HR is absolutely not the place to go and complain. All HR does is kick the issue back to management, knowing full well that they are the problem. HR is not there to protect the employee, the corporation's reputation or anything else, but SENIOR management. HR will fight to the last man and the last dollar to protect management.

HR is one of the 3 places thru which a company may be controlled, so hatchet men concentrate on taking it over or at least neutralizing it. If urs does nothing that means it's already been corrupted. If u get the chance, read a piece titled The hatchet Man's Playbook. It talks about that very thing.

If someone criticizes you and not the others, and you brand new, complain. Right away. It will works. If you wait, it will just get worse, and then eventually if you complain, you may not be believed, because it does take time for the bully to set the groundwork up to make you look bad. So complain right away.

Thank you so much for this video, I am currently going through this, Because I stand out, go to work clock in and out do my job, and don't make friends at my job they decided to target me, I'm coming from a great location to another location where no one is organized, And the boss is friends with the rest of the employees, like I said I come in do my job and go home, when I say everyday he finds something to complain about that's exactly what I mean, my job is done but he finds other things small things to think about, I always stand tall with him, Speak my mind and make sure he knows I know my policy and he hates that, I have never been through anything in my life like this at a job, I am putting in my two weeks notice for my sake and go back to where I know I belong.. Never again, He knows I won't take his shit,The environment that I am at is terrible

Thank you for your details on the "Insecure Boss" type, and how that personality trait often turns into bullying and targeting. Your bulleted examples of this behavior is a great help! For "live, and let live" type employees, (such as myself,) in my experience, there is a high level of misplaced trust, understanding and latitude for their position and challenges, or just a naivety. I have been blindsided by these toxic people often in the past. It is great that you acknowledge how toxic bosses position themselves in a protected, powerful bubble- even if only for the targeted employee. For example- the "idea man" and one responsible for your success through an undefined path based solely on their opinion.

And every time it's a chance to apply for a new position they hide it from me they make the hiring top secret. Finally I email my boss asking why he undermine my qualifications and abilities to promote me? His answer was I need you where you are now. OMG WHAT CAN I DO?

They are playing games with you. They do not want you in another position which means they do not really appreciate you. The company is using condescending remarks and fake praise to keep you in your current position. Either confront them with the situation or start looking for something else. They are using you.

Great discussion, but I have to say your chances of making any sort of successful action against such a boss are close to zero. Bosses have absolute power in most places. HR is there to back them up, if they really mess up and hit you, for instance, you'll be escorted out to HR on the spot, and threatened with retaliation if you press charges. HR is there to get you to sign something that you'll not press charges, and if you don't, they'll say "we can ruin your chances of getting another job."

    • @msajfar

Moraine LAKE There are definitely ways. The best approach is the approach of positive intentions. This is going to your manager and saying "I really enjoy my work and you are a great leader in so many ways. However, there are a few things about your leadership style that I haven't fully figured out and I want us to have a great working relationship. Very often I can tell you get frustrated with me and I would like to understand what I can do to help reduce your frustration." To be honest, with a bully boss you very likely aren't the issue, but this is a way of stroking the bully boss ego while positively bringing the issue to light. If this doesn't work, then you take the next step. Go to HR with this conversation. "I really love my job and the company and I want some advice on how to have a better relationship with my manager." This shows you are there looking for a solution, not just being a tattle-tale trying to get someone in trouble. In the meantime, be a top performer. Go out of your way for additional work and do a great job at it. Make yourself as indispensable as possible. Network with people who are highly valued so you can develop a relationship with powerful allies. I have worked for more than one of these bosses. Each time, I survived, they did not.

That's why in all cases, its better to move on. Do not trust HR. They are not there to protect you and don't care about you. HR are snakes and they will protect management no matter what. Just move on and let nature take its course. There is ALWAYS a price to pay.

Yet what she didn't know there would be more to the job that meant the eye and she can't seem to cope, she thinks by turning into a raging lunatic she gets some sort of an adrenaline rush. It's disturbing shit.

Bullies can only be dealt with one way - Punch them in the nose. The rest is lip service and all of your actions and reactions will be used against you. So man up. If you have a Bully Boss - the moment you find out / go straight to HR. Don't sit and drag yourself through hell for money and career - because dealing with a Bully always ends one way - badly. Just suck it up now, make a fantastic HR Claim with plenty of evidence, witnesses, and testimony. Then let them fire you if that's what they want. Let your next employer know you were fired because you reported a bully and you don't ever want to work in an abusive environment.
Believe me, you will make the world a better place!!
    Have courage and best wishes.

Good video. I had a bully boss at my old company. Unfortunately most companies are non-union. If you are in a union, talk to your rep immediately. My old boss constantly pulled me into his cubicle for "coaching" and "performance management". Wrote me up for this and that. Never had any issues with prior supervisors in the organization. Got pulled into HR with absurd write ups. Finally stated in that meeting that I felt he was a bully in front of HR manager and that I wasn't signing any write ups and that I might be speaking with an employment attorney. It continued. I finally filed a complaint with the EEOC on the advice of counsel. At that point my boss was "reassigned" to another department. I had asked for a different supervisor and had been rebuffed. The fact these people get into management to begin with is sad. I have to say I have had many wonderful managers over the years as well.

I think a lot of the times, the boss is bipolar. No kidding. This is a real as can can be. I find that the only way to deal with them is to diffuse the situation as quickly as possible. The more it drags out, the more irate they get. Just say "I will do that way." or whatever. If nothing else works, just politely tell them you must leave and you will work on it.
Sadly, there is nothing you can do to win a battle with this type of boss, and there is no justice. The system is stacked against you.

(5:48) that proverb placed there makes no sense. If the boss felt superior to the employee in abilities, what makes him "vicious"? She is claiming that sometimes the boss is brilliant, so becomes impatient with incompetent workers...that's silly coz they probably wouldn't have been hired in the 1st place. Usually the boss is the one who isn't that bright but did make some good past decisions or connections that led him to his good position but he may be a creature of habit, so doesn't realize there are other ways to handle an issue so would feel threatened if a "peon" could resolve the crisis he was facing. Wish they would cover on how to handle this issue with wisdom or what to say to prospective employer when looking for another job since it is considered wrong to bad talk about last job. can you get away with saying reason for leaving was , "personal reasons"? I think it's none of their business, obviously you weren't happy...they should instead ask what would make you want to leave a job rather than almost get you to confess about a specific employer. Since most states are "At will" employees (meaning they could be let go for any reason or no reason, then if you are separated from a job, you should be able to chose to give a reason or prefer to not answer.

uncomfortable with intelligent employees who feel free to speak their minds.
    Do not like new ideas.
    Make veiled or unveiled threats.
Constantly keeping tabs - calling frequently, accusatory overtones.
relentless - nothing you say is right, then when you try to stand up for yourself, mildly, they CRY to HR and make you look bad.
Condescending - judging, labeling, tension among everyone on the team.

Bullying is just weak management. It's basically cutting corners by using intimidation. Either they want you to leave or they want you to do what they want when they want (a puppet). They can't tell you what you need to do in an objective manner, so it's all YOUR fault. Management is giving employees clear objectives and then finding out what the development needs are. That can be done without bullying.

Take action against workplace bullying. Management will not solve this problem. They are the problem. Politicians and lawmakers have to take action. Canvas them. There are petitions available through the internet. Find live petitions against workplace bullying and sign them. Alternatively submit your own petition.

I am working in a situation like this. I have complained and she seems to knit pick about my work and nothing ever seems to be good enough i always felt like this is a tactic to make the employee feel belittled like they can't do the job plus one day she is alright the next day she rolling her eyes and has negative body language towards me and she has been there for 25yrs they know her behavior they won't do anything about it and others follow along with her.

HR will always protect management, they don't care aboutmost people, and once its gone the HR route, they will try to find a way to turn it back on you. If you can afford to, just leave once your paycheck hits your bank account or in the mean time find another job and get on with your life. The bullies you leave behind will eventually destroy each other.

As I watched the video, I could not believe someone knew what I am going through on a daily bases. The only thing I did not hear is what happens when you think the employer or executive may be promoting the bully boss (BB) behavior. I have tried to address my issues with the BB with the executive only to have her claim she supervised the BB to act in the ways she does. I felt the executive had something against me personally. I have been in this situation for 8 years because of family.

It May cost you your job, but stand up for ourself, announce out loud to your co-workers what is happening. Call the bully out and tell them to flack off, and go to the top and expect management to step in. But document everything. Forget the union rep, they will not help. But face t, when that starts, it is time to go you are in a hostile environment.

I am experiencing a bully boss. It took me a long time to realize it was happening. I looked in the mirror and realized I took awful. Huge bags under my eyes and I dread going to work. The hour before work if my boss has been in a bad mood, I feel like I might have an anxiety attack. I worked with the newest girl this week and it was hard to do both our jobs because she isn't fully trained. A had a customer being rude so I stepped in and stood up for my coworker. Firmly telling the customer to wait while we investigate her situation. The customers complained about me and my boss didn't say hi to me my next shift. Then when I got the schedule, she cut my hours.

The question is what does the organization reward? In other words, what behavior is approved by the company culture. If your company rewards aggressive managment tactics, political games and sabotage then your issue is to recognize that. Look at it objectively. Sometimes companies have a lot of window dressing around this, like "be a team player" "act like an owner" etc. Your job is to see if in fact these behaviors are rewarded. If they are not there is very little you can do, except leave.
