  • A departure from all the modern stuff. This is pure old school technology at its best. Just pure poetry in motion and still capable of a days work, not bad for 80 years old!

George , this takes me back to when I left school and started work on a local farm in the early 60s , our binder was all driven by that big land wheel, no pto , great times .

Well George, you know the old saying if it isn’t broke don’t fix it well that’s most certainly what we have here and anyway if the taller wheat storks are going for thatching roofs then I think it’s better that this 80 year old machine cuts the the wheat crop, so then the thatchers have an excellent quality product to use when they are thatching roofs with and until next time George, TaRa for a bit.

Saw an old black & white movie about the olden days of farming in the Soviet Union a few months ago and they had these huge fields with a fleet of those harvesters and hundreds of people in the fields gathering the bundles up and stacking them on wagons being pulled by a team of horses. Amazing to watch!

A brilliant video George, nothing wrong with a bit of the old stuff. There can’t be many binders about that have been filmed with a drone!! Excellent filming and some wonderful still photos of the sheaves in the field. I like it 👍👏

Absolutely beautiful video George. A lot of those binders were ground driven by the single metal wheel. My father had a PTO driven Massey Harris binder. I worked it as a kid. A neighbour had a PTO driven Bisset binder.

Last time I saw one of those working was 50yrs ago when I was a boy (I think it was entirely ground drive). You should have included a bit of footage of it being setup for road transport George. That’s an art form all in itself. 👍

Ye Gods, I worked behind one when I was about fourteen years old, it was even older than that as it had been changed from horse drawn to a tractor draw bar and it was driven by a land wheel. Thanks George for bringing back some happy memories,

I used to get the call to help out on threshing days on one local farm until my late teens. Definitely a bit of nostalgia there , however I also remember how dusty it was and how the chaff got everywhere. A hot bath was much needed at the end of the day.

  • @sionmurtha917

Brilliant video, my grandfather had an Albion PTO binder, said it was far superior to anything else at the time. But, time moved on, and in the 60’s getting a contractor in with a matador meant less work, and virtually no losses to rats between harvest and threshing time. But down the road with his binder, went the building of the corn stacks, thatching them and the need for so many men.

The Albon binder, theres a good chance that machine was made in the next town to me. Harrison McGregor and Guest of Leigh Lancashire, which was swallowed up by David Brown later to become Case under the Tenneco label. All gone now theres a shopping centre where the old factory stood. ......... sound like a right old guy........ maybe because I am!!

Fantastic bit of kit, back in 2007 and 08 I helped run a threashing machine at a few steam shows, one we did was a three day show and we ran out of sheaves on the first day, the farmer let us go and cut as much as we wanted that evening, we was out for the best part of 4 hours cutting with the binder and a fordson n on the front, we set them in to stooks over night and picked them up early next morning with a allis and flat trailer, great fun
