It was originally offered to CBS, the pilot was pitched to the network hoped to be picked up for the Fall 1993 Season lineup during the 1993-1994 Season but CBS turned it down, FOX Broadcasting picked up the show and it premiered on April 5,1994 as a mid-season replacement airing Tuesdays after Roc but was cancelled after only ten episodes.

Not to be confused with the 1992 theatrical feature based on the same title.
The series "South Central" was one of the astounding short-lived shows that featured African-American characters in a positive light. The series was set in 1990's South Central Los Angeles and it was the setting for this remarkably hard-edged comedy/drama about a divorced, black single mother trying to raise her family in a tough and sometimes dangerous inner city neighborhood. Joan Mosley (Tina Lifford) was adjusting to working for the neighborhood grocery co-op after having been laid off from her high-paying administrative job. Not only did she have to struggle financially, but she was trying to raise her family and protect them from the violence around them. Her older son, Marcus, had been killed by neighborhood gang members. Joan is also a divorce widow who has two surviving children, Andre (Larenz Tate), is a lazy but well-meaning high school senior whose grades left much to be desired, not to mention common sense. His sister, Tasha (Tasha Scott),a diligent student who gets excellent grades and stays out of trouble has a tendency to tattle on her older brother, who normally gets into some sort of trouble.
Living with them in her small house was little Deion (Keith Mbulo), who was also Andre's little brother was a foster child who never spoke. Andre however, had become infatuated with Nicole (Maia Campbell), a sexy girl who worked part-time for Dr. Raymond McHenry (Kenneth Page), a physician friend of his mother's. However, Nicole was also a college student while working under Dr. McHenry. Although Nicole liked him they had difficulty getting together since her successful parents didn't want their daughter to date someone from the hood. Other cast members were Rashad (Lamont Bentley), who was Andre's best friend and also some of Andre's buddy from school. Sweets (Broadway and Tony award winning sensation the late Paula Kelly) was Joan's next door neighbor and best friend; Bobby (Clifton Powell), ran the co-op where Joan worked, and in late episodes was Joan's love interest. Other employees who worked at the co-op were Lucille (Jennifer Lopez) who was the Spanish-speaking cashier and also Mayo (Earl Billings) who was the stock clerk there. The series is the gloomy, but compellingly authentic counterpoint to NBC’s The Cosby Show, which at this point was the last major sitcom with predominantly African-American cast had ended its run 2 years earlier and painted a much different pictures with 2 parents, a doctor and a lawyer, raising their family comfortably in a massive brownstone.
At the time of its airing, South Central was praised by the critics for its realistic portrayal of life in the inner city, even if the language that was used was explicit in ways was stronger than they would have liked. This was a show the steered away from the stereotypical portrayal of blacks that were in a lot of those sitcoms that came out during the 1990's. These were real people with real problems and real situations. It was one of the sitcoms that FOX had in the 90's that were the shows to watch and its right up there with "Roc" as one of the best from the era. The show aired on Tuesday nights. Unfortunately, the series may have been too depressing to appeal to a mass audience which was a desperate campaign to keep this series on the air for another season, but was canceled after its initial short-lived run. The series was originally rejected to CBS, ended up and premiered as a 1993-94 mid-season replacement on FOX, producing 13 episodes from April 5, 1994 to June 7, 1994, with reruns until August 30, 1994. The series was under the creation of Michael J. Weithorn (the man who was also behind "Family Ties", The Pursuit of Happiness, True Colors, "Ned and Stacey","The Sinbad Show", and later on for "The King Of Queens"), who was also the executive producer of this series along with Ralph Farquhar (of Cheers, Married… with Children, Drexell’s Class, The Sinbad Show, The Proud Family, Real Husbands of Hollywood, "Moesha", and "The Parkers" fame) and his brother music composer Kurt Farquhar (of New Attitude, Drexell’s Class, The Royal Family, Roc, Rachel Gunn, R.N., Thea, The Sinbad Show, Sister, Sister, My Brother and Me, In the House, Ned and Stacey, Moesha, The Parkers, C Bear and Jamal, Smart Guy, Cousin Skeeter, The King of Queens (seasons 3-9), The Famous Jett Jackson, The Proud Family, One on One, All of Us, Girlfriends, The Game, Being Mary Jane, Black Lightning, and director Stan Lathan (Sanford & Son, Eight is Enough, Hill Street Blues, Amen, Roc, Martin, Moesha, The Parkers, The Steve Harvey Show, Cedric the Entertainer Presents, All of Us, The Soul Man, Real Husbands of Hollywood). 2 years later, Farqhuar’s new show Moesha appeared on television which dealt with many of the same issues, but in a much more traditional and sanitized way.
This series was also a career launch not only for Larenz Tate (who before this show was on another short-lived series from the early-90's "The Royal Family", with Redd Foxx, and after this would go on to make feature films like "Menace II Society", The Inkwell, Dead Presidents, Why Do Fools Fall in Love?, and "Love Jones", and the TV series Blue Bloods, Rush, House of Lies, and Game of Silence), but for Maia Campbell ("In The House"), the late Lamont Bentley ("Moesha"), and Tasha Scott ("Snoops", "The Parent Hood"). This show hasn't been since it aired more than 15 years ago.....it was rerun on TV One in 2009, and it needs to be brought back.

I agree, South Central was a movie that came out in 1992. South Central was a comedy originally offered to CBS but CBS turned it down, FOX picked it up and aired it as a mid-season in the Spring of 1994 but it lasted only a few episodes.

Rewatching this the Joan depended on Tasha so much to clean ,cook, watch deon the things she should have been doing as a parent and we’re people really ashamed of foodstamps back then ? I was a baby when this was on and now people getting all this stamps due to the pandemic/school shoottt people sweep left and right without no shame

Kids still in school use to be ashamed of foodstamps back than because they will get made fun of and use to be called poor. Now people brag about it . I was so shocked 😲 when I seen people posting about their food stamps online.

Food stamps definitely were not cool in my household in the 80s and 90s - simply because I was raised by my grandparents and that generation believe in earning your own way - I don’t look down on people who get stamps but I just rather go out and work than sit at the food stamp office and swipe that card in the store - might sound crazy now a days because of the way things have changed from generation to generation - old school i guess 🤷🏾‍♂️

I go on the wrong pathway I supposed you noo… Scratch that I know you would too life is a game we believe we can force change when mainly we just have to walk in to city hall and demand a audience and a voting reason a law to be changed and one to be removed a written statement and a documentation of change on paper in the law books and doctors office and litigations Public and private office and law and law enforcement the band must be broken in order to make a new one I guess I’m trying to say in I had a all green shirt and green pants and green shoes then I only seen myself green for that day but if I added Yellow socks and a yellow jacket then I seen two sides of myself that day if I added white laces and a white face cloth for sweating purposes and a bag pack backpack to have to carry items in not to just be beaten around the bush been there done that so if there is a enemy out there we know the truth who’s to be trusted back then to now yes we will folly and fall during trusting issues but the strength in whatever can change if done right it seems like we follow the rules so if the rules aren’t written for g if s they have joy in our days then we will No matter what government state or organization has to say Jesus died already and will be remembered always for his sacrifice for those that choose to remember him and his father and the disciples of them generations have past and have come again and again the Beacon to Wake up again has Sounded the lights are flashing the Alert of the Alarm the flow of road and time without Hate will return in my ignorance and in my intelligence throughout my life and your life A CHANGE WILL AND HAS COME AND WILL COME AGAIN INTACT IN OUR IGNORANCE AND IN OUR INTELLIGENCE EVERY INSECT GAS A ENEMIES RATHER THEY KNOW IT OR DONT KNOW IT A PREDATOR THAT STILL DOESNT MEAN ANY INJURY WILL HAPPEN BUT AS WE PRAY IN SPIRIT AND LIFE AND SOUL AND LIVE AND BREATHE AND EAT TO NURTURE AND NURISH SO WILL SOMEONE AND SOMETHING ELSE DIFFERENT FROM YOU OR EVEN THE SAME AS YOU NO IM NOT PREDICTING IGNORANCE JUST INTOLERANCE NO IM NOT SAYING DONT WAKE UP ANGRY OR HAPPY OR SAD OR BOASTFUL OR JOYLESS OR AFRAID OR ALONE OF LOVELESS OR LOVED THROUGHOUT THE DAY AND DAYS THE WEEK THE WEEKS THE MONTH THE MONTHS THE WEEKEND OR THE WEEKENDS THE YEAR OR YEARS AS TIME PASSES WE REFLECT HAPPINESS IN HEART BODY AND MIND AND SPIRIT WE KNOW THEY LISTEN BECAUSE WE DONT WE KNOW THEY UNDERSTAND BECAUSE WE DO BUT THE DIFFERENCE IS YOUR YOU AND TOU KNOW YOURSELF TO BE HONEST WITH YOURSELF IF YOU CANNOT BE HONEST WE ANYONE ELSE BE HONEST WITB YOUR PARENTS AND FAMILY FOR WHEN WE ARENT OUT OF THE FAMILY MINDSET WE WALK IN THE WORLD SHENANIGANS RATHER THE WORLD WIND ENJOY I LOVE YOU AS MUCH AS YOU LOVE YOURSELF AND MYSELF IF A SHIRT WAS DIRTY 25 YEARS AGO AND NO ONE CLEANED IT IS IT STILL DIRTY ? IF A SHIRT WAS WASHED 25 YEARS AGO AND NO ONE DIRTIED IT IS IT STILL CLEAN? We know dirt comes with time and water with Rain But if neater is Forming Then what washes the soil and what waters the seeds and what Quenches the Souls THURST IF THE SOIL BARES LESS FRUIT AND GREEN AND TREES THEN USUAL AND THE OXYGEN IN THE AIR HAS HEAVY WINDS TO BLOW AND LESS KITES IN THE SKY TO FLOW IN ITS WHENS AS THE BIRDS DO
