Эта песня уже давно считается народной, казачьей. Известна она с XIX века. Автор её унтер-офицер Невского пехотного полка Николай Веревкин, впервые она опубликовала в 1837 году. "Чёрный ворон" повествует о трудной судьбе воина и его борьбе со смертью, которая принимает образ чёрного ворона.
