When I see modules lile these, I realize how little my setup actually is. This is amazing.

I noticed when I do such a planned arrangement in comparison to arrange the parts live-ish, my tracks become more "catchy”, but often also become in a way unexciting and dull.

Super interesting comment! Thanks for sharing. I kinda get what you mean. But that’s the “risk” creatively you take. Part of the uncertainty is that some parts turn out great but others not so much. I think it depends on how you plan to share the music.

Making my own samples, and using sampled packs from Spitfire, is invaluable to my process. I've recently picked-up their "The Stack" sample pack....it's brilliant.
Nikce work here...thanks for the video and sound demos.

I was hoping to see a comparison between the modules, but the sample that you used changed when you switched modules. Sadly that made it difficult to hear the differences.

Thanks for writing in. Hmm, if I’m understanding you correctly you wanted to know how the granular modules sounded different? If you’re meaning “tonally” there are slight differences since I do believe they have different signal paths/ AD/DA but I don’t know if that’s as significant as things like workflow and feature sets, which are significantly different and they result in significantly different outcome. At least in my experience. Hope that makes sense , but let me know if you have any other questions.

@@DUNGEONMUSICTHEATRE workflow and featureset, exactly. but there was not much on both aspects, compounded by some errors. like, Morphogene SQ: it has a pronounced noise floor, it's repitching algo is nowhere near the Nebulae, it has LESS control over the basic sample/loop functions (and 'morph' jams a few of those into one), and almost no control over the granular side, to be honest it's the least granular of those three by design - more of a tape rec machine emulation. Arbhar is the most focused granular module, comparable to Clouds, so it offers most controls. Nebulae is unique with its phase vocoder and separate speed/pitch control which provides the timestretching algo unrivalled in Eurorack. its granular engine and controls are midway between the other two, but it offers sound-on-sound recording like the M and live granularisation which none else does. it's so wrong to say it's straight up granular, it's just plain wrong! it's no competitor to Clouds/Beads at all. not to mention it can load CSound patches, but even its original state offers seamless mixing of the looper and the granular engines. so it's MUCH closer to the Morphagene for all intents and purposes - a tape recording machine with the granular on top, but it does all things better than the Morphagene. it does those things differently, giving you all the classic controls instead of preset-like multifunctional 'morph' or 'slide' but I dare you name one function the M has that N does not... ;)

The search for one's own sound is tricky but the idea of creating your own samples is the way forward I feel.
I have the Nebulae which I love connecting to rings and beads, this combo throws up some interesting and atmospheric sounds.
Thankyou for the fantastic, inspiring and informative video, please keep it coming.

I was getting a strong Woodkid vibe today. I really enjoyed it. Thank you for the comparison. I keep putting off buying granular because I can never decide which one. I know, I need to get them all.

That’s exactly what I just learned for myself after watching this amazing thoughtful video! I have the Morphagene and will add the Arbhar and the Bitbox, but now I definitely will add the Nebulae as well. I really do appreciate his views about „the orchestra“. And that describes the musical setting very accurately for me.

Hey man .. nice approach, and process, here. Taking your duduk into your system, is inspiring, to see. I've got a Bitbox Micro & MI Beads, that I would like to explore, in a like fashion, taking sample audio clips from my D-50 synth. That's the theory, anyway.
The thing that maybe is worth managing, for me, .. is the collection of raw audio storage, from various synth presets, .. and run them through Beads, and hopefully get nice results, like you've done. Hmm, .. probably keep the raw/initial synth, on the computer, in it's own folder, naming it after the synth patch, probably .. and then any successful Beads "massages" going into sub folders, of the raw synth audio folder, .. or something, that serves better .. with the final outcomes, going to Bitbox. This method, will have the source audio, to go back to, if need be.
Yeah, at the first .. the granular editing .. that was the original attraction for me, to this kind of equipment.

Simiarly, I’ve found the file management on these modules to be the least liked thing about these FANTASTIC modules (nebulae and morphagene, don’t have the arbhar). Morphagene- I’ve used the reel file/sd card which works well. You can add and delete from it quite easily, however remembering what is saved and the button combos can be a hinderance. The Nebulae usb stick also works well, however though you can save to it, you can’t delete off the usb stick. There are a few other management hurdles to deal with but that all pends your specific workflow. Currently just using ableton to play and manage the sample files, sending them to these modules for recording via their own audio interface output (often leaving that cable connection as is). So far finding this more pleasurable. I would imagine any granular module that saves samples is going to have a limited and quite possibly convoluted file management process.

@@brianreilly6545 Yes Brian, thanks for commenting. And, as you aware, I believe .. is that I have yet to exercise this idea(s). There is another feature, that I should have mentioned, too .. which I already do, is taking photos, of the module arrangements, IF I've got a keeper going. Who knows though, .. perhaps as a person gets more familiar with the different modules .. photos will lessen in importance?
I do tend to store screenshots, photos, & audio files, probably more than most people. .. :)

With those drums, what about running the drum samples through a vca and using velocity to vary the vca output? Or does the drum sample have velocity layers and you can create a bank of the drum samples with the different velocity layers then play them however in a module.

    • @DUNGEONMUSICTHEATRE
      @DUNGEONMUSICTHEATRE  2 роки тому +1

The micro bitbox can have velocity layers but there’s probably a workaround in the normal bitbox. And yeah you could even have the percussion sent to an envelope follower to trigger other samples or modules like tailko analog drum machines and have them interact? Fun stuff to try for sure!!
