Awesome images. I read through some of the comments and your responses. I really appreciate the honest and pleasant answers. I’ve been thinking of getting a macro lens for a while now. Thanks for the great comment Sean! It’s kind of difficult to make bad images with this lens! 🙂 The Sigma is definitely a very good alternative to the more expensive Sony 90mm Macro. The Voigtlander 110 Macro is also worth a look at. I’ve not tied it personally but it gets good reviews. It’s manual focus only though. All the best, Tim

As beginner to photography I would like to ask what mode would you use on every day basics while doing macro photography? Manual or aparature priority? I personally shoot everything in manual mode but macro photography is new to me so I wonder if aparature priority is the way to go with macro?
I’d personally go with manual for macro. If you shoot aperture priority you risk the shutter speed being too low. I’d normally be shooting at 1/1000 or faster if outdoors and handholding. You might also want to experiment with manual focus and focus peaking. You then simply move the camera back and forward till the part of your subject that you’re interested in is in focus. It’s a lot easier to get the eyes of small creatures sharp using this method than it is with auto focus. Happy shooting! Tim
I would like to consider this lens not only for macro, but also for portrait. Do you think in this case it is make sense? Would it be ok for portrait?
I don’t shoot many portraits myself but there’s no reason why you couldn’t use it for portrait work. But it’s going to be similar to the Sony 90mm Macro in that it’s a very sharp lens and you’ll either want your models to have perfect skin or you’ll probably need to do a little more post work as it will show every little detail.

Hi David. It does hunt more than the Sony 90mm macro and it's also noisier too. Personally I shoot most of my macro shots with manual focus and focus peaking, so the af isn't a big concern. All the best, Tim
| Very, very helpful video. Excellent sample photos, too. I have an a6000, which is an APS-C camera, and can I achieve the same results if I use this lens?
Glad they help Laurence! :) Most of the sample photos were shot on full-frame cameras but there is one from the a6500. You'll get a similar image quality on the a6000 but with the APS-C sensor it will be a tighter crop (effectively 135mm full-frame equivalent). If the weather permits I want to shoot some more images with it next week on my a6400 and add them to my review linked in the description field. All the best, Tim

from price perspective its almost identical to the sony 50mm macro. I am using an a6000 and thinking about buying the sony or the sigma. With crop factor i will get 75mm or 105. For shooting insects, the sigma makes more sense but the Sony is nicely compact. Does anybody know further additional reasons for sony or sigma? Probably image quality?
I've not used the Sony FE 50mm Macro so can't comment on this lens, although the Sigma 70mm does seem to fair better in the reviews than the 50mm Sony, with many mentioning the image quality. I have the Sony 90mm Macro as well and the Sigma comes very close in terms of image quality. All the best, Tim
@@AlphaShooters thanks!! Do you think handling 105mm (Sigma 70mm) is ok without image stabilization? Someone told me, it wouldn't make sense to go for Sony 90mm on a6000 due to difficulty of handling, so therefore Sony 50mm would be perfect. However, I am really interested in shooting insects, so 70mm Sigma is prefered, if 105mm without OSS isn't too hard to use.
@@05Bektas If you are shooting at 1/100sec and above then you will be fine without the image stabilization. Personally I find the Sony 90mm on a small body like the a6000 series is fine, sure it's a large lens but it's not all that heavy. All the best, Tim

@@jerindc007 Hi. The Sony 90mm would be my preferred choice over the Sigma. The af is definitely slower and noisier on the Sigma than the Sony, although for macro shots I often manually focus anyway so this isn't a big deal. The working distance is also more comfortable with the Sony. Both take excellent images though and the Sigma is a superb lens for the price. All the best, Tim
will the sigma 70mm macro art for sony work with 3rd party electronic macro extensions by companies like meike/neewer to gain more magnification? asking coz of the wired by focus thing. if anyone knows or have seen this lens work with extension tube please help me out with this info. TIA
I have some neewer extension tubes and I just tried them with the Sigma and it doesn't focus at all I'm afraid, even manual focus doesn't work properly.
