I usually tend to prefer aluminum and maple snares because it was that “boring “ tone that blends well with songs. For drum solos, brass, birch and other odd materials are good

If I was there, I would have probably gone for the 14x6" USA Black Brass. I've become a big fan of middling sized brass snares lately - imo they're the most versatile snares around and have incredible tone. I know the Keith Carlock snare has a similar spec and that's a great sounding drum.
