Before my partner died in summer 2022 we would travel to visit his sister and her husband who lived in central Frankfurt several times a year - sometimes we were just going to visit them, other times en route to other destinations in France often ending up in Provence. We always took the DFDS ferry from Dover to Dunkirk. A very nice crossing that gives you time to unwind before the onward journey. Often we would stop overnight in St. Omer. A small town with a very nice square and a good selection of places to eat. There are many hotels to suit all budgets and all are central so it only takes a few minutes to get right to the centre. I can recommend the restaurant Le Cygne if you go there. The town is well placed for your onward journey to Düsseldorf.
We did go on the autobahn when needed but usually avoided it, preferring to meander through France and Belgium before crossing the border into Germany - although on the opposite side to you.
The beach at Dunkirk was indeed an evacuation beach. If you watch the film Dunkirk you will get a flavour of how awful the situation was. On the subject of the sticker for the green zones it is likely you would get fined for non-display - I remember receiving a confirmation e-mail with a facsimile of the sticker when I applied for ours so whether you could affix this I don't know. There are very strict instructions on where to affix the sticker on your windscreen. There is a green zone app for your phone.
After my partner died in 2022 I visited his brother-in-law in Frankfurt, his sister having also died. I didn't drive, I took the Eurostar to Brussels and the ICE to Frankfurt. It was expensive. Shops in and around the 2 railway stations were open on Sundays and so was the supermarket REVE. Most people used cash in the smaller shops but cards were widely used in larger stores and restaurants. I had no trouble at ATM machines getting cash with a visa debit card.
As you are interested in history I recommend you g to Normandy to see the landing beaches. I would do the short crossing then drive via Honfleur - many reasonably priced hotels there and it is a lovely place with dozens of restaurants dotted around the harbour. You can then drive to the beaches from there. I would recommend that you rent a fire near the beaches and give yourself some time to travel around the area. I am a retired French Teacher and took many school trips to Belgium and France. We also did the cemeteries of the first world war around Ypres and took part in the ceremony at the Menin gate which takes place every day at 8pm.
Watching your vlogs brought back happy memories. We always had separate quilts on our super King bed. I still do even though I am now on my own.

Just catching up with your vlogs after our similar trip (we only went as far as the Netherlands). The services as soon as you cross the Dutch border were great (fast EV chargers, Maccy D's and clean loos - although you still have to pay 0.80) 😁

You don’t mind paying when they are clean do you?
Hope you had a lovely trip x

In 1986, I lived in an attic apartment in Zwei Brucken. I really loved being there. I loved the town plaza, which always had strings of white lights outlining the buildings in town even if it wasn't Christmas time. The restaurants were really nice, and I loved the one that in May had a May pole hanging at an angle from the upper side of the restaurant wall overlooking the street. One restaurant in particular that I and my friends loved was one that had survived the WWII bombings! You had to walk down about 4 steps to get to the original street level where the restaurant still stood. Near my apartment was where they kept the Lipizzaner horses, and they gave riding lessons! I wanted to take the lessons, but they were held on Saturday mornings and my finance always called me in early mornings from Washington State in the US. So, despite wanting to ride the horses, I really wanted to talk to my finance. This was before cell phones. His cost was several hundred dollars per each phone call! He called every Saturday morning! He came to visit me, and we took a bus tour into Belgium. It was beautiful and lovely with lots of snow. I have wonderful memories of Germany.

The road conditions looked horrible but the views looked nice. Cannot wait for more of your trip. Just curious is it Kirsten and Joerg's channel that you watch? I watch them too.
