I ran into this idea while trying to figure out why I couldn't stay at one company for more than 18 months. I eventually realized that I started with a company based on a narrative of personal benefit or relevance. That narrative naturally frayed at the edges as time progressed. A new narrative was needed to keep my interest in working. However, since I didn't understand what was happening in my head, I only knew to use the brute force method of switching employers. By understanding this dynamic in myself, I was able to verbalize my situation with my self, spouse and employer. This provided several avenues for better solutions.
Thanks for sharing- that's actually really profound and under-emphasized. Narrative is the unspoken force that draws people toward certain companies and careers yet it doesn't seem to be acknowledged...
Thank you for such an honest dialog. I noticed a while ago that "peer review" as it stands is basically bullshit. It is a huge flaw in our sciencetific method.
"tell your own version of this story" I remember a story about some american businessmen who were frustrated by a meeting with chinese businessmen. The chinese invited the visitors to an elaborate dinner and peppered them with questions about topics **seemingly unrelated** to their business interests. The americans wanted to "get to the point" and "talk dollars and cents". What they didn't realize is that it is often more accurate to slowly and carefully define what something is "not" instead of trying to dive directly into what something "is". The chinese businessmen thought the americans were hopelessly childish and naive, and the americans thought their hosts were being intentionally obtuse as part of some specific strategy to "throw them off their game". the apophatic phaneron.
