk it. Kudos for taking a risk, Gary! 😏
@@TomClark-Futoura Damn if i'd thought of your Q at the time i'd have asked her that as well, Tom. One slap was quite enough tho :)
After being slapped by Misa, I'm amazed you're still able to type!
I mean, I'd take a slap from MISA, pick and all.
🤘
Violently Sexy… awesome addition to the Band Maid-centric lexicon! Great take regarding Akane, too. Love the band and these songs but this is a criminally bad mix. May as well blur Kanami’s image from the video as well, since you can barely hear her playing. Reminds me why I never watch this particular video. 😞
"I'm gonna go with the one in all caps because they were yelling at me"
Moral of the story....yell at Eric. LOL
FWIW Sai-Key is correct.
That is why I hate the best in these magazines.
he cuts the bass solo..
also him: i hope you are picking up on what misa and akane are creating
me: ?
Different while i dont like it is a very Special Song its Punk and Prog Metal at the same Time 2 Genres that Logically shouldnt work. But they do.
_______ PO!
You SUPER should have done the MV for dice. As im sure was recommended- or should have been at least! And when doing concerts stick to the official lives only please. That isnt a very good recording of dice.
I agree, that recording is really muddy. Still super well played, but so much nuance got lost in translation!

This mix sucks so hard. Sometimes I think they don't want us to hear Kanami clearly, it's frustrating. The maids are wonderful as always.
sorry but as a Bass lover I adore this mix You can tell Me to crawl back into My Shell but I stand by it lol
@@DavidMISAMISAMISACook David, I would never. I'm glad you enjoy it!
