For Denken, he knows when he’s outclassed, but he also understands that he’ll never truly know the gap without giving it a try and finding out. So in a situation where both combatants are adamant about not killing one another, why not test your mettle against someone better.
Denkens technique would normally be super effective The fire storm requires a full mana barrier for a long period of time to not die to, and Frieren said earlier full barriers use HUGE amounts of mana, so any normal mage would exhaust their mana IOT to survive it if they could, then the light spears spell would shred them Its just that Freiren has a) an unnatural amount of mana to all upon b) has that mana supressed so you can't judge it during the fight
Denken's fire tornado was pretty smart. Wind to make it hard to fly, fire to force her to hold a full barrier for like 30 seconds which is insanely mana-hungry. Pretty much anyone but Frieren or maybe a handful of others would've been OOM after that. His numbers just weren't high enough. Also, he gave those demoralized guys a fair fight. Could've ambushed them instead.
It actually reminds me of when Aladdin (Magi) used the same spell during his evaluation exam. I think Frieren's mangaka took inspiration from that since Magi is one of the OG Magic Manga/Anime.
I think Himmel was so legendary his reputation kinda eclipsed the other members of the party. Most people probably think he carried his whole team hahaha

It's more of the fact that almost 80 years has past since the demon king was defeated and only a few humans are alive from that time. You might know her name but you never saw how powerfull she was and a good example is for example zoltrak which was regarded as a powerfull spell while the demon king was alive and 80 years later it's classified as ordinary magic. So they either don't recognize her because of their age or underestimate her because of the development of magic without regarding that she as well is growing stronger over time and developing with the advancements of magic.

The first moon landing was like, nearly 60 years ago, and I bet the vast majority of people can't even remember or know anyone else on the mission other than Neil Armstrong. Now in this one it was even longer, 80 years since the party of heroes. Considering how the majority of statues are all Himmel, it's understandable that barely anyone can even recognize Frieren.

The names in this show amuse me. They're all German. Denken means "to think". And that old big-brain thinker just figured out the best way to get what he wants is by throwing hands. And it worked, so really he's still smart. Now for the rest: Frieren means freeze, Fern means far away, Stark means strong, Sein means "to be", Himmel means heaven, Laufen (girl from Denken's party) means walking (probably a reference to her long-distance teleportation magic), Richter means aimer but probably refers to the German scientist who invented the scale with which we measure earthquakes.

Fun fact: when Frieren is casting the spell that breaks the shield, there's an impact frame in which everything turns white, except for the silhouette of an elf, but curiously enough, the elf shown is Serie instead Frieren.
To add to that also has a green impact border with a white outline that shows younger frieren, that literally is like milliseconds after the serie frame, meaning unless you slow it down completely, you would miss both of them
Honestly it’s reasonable for Denken’s group to go after other teams to get a stille. Catching one yourself is almost completely based on luck. As was mentioned previously the round of the exam is pretty much a battle disguised as a challenge. It’s expected that some teams would luck out and catch a stille and the other teams would then fight to get them.
The funny thing is that technically Laufen is the only person in the entire exam who could catch up to a Stille. Their luck is just so bad they never even encountered one.

I thought it was interesting how two times in this episode, they emphasized that spells are a product of imagination, and if you can't imagine it, you can't cast it, and Flamme told Serie that she and her can't defeat the Demon King because they can't imagine a world without conflict.

I was so proud of denken after they got beaten by frieren, like dude did not give up, and stayed pretty focused on the objective, AND got it (I mean for sure.) I really like his character, I didn’t think I would, but I do, he’s very smart and quite nice overall

She didn't need to do it to win the test (she could have just stomped Richter herself before he could blink). She wasn't trying to send Serie a message, even if Serie seemed to think so. Frieren's view of magic as being about the journey, not the destination, means that Serie, who is all destination and no journey when it comes to magic, is 100% irrelevant to Frieren. She may as well not exist. Which is why Frieren is the only mage who could even imagine breaking Serie's barrier, and because magic can only do things you can imagine, Frieren is the only one who could break it for real. Not just because she's smart and powerful, but because her worldview is fundamentally disconnected from Serie's.

I like Denken's whole group honestly. I find it heart warming that Laufen knew that Denken wasnt going to be killed but Frieren would've hurt him anyways and thats why she went there to be caught so that he'd stop getting hurt. And I like Richter's whole demeanor. He's confident in his abilities and so he comes off as arrogant but even so I like the guy anyway. Denken is my favorite of the bunch but the rest of them deserve some love too. Im looking forward to seeing more of them.
