I had a book hoarding problem. We still have a ton at home but since I’m childfree almost all of my old children’s books went to my nephews (3 massive cartons). Something had to change and I went the ebook route, but borrowing from local libraries. Also some libraries in the US allow you to have a non-resident membership which you pay a small annual fee for. Saved me a small fortune.
For those non-US based who do want to read library ebooks on an ereader, go for Pocketbook, Kobo, or an android one instead of a Kindle.

I just re-read The Hunger Games, for the first time as an adult. I read them for the first time when I was 13 and haven't read them since I was probably 14 or so, I'll be 23 in April and oh my gods they're just so amazing, as a child I loved the love story mostly, and the characters, but now I have such a deeper appreciation for the plot, now I understand the themes of Captilism and oppression and corrupt governments, etc. I also far better understand my own trauma (and unfortunately have been through a lot more in the last 10 years) so book 3 was so much more enjoyable now then when I was a child, and I found it kind of frightening. I could understand and relate to Katniss' trauma, how she initially didnt want kids because she didn't want to bring kids into that messed up world, I way better understood her depression, and Haymitch's alcoholism and the reason he can be so nasty and snarky, he and Katniss and Peeta are so so fucking traumatized.
I also read the prequel to The Hunger Games, A Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, which I 10/10 recommend, I finished it a few weeks ago and I CANNOT stop thinking about it!

I had basically the same experience. Re-read the books during quarantine, having only read the once when I was a teenager. I agree with everything, the plot was still interesting even if you knew what was going to happen, the characters have so much depth to them, the family trauma, the social and political criticism ahhhhhhhhhh I need to read a Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes. Every review I've read until now has been negative, you're the first person I see saying good things, but that'll be enough for me, fingers crossed

Also got a ton of recommendations for books from your video which is great. I really would like to get back into physically reading, I've found myself using Audible way too often just because its easier and I can do it more often, but you can't beat just sitting down and reading. Loved the video and the cover for Glass Houses is so beautiful! For the new year, I set myself two goals about books. One was to use the library finally, so I can save money. The other was to finally donate the books I don't need on my shelves because I either didn't like them that much or because I am not interested in reading them anymore. I collected a lot of books these last few years, so it's finally time to say goodbye to some. I can proudly say that I've been going to the library 3 times already and every time I donate a couple of books to them because they sell them on and the money goes to the organization that brings books from the library to people who can't come to the library. My shelves have slowly more space. And another plus, I've been reading a lot more since using the library because I can finally read comics and mangas which were too expensive for me to get!

I read Men Who Hate Women by Laura Bates last year and would really recommend that for anyone wondering about Jordan Peterson. He’s heavily tied with male violence and the incel community, and often uses his qualifications as scapegoats to say awful things, usually about women. Definitely not demonising anyone who enjoys his writing, but always good to be aware :)

Coleen Hoover's "it ends with us" blew my mind. I was really invested, it had some spicy sexy scenes. But most importantly I think it really highlighted certain type of relational situation very well, and it proper made me think about self-worth and co-dependence and addressing boundaries for what you can and cannot handle.
I know a lot of people are absolutely ravind about it now, but I honestly think it is up there in my top 3 best books I have ever read when it comes to fiction.

One of my all-time, top 5 favorites is The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society. It's set in post-WWII Britain with flashbacks to the war. The protagonist is a book lover and lifelong writer aching to write something meaningful. She strikes up a friendship by correspondence with a whole group of people living on Guernsey Island and learns about their incredible experiences as the channel islands had to be abandoned to Germany during the war. Based in reality, it's heartwarming, heartwrenching, and brilliantly written entirely through letters. They turned it into a movie as best they could (hard to do given the epistolary nature of the book), so the book is miles better... but perhaps it's the perfect "cottage read" as you set up house! :)

I'll admit that I'm not minimalistic at all, but I don't collect many things. Every now and then I get rid of some clothes, make-up, stationary, cheap jewelry... But I am however a book collector! My dream is to have a wall full of books, preferably the wall in a living room where the tv usually sits. I'll leave a tiny shelve for a tv :p
I can't even get rid of any of my YA books, even though I didn't even finish some of the longer series. I don't even want kids, but I'll happily play the librarian for kids in the neighbourhood xD

It’s been part of my motivation to get done with the studies I guess (to take short breaks and dream of all amazing books I could have available to me if I finish). The video is a good reminder that you don’t need to own every book in physical form that you want to read. Kindle seems like a lovely way to do it too and the library is also a winner too if you want to have less clutter at home. / Scandinavian

Gameboard of the Gods by Richelle Mead (which was in the top of the box with Amy Schumer's book at the beginning of the video), and Darkfever by Karen Marie Moning (one of my fave writers, you held it up at 39:35 ). 27:31 This is so relatable! I will often mess up in English because it’s not my first language (I guess it’s just a process I need to keep up with in order to evolve in that area) . I just don’t get it when people use only one language and they don’t have dyslexia or any impairment, but they still insist on butching their own language due to not caring enough or making mistakes they didn’t need to make if they had picked up books a few times in a year. In English you write the words separately, and in swedish we write words together or else the sentence will get a whole new meaning. (Lol, this is something I used to struggle with lots in middle school ”whole/hole” and ”there/their/they’re” and also ”dear/deer/there” it wasn’t until I started reading in English such as ”Matilda” and understood the context it fell into place, when to use what in English.)
I can accept lowercase letters as a statement like bell hooks did for example (otherwise it’s 27:34). For those who haven’t read their book ”All about love” I highly recommend it.

One thing that helped me to start reading much more was getting rid of Twitter … attention can be so easily pulled away from books thanks to these devices! The Sound of Stars is absolutely amazing. It's a YA alien-invasion novel but it's so genuinely sweet and lovely. Basically two teenagers bond over loving books and music and end up on a road trip to save the world. (It also alerted me to the fact that I now read YA and view the characters as children, which is so weird because in middle school I thought 16 was so old and mature).

I am thinking of starting Patreon (where I could totally do this!) - so I can cut back on sponsorships, I took a break while moving as I knew it would just be impossible for a few weeks, what with my husband’s job (he’s away days at a time so I have the little man totally to myself & I couldn’t juggle that with planning/editing etc) & we have had so much on with the new house (workers in and out) + wedding re-planning … anyway I’ve found myself SO much more relaxed just focusing on posting content and not constantly planning everything around whatever sponsors are in the pipeline! As I did so many sponsorships last year I just burned out and became bored of UA-cam but now I’m loving it again! Anyway with Patreon, it would be a cool replacement for at least one monthly brand deal, my creator friends keep encouraging me to start it and to have a private podcast with Thomas on there for Patreons/a mammy group/a book club/a film club/do live chats! It’s something I’m strongly considering for when I have my office renovated ☺️🥰 xxxxxx

Hi Melanie, thank you for replying,it made my day, week, month, year🥰 . I felt so guilty and greedy even suggesting a book club. But being a Primary school teacher I am a huge advocate for books and reading, so this video was definitely right up my alley. I feel grateful for the fact that you even replied because I know you are a busy with your beautiful boy and your hubby is away at work. Also, a new home and future wedding would be lots of work. I am pleased to hear you are back on UA-cam and feeling relaxed, that Patreon option sounds like a great idea. Just do what you can, we all understand. I have been a follower of yours for many years and have watched and revisited your videos numerous times. I have loved seeing yourjourney unfold and am so happy that you have found a lovely hubby and now you are a mummy to a beautiful boy. So happy for you and Thomas and now you have found your forever home, a place to raise your family. Recently, I have made a vision board, like the one you suggested awhile back, and it's helped me focus on what my heart desires and to follow my dreams, especially around health and wellness. It's so easy to compare yourself to others but I love your message- everyone's journey is different and unique and self-care is important.Melanie, you are my number one youtuber and author-how exciting! As I type I am feeling a bit worried and I hope that you understand where I am coming from, my heart. You write so eloquently and you're very articulate so I hope I don't sound clumsy but there's so much I want to say🙂 . Thank you for your genuinity and truly loving your online community. I wish you all the best in this journey we call life. With everything that has been going on the world it's so good to be able to enjoy the simple things in life. I thought that I was the only one, but through your content I realise that, fortunately, I was wrong. All the best sweetie. P.S Are you still publishing 'Me Time Journals?' Loved mine. I will re-read 'If Only'(which I love) and before 'Glass Houses' is released, may need to order from Booktopia, sorry I thought I was doing the right thing by purchasing on kindle. I look forward to seeing your new office too. Lots of love from the Land Down Under💕 Priscilla

I also can't stand the dust jackets on hardcover books! We just bought a house as well and when I unpacked my books I got rid of all the jackets and it felt so sacrilegious, but they are so much easier to hold and look so pretty on the shelf now.

I felt the exact same about Queenie! As soon as I seen it next on the pile I was hoping the footage wouldn't be cut! It's such a good book. My fave John Green book is turtles all the way down. Very relatable for a mentally ill young adult. I think I read it when I was about 19. Juno Dawson is probably one of my fave writers! I loved clean. You should look into meat Market by her. I was absolutely hooked on it. Ahh I could go on for paragraphs about books but I'll leave it there for now haha.

I loved Darren Shan. When I was a teen, I bunked class so I could hide on the top floor in our library (paranormal, fantasy section) and just devour the series. Unfortunately, they didn't have the last two books. It took a half a year before I was able to get my hands on the final two from my new school.
That ending though...Still mad about the last book - I understand what he was trying to do, but it just made me feel like I wasted my time with the series since it all came to nothing.
